'Hate' incidents being probed by police include a child who said a classmate smelled like fish, a woman likening another to a Rottweiler and the 'homophobic name Leonard'

Police forces have been blasted for investigating 'hate crimes' that include calling someone a Rottweiler or being called a 'Leonard' over a row about a hedge.

NCHIs are meant to be recorded for incidents 'clearly motivated by intentional hostility' and where there is a genuine risk of significant escalation, government guidance says.

But the police have been accused of wasting 'valuable time' on investigating so-called hate crimes such as an 'aggressively-administered haircut' instead of 'real crime'.

One former Met detective said it the situation is 'ridiculous', adding: 'No wonder there is a crimewave in this country.' 

Cases of reported hate crime include a Lithuanian customer who was unhappy with their haircut claimed it was done deliberately because he spoke Russian and the barber was allegedly 'aggressive and rough' as a result.

In one case, a German woman was likened to a Rottweiler in a parking dispute.

In another police were told someone had been homophobic because they referred to someone as a 'Leonard' in a row over a hedge.

Officers have also recorded incidents against children, such as one who called a fellow primary school pupil a 'retard', and against two schoolgirls who said another student smelled 'like fish'.

In 2021, a man was investigated for racial hatred because he whistled the Bob the Builder tune at his neighbour.

Wiltshire police also investigated an incident where a person said others were mocking the length of their hair. 

According to The Sun, Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: 'This nonsense undermines confidence in policing.'

Around 13,000 NCHIs were recorded in the year to June, and may be diverting badly-needed resources from other crimes as the Met faces axing 2,000 officers.

Ex-detective Peter Bleksley told the newspaper: 'The guidelines suggest you should only intervene in cases like this where there is fear of escalation — who ever had a fear of escalation after a bad haircut?!'

The report was made online and later withdrawn, police said.

An NCHI can remain on file for six years and occasionally be disclosed to a prospective employer.

Reform MP Lee Anderson added: 'Our police have lost control of our streets, and now their bosses have lost control of their minds.'

It comes after a police force investigating a journalist for allegedly inciting racial hatred recorded 1,500 non-crime hate incidents in just two years while failing to answer non-emergency calls 'swiftly enough'.

According to The Times, a freedom of information response revealed that Essex Police logged 702 non-crime hate incidents between June 2023 and June 2024 and 834 in the 12 months before that.

But a separate police watchdog inspection also found that the force 'doesn't promptly resolve non-emergency calls', which could 'contribute to a loss of confidence in the service'.

One of the 'suspects' recorded on the force's hate incident database was a shopkeeper who refused a person entry to his shop because they had a guide dog with them.

Another complaint was logged when a civilian said they felt their bank was being difficult with them due to their 'skin colour and height'.

It comes as Essex Police faces criticism for investigating Telegraph columnist Allison Pearson over a tweet that was posted, and then quickly deleted, last year.

The force has been condemned for its actions by critics including former prime minister Boris Johnson who have questioned whether investigating hundreds of non-crime hate incidents is worthy of officers' time.

Ms Pearson said the police arrived at her door on Remembrance Sunday and told her they were investigating a 'non-crime hate incident'. 

However, Essex Police dispute this and said the officers were clear the alleged offence was inciting racial hatred. 

The Times also revealed last week that UK police forces had recorded more than 13,000 non-crime hate incidents in the past 12 months, including against schoolchildren, vicars and doctors.

Former officer Harry Miller claimed 'the system is broken' and stressed that non-crime hate incidents were 'only supposed to be recorded as a form of intelligence in order to prevent future crime'.

Another non-crime hate incident recorded between April and June this year in Essex saw a suspect allegedly mimicked a victim speaking Arabic.

In a separate incident, an unnamed suspect wrote a tweet on X 'which the victim has found deeply offensive and feels that it is a racist hate crime'.

However, officers say Pearson's tweet is being treated as an alleged criminal offence of inciting racial hatred, rather than a non-crime hate incident.

Responding to the statistics, an Essex Police spokesman said: 'Our work has seen crime fall in Essex, with 9,300 fewer recorded crimes in the last year and 20,000 fewer than five years ago.

