Emma Ruth Rundle: Fever Dreams in the Season of the Witch // KEXP
full article via KEXP
“I don’t think anything I’m doing is witchy at all,” says Emma Ruth Rundle.
I’ve just put forward a journalistic hypothesis linking her, Marissa Nadler, Zola Jesus, and Chelsea Wolfe as self-contained women making uncompromising art steeped in haunted melodrama. It’s an oversimplification, but Rundle is too kind to brush off my conjecture completely. “Marissa is a friend and Chelsea is, too. Zola Jesus, I’ve never met, but we’re playing a festival together in a few weeks.”
With tarot tapestries and books like Basic Witches for sale in Urban Outfitters everywhere, we’re witnessing a mainstreaming of the occult. Trend or not, Rundle doesn’t mind being connected to arcane female power. “It’s good company,” she allows. “It’s a unique moment, a little scene if you will. I’m happy to be associated with such lovely ladies.”
Good company is something Emma Ruth Rundle knows a lot about. Since 2008, she’s released records with the Nocturnes, Red Sparowes, and Marriages. It's her solo albums, however, where Rundle’s impassioned vocals and swirling guitars have coalesced into a sonic thumbprint. On Dark Horses (out now via Sargent House) is a career highlight — an album that marries a hazy, soft-focus mood to the artist’s most fully-realized songcraft to date.
Rundle is speaking to me via Skype from Berlin, tonight’s stop on an extensive European jaunt. She’s on the road with her husband Evan Patterson’s experimental Americana act Jaye Jayle, two members of which play in Rundle’s own live band. Her relationship with Patterson grew out of such travel. “We did a split release (2017’s The Time Between Us [Sargent House]) which was a foretelling of what was to come,” Rundle explains. “Touring that record, we fell in love and now we’re married.”
“A life spent in pieces,” she sings on album opener “Fever Dreams.” The title is a fitting metaphor for On Dark Horses’ shadowy sound. It also hints at a fractured personal history. “It’s pretty literal,” Rundle confirms. “My sister and I came from some abuse as children and a household that included drug problems, physical abuse, and mental health issues that have been genetically passed on.”
Flanged cymbals, hypnotic rhythms, plenty of reverb — descriptors like neo-psychedelia and shoegaze are easy to bat around when discussing the new record. Rundle agrees. “The album as a whole has a quality that definitely references shoegaze.” There’s also powerful ensemble playing and she’s quick to credit Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Young Widows) for helping to achieve both the sound and performances. “We tracked as a group,” Rundle says. “That contributed to the cohesiveness of the album and Kevin’s production added that sort of softness to it.”
Central to the record are those distinctive guitar lines and beguiling vocals, leading to the question of whether she writes more as a singer or instrumentalist. For Rundle, it’s a combination.
“The roles are pretty interwoven,” she says. “I start all my songs on acoustic. From there, vocal melodies present themselves. I write all the lyrics and transfer it over to electric where I work with the band.” Still, even after completing a record, the songs continue to evolve. “Live, I’m noticing that the music is a bit heavier than it is on the record.”
Indeed, the heavy music community has always embraced Rundle as part of what she jokingly refers to as the “trifecta of Chelsea Wolfe, Marissa Nadler, and I.” She’s appeared at Northwest Terrorfest and supported King Buzzo of the Melvins. Perhaps its the elemental nature of Rundle’s music speaks to fans of that genre. “There’s a simple line that comes from playing in Red Sparowes — a post-rock band — to Marriages where we opened for Deafheaven. While my music may not be metal, I listen to a lot of it and feel comfortable in that world.”
It’s not all Rundle listens to, but the dark stuff bubbles to the top. She describes PJ Harvey and Tori Amos as being “like gods” during her formative years. “I’m also into Chris Whitley, the singer/songwriter,” she says. “His whole story and everything about that person is inspiring and fascinating. I’m kind of obsessed with him.”
Horses are another recent obsession — even Rundle’s new paintings are equestrian-themed. And then there’s the album title itself. “I wrote 'Darkhorse' for my sister,” she says. “It’s about overcoming childhood stuff, surviving and thriving despite circumstances that may have led us down a different path.” The concept flowered from there. “It was a metaphor that became a mythological character which came to life and I fixated on.”
