you mentioned recently that you really like your immersion blender. what’s it called? could you share the link? i’m interested in getting one myself, also for soups!

sure! i got this one from walmart for about $35 (USD) - it's the Kitchenaid KHB1231 2-speed hand blender, and it has worked quite well so far, although i haven't had it for terribly long so i can't make any claims yet about its longevity. but it does what i need it to do! i am wanting to make a smoothie with some frozen fruit today so i will report back how it handles that, but for soups so far it has been great. apparently the walmart version does not come with the little plastic "pan protector" clip-on, which may come with it if you buy it from a local cooking supply place or directly from Kitchenaid, but honestly i probably wouldn't be using that piece much anyway even if i did have it. the metal blade cover has been working just fine, and i have no plans to try blending inside a non-stick pan.

additional optional details because i typically give way more info than necessary: i went with the Kitchenaid rather than the slightly cheaper Hamilton Beach option that my local walmart also had because a few online reviews claimed the cheaper one tends to overheat, may impart a "plasticky" taste to food when that happens (which i know i am personally super sensitive to - i even had to stop using a really nice-looking pourover set i bought in the past that has a bunch of plastic seams in the metal filter because i could always smell and taste plastic in the coffee it made, so that was a deal-breaker for me) and doesn't last as long, which has been my experience with some other appliances i've owned from that brand as well. i'm not a huge fan of Hamilton Beach as far as quality goes, although their stuff does tend to be more affordable. the Hamilton Beach one is about $10 cheaper and comes with a whisk attachment as well, if that sways you. personally since I already own a hand mixer i knew i wouldn't really use the whisk part anyway, and it was worth it to me to pay a little more for something that is likely to last a bit longer. but ymmv!

Guardian Singles converged in Auckland in 2015, around a core of guitarist/vocalist Thom Burton and drummer (and ex-Vivian Girl) Fiona Campbell, building a reputation through live shows for raucous, melodic punk rock. Jennifer Kelly heard nods to the Clean, Mission of Burma, the Feelies and Wire on the band’s debut self-titled album released internationally on the Trouble In Mind Label in July. However, she concluded, “This is a band that sounds like the best parts of lots of other bands, but crucially, it also sounds like itself. Kia ora, my name is Thom, I play guitar and sing in the band Guardian Singles. Here’s a list of ten songs I've been moderately obsessed with recently — in no particular order. Not by any stretch “all-time favourites” thing... that would just be a bunch of Tik Toks of me crying and listening to Slint. Actress — “Leaves Against the Sky”

From the Karma and Desire album that came out last year. My favourite release of his for a few years, even though they’re all pretty amazing. My friend saw him play with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and said it was almost a religious experience.

Andy Stott — “Never the Right Time”

Andy Stott’s music is kind of out there on its own for me… the same way that I think that some people listen to classical music because it can make you feel like anything you’re doing is important? I’m not though, I’m just sitting here thinking about soup. It’s strangely familiar and alien at the same time (the music not the soup). But yeah, this record (and song) is gorgeous. I think Andy Stott could make the sound of someone doing handbrake drifts on a forklift in an aircraft-carrier hangar sound like a choir of angels.

박혜진 Park Hye Jin — “Y DON’T U (feat. Clams Casino & Take A Daytrip)”

In my mind I’m sexy dancing to this by myself in some “futuristic” club somewhere. By futuristic I mean that the wait staff wear rollerblades and there’s a mezzanine floor. Anyway, I asked my Kiwi/Korean friend if she would kindly translate the lyrics for me and she said (and I quote) “What is this? I HATE THIS. It doesn't even make sense.” And I’m like “that’s cool, I’ll just let you get back to listening to My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins, all good, sorry to bother you,” (lol sorry Maria).

From their fantastic album Hunger For a Way Out — I found out about them via Gonerfest last year, and I can't stop listening to this record. Really, it’s becoming a bit of a problem. The production is crispy and filthy, the songs are catchy AF. I wouldn’t be surprised if these guys blow up huge. Wish I could catch them live at this year’s Gonerfest. Go see them if you can.

P-Model — “Holland element”

A good friend of mine makes these great playlists called “The Tinny Mission” on Spotify (“tinny” is NZ slang for 20 bucks worth of weed, often covered in fly spray). The idea is that you borrow your Mum’s Honda Civic, drive around Hamilton (the greatest city in NZ) all night looking for somewhere or someone to score one off, but you never do. In the meantime, you’ve listened to hours of genre-less awesome tunes. This song was on the last mix he made. It sounds like it could have come out last week, but it didn’t. Just casually dropped 37 years ago.

