But for viewers who appreciate a fresh, bold take on history with a heavy dose of humor, My Lady Jane is a gem.
Although My Lady Jane was one of the best-reviewed new shows this year, it sadly failed to find a broad enough audience. The series received a 91% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, yet it never landed on Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming rankings for originals. Despite the initial online buzz, it didn’t translate into enough viewers, leading to the show’s quiet exit.
In my opinion, insufficient marketing and the overshadowing by other, more heavily promoted series prevented My Lady Jane from reaching the wider audience it deserved, ultimately contributing to its untimely cancellation. It’s a real shame, because this show had all the elements of a hit: humor, heart, and a unique blend of magic. From the clever reimagining of history to the standout performances, My Lady Jane was special in many ways. For those who did find it, My Lady Jane remains a gem—one that will be missed but fondly remembered.

Behold, the king of online cartoons
Ex-Hanna-Barbera whiz Fred Seibert blazing a trail with YouTube network
A couple of times over the years, then-USA Today’s entertainment and tech reporter (and photographer) Jefferson Graham was nice enough to feature me in an article about the cartoons I was producing. First time was in the late 90s with “Oh Yeah! Cartoons,” but in 2015, with streaming video finally reaching the mainstream press (Channel Frederator actually started in 2005) and Graham’s animator son joining our network, he revisited.

LOS ANGELES — Fred Seibert wants you to have his card.
And his phone number. He even won't mind if we print his [email protected] e-mail address right here in USA TODAY.
Seibert, 63 is the online toon king, with 400 million views monthly to his Channel Frederator network on YouTube, but he's never sure where his next hit will come from.
So he's always out there looking, at schools, industry gatherings, book signings. You name it.
Next weekend, he'll be at the Vidcon convention near Los Angeles, a gathering of folks who make their living off YouTube, which is where most folks see his online `toons.
"I have no ideas," he says. "But I recognize talent."
That's for sure. Seibert, then president of Hanna-Barbera's cartoon studios in the 1990s, is credited with discovering Seth MacFarlane, the creator of the Family Guy, fresh from college, when he hired him to work on Hanna-Barbera cartoons.
For Seibert's "What a Cartoon!" series for the Cartoon Network, Seibert hit ratings gold, signing up the creators who churned out hits like "The Powerpuff Girls," "Dexter's Laboratory" and "Johnny Bravo." Their series debuted as shorts for first for Seibert's series.
He still serves as executive producer of "The Fairly OddParents," a TV series he began producing in 1998 when it debuted on his "Oh Yeah, Cartoons," series. It's been running ever since on Nickelodeon.
Seibert's biggest audiences, however, have come from online, to the tune of some 1.9 billion views for 'toons like the Bee and PuppyCat and Bravest Warriors.
We had Seibert as a guest on our #TalkingTech podcast in June. At the time, he was averaging 300 million monthly viewers to the Channel Frederator network. Now he's already up to 400 million monthly viewers, and predicts he'll top 700 million by year's end, and 1 billion by 2016.
The reason for the massive growth is that unlike before, when animation was targeted just to young kids, either for Saturday morning TV, and kid-based cartoon TV channels, anyone of all ages can view `toons online.
Seibert's Cartoon Hangover, a Frederator section where he shows the best of his `toons, bills itself as the channel for "cartoons that are too weird, wild, and crazy for television."
“Bee and PuppyCat,” about a young woman with a hybrid dog-cat, is written by Natasha Allegri, a woman in her 20s, about a character in her 20s, and thus, obviously not targeted to the traditional animation crowd.
"No matter what your interest online — whether it be anime, or science fiction or comedy cartoons, there is a place for you," Seibert says. "TV has a tough time supporting the sub-genres. Online is all about sub-genre."
Channel Frederator is what's known as a multi-channel network. Cartoons run on YouTube, but his network promotes them, sells ads and distributes the proceeds to some 2,000 of his video makers.
Through Frederator, the channel makers learn about which color to make their thumbnails to find larger YouTube audiences (he recommends yellow) and which keywords to use in the descriptions ("funny" always works, he says.)
"We give them the tools to grow their performance," he says.
Dominic Panganiban, a 24-year-old animator from Toronto, joined the Frederator network in November, and has seen his subscriber base grow ten times since.
He had been working with Full Screen, another multi-channel network that works with YouTube creators to help them monetize their videos and attract larger audiences.
"Frederator was a better fit, because they cater more towards animation channels," Panganiban says. Because Frederator attracts folks who enjoy cartoons, "I have more potential here."
By being part of the Frederator network, Australian animator Sam Green says he's learned about how to better promote his cartoons, and gotten access to a database of free music and sound effects to use in his cartoons.
He too has seen a spike in traffic.
Being with Seibert "helped me move from my mother's garage to affording my own apartment in the big city," he says.
How did the traffic for both creators go up so dramatically?
Seibert promoted the cartoons to his audience. With 2,000 cartoon makers, that's a lot to choose from. He says he'll plug as many of them as "show an interest" to growing their audience. He looks for people who post new work regularly, stay in touch, and ask "what we can do to help them more."
And despite the massive online audience, Seibert isn't making money yet, and doesn't think he will for another three years.
"Our cartoons are 3-4 minutes long, and the average American watches 6 hours of TV a day," he says. "We have a long way to go to even that out."

