I know it's a Boomer complaint but like. So many things are just becoming garbage now. Metaphorical and physical garbage.
The internet filling with bots and AI programs swallowing and regurgitating and training off of each other's nonsense until search engines can't accurately answer a simple question.
Lower quality meat and produce shipping to grocery stores, coupled with more foodborne illnesses.
The rise of 'bin stores' where shoppers sift through mounds of returned, unwanted, and broken items in hopes of a rare gem.
Gentrification of thrifting and shopping for secondhand items, where gently worn items become "vintage" and are sold for like-new prices, leaving thrift stores with worse quality clothing.
Similarly, fast fashion getting faster with online retailers like Shein and Temu.
Planned obsolescence continuing, of course. More expensive technology that has a shorter lifespan made with lower quality materials.
People not even considering answering a phone call from an unfamiliar number because there's a 95% chance it's a robocall or scam.
So much noise and so much junk. Many different issues, many of them with the same root cause. I don't have a solution here I just need to express how TIRED I AM OF GARBAGE.

Navigating New Jersey's Online Weed Dispensaries: A Comprehensive Guide
New Jersey has emerged as a pivotal player in the East Coast's cannabis industry, with a rapidly evolving legal framework and burgeoning online dispensary market. This comprehensive guide aims to navigate you through the complexities of New Jersey's cannabis landscape, from understanding the legal intricacies to selecting the best online dispensary for your needs. Whether you're a consumer or a business, this guide will provide you with the necessary insights to make informed decisions in the Garden State's flourishing cannabis scene.
Key Takeaways
New Jersey's CREAMM Act and subsequent legislation have established a robust legal framework for cannabis, prioritizing small and locally-owned businesses as well as equitable ownership.
When choosing an online dispensary, it's crucial to assess the quality and variety of products, user experience, and the platform's commitment to security and privacy.
Understanding the financial implications, including taxes and fees, and ensuring compliance with state and local laws are essential for both consumers and businesses in the cannabis market.
Staying informed about the latest developments in New Jersey's cannabis industry is key, with resources like news outlets, webinars, and expert insights being invaluable.
The future of cannabis in New Jersey is poised for growth, with potential expansion of consumption areas, evolving market trends, and anticipated legislative changes shaping the industry.
Understanding New Jersey's Cannabis Legal Framework
Tumblr media
The CREAMM Act and Licensing Classes
The Cannabis Regulatory, Enforcement Assistance, and Marketplace Modernization (CREAMM) Act is a cornerstone of New Jersey's cannabis industry, establishing a framework for legal cannabis operations. Under the CREAMM Act, six distinct classes of licenses are available for businesses looking to enter the adult-use market:
Class 1: Cultivator License
Class 2: Manufacturer License
Class 3: Wholesaler License
Class 4: Distributor License
Class 5: Retailer License
Class 6: Delivery License
Each class caters to a specific segment of the cannabis supply chain, from cultivation to sale. Prospective business owners must navigate a complex application process, which includes requirements such as being at least 21 years old and completing a training course approved by the NJ-CRC. This training covers essential topics like the history of cannabis and cultivation techniques.
The licensing process is designed to ensure that all operators are well-informed and compliant with state regulations, contributing to a responsible and sustainable cannabis market in New Jersey.
Key Regulations for Online Dispensaries
In New Jersey, online weed dispensaries operate under stringent regulations to ensure consumer safety and legal compliance. All transactions must be secure and verifiable, with dispensaries required to implement robust cybersecurity measures. This includes the creation of secure accounts for users, with strong passwords and, where possible, two-factor authentication.
Before making a purchase, customers should verify that the dispensary is licensed under the CREAMM Act.
It is essential to understand the limits on possession and consumption as per regional laws.
Dispensaries must adhere to strict age verification processes to prevent underage sales.
When selecting an online dispensary, consider not only the product offerings but also the platform's adherence to these key regulations. This ensures a safe and legal purchasing experience.
The legal landscape for cannabis in New Jersey is continually evolving, making it crucial for both consumers and businesses to stay informed about the latest regulatory changes. Compliance with these regulations is not just a legal obligation but also a marker of a dispensary's commitment to responsible service.