A sense of wonder about the natural world permeates the lyrics as well. “We outshine the sun, we out-rise the moon,” she and Evan sing on “Light Song.” At first blush, the track sounds like it’s about rebirth while alluding to the pair’s romantic connection.
“There are parts taken from traditional folk wedding songs — some of the baptismal stuff about getting in the water,” explains Rundle. “It’s this blissful love song that’s ended up referencing and representing our relationship.”
A longtime Los Angeles resident, Rundle now lives with Patterson in his hometown of Louisville, KY, where they recorded On Dark Horses. The new setting suits her. “Louisville is affordable and we have a great quality of life. I couldn’t tour this much or be this productive as a visual artist and musician in LA. I’d be working two jobs.”
Directed by Louisvillian Danielle Elise Bartley, the video for “Light Song” paints their existence in dreamy hues. Rundle reveals one personal detail. “We got to borrow Evan’s Dad’s classic car which I thought was pretty cute.”
youtube
The clip and its idealized Southern Gothic atmosphere bring me back to my original line of questioning. Seeking a fresh angle, I mention that this article is set to run October 31st and inquire about Rundle’s own spooky traditions.
“I love Halloween and that subtle change in the air, the thinning of the veil between worlds,” she admits. “While my music may not be witchy, I’m definitely down with the creepy stuff.”

5 Seconds of Summer unveiled a stunning live video of their song “Youngblood,” the title track off their forthcoming, third album.
The live video was dropped a few weeks after the band first premiered the song. As previously reported, the new sound is their next step of moving forward and progressing as musicians.
“We had to move forward and test our songwriting and progress. It was the greatest thing we could do—we were hungry for something new and exciting. It felt like starting the band again!” vocalist/guitarist Luke Hemmings says about the track. “I loved that new wave could be really melancholy, but also up," vocalist/drummer Ashton Irwin adds. "It had romanticism and anger, but also energy and colour. That’s exactly what we wanted for our new music.”
Watch the video for “Youngblood” below:

Importantly, both the Billboard interview and the statement on the website mention that despite this announcement, there are still plans to commemorate Warped’s 25th anniversary in 2019, so fans can take some comfort in knowing that there will most likely be at least one more year of Warped after 2018, though perhaps it may be more limited. If you’d like to purchase one of the superfan ticket bundles, click here to select your preferred date and package. As for the official statement released by Kevin Lyman on Warped’s website, here it is:
"I have been a very lucky person to have traveled across the country and sometimes around the world as one of the founders and producers of the Vans Warped Tour. Today, with many mixed feelings, I am here to announce that next year will be the final, full cross-country run of the Vans Warped Tour. I sit here reflecting on the tour’s incredible history, what the final run means for our community, and look forward to what’s to come as we commemorate the tour’s historic 25th anniversary in 2019.
In 1995, I had already worked many years in the music business, including spending four summers on the Lollapalooza tour, and I thought, ‘for one summer I would like go out and put on my own show’ mixing music and action sports. With the support of so many people, I have now spent the last 23 summers bringing that show to a city near you. We have brought that show to over 11 million people around the world and watched that same world change while doing so.
I have been proud to work with so many artists who have grown to be some of the largest stars in the world. Countless bands have played in hot parking lots and through summer storms for you at some point.
Bands like Quicksand, Sublime, L7, No Use for A Name and No Doubt jumped on in the very first year.
Touring many summers with my friends and peers like – Pennywise, Social Distortion, NOFX, Bad Religion, The Descendents, Less Than Jake, Dropkick Murphy’s, The Bouncing Souls, Rancid, Flogging Molly, Anti-Flag and The Offspring are just some of my fondest memories. More include, having Blink-182 travel on my bus in 1997 when the world opened up to them and made them the superstars they are today.
The Vans Warped Tour was the platform to witness the rise of pop punk with Sum 41, Simple Plan, MXPX, New Found Glory and Good Charlotte.
The birth of Emo – with bands like Thrice, Thursday, The Used, Taking Back Sunday, The Starting Line, Motion City Soundtrack and Jimmy Eat World.
