Why Sextortion Shame is a Silent Killer
Here is an article I wrote for university last year about the rising number of sexploitation (online sexual exploitation) cases and the coincident increase in young male suicide statistics.
2022 saw an unprecedented increase in reports of sextortion- a form of online blackmail using intimate images. Surprisingly, most victims were men aged eighteen to thirty-four, the demographic with the current highest suicide rate. Ahead of Suicide Prevention Awareness Day on 10th September, two survivors share their stories and discuss why Generation Digital is the easiest target on the…

Kingdom Of Lies - Unnerving Adventures In The World Of Cybercrime, by Kate Fazzini
Kingdom Of Lies, Unnerving Adventures In The World Of Cybercrime by Kate Fazzini This book is supposed to be an exposé on what exactly takes place on the keyboards of the world. As the globe is connected, even to remote corners, via the internet (scary how quickly that happened), the potential for crimes committed via that medium is huge. Credit card scams, blackmail, political revelations,…

In conversation vis-a-vis Woofer and Whimper during a training session
WOOFER: Whimper, if I may just paraphrase Shakespeare for a moment: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Whimper, than the criminal mind can think of."
WHIMPER, in response: Even if it were done virtually, or in cyberspace, like I've been hearing?
WOOFER, somewhat resignedly: You could say as much, Whimper.

i was at an author event recently and a mom came up to me and was like “you should make sure in your books that you have a page where it’s a whole house but cutaway and you can see into all the different rooms like a dollhouse and there’s different things going on in the different rooms. little girls love stuff like that” and i was like that is so true and i bet you also love it. i love it too. don’t worry
#LIKE YOURE SOOOOOOO RIGHT#not to admit to a crime online but there’s an abandoned house near me that has a missing wall like that#and i recently talked to an older lady who lives nearer to it and i was like. we all go look at it right and she was like OF COURSE#she was like but it’s not safe to break into it anymore :( and i was like i know :((

So lately I’ve been seeing a lot of posts asking people to stop trying to make Odysseus look nice in their works cuz he’s a “messed-up person in the mythology”. Your opinion is valid however I have but one thing to point out:
You want to know who started all this? Who started to “make Odysseus look nice” in the first place?
It’s Homer. It’s nobody else but Homer himself.
A non-Homeric Odysseus would try to murder people out of his own interests. He’d murder Palamedes without remorse (and we’d be cheering over this but it’s a murder after all), he’d attempt to murder Diomedes just to get the Palladium himself, he’d volunteer to kill Astyanax…meanwhile you wouldn’t find any mention of either Palamedes or Nauplius in Homer’s poems, neither did he mention anything abt the Palladium heist (and Diomedes necessity did not happen until Conon’s version), the death of Astyanax, the distribution of war prizes, etc. And all the details in the Odyssey seemed to deny the existence of Nauplius’s vengeance at all, so Odysseus would not take any of the blame.
A non-Homeric Odysseus would be depicted as “cruel, treacherous”, meanwhile in book 10 of the Iliad Odysseus was not mentioned to have killed anyone during the marauding, neither did he promise Dolan anything at all. The negative interpretations are denied by these details subtly put by Homer.
A non-Homeric Odysseus would be widely known as a “coward” for only shooting arrows from afar. But Homer gave him a spear and had him absolutely slaying in both the Iliad and the Odyssey. That part of Ajax’s speech was invalid already.
Most importantly—a non-Homeric Odysseus would be having kids everywhere else, and the loyalty to his own wife as seen in the Odyssey is no where to be found. Meanwhile his lineage was a single-son line made by Zeus in the Odyssey, and his love for Penelope was one of his main drives, especially seen in book 5 of the Odyssey. He loved his family as a loving parent—something you don’t get to see in most of the non-Homeric writings—for most of the time they followed a different tradition indeed, in which Odysseus wasn’t half as nice as in the Odyssey.
TL;DR: in case you haven’t noticed, the characterization of the Homeric Odysseus was quite different from a non-Homeric version of Odysseus. It’s not that Homer didn’t know of the existence of other versions—he knew them too well, which is why in his version of the story, you don’t get to see any mention of them.
#and now hot take: your opinion is invalid cuz there isn’t supposed to be such a term as “nice” when describing a person#he did not join the war willingly and the war crimes he did were out of necessity#no god has judged him on these “war crimes” so neither should you#not especially when you’re basing it on your modernized view of this matter while the ideology of heroes is so different in ancient times#there isn’t such a term as “nice” or “not nice” when it comes to an Ancient Greek hero#they’re complicated persons with feats on their shoulders and family of their own#tagamemnon#the iliad#the odyssey#homer’s iliad#homer’s odyssey#the epic cycle#homer#odysseus#epic the musical#tagging epic cuz I’ve seen such opinions directing at Epic!Odysseus—but how on earth was he a “nice” person#he did much horrible things in act 2 and isn’t that what you would like to see or did I smell double standards?#*shrugs* I do not direct this at anyone—just at some specific opinions I’ve read online#anyways there’ll always be arguments but let’s just agree on the fact that he’s a grey character and he did stay grey in these adaptations#so fricking tired of these negative commentaries which are not constructive at all#Lyculī sermōnēs