Impact of Recent Legislation on Consumers and Businesses
Recent legislative changes in New Jersey have had a significant impact on both consumers and businesses within the cannabis industry. The NJ-CRC's approval of rules for cannabis consumption areas marks a pivotal development, providing a structured operational framework for dispensaries. This move is expected to enhance the consumer experience by offering designated spaces for the use of cannabis products.
For businesses, the new legislation presents both opportunities and challenges. Compliance with the evolving regulatory landscape requires careful attention to detail and an understanding of the legal nuances. Here are some key considerations for businesses navigating these changes:
Adherence to new operational standards for consumption areas
Updating business models to accommodate new service offerings
Ensuring consumer privacy and data protection in online transactions
The landscape of New Jersey's cannabis industry is rapidly evolving, with recent legislation shaping the future of consumption, commerce, and community engagement in profound ways.
Selecting the Right Online Dispensary for You
Tumblr media
Assessing Product Quality and Variety
When venturing into New Jersey's online weed dispensaries, assessing product quality and variety is essential for a satisfactory experience. A reputable vendor will offer a wide range of products, from traditional options to modern extracts, each with detailed descriptions covering origin, production methods, and cannabinoid profiles.
Exploring the variety of products is key to finding what best suits your individual needs. Take note of the aroma, potency, and texture, as these factors can greatly influence your satisfaction.
Community feedback and reviews are invaluable for determining the reliability of a dispensary. Look for platforms with positive testimonials about product quality and delivery efficiency. Additionally, lab testing and quality assurance are non-negotiables; dispensaries should provide evidence of lab-tested products to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
Understanding the potency and effects of different cannabis strains will guide you to make informed choices. This knowledge, combined with the insights from user reviews, will help you select products that align with your desired experiences.
Navigating User Interfaces and Customer Service
When selecting an online weed dispensary in New Jersey, the ease of navigating their website and the quality of customer service can significantly impact your shopping experience. A user-friendly interface ensures a smooth transaction process, from browsing products to finalizing your purchase. Here are some key aspects to consider:
The clarity and organization of the website's layout.
Availability of search functions and product filters.
Responsiveness and accessibility on various devices.
Clear and concise product descriptions and images.
Customer service is equally important, as it reflects the dispensary's commitment to its customers. Consider the following:
The availability of support via multiple channels (phone, email, live chat).
The promptness and helpfulness of customer support responses.
The presence of a comprehensive FAQ section to quickly address common concerns.
Remember, a dispensary that values your time and provides a hassle-free online experience is likely to offer a higher level of service overall. This can be a deciding factor in choosing where to make your purchases. weed delivery nj near me
Security and Privacy Considerations
When engaging with online weed dispensaries in New Jersey, security and privacy are paramount. With the recent enactment of Senate Bill No. 332, consumers are granted additional protections concerning their personal data. It's crucial to understand the measures dispensaries take to protect your information and what you can do to enhance your own security.weed delivery nj
Creating a secure account is the first step in safeguarding your privacy. Always use strong, unique passwords and, if possible, enable two-factor authentication. This not only secures your personal details but also ensures that transactions remain confidential.
While dispensaries are responsible for implementing robust security protocols, remember that no Internet transmission is 100% secure. It is essential to be vigilant and proactive in protecting your login credentials.
Here are some best practices for maintaining security and privacy:
Verify the dispensary's compliance with state privacy laws.
Read and understand the dispensary's privacy policy.
Contact customer service immediately if you suspect your account has been compromised.
The Financial and Legal Aspects of Online Purchases
Tumblr media
Understanding Taxes and Fees
When purchasing cannabis from online dispensaries in New Jersey, it's crucial to understand the tax implications and additional fees that may apply. Retail cannabis and cannabis-infused products are subject to a 15% state retail marijuana sales tax. This is in addition to any local taxes that may be imposed by municipalities.
It's important for consumers to note that recreational cannabis is exempt from the general sales tax, which can influence the overall cost of purchases.