'We also know we have the support of our community, with 77 per cent of people in Essex saying they think we do a good or excellent job.

'If someone reports an incident perceived to be motivated by hate or hostility, it will be recorded in accordance with the national standards and process as set out by the College of Policing.

'With every report of this kind made to us, we must consider future risks of significant harm set against freedom of speech and act upon — and record — incidents proportionately and appropriately.'

Newly collected data shows the recording of NCHIs is widespread - with critics questioning whether the investigation of non-crime hate incidents is an appropriate use of police resources, especially in cases regarding children.

Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary and former policing minister, said: 'These examples are obviously totally absurd.

'Pursuing these sorts of incidents is a total waste of police time - they should be concentrating on criminals. It risks having a chilling effect on free speech, one of the fundamental values of this country.'

Journalist Ms Pearson said she was still in her dressing gown when Essex Police officers showed up at her door on Remembrance Sunday.

A spokesman for Essex Police said this week: 'As a police force, we investigate matters which are reported to us without fear or favour, no matter who makes a report or to whom the incident concerns.'

At the time of Ms Pearson's alleged tweet last year, the journalist was regularly posting about Hamas's October 7 attacks on Israel, as well as pro-Palestine demonstrations happening in London.

On Tuesday night, Essex Police said officers had opened an investigation under section 17 of the Public Order Act 1986 relating to material allegedly 'likely or intended to cause racial hatred'.

Therein lies the problem. This is not the result of a statute or law implemented through the government. It's the concoction of an unaccountable, ideologically captured organisation that has already been told to stop the practice. This is what it looks like when your entire police force is woke.

Allison Pearson's case has subsequently been dropped but never should have been pursued in the first place.

Shoplifting goes unpursued, but social media posts bring the full force of the law.

Journaling time! Happy new year edition!

It's 2025 already! Happy new year! Kotoyoro!

Just a bit of blogging this time, not sure who it will interest but I am old and I miss journaling lol. Nintama related stuff of course, and things I'm excited to share in the future. Under the cut because there are a lot of pictures.

Between trips here and there, new year's celebrations, and a lot of napping under the kotatsu I haven't done a lot of translating...and I found I kind of miss it, it looks like I've gotten addicted to it haha.

...But even when I'm touching grass, cartoon ninja addiction never stops.

It's kinda hard to stop thinking about them when promo for the movie is everywhere!

We (the innocent friends I dragged there and I...) tried three different drinks at the Nintama collaboration menu at Dipper Dan ; the 6th years' matcha latte with boba, the 4th years' strawberry milk, and the 1st years' blue soda float. They were all decorated with cute toppings notably the very nintama like 3 colored dangos....All very cute and very sweet!

I got nice goodies I won't all go over, but most importantly I got this!

The soundtrack for the movie, which I already ripped of course lol and will probably share some tracks here! (idk if we'll dump it on Tasogaredokijou later?) It features familiar and new tunes, and some pretty heartbreaking humming... if you know, you know, ahem.

Speaking of, Tasogaredokijou has been pretty quiet this end of the year, everyone has been busy of course, but I hope to be able to get back into sharing stuff here soon. There are so many things I'm excited to work on, the episodes Amako Soubee wrote that aired recently obviously (I translated them all already! just need to be beta'd and subbed!!! Excited to share), content from the limited movie pamphlet, most notably the short story, annnnnnnnd, some more goodies I recently got my hands on...!!