Fast-forward to the summer in 2005 when TRL and Warped Tour helped launch the careers of Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and Avenged Sevenfold.
I witnessed Warped alumni like The Black Eyed Peas, Katy Perry, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, No Doubt and even Kid Rock play the Super Bowl. I’ve even had the pleasure of seeing Green Day play the Rose Bowl.
More recently, I’ve watched bands start out on a small stage and work their way up to the main stages by meeting as many fans as possible and continuing to hone their craft while on the tour. Bands like Paramore, A Day To Remember, Sleeping With Sirens, Pierce The Veil, Echosmith, Motionless in White, Black Veil Brides, Every Time I Die, Neck Deep, Beartooth and so many more.
What has always made me proud was when I read that Warped was the most diverse show of the summer where you could find Eminem and Ice-T on the same stages as Sevendust, Pennywise, and 7 Seconds.
I am so grateful to have worked with more than 1,700 bands over the last 23 summers. I wish I could thank every band that has played the tour.
The Vans Warped Tour has become the community I had always hoped for. We have worked with over 90 non-profits each summer shining a light on new and growing groups giving our community the resources they need to connect with people who can help them, but also encourages our community to help each other. To Write Love on Her Arms, Music Saves Lives, Feed The Children Now, Keep a Breast, Hope For The Day, Canvas Foundation, Living The Dream and A Voice for the Innocent have built their organizations from the Warped Tour parking lots across the country. This even inspired me to start my own foundation Unite the United.
The work we do each summer on “give back days” has become part of our DNA. My brain is etched with the image of the church ladies after Katrina serving beans and rice to The Casualties with their upright mohawks, finding a common ground where no one was judging anyone. Then finding out the only working business in the county seemed to be the moonshine still and the locals showing up with a crate to share with the crew later that evening.
The long hot days that ended around a BBQ with food, drink and more music are some of the best times. Enjoying the days off, taking people jet boating, house boating, river rafting and sometimes even skydiving. I witnessed lifelong friendships being made, sparks of romance that led to ‘Warped weddings,’ and unfortunately now, more notices of passings where a proper good bye was not able to be said.
I want to thank my supportive family who has been through the highs and lows, Darryl Eaton at CAA, Steve Van Doren and Vans, Kate, Julie, Allison and Steph. My hard ass working crew who puts that show up and down each day, the sponsors which without them this tour would not happen, the bands and their crews, the promoters who took a risk on us at the beginning and continue to be supportive.
It will be bittersweet each morning when I see the sun rise and then watch it set knowing that this will be the last time I get to witness it from that exact spot.
Though the tour and the world have changed since ’95, the same feeling of having the ‘best summer ever’ will live on through the bands, the production teams, and the fans that come through at every stop.
The enduring spirit of the Vans Warped Tour remains as bright as ever, continuing to inspire creativity and ambition in new and exciting ways as we prepare for a 25th anniversary celebration in 2019.
I truly look forward to seeing as many of you as possible during this final cross country run, and getting to thank you for your support on this wild adventure. Until then, take care and be safe. – Kevin Lyman (Founder of the Vans Warped Tour)”
If you would like to also read the full interview with Mr. Lyman on Billboard, you can find it here. What are your thoughts on these announcements and statements? Will you be attending Warped in 2018? We know we will.

These Photographers Capture the Haunting Beauty of Ghost Towns
There’s a reason that ghost towns are empty. Maybe a nearby precious resource, like oil or gold, was wholly depleted. Perhaps it was a natural disaster, or a manmade one. The highway was rerouted, or the river diverted. Maybe disease struck, or famine.
Whatever the cause, the resulting tableaus of decay and desolation have fascinated artists for centuries. Renaissance painters were captivated by Roman ruins, including the Forum and the Colosseum; artists in the 19th century were obsessed with the remains of ancient Egyptian civilizations unearthed by archeological expeditions. Below, we’ve gathered a more contemporary cohort interested in capturing abandoned urban spaces. From Africa to the American Midwest, here are four photographers resurrecting ghost towns.