Belong — “Perfect Life”

This from the album Common Era by a brilliant New Orleans band that I think broke up in 2011, around about the time this came out. There doesn’t seem to be too much info about them online. If you don’t get all the feels from this then you are dead on the inside (sorry I hate it when people say shit like that, but you are). There’s probably about as much chance of Kranky records reissuing this as there is of me starting an Onlyfans, but it doesn’t mean you can’t listen to this in the car at the beach on a stormy day and wonder where it all went wrong.

Yves Tumor — “Crushed Velvet”

When they’re not getting bit on the neck by crazed fans or levelling venues in Shanghai with extreme noise terror [no link for that one, my friend was there and just told me it was scary as…] Yves Tumor sometimes makes romantic motoric-tinged tunes like this one. This song is my favourite of what I’ve heard of the new-new stuff, but I still reckon Serpent Music is boss.

If I DID have a “shrine” or “wall of appreciation of photos of people I like” in my basement, I would probably be listening to this song while I added glitter and locks of hair to it. Netflix’s Clickbait Ending: Was Nick Guilty?

First up, fair play to any production that manages to deliver in the middle of this pandemic. Netflix thriller Clickbait started filming in Melbourne in December 2019, was forced to stop in March 2020, then came back eight months later and got the job done. That is no mean feat and praise is owed to all concerned. 

The precise nature of Clickbait’s job was to create a twist-filled thriller, which it absolutely did. The eight-part Netflix series is thick with twists, red herrings and ‘wait a goddam minute’ cliff-hangers that ensure you do as the title suggests and click ‘Next Episode’. In its frenzy to keep us all guessing until the end though, it took a few logic-missing leaps. For anybody still not clear on the ending, or for those who gave up halfway but still want to find out how things wrapped up, here’s what went down.

Who kidnapped Nick Brewer?

Easy one. That was Simon Burton and his stoner friend Daryl. Six months before they kidnapped Nick, Simon’s sister Sarah killed herself after she was rejected and goaded to do it by her online boyfriend ‘Jeremy’. Simon and Daryl then found messages between Sarah and Jeremy on her phone, read about him in her journal, and tracked down an online photograph of him under his real name: Nick Brewer. They thought Nick was the one taking advantage of Sarah, and he was responsible for her suicide. So they ambushed Nick on his cycle to work, drugged him and tied him up in the back of a van, then filmed him holding signs saying “I abuse women” and “At 5 million views I die”, and released the video anonymously online.

Why did Simon and Daryl need the video to get five million views before killing Nick?

No reason, other than they wanted to publicly expose Nick as an abusive cheat and destroy his reputation in grand style. Whether they would have just let him go if the views hadn’t rolled past the five million point, we don’t know. Daryl, who is not bright, did get excited about the video going viral and them getting “famous”, but whether he was expecting fame as a murderer, kidnapper or the anonymous maker of a video, is not clear.

Was Nick responsible for Sarah Burton’s suicide?

Not at all. Nick Brewer had never met Sarah Burton (whose online dating profile was under the name ‘Maggie Oxley’ for reasons undisclosed). ‘Maggie’ had never met ‘Jeremy’ in real life, and was being catfished by Dawn Gleed, the receptionist at Nick’s place of work. Dawn used Nick’s photographs and personal details gleaned from their friendship to pose as versions of him on multiple online dating sites, to fulfil her deep well of loneliness as a childless woman whose husband played with train sets. It was Dawn posing as Nick/Jeremy who irritably rejected Sarah because she was smitten with new cat fishing victim Emma, and told Sarah to make good on her suicide threat.

Why did Simon let Nick go?

Because he realised Nick was telling the truth about not being the one who’d messaged Sarah, and that the ‘evidence’ beach photo of Nick and Sarah together was clearly a Photoshop fake. (As Nick pointed out, the horizon wasn’t level.) Simon deliberately left Nick alone in the truck with access to a Stanley knife so he could cut through his restraints and escape. Simon pursued Nick with a gun, but let him go because Nick promised to find the person who had really typed that message to Sarah, to take them to the police and make them pay. Handily, the kidnap truck was parked within walking distance of Dawn Gleed’s house, so Nick went straight there having realised that Dawn was the only person who had access to his photographs and knew about his wife Sophie cheating on him. (Which Sarah Burton had written about in her journal.)