Hawaiiʻs First National Holiday Next weekend Hawaiian Nationals will be celebrating the 181st anniversary of Lahoihoi Ea, “Sovereignty Restoration Day”. On February 11, 1843 a British naval officer Captain Lord George Paulet arrived in Honolulu to investigate a land dispute complaint filed by Richard Charlton, the British Consul to Hawaii. When negotiations with King Kamehameha III did not go his way, Paulet’s cavalier colonial response was to seize control of the Hawaiian Kingdom and place it under the British Crown. But unbeknownst to Paulet, three envoys from Hawaii — Timoteo Ha’alilio, William Richards and Sir George Simpson — were already in Europe negotiating with the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of France for formal recognition of the Hawaiian Kingdom as a sovereign nation. Upon learning of Paulet’s brazen action in Hawaii, they filed a protest with British authorities. On July 26, 1843 British Admiral Richard Thomas sailed into Honolulu harbor on his flagship HMS Dublin to put an end Captain Paulet’s illegal occupation. Reserving the right to protect British citizens, Adm. Thomas clearly affirmed Great Britain’s respect for the sovereignty of the Hawaiian Kingdom. On July 31, 1843 a ceremony lowering the British flag and raising the flag of Hawaii was held at a site now called Thomas Square in honor of the admiral and the occasion. The ceremony acknowledged Hawai‘i’s sovereign stature and restored King Kamehameha III as the rightful ruler. A phrase from the speech made that day by Kamehameha III at Kawaiah‘o Church, Ua mau ke eā o ka ‘āina i ka pono (The sovereignty of the land is preserved through righteousness), remains the official motto of the Hawaiian Kingdom to this day. Even the usurper State of Hawaii has adopted it as their state motto. Lā Ho‘iho‘i Ea For 50 years, from 1843 to 1893, Lā Ho‘iho‘i Ea, was celebrated as a week long national holiday marked by Hawaiian patriotism and all the best that our islands have to offer including music, crafts, games, food and community events. In 1893, Hawai‘i once again came under illegal occupation (this time by the United States) and Lā Ho‘iho‘i Ea, was banned in Hawai‘i, along with other national holidays such as Hawaii Independence Day, Lā Ku‘oko’a. Unlike the illegal occupation of 1843, the one that began in 1893 continues until today. However, Lā Ho‘iho‘i Ea experienced a rebirth in 1985 when Hawaiian national scholar, patriot and activist Dr. Kekuni Blaisdell resurrected this holiday to honor and celebrate our continued independence and sovereignty, despite the nearly century-long American occupation. This Hawaiian Kingdom holiday is now celebrated by a huge gathering at Thomas Square in Honolulu, and by numerous gatherings and activities throughout the islands. Degree Mills

The Department of Education defines a degree mill as a school that has fake accreditation and where the students do not have to do any work. That is certainly true.

However, insiders, that is me, and a lot of other folks who do the work in higher ed agree that a degree mill is a place where the fix is in from the moment the student walks on campus. They find it sick to know that regardless of performance, as long as the student has a pulse and is in good standing with one or twenty student loan services (this is the real key, students=$$$), that student will graduate with a legitimate degree even though the student will not have learned a fucking thing.

It is gross. I hate it. Blech.

I have a confession to make…

I accidentally got a job at a degree mill. I didn't mean to. I was looking to pick up some summer teaching. Teaching full-time doesn't pay all the bills and sometimes, we get sick of teaching the same few classes over and over, so, while we don't want to leave our full-time teaching posts, we pick up adjunct jobs at other schools.

So, I saw this ad for an adjunct job at a BIG school. This is one of those schools that is so big that it will survive the coming edpocalypse without so much as a blink. When the small, liberal arts schools fail, and shut down these mammoth, too-big-to-fail schools will roll on until there is just one monster Hydra University. It is an online job so I didn't have to commute. It pays better than what I would make doing overload work at my current job. Most importantly for me, the school is a non-profit and accredited, so I wasn't going to be doing garbage…or so I thought. I did my training and was impressed. I mean, they use an online learning management system designed by sadists. Still, it wasn't the end of the world. I've used it before. It isn't my full-time job. I could suffer for a few hours per day of this bullshit. No problem. I signed the contract. I read the text. I whistled a merry tune.

Then, I saw the course shell.

I have zero ability to change anything. I can't alter the due dates to meet my schedule. I can't close the discussions after they are graded. I can't even change the late policy. OK. So, I guess this is all about quality control. They need to be sure folks are doing it "right" so OK. I can give good, thoughtful feedback and do some teaching on the back end. Individualized learning is awesome anyway. Then, I saw the rubrics. They are already filled out with approved written feedback and they only have three levels. The student either gets all the points, most of the points, or NONE of the points. Really? Really? Who would EVER give a student a zero unless there was a missing assignment? No one who isn't a total fuckhead, that's who. I am not, for the record, a total fuckhead.