Noel Kerns

“It’s almost all trespassing,” American photographer Noel Kerns has said of his shoots. “Seldom do I have permission. It’s easier to ask forgiveness if you need it. In general, most people don’t care, and most people don’t find out.” Kerns, who is based in Dallas, Texas, has been capturing the abandoned houses, churches, and schools of American ghost towns since 2007, when he learned the technique of “light painting,” a style of night photography that incorporates artificial lighting and long exposures to create images awash in color.
In Kern’s work, derelict and dilapidated buildings appear to glow from within, illuminating empty windows and doorways in shades of red or blue. They’re undeniably uncanny—but Kerns said he doesn’t often feel spooked during these trips, even while shooting alone in the dark. “It’s probably disappointing to most people, but in general, it doesn’t bother me as much as you would think,” he told Artsy. There have been a few notable exceptions, though: an old hotel in Detroit where he couldn’t shake the sense he was being followed; an empty church in Gary, Indiana, where he walked over something sticky that, upon closer inspection, appeared to be partially dried blood. “That was an extremely uneasy feeling,” he recalled.

French photographer Romain Veillon has been fascinated by abandoned spaces since childhood, when he spent his summers exploring an old truck factory owned by his grandmother. Now, his practice centers around capturing the beauty of these forgotten, deteriorating sites. “When I encounter such a place,” he explained, “my goal is that everybody can travel in the past with me and make up their own stories: Why was this place abandoned? What happened to the former owners? What used to happen in this room?”
The questions are particularly compelling in the case of Kolmanskop, a former diamond-mining town in Namibia where sands have partially reclaimed the buildings. Established in 1908, the town quickly became a hub of the region. Legend has it that the diamonds were so plentiful, one could simply stroll across the sand at night to find the precious stones sparkling in the moonlight.
But following World War I, a drop in the price of diamonds and the discovery of a larger deposit in the south pulled people away. By 1956, the town was abandoned. Today, small tour groups visit around noon each day, but Vellion said that for the most part, it is quiet and empty. During the week he spent shooting in Kolmanskop, he would arrive around 5 a.m. “to watch how the sun changed the colors of the rooms little by little,” he said. “The atmosphere was completely unreal, you feel like it is another planet; or maybe Earth, but centuries after the last man has disappeared.”

According to local legend, the town of Picher, Oklahoma, was created by accident. In 1914, the Picher Lead Company of Joplin, Missouri, sent workers to deliver equipment to a site in Oklahoma. Their truck got mired in the mud, however, and to relieve their boredom, the men drilled a hole. Surprisingly, they hit something—a thick vein of zinc and lead. The company set up shop, and the town of Picher sprung up around the new mines.
By the 1920s, the area was the country’s number-one producer of the two metals, the source of most metal used in ammunition in World War I and II. When the mines began to run dry in the 1960s, most companies packed up and left. In the end, however, that wasn’t what killed the town: The mining had resulted in extremely high levels of lead poisoning among residents, along with a spike in cancer rates, leading the Environmental Protection Agency to dub the town and its surrounding area the most contaminated place in America. The government began buying out residents’ homes in 2005, closing the town for good in 2009.
American photojournalist Seph Lawless has visited Picher several times over the years. The town is technically closed off, and for good reason—extensive mining underneath much of the town made the ground unstable and prone to collapse. “At one point, my foot actually fell through the ground as a huge sinkhole began opening up and I jumped to safety,” Lawless recalled. “There’s an eerie silence as I walked around the ghost town alone. I didn’t hear birds or see any signs of life—it was surreal.” The wind blew tiny bits of rock against his face. Known as chat, this fine gravel is a byproduct of zinc and lead mining, and huge mounds of it ring the town like a mountain range.
The photos reveal a desolate town, made up of a handful of dilapidated buildings that line a road of cracked asphalt. The clouds are threatening, hanging low and dark against the sky. But the interiors are equally apocalyptic: Brightly patterned clothes are hung up, left behind by a previous tenant—a reminder of the residents who were paid to move out of the town. In one abandoned front yard, a lone wicker chair remains.
Lawless hopes that his work will bring wider attention to the devastation. “I think people look at America, and we look at the skyscrapers and New York City, and we think America is great,” the photographer explained last March. “And we are a great country—I love my country to death, I really do. But hiding in the shadows [are] crumbling areas of my country that I want people to not forget about, too.”