Below is a breakdown of potential taxes and fees you might encounter:
State Retail Marijuana Sales Tax: 15%
Local Municipality Taxes: Varies by location
Additional Fees: May include delivery charges or online transaction fees
Understanding these financial aspects can help you budget more effectively and avoid surprises at checkout.

Compliance with State and Local Laws
When engaging with online weed dispensaries in New Jersey, it is crucial to ensure compliance with both state and local laws. Navigating the regulatory landscape is essential for both consumers and businesses to avoid legal pitfalls. For instance, the New Jersey Administrative Code specifies conduct for cannabis consumption areas, highlighting the importance of adhering to detailed regulations such as those for registered patients in consumption areas.
Assistance with finding suitability applications and financial disclosure applications
Development of standard operating procedures
Obtaining required state and local tax permits
Regulatory reviews of licensing applications and supporting documents
Representation at state and local licensing hearings
These steps are vital for dispensaries to operate legally and for consumers to engage with them responsibly. Moreover, staying informed about changes in legislation, such as the recent Florida SB 264, can have broader implications for the cannabis industry.
Ensuring compliance is not just about following the law; it's about fostering a safe and responsible cannabis culture.
Protecting Your Consumer Rights
In the evolving landscape of New Jersey's online cannabis market, protecting your consumer rights is paramount. The state's regulatory bodies, including the Cannabis Regulatory Commission, provide resources and guidelines to ensure your rights are upheld. For instance, the [Cannabis Regulatory Commission Homepage](https://www.nj.gov/cannabis/) offers a wealth of information on various topics related to cannabis use and business in New Jersey.
When engaging with online dispensaries, it's crucial to be aware of the policies regarding consumer data protection. The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) sets a precedent for data privacy, which may influence local practices. Always review the privacy policies of dispensaries to understand how your data is collected, stored, and used.
It's essential to have a clear understanding of the dispute resolution process for any grievances that may arise. This includes knowing how to file a complaint and what to expect during the resolution process.
Furthermore, stay informed about the actions of enforcement agencies, such as monitoring for price gouging, especially during times of high demand. By keeping abreast of these aspects, you can make informed decisions and safeguard your interests as a consumer in New Jersey's online cannabis marketplace.

Grr why am I worried about him???
All my online friends are saying I need to reaffirm my boundaries and not let myself fall into bad habits. But damn there's this annoying dysphoria when I think about this whole process and I wish I could have the energy to turn it around and be mad.
But I'm not angry. I'm concerned because he's my friend and I want him to be ok.
I don't understand why I need to be angry and turn off that worry I have for someone who I will always consider my best friend.
My brain can't compute these emotions.
It's easier if I compartmentalize and make a list as follows:
1- I appreciate any friends I have who have taken me to hospital or helped me in a time of need deserve equal in return.
2- I understand that my friends all have mental health issues and such things I cannot do anything other than listen and give moral support for them to seek help.
3- I see now that it is not my responsibility to keep bugging my friends to seek help for themselves. They need to do that for themselves when they are ready.
I'm not sure what else to say.
I'll leave with the promise that I am working on myself. I'm learning to be me.
I'm learning to accept myself.
I am an amazing person.
I can sorta play the guitar, some harmonica from primary school, and I'm learning the violin. (I also want to learn to play bass guitar and eventually the harp).
I can speak German, some Dutch, and French, Gaelic from living in Scotland, a tiny bit of Welsh from when I lived in Wales, and I picked up a little bit of Japanese from anime. Also, I have basic knowledge of asl and bsl from classes, I was working on how to write in kanji/hiragana and in Arabic in the past.
I've studied many things over the past ten years. I'm a highly accomplished student despite my shortcomings and absences.
I really enjoy photography and painting.
I can design video games, phone apps, and flash animations. I can make jewelry from precious metals. I can make clothing from scratch, and I understand how the fashion industry operates, how much of what we wear in our every day life has been informed by history and culture.
I can also wire a plug, fix a leaky sink, and install internet in businesses and homes.
I am also experienced and trained in both the care of children and vulnerable adults.