Thus, even when my students totally miss the point, like swing and miss, I have to mark that middle row on the grading rubric. That means, as long as the student turns in something, even if it is crappy and has a grammar error in every sentence, the student will earn a C. The school is accredited because every week the faculty clicks the pre-made rubric and thus the students get regular, substantive feedback. Also, as long as they submit something, the students will pass. The retention and graduation rates put me through the roof. Student satisfaction must be sky high because when asked if they like the place and if they feel the teacher was engaged, students will say yes. After all, how could they not?

I can't change the system. It is a massive school with lots of lawyers and I assume, one or twenty lobbyists as well. For now, I am taking detailed notes. I have videos and screenshots. I am building a file that I will send to the DOE and the regional accrediting body. They will likely not give a shit, but I give a shit and it is all I can do. I am not going to walk away from the students I currently have. I can't quit on them. That isn't fair. They can still learn some good stuff. I will fight the good fight within the virtual confines of my classroom. I will give different feedback. I will push them to do better. I will make audio comments or video comments and I meet with them and I try, and try, and try, to get them to learn. To be better. I will explain that while they are going to pass, that isn't the point. Grades are pointless if they don't learn anything.

I know there will be students who care. I know there is some great information they can take from my class. I can do the work. The extra work. I can be the shining light in the degree-milled darkness. I will work hard because I care.

Our Treaty with the Swiss Confederation

For the past week I have been in Switzerland, first in Zürich to speak at an event, then Bern, to visit the Swiss Federal Archives and now in Geneva to attend the 53rd Session of the UN Human Rights Council. The United Nations has several headquarters: the main one in New York with which most people are familiar; the much larger one in Geneva that houses the Human Rights mechanisms as well as the World Trade Organization, the World Health Organization, the World Intellectual Properties Organization, the International Labor Organization and numerous others. Then there are headquarters in Vienna and in Nairobi. I found out something interesting. This year, Switzerland is celebrating the 175th anniversary of its 1848 Constitution, which is the official start of the current, modern-day Swiss Confederation. That means the Hawaiian Kingdom became a constitutional government eight years before Switzerland did, and the Hawaiian Kingdom was officially recognized as a modern sovereign state by the Anglo-Franco Proclamation of 1843, five years before Switzerland. In talking about the Hawaiian Kingdom as a recognized sovereign state, we often refer to the treaties that our Kingdom had with the principal nations of the world, particularly those of Europe. The reason I went to the city of Bern, which is the seat of the Swiss government, was to view the documents pertaining to the Swiss-Hawaiian Kingdom Treaty of 1864. It’s one thing to cite that we have a treaty and to show an image of the treaty. It is quite another thing to see the thick file of original, hand-written documents pertaining to the drafting, correspondence, discussions and ratification of the treaty. The huge files of supporting materials leading up to the treaty from the Swiss side are all there. It is profoundly validating to know there are real documents from real people from a real country who made a real treaty with the real Hawaiian Kingdom. And that there are corresponding treaty-documents like these in the archives of other European capitals. Not only that, if one were to dig further, one would find trade records and diplomatic communications from the 137 Hawaiian Kingdom embassies and consulates from all over the world. But, what is not in the Swiss Confederation file on the Hawaiian Kingdom Treaty is a document of notification terminating the treaty. And it would be safe to say, no such terminating document exists in the possession of any of our other treaty partners’ archives. When we say the Hawaiian Kingdom Treaties were never terminated, abrogated, repealed, revoked, rescinded, retracted, annulled, abolished… it’s really true. The Hawaiian Kingdom actually exists in the indelible records of its treaties. And the one treaty upon which the United States stakes it claim to Hawaii… does not exist! The so-called, “Treaty of Annexation”. “Love of country is deep-seated in the breast of every Hawaiian, whatever his station.” — Queen Liliʻuokalani ---------- Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono. The sovereignty of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.