From the mid-1990s through the late 2000s, the Irish economy experienced a growth period so ferocious, it was dubbed the “Celtic Tiger.” The housing market was particularly brisk: Homes were being built in unprecedented numbers, at a per-capita rate four times higher than that of the United States. Then, in 2007, things started to go south: The bubble burst, and properties built on cheap, rural land could no longer be sold; sometimes, the investors were so broke that they couldn’t complete the projects.
Thus, Ireland came to be littered with thousands of so-called “ghost estates”—by 2011, they numbered more than 3,000. Among them, 621 housing developments were, at most, only half finished or occupied. (Since then, the number has been dramatically reduced, according to a 2017 report.) Photographer and filmmaker Valérie Anex, who was born in Ireland and is now based in Berlin, first encountered the phenomenon during a visit to her grandmother’s home in 2010.
The following year, Anex spent three weeks driving across northwest Ireland to photograph the ghost estates. It wasn’t hard to find them, she said—she simply followed the billboards on the highway advertising houses for sale. She also checked online, where outraged citizens were using Google Maps to compile lists of these empty housing developments.
It wasn’t an enjoyable experience. “Sometimes I wondered, ‘Why am I doing this? It’s so creepy,’” she recalled. “Every time I left one of these estates, I had this feeling of relief, thinking I’m so happy I’m not living there, I don’t have to spend any more time here.”
Yet there were (and still are) people living among these ghost estates—homeowners who bought their property at the peak of the housing bubble and can now only sell for a fraction of the price. “They are basically kept captive in this sad environment,” Anex noted. Although she encountered many of these people during her shoot, she didn’t include them in her series because, as she reasoned, “the system is not made for people. [The ghost estates are] a symptom of the capitalist economy going wild, going on credit; there was no real demand for these houses. These houses were not made for anyone.”

The time may be right for you or your parents to move into a senior assisted living community but you are concerned about selling the house. We are all aware that the housing market has recovered from the poor market of a few years ago but finding the right buyer can often still be a challenge.
There are some things you can do to give yourself an edge over the competition. The most important thing is to set the right price as a house priced too high is just not going to sell in any market. Be sure to take condition of your home into account and sale prices of comparable houses in the area. Do not assume the price necessarily reflects the assessed value.
If your house has been on the market for a while, re-evaluate what is going on and discuss with your agent any feedback he is getting from prospective buyers. It may be some repairs and upgrades are advisable and could make a difference. Ron Phipps, a principal broker with Phipps Realty and Relocation Services in Warwick, R.I., say, “If the house looks 40 years old with 40-year-old paint, 40-year-old appliances and 40-year-old carpet, that's a hard sell”. Remember that an old house can just look old, or with a few well-placed updates, you can transform it into a classic.
Steps to staging your home to get ready to sell:
Clean everything inside and out. Do not forget windows and steam clean the carpets. Make sure to eliminate any pet or cigarette odors. Paint walls that are dirty and replace stained or worn out carpet (consider putting in wood or tile floors). Stick to neutral colors.
Fix anything that is broken or damaged. You could consider having a home inspection done as a buyer will probably do one anyway. It allows you to take care of repairs beforehand.
Get rid of clutter throughout the house and do not forget countertops. Removing as much as possible will help to give the impression of more room.
Take down anything that could be offensive and put away personal items and mementos. The idea is to let a prospective buyer picture living there.
Open blinds and windows to give more light and let fresh air in if the weather is cooperative. Set out a vase of cut flowers.
Sometimes seniors think it is better to modify their current home and postpone moving into a senior living community. Studies show that making even small modifications can negatively affect home equity down the road when someone wants to sell. People can feel disconnected to a house that looks like an “old person’s” home.