I have first aid training and I am an eagerly experienced archery instructor. I love it!
And I've studied cyber security of course!
Also I know how Trump expects his drink served from my training in bartending and hospitality - our field trips were amazing - I wanted to be a bartender from that course but I prefer cooking.
I've also worked in kitchens in 3/4 parts of the UK. I just need to go to N. Ireland now.
I've had jobs like retail, call centres, but I enjoy cleaning because it's therapeutic!
And most importantly I am a writer! 💯🔥
I have self published the first trilogy of my 12 part book series set in Scotland. I've also self published the first book of my second trilogy. And it all started with a poetry book I also self published! 💪💜
I wrote mostly by myself at first but over time I have built up my supporters and I have a pretty awesome fanbase! ☺️❣️🥰
My profits are small but I love writing!
I love all my friends and family so much!
I love al my Nakama!

Questions & Answers
Here are some questions and there answers.
Why is Voodoo and Santeria are both such powerful systems in magic?
Religions traditions such as Vodou and Santeria (Lukumi or La Regla de Ocha) to be “systems of magic” They are religious traditions born from the cultural traditions of west and central Africa. They are religions with rules, ceremonies, hierarchies, spirit's, deities, and priests and lay people. Like paganism, Wicca, etc. These traditions are powerful because the people have faith and belief in its practitioners and that's the reason it “works” Same as a pastor, or Catholic priest, the faith people have in them when they commacate with their spirits or Saints; is the same faith people have when a practitioner commacate with the Lwa or Orisha, that they will respond and assist them.
Faith can motivate it can moves mountains it can heal. So have faith. Now however, In a magical sense, faith and the results from our devotion does fit well in “magic” so again faith can help your magic work.
Can i try to do a African Diasporic rituals myself?
In my opinion yes you can do certain rituals as a practitioner and become knowable and powerful doing so. But In order to do any "religious ceremonies" in a African Diasporic religion like Santeria, Vodou, 21 Divisions, Palo to name a few, you must have the licence to do so, "or" be under the guidance and or trained under a person who does have the spiritual license like a priest. Like my religion we are community based, and initiation is necessary to conduct actual existing rituals, ceremonies and deviation all must be trained. Like I'm a Minister I was trained to do funerals, baptisms, blessings and other ceremonies (Now there are initiation where you don't have to join there house it's a outside initiation) like becoming a minister you can do it online and do the same ceremonies and blessing but you need to have the faith and knowledge to be successful in preforming certain rituals, that's where your training comes in. So, I say yes to some rituals and no to certain ceremonies without guidance it can be dangerous. The reason is, even priests must have several people to help with most ceremonies and that can go for others practices like paganism, wiccans etc. The more people in your house or coven preforming a ceremonie the better.
Can white people practice African traditional religions?
Yes of course they can do anything they want to there's no rules about it., but I do have a problem with the fact that people with non African descent wants to practice African religions which is awesome, But some go on to monopolize (obtain exclusive possession) these practices, then claims them as their own with out knowing the whole history of it first. I don't care how many religions you practice or if you incorporate them but to find the essence and have it work for you one must know where the came from first, knowing there deties or spirit, and what they how to Summon then there correct offerings. You know the whole history before preforming the rituals or spells. Here's two examples, 1st. Is Hoodoo and the 2nd is Santeria. Some white people try to add the practices with Wicca and European New Age Religions. Which again is fine if it works for you. But then there some who open online and retail stores and profit from African religious traditions and and make themselves out as being experts. They pretend they know more about Hooodoo than Black, Creole and other minority people raised in these traditions and this becomes the problem. People and not just white people tend not to simply practice religions from black cultures but they have to change it around and call it traditional. This is also being done with Native American Shamanism and religions. If you want to learn and call it traditional do it the right way. In some practices there are family members that have their own spells or ways of making oils etc but the basics are the same and these can't be changed.
Remember spiritually is universal when a person goes to learn a practice like this is mostly because they don't have one of there own or can seem to connect to God in their father. But another thing understand that teaching white people isn't so that they can become black, or contact our ansestors is that we teach them how to contact their own ansestors and God through these systems.