Who killed Nick?

Joe Gleed, Dawn’s husband, on the spur of the moment. Months earlier, Joe discovered that Dawn had been posing as Nick online to catfish women, and she promised him she’d stopped. Who ran Emma Beesly’s car off the road?

That was Joe Gleed again. When Emma went to Nick’s office to lay flowers at his memorial and smell his scarf, Dawn ushered her away and presumably found out which hotel she was staying at in town. Joe then called her hotel room with a threat, and when that didn’t work, ran her off the road. Joe and Dawn were trying to make sure that Emma didn’t reveal she had never met Nick Brewer, so that the catfishing link wouldn’t come up, leading a trail back to Dawn. 

Was Nick cheating on Sophie?

We assume not, and we never saw him cheat, but Nick did lie to Simon Burton in the back of that van when he told him that he didn’t have an online dating profile. Two years ago, before Dawn even got involved, Nick already had a dating profile on app D8R, on which he was registered under the name ‘Nick Chabot’ and pretending to be an architect from San Jose, rather than a physical therapist from Oakland. When Nick started work at the sports centre, Dawn synced Nick’s phone to his work computer and spotted a notification for a flirtatious message he’d received via the app from Mandy Harrison, who’d sent him bikini photos he complimented her on. So, Nick didn’t seem to be cheating/have cheated on Sophie, but he also wasn’t telling the whole truth either.

But Sophie had cheated on Nick?

Yes, that was all very straightforward. She’d had a brief affair with colleague Curtis Hamilton, who agreed to meet Nick in a bar and had a fight with him weeks before his kidnap, making Hamilton an early suspect in Nick’s murder. 

Was Nick having sex with his volleyball students?

No, not that we know of, but his colleague Matt Aldin was having a sexual relationship with volleyball student Tara Wilson. When she broke it off, Matt became unreasonable and coercive and posted nude photos of Tara online as revenge. When questioned by Pia, Matt denied releasing the photos. He may have simply been lying, or perhaps the photo leak was also done by Dawn Gleed. The nude photos of Tara were stored on Matt’s work computer, to which we know Dawn had access as she planted the Photoshopped pictures there of Nick with Emma and Sarah, to frame Matt as the catfish who’d posed as Nick online. 

Who was son Ethan talking to online?

A red herring named Alison. That was a good one. All the way through, we’d been led to be suspicious of Ethan and his online pal Al2005, but really, she was exactly who she says she was: an Oakland teen trapped inside her house due to anxiety and depression.

There’s an endless number of user-generated reading lists to explore, and Goodreads itself publishes dozens of “best of” lists across a number of categories. You can also join book discussions and reading groups with thousands of members.

You can participate in the community by adding your own rankings to books you’ve read and leaving reviews for other people to check out. Occasionally, there are even bonus events like question and answer session with authors.

2. LibraryThing librarything book review

LibraryThing is the self-proclaimed largest book club in the world. It has more than 2.3 million members and is part-cataloging site/part-social networking site.

With a free account, you can add up to 200 books to your library and share it with other users. But it’s in the other areas where LibraryThing can claim to be one of the best book review sites.

Naturally, there are ratings, user reviews, and tags. But be sure to click on the Zeitgeist tab at the top of the page. It contains masses of information, including the top books by rating, by the number of reviews, by authors, and loads more.

3. Book Riot bookriot book reviews homepage

Book Riot is a blog. It publishes listicles on dozens of different topics, many of which focus on the best books in a certain genre. To give you an idea, some recent articles include 16 Must-Read Space Books and 8 Horror Novels by Latino Authors.

Of course, there’s also plenty of non-reading list content. If you have a general affinity for literature, Book Riot is definitely worth adding to list of websites you browse every day.

4. Bookish bookish best books  Hamilton Philip Lindley

Bookish is a site that all members of book clubs should know about. It helps you prep for your next meeting with discussion guides, book quizzes, and book games. There are even food and drink suggestions and playlists suggestions.

But the site is about more than book club meetings. It also offers lots of editorial content. That comes in the form of author interviews, opinion essays, book recommendations, reading challenges, and giveaways.

Be sure to look at the Must-Read Books section of the site regularly. Every two weeks, a new Staff Reads article goes live.