MorningStar at Arrowhead represents the best in senior living with a unique mission statement “to honor, to value, to invest.” We have built our foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true home for residents amid a beautiful, serene setting. New Homes for Sale in Wickenburg AZ
New Homes for Sale in Wickenburg AZ:
Buying new construction is a bit different from buying a previously-owned home. For one, because there is no previous homeowner, you don’t have to deal with a sellers emotional tie to the property, which usually influences the negotiating process. Making a visit is a good way to find out not only about the quality of the homes that are being built, but also about how the condo or homeowners association operates, whether parents like the schools and if you really can commute to work in a reasonable amount of time. You don’t want to search new homes for sale in Wickenburg and find the area a nightmare for you– whether that’s because your commute to work is too long, you don’t like the schools or theres not great Internet service out in your picturesque rural setting. When Is The Best Time To Shop New Homes for Sale in Wickenburg AZ? New Homes for Sale You’ve got your down payment ready to go, your credit report is sparkling, you have a real estate agent lined up and you’re about to hit “submit” on that mortgage preapproval application when you stop to wonder if now is the right time. The right time to buy a house is when you know your finances can handle the responsibility of owning a home, you feel personally ready to buy a new home, and when you are comfortable enough with the current market conditions to buy. Why Buying New Construction is Easier When you choose to buy a new home you can customize your appliances, flooring, paint colors and other design elements and build a home that defines your lifestyle. Many home builders allow buyers to participate in the process of designing their property, which helps create a living space specifically tailored to the home buyer’s taste. Buying a new home can be fun and exciting. New homes are built with new materials and appliances, so less maintenance usually is required than with resale homes. They often have more safety features and fewer health dangers because they conform to today’s building codes. When buying new construction, you almost never ever get to see your actual home or unit. You see a model or prototype that is similar in floor plan to the home or apartment or condo you are purchasing. Those model homes are always decorated and dressed to look stunning. The developers and designers employ all kinds of techniques to make the model home appear bigger than it actually is. Often times they have furnished and staged them with slightly smaller-scale furnishings to make the rooms look bigger. Are New Houses Better Than Old? New construction homes allow buyers to identify a home as being their own, rather than one that hundreds of renters or owners have been in and out of. That’s why nearly twice as many people prefer new homes to older ones. Although there are exceptions, older houses normally cost less than newly-built homes. The average cost of a new home in December 2018 was $377,000, according the Census Bureau, while the National Association of Realtors says the average price of an existing home was $293,800 at that time. Before youstart seriously searching for a new home—or put your current home on the market—make sure you have a solid understandingof the housing market in your area (and the area where youre planning to buy).Ask a top real estate agent to use their sophisticated tools to give you up-to-the-second information on home prices in your neck of the woods. More than a few builders, however, take your money, throw together a house that starts falling apart on day one, and then stop returning phone calls. The lesson is, don’t buy a house– buy its builder. Its best not to close escrow on a new home until the work is completed. You don’t want to leave the builder an opening to delay construction into the indefinite future. Working with a Realtor Before Searching New Homes for Sale in Wickenburg Real estate agents are very important partners when you’re buying or selling a home. Real estate agents can provide you with useful information on homes and neighborhoods that isn’t easily accessible to the public. Their knowledge of the home buying process, negotiating skills, and familiarity with the area you want to live in can be very valuable. And best of all, it doesn’t cost you anything to use a real estate agent– they’re compensated from the commission paid by the sale of the house. Purchasing new construction is usually more complicated and intimidating than buying a resale home. It is important with a new-home purchase that a buyer hire a real estate agent to represent them in this process. You need to make sure the real estate agent you deal with is well-versed in new construction homes. New homes for sale in Wickenburg are staffed by real estate agents who work directly for and represent the builder. A buyer needs a real estate agent who represents them.Every Wickenburg real estate agent is different, and it is very important that the Realtor you’re working with can help you the most in the new home buying process. The Wickenburg Realtor that you hire works for you. They must be looking out for your best interest. That means when the builder pushes back, cuts corners, etc., your agent must be using their clout to have them perform. 5 Unique Things to Do in Scottsdale
If you’re like most people looking for unique things to do in Scottsdale, you’ve probably already seen a dozen lists that feature things like the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, Taliesin West, Old Town and Western Spirit. And while those are all amazing places that you should definitely visit when you have time, they’re not really what you’re looking for.
Check out this list of five truly unique things to do in Scottsdale – you’ll be glad you did.