Scary Season
I have long said that Amazon is one of the most powerful, and popular, search engines. It is my go-to whenever I need to do product research, regardless of whether I have imminent purchase intentions. I figure if Amazon doesn’t have it, then it probably doesn’t exist.
Turns out I was right, because Search Engine Journal ranks Amazon as the third most popular search engine (behind Google and YouTube). I wasn’t making this stuff up after all.
Now comes more proof in the pudding of online shopping: Consumers look to Amazon first when shopping for Halloween goods. Some 44% of shoppers start there. As you have probably now surmised, if someone finds something they like while perusing their selection, you are already in the store so…you may as well buy it.
Tumblr media
But wait, there’s more. Retailers have started pushing holiday sales earlier and earlier in recent years, and consumers responded favorably, with Halloween shopping (or pre-shopping) peaking in August. That’s long before these crisp mornings started.
If you also guessed that there is an inverse relationship between age or generational cohort, and proclivity to shop online, you would also be right. GenZers and Millennials are the most likely to shop Halloween online first before stepping foot in a BAM store. And that is IF they ever step foot in a BAM store.
This does not bode well for pop-up shops like Spirit Halloween. Every year these stores open for short-term gigs, typically in recently abandoned retail space. I can only imagine how many former Bed, Bath, and Beyond stores are now stocked with Halloween costumes. Oh, and here’s some trivia you can play at your upcoming Halloween party. Spirit Halloween is owned by Spencer’s Gifts, the mall staple with all the crazy merch. You’re welcome.
The broader takeaway is that Halloween shopping is only one piece of the retail pie, and if this is all part of an emerging norm—earlier and more online—it means the paradigm shift started in the mid-1990s is only getting more entrenched, especially among younger adults. It appears the train not only left the station, but you can’t even hear it anymore as it pounds down the tracks.
With holiday shopping now in full swing, from Target to Amazon and Walmart, there has been a lot of focus on the online arena. Sure, Target and Walmart still need to sell goods in their physical stores, but Target’s new immersive shopping experience makes it all too easy to just stay online to cinch the deal.
While I do not foresee BAM retailing being completely wiped out any time soon—including in what remains of my life—I do see it playing a gradually smaller role. The data bear this out: Older people are less likely to shop, including search, online. The youngest Baby Boomer is now 58, which means they probably have another 20-25 years for sure, maybe longer. That’s a shrinking pool of people, though. There are now 73 million of us, down from the 78 million born between 1946 and 1964. The decline will start picking up speed as time unfolds.
For those who grew up with e-commerce, or, like GenZers, who are digital natives, shopping online is a way of life. It is not an earth-shattering revolution in the way things are done. I truly feel sorry for those of my generation who did not keep up, and now need hand-holding practically every step of the way.
While I’m at it, might I suggest a Halloween costume for my non-evolving peers? How about going as a Digital Native? You might just find you like it. Find it online, of course.

If it’s okay to ask, how did you get into optometry? I’m trying to get out of retail and into a more professional work force and was wondering if you had anything’s that worked for you or that you wish you knew?
hey!!! heck yeah, retail sucks! here’s the thing though, optometry is kind of half medical clinic, half retail. im definitely more on the clinic side as im an assistant to the optometrist, but frame styling and selling lenses is a part of the job. that being said, i 100% recommend this industry if you’re looking for a halfway point between customer service and medical.
there’s typically three levels of work within an optometry clinic, you have the optometrist, the optician, and the optometric assistant. optometrist is obvious the doctor so it needs significant training, the optician typically requires a 1-2 year training/licensing course (though depending on where you live, if it’s unregulated you may be able to get an apprenticeship), and the optometric assistant is usually on the job training with no prior experience (there are COA courses though, requirements depend on the clinic).
im working currently half as an assistant, half as an optician (im usually doing diagnostic testing or charting for the doctor but sometimes i cut lenses into frames). i actually got this job straight from a prior retail position and all i did was look on indeed (job employment website). there’s usually tons of openings online, and if you search specifically for ‘optometric assistant’ you will most likely finding positions that don’t require prior experience.
the best way to tailor your resume would be to put the focus on receptionist skills, computer skills, and customer service, these are the three things i tend to rely on most aside from the medical aspects. i was very fortunate to work for a boss that was happy to pay for my schooling for as long as i worked for him, but OA would be the best option for you to start!