Small detour of what I usually post, but I absolutely wish (other) clown the best of luck during these confusing and almost hopeless times- nobody knows how to deal with such amount of attention in such short amount of time- a blessing and a curse to behold
#Seeing their posts absolutely shattered me#I may never be able to relate to how he’s going through rn but at least I can relate to the fear of living in absolute fear#the fear of unable to be yourself in your own home with creative and personal freedom#The fear of being terrified that the thing that gives you the most innocent happiness will be heavily demonized and threatened#The fear of getting caught doing something you love and being yourself with your found identity#The fear of destruction#I relate heavily to this and to feel you are going to be caught doing anything that isn’t a crime hurts#I wish him safety and love during these stressful days#He’s brought so much joy to my life that I must keep private irl too#Whatever he decides for the fandom I will fully support it#I will still continue posting of course unless he wishes otherwise#If he sees this (which I doubt) hey other clown lmao- you are loved and not alone#It may be scary but you are not alone- you will never be alone#There will always be people out there who love you and there will always be those who are not even worth giving time of day#The internet is both a blessing and a cruel cruel unforgiving place#I hope it doesn’t deter you from doing what you love and hold dear#I hope you have anyone you can be with online or in irl that can give you the comfort you need#You deserve peace and security#Do what you feel is best#Welcome home

No asks answered or reblogs replied today because I'm quite sick.
Have this little doodle from my sick-addled mind going: What if Desmond's mother practices the long time traditions of 'Vicks is the cure to everything'?
Desmond: It's cheaper than medicine.
Shaun: Because it doesn't work.
Desmond: *dramatic gasp with the weight of his mother's ancestors*
#but in all seriousness#i am drinking actual medicine and lots of water#this just came to me while i was talking to my childhood friend#who has committed the most heinous of crimes...#not having vicks in their home XD#he remembered it and immediately ordered online for like 10 cad XD#teecup draws#assassin's creed#desmond miles#altaïr ibn la'ahad#ezio auditore#ratonhnhaké:ton#connor kenway

"why don't we hate israelis as much as we hated russians when they invaded ukraine" - first of all, who is "we". It was (primarily) Eastern Europeans who carried the russophobia on their backs, I'm not letting you appropriate their contribution. And second of all, when were you stabbing russian immigrants abroad for the sin of being russian and vandalising their neighbourhoods with swasticas? Because all I remember is russian men harrassing & beating up ukrainian refugee women and children, and setting their houses on fire, while westerners were observing this with "omg brotherly nation forced into war by politicians. make peace not war #deep"
#ukraine#russia#war in ukraine#russian invasion of ukraine#russo ukrainian war#i swear to god the audacity of some people#you really show your chronically online ass when equating being blocked on instagram to real-life hate crimes

Did you know Pern also came in a puzzle book format?
Crossroads Adventure books were published between 1987 and 1988, and featured two books set on Pern – Dragonharper (1987) and Dragonfire (1988). (Not to be confused with Todd's books, Dragon's Fire and Dragon Harper!)
I've not read either in great detail, but Dragonharper is set during Robinton's first Harper posting (and was released 10 years ahead of The Masterharper of Pern's publication), while Dragonfire takes places after the events of The White Dragon (and published as McCaffrey was writing Dragonsdawn, as the introduction notes!).
Published by Tor, they're credited as 'A Tom Doherty Associates, Inc. Book', and were marketed as "...interactive novels compatible for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons™ level play" – which basically means they use DnD stat names/hit points and have you roll dice to make 'checks' in combination with a choose your own adventure structure. You roll 3d6 and compare the results to your hero's stats, and then move to the page number for your success or failure.
Both contain an introduction/preface by Anne, but only one (Dragonharper) contains an explanation of Pern, which I find interesting.
Dragonfire credits Doug Beekman for the cover art, which is incorrect! Instead, the artwork is by David Cherry, and features in his trading card series (neat!).
Dragonharper, however, does correctly credit Doug Beekman, which is a name you might recognise as a prominent artist for the Conan series!
Both books also feature interior illustrations credited to Todd Cameron Hamilton, the illustrator for The Dragon Lover's Guide to Pern! If you can find them, they're books worth picking up for those illustrations alone. Should I hit up a scanner and post those as well?
#pern resources#dragonriders of pern#pern#book covers#book resources#Jody Lynn Nye#A Crossroads Adventure#Dragonharper#Dragonfire#i will have to dismantle some copies to scan the artwork in though#but i can't find pictures online for love or money#so i may commit book crimes anyway#anne mccaffrey