5 Unique Things to Do in Scottsdale
Scottsdale is a beautiful city, and it’s packed with great things to do for people of all ages. However, these are a handful of really unique things to do and see:
Take the Scottsdale Trolley Food Tour
Walk the Soleri Bridge and Plaza
Visit the Cattle Track Arts Compound
Walk through the swinging doors at the Rusty Spur Saloon
Attend Cowboy College
Here’s a closer look at each.
The Scottsdale Trolley Food Tour
The Scottsdale Trolley Food Tour is a great way to spend a Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday afternoon. You’ll stop at these six restaurants along the way:
Barrio Queen
Craft 64
Sugar & ‘Spro
Tap & Bowl
TeaTime Scottsdale
Classic Cakes & Confections
The food tours serve up to 16 guests, aged 11 and up. The dishes you’ll sample at each restaurant are pre-selected to show you the most popular items, and several are paired with that establishment’s signature cocktail.
Tours only run four days a week, starting at 2 p.m., which means you should book your tickets early. You can get more information here.
The Soleri Bridge and Plaza
A walkway and work of art, the Soleri Bridge and Plaza was designed by renowned artist Paolo Soleri. Anchored by two 64-foot pylons, this V-shaped bridge is situated in a true north axis – and that makes it possible to mark solar events by the sun’s shadow. Each solar noon produces a shadow (and interestingly, solar noon can vary by up to 40 minutes from 12:00 on your analog or digital clock). The attached plaza includes beautiful totemic panels that replicate the cast wall motif representing Cosanti and Arcosanti.
Cattle Track Arts Compound
The Cattle Track Arts Compound, located at 6105 North Cattletrack Road in Scottsdale, hosts several events throughout the month – but you don’t have to visit for a talk or presentation. Check out the compound’s special events and explore works by each artist here. This 13-acre artist colony currently houses a number of artists, and its rich and storied history is definitely worth learning; it’s been home to several printmakers, architects, artists, blacksmiths and musicians over the years.
Rusty Spur Saloon
Image courtesy of the Arizona Historical Society
The oldest saloon in Scottsdale – the Rusty Spur – has welcomed celebrities such as Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Jennifer Anniston and Vince Vaughn over the past 60 years. The building itself is a National Historic Landmark (it used to be the Farmer’s Bank of Scottsdale) and was the very first saloon in the city. And while there are certainly fewer cowboys in the saloon now than there were in the 1950s and 60s, the decor is really on-point. (Check out this old photo of the front of the saloon through the Arizona Historical Society’s website.)
Arizona Cowboy College
The Arizona Cowboy College – located at 30208 North 152nd Street in Scottsdale – is the perfect place to learn horsemanship skills and ranching techniques. This family-owned and operated business has been featured on the Today Show, CBS Sunday Morning, Good Morning America and several other big-name outlets because people from all over the world come here to learn all about living and working on a ranch.

The 20 Cities and Homes Favorited Most in 2018
From majestic mansions to charming cottages, these are the homes that earned the most hearts.
The new year is a time of joyous beginnings, and also insightful reflection. Looking back is how we're able to look ahead (earlier this week, Redfin made its own 2019 predictions) while remembering the year that was.
And so, we decided to take a walk down memory lane, to recall the home listings on Redfin.com and the Redfin app that users loved so much, they clicked the heart alongside it to 'favorite' and save for later. Reality check: you liked a ton! Hearts were clicked on everything from a seaside treehouse in Seattle, to a charming Austin cottage, and Modernist dream outside Boston.
We're counting down the top 20 cities where Redfin users favorited homes, highlighting our top pick in each of those destinations. These are the homes that caught your–and our–attention.
Click each city or metro area to see the top home, and let us know the spot that earned your number one heart.
20. Hilo, HI
Aloha! We'd run away to Hilo, Hawaii to hole up in this A-frame home with custom woodwork, beam ceilings, and loft-like layout. Climb the eggshell blue stairs to savor warm tropical breezes and see why 140 Redfin users would ditch the mainland.
19. Miramar, FL
With a waterfront location and refreshing pool, 143 people took time to favorite this home in gorgeous South Florida, and live where you vacation.
18. Philadelphia, PA
Outside Philly, this four bedroom colonial is warm and inviting, with its brick facade, updated kitchen and expansive deck. It hasn't been on the market long, but 155 and counting have put it on their wish lists.