I wanted to share about this, because this specifically hit home for me.
I graduated with a bachelor's in English, specializing in professional writing (ad copy, documentation/design, editing, and draft writing--I was aiming to be widely employable doing something I loved) in first quarter 2019. Now, my university wasn't particularly prestigious, but I had a good record and prior employment at university (doing course editing and documentation) and certificates from professional training programs and recommendations from professors and past employers.
Between my date of graduation (and throughout my last semester) and mid-2023, I submitted an average of 10 job applications every weekday as though it were my job. I also worked on and off retail and contract work (slowly building up my professional CV). I worked on it on my own and I had connected with multiple placement and temp agencies too. Even during COVID, I kept it up. I applied local across the three states I lived in during this time, as well as remote, and hybrid, and even out of state if the salary for the position would have allowed me to move. I even applied to neighboring states with lower salary positions because a short move would still be doable.
For all my work I achieved less than 50 interviews total (probably closer to 20). All of which panned out how you'd expect. And not for a lack of trying. I tested my resume (by comparing success rates on test applications with individual modifications and used review services), my employment analytics, keyword frequency and position on my CV. I did the dirty work in between applications. It wasn't perfect, because different sorts of jobs I was aiming for wanted different things so I had to alter things frequently.
By the point in 2023 where I stopped I was having an extended depressive episode. I had received, on average, 2-5 rejection emails every day in that four year span. Sometimes I would get emails rejecting me from positions I had applied for months earlier, sometimes from positions I had not applied for at all. My partner took up full time employment, which is why I stopped. They had made a connection with someone who got them the job they have now. I, in turn, became a stay at home parent.
And in the year since, and with new reporting on the issue, I've come to realize what I went through was worse than I'd thought.
See, by the time I was entering that final depressive episode I had a strong suspicion that these online job listings were not what they seemed. I knew some people got jobs that way, I had seen it happen. But I could still tell something was wrong. Initially I had thought it was a matter of internal hiring versus hiring practices (the company had to list the positions publicly even though they knew they would be rearranging internally to fill the position), which did happen. But, in reality, what was happening was worse.
Reporting has confirmed that the vast majority of employers using sites like indeed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, monster, etc. aren't actually hiring. They're laundering their employment numbers to invent growth. If they have an application open, and then it closes because they say the position was "filled" they get to say that they are employing more people. This is good for them, because these sites can aggregate that data for them to put in various reports to show larger scale growth for investors. And when they aren't laundering numbers, they're farming data from various listings to sell back to the sites that host those same listings; but since those listings exist to harvest data and aren't real, the data they're selling is useless and makes the platforms worse.
I spent four years applying to jobs that weren't even real. Or that weren't what they said they were. Or for jobs that had already been filled. And a year after I've stopped, I sometimes still get rejections. That did something to me that I can't afford to get therapy for. It broke me in such a fundamental way that I can't discern the pieces of my professional self to put them back together. If someone offered me my dream job right now, for real, no strings attached, I'd tell them no--because there's no way in hell I'd trust them. Not after what I've experienced.
And what I went through isn't even a matter of employment vs unemployment. I worked essentially full time hours for four years, and every day (even days I wasn't working) 2-5 of my "employers" told me I had done a shit job; often so bad that they didn't even address the message to me, just sent a general statement. By all accounts I was employed. And by all accounts I never got fired, I quit. I quit because the workplace was too toxic to exist in.