5. Booklist booklist book review

Booklist is a print magazine which also offers an online portal. Trusted experts from the American Library Association write all the reviews.

You can see snippets of reviews for different books. However, to read the full reviews, you will need to subscribe. An annual plan costs $295 per year.

6. Fantasy Book Review fantasy book review ratings

Fantasy Book Review should be high on the list for anyone who is a fan of fantasy works.

The site publishes reviews for both children’s books and adults’ books. It has a book of the month section, a rating system of 0-10 for books it’s reviewed, and a continually updated list of must-read books for each year.

You can search through the old must-read archives, going right back to 1980.

7. LoveReading lovereading best book reviews

LoveReading is one of the most popular book review sites in the UK, but American audiences will find it to be equally useful.

As is so often the case, Reddit has a subreddit dedicated to book reviews and reading lists.

The subreddit has weekly scheduled threads about a particular topic or genre. Anyone can then chip in with their opinions about which books are recommendable.

Several new threads are published every day. Recent threads have included subjects such as Literature of the 1910s, Literature of Singapore, and Favorite Beach Reads.

Brazilians rally to clean beaches amid outrage at Bolsonaro’s oil spill inaction

On Monday evening, Sport Club Bahia – one of the biggest football teams in Brazil’s north-east – faced its rivals Ceará with black oil stains on their red, white and blue shirts. It was the latest sign of the growing outrage over a mystery oil spill that since early September has blighted a 2,200km stretch of some of the country’s most beautiful beaches – and the failure of President Jair Bolsonaro’s far-right government to handle the crisis.

Nobody knows where the oil is from or why it keeps washing up on Brazilian beaches. Yet while social media has been bombarded by videos of volunteers rolling up thick globs of oil in sand and putting them into plastic sacks, Bolsonaro sought to blame first Venezuela, then a “criminal action” to scupper a major oil tender. He has repeatedly attacked environmental protection agencies as a “fines industry” and has yet to visit affected areas.

“There is clear revulsion over the government’s inaction,” said Marcus Melo, a professor of political science at the Federal University of Pernambuco in the north-east. “The government has a certain myopia in understanding how serious this is.”

On Monday, Bolsonaro’s vice-president Hamilton Mourão announced that 5,000 more troops will be dispatched to help clean up the spill, but for many Brazilians the response was too little, too late.

In nearby Bahia, volunteers organised the group Coast Guardians to clean beaches. It has 19,000 followers on its Instagram and has raised $4,800 online for protective gloves, boots and masks.

“This is civil society getting organised. Our movement does not support any political party, we support nature,” said Miguel Sehbe Neto, 37, a company administrator from Salvador who runs one of its 20 beach teams. “What we want is an explanation and effective action.”

Bolsonaro said containment barriers would not have stopped the oil as it was below the surface and suggested the spill could be a “criminal act” to prejudice a multibillion-dollar, “blockbuster” auction of oil prospecting rights on 6 November.

On Thursday federal prosecutors in the north-east ordered the government to put a national contingency plan into effect and said it had been “inefficient and ineffective”. But a judge ruled the plan was already operating and said the government was doing enough.

José Álvaro Moisés, a senior professor of political science at the University of São Paulo, noted that in April Bolsonaro’s government closed two committees that were part of Brazil’s national contingency plan for oil spills.

Flint and/or Madi eventually locate Silver and find him alive and happy? dead and sad? half alive/half dead and thoroughly screwed up?

Silverflint/Silverflintmadi    Flint and the Maroons are defeated on the beach and Hornigold and the British make it through to the village (season 3, episode 10). Silver is captured whilst Madi retreats to the underground shelter to keep the villagers hidden. Hornigold proceeds to torture Silver to discover the location of the cache and to avenge Dufresne's death. Can Flint and the remnants of his forces mount a counterattack and save Silver? Can Madi sneak out of her hiding place and rescue him? Or is Silver doomed to die at the hands of a very angry, silver-haired grandpa?

Silverflint    Flint, Dooley and Joji are unable to rescue Silver at the wrecks (season 4. episode 3) and see him carted off to Nassau by the Redcoats. Rogers takes out all his frustrations on Silver during some rather brutal interrogations, and attempts to humiliate him and his cause by mocking the street for fearing/following a tiny, one-legged nobody. Somehow, Flint manages to rescue Silver before Rogers hangs him. Don't ask me how. I have no idea. But I have Great Faith in Flint.