So, if anyone wants to learn anything from me, learn this. Don't apply online. Ever. If you absolutely have to, do it and then immediately call the hiring manager for the position to let them know you have applied and would like to hear back as soon as it processes. If you need a job, talk to a person. If you don't, you may well never find a job.
do genuinely find it fascinating how indeed.com is like the biggest job-hunting website out there and yet manages to be profoundly useless in every possible way

Looking Into The Crystal Ball
There are more than three months on the calendar remaining until Christmas, and analysts are already making predictions about the most important aspect of the holiday: How much money we spend. Because—you know—any religious significance takes a back seat.
And the forecast, while in the positive direction at least, is not anything to write home about. Auditing and consulting firm Deloitte predicts that sales will increase by only 3.5% to 4.6%. While that may sound impressive, recall that the current rate of inflation is roughly 3.7%, and rising oil prices are bound to make it inch higher. That’s another way of saying that holiday retail, once accounting for inflation, will likely be flat compared to last year. And last year’s increase was 7.6%, at a time when inflation was running at about 8%. In other words, last year was flat as well.
And if sales are flat, it signals that consumers are not all that confident about their economic situation. In fact, “flat” means they are actually buying less overall compared to two years ago, yet spending roughly the same in inflated dollars. Gift recipients either received less in material items or gift card gifts, or—worst-case scenario—old Uncle Joe didn’t get anything.
There is one eyebrow-raising prediction, and this one is not bad in terms of the economy. It might cause BAM retailers to be a little more nervous, though, because the e-commerce component of holiday sales is predicted to jump between 10.3% and 12.8%, to the tune of total online sales somewhere between $278 billion and $284 billion. This one component is growing faster than the rate of inflation, meaning it is worth watching.

I did the math. Deloitte predicts that e-commerce will account for about 18% of all retail sales this coming holiday season. Nearly one in five dollars. Well, I might be bringing up that prediction, because I suspect that least 80% of my holiday spend will be online, but that’s because I hate crowds and love convenience.
Of course, it may be just a little bit early to be making any kind of predictions. We all know from watching The Weather Channel that forecasts are educated guesses based on models that, no matter how good they are, still come packed with error terms. Look at the “cone of uncertainty” for any hurricane prediction, and you will see that it fans out steadily the farther out you go, which is usually only a week at most. Now remember that this holiday forecast is for more than 90 days out.
While I respect professionals like Deloitte, and am certainly not one to besmirch anyone with training and experience, the “cone” for holiday sales predictions may be a little too narrow. Too many things could cause sales to plummet, or grow. For example, if oil were to top $100 a barrel, that would mean an average national gasoline price over $4 a gallon. That would then cause prices of anything else that is delivered to retailers and to our homes to jump as well.
Furthermore, since labor and talent strikes are the new black, consider how little (if any) gifts those people will be buying if they are still striking in three months. For example, while the current UAW strike is technically only going on at three factories, if union bosses put all 146,000 members on the picket line, those people will only be earning $500 a week from the UAW strike fund. That’s not enough to pay even the most basic of monthly bills, like mortgage, car payment, and food.
Retail always hopes for good weather, because sunshine and mild temps mean we are likely to venture out more times, and the more we venture out, the more we might spend. Snowstorms keep us home and/or shopping online. Even restaurateurs and movie theaters like all that good weather, because we are likely to couple shopping with dining and entertainment.
But don’t ask me or anyone just yet what our spending mood might be like in 90 days. My mood today may not be the same mood I have come winter. Just like the three-month weather forecast I just saw on The Weather Channel is very promising, calling for significantly warmer than normal temps across much of the nation, there is no guarantee we’ll be running around in flip-flops here in Amarillo come Thanksgiving. Maybe, but probably not, to be honest. I’ve seen some pretty bad snows here in November, so I know it can happen. It’s just too early, and too many current predictors need to stay constant.
Ah, but it is fun anyway to extend the regression line into the future. I am guilty as much as the Deloitte people are. I studied more statistics than most people. I also know that once you get out too far, those models are about as good as the palm reader down the street.
Meanwhile, start pondering your holiday gift-giving list, and if you see any bargains come up in the coming weeks, grab them. That’s the real beauty of looking ahead, because if you wait until December to shop, you might just find yourself backed into a corner with no extra money to spend. That’s my prediction, and I’m sticking to it.