Away
A few days ago we took a flight from LA to Hawaii where we will be spending our holidays. And let me tell you, no one on that 6 hour flight was streaming their show, even though it’s the perfect opportunity to do so and it was the first weekend of its release.
A few thoughts to touch on some asks -
This staggered release is also unusual for Netflix, and likely something their team pushed for. You’re starting to see the drawbacks of it now, along with not having real marketing leading up to it. There is very limited coverage outside of entertainment outlets like People, and the comments are beyond negative, even on the NYT. The few pop culture pieces giving them space the first time around are all silent now. I’m talking the meme accounts and reactions that reflect public interest and commentary -like the Shade Room (esp for the black gossip community on IG). Given how much Tyler Perry features in the latest series it is quite remarkable that they have not commented on the doc AT ALL.
As with the above, emphasizing how jaw droppingly negative the reactions to press are. Not only on IG, but the comment sections of the NYT (which, if you’ve been reading me for a while, I’ve noted have been trending neutral-negative since the Bench.)
Netflix algorithms require a longer discussion. I’d say don’t believe anything you read online about how watching for X minutes is bad for them or that rating them poorly is enough. Their algorithms are a closely guarded secret and subject to change at any time anyway - that’s the point of machine learning. If you want to hit them where it hurts, the sure fire thing to do is to unsubscribe. When they sign big deals like this the goal is user growth - new subscribers, while limiting churn (retention). It’s probably safe to watch it if you’re a long time subscriber who is going to keep it around, but you might play into their annoying bragging about viewership and there’s a small chance they get a bonus off of views if they negotiated something like this. With that in mind, do you think anyone actually signed up for Netflix to watch this thing? Often times you hear people say things like, “crap, I cancelled Netflix but stranger things is back - going to reactivate this month.” My husband for example refused to let me cancel this month bc he wants to see the new Knives Out. This is what they’re looking for. This is what the contracts are dependent on (and not being a pain in the ass.) I’m not sure they’ll get that, given how settled opinions are about them even prior to the show. And not to sound like a bitch, but her sugars who would support the doc seem a bit broke and like they still live at home anyway, whether they’re 13 or 45.

Review:
“Oshi no Ko” is a 2023 anime series directed by Kazuya Ichikawa and produced by MAPPA. It is based on the manga written by Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari. The anime follows the story of Aqua, a young actor reincarnated as Ai’s son after his death. Aqua discovers that his father is responsible for his and Ai’s demise and plans to locate him and make him pay for what he did to them (Arroyo, 2023).
Regarding media representation, “Oshi no Ko” has been praised for portraying Japan’s entertainment industry. The series provides an inside look into the lives of multiple people in these fields in a sincere and complex manner. From the harsh criticism folks receive online to the potentially deadly situations most celebrities face daily, “Oshi no Ko’s” story bridged the gap between ordinary humans and stars. In short, “Oshi no Ko” is known as a brilliant idol anime with a dark and informative edge.
The series features compelling humour and heartfelt interactions, allowing audiences like me to take in the show’s constructive criticism and plot-heavy moments. Besides its critiques of the entertainment industry, “Oshi no Ko” tackles various themes, from friendship and family to revenge and personal growth. These factors, along with the show’s handling of darker topics like suicide awareness and stalking, helped it feel more intricate than most idol series that air nowadays.

Spoiler alert: If you have yet to view the anime, please navigate away from this post, as the following paragraphs will reveal the relationship dynamics between some characters.
As mentioned, the story has its many highs; it also has its minuscule lows. For instance, some viewers like me may find the romantic angle surrounding Ruby and Aqua’s characters somewhat uncomfortable. I understand that this anime is somewhat of an isekai, which means characters will somehow transported into another world. Still, in this case, the protagonists reincarnated in the same world as Ai's children. Despite both Aqua and Ruby being different people in their past lives, it gives me 'Sweet Home Alabama' vibes when they keep on remembering the promise they made to one another in the past.
Speaking of their past lives, Aqua was a doctor, an adult aged 24 to 26, while Ruby was his 12-year-old patient. Although I understand the anime has the intention to show a child's innocence and naiveness when Ruby, or should I say, Sarina (Ruby's name in her past life), asked Dr. Gorou (Aqua's name in his past life) to marry her as a motivation to combat her anaplastic astrocytoma, a deadly illness. And guess what? He agrees with the condition that she is fully recovered and turned 16. It gives me a bit of pedophile vibes.
However, despite the possible incest and grooming controversy arising from this anime, the plot still got me hooked. It made me curious about Aqua and Ruby's reaction when they discover each other's past lives. It also allowed me to keep guessing who would be their biological father, who is also Ai's murderer, and whether Aqua will take his revenge after uncovering the truth. As you can see, there are many unanswered questions, and I am excited to see what Ichikawa will do in "Oshi no Ko" season 2.
Overall, I believe “Oshi no Ko” season 1 is an entertaining anime series offering everyone a new angle of the entertainment industry and reminding them that it is not always as glamorous as it seems on the outside. Whether you’re a fan of drama or psychological thrillers, there’s something in this series for you.

Books Read in 2023: Heartbreak Boys by Simon James Green

I never expected at my age to enjoy a YA contemporary romance book, but this was so much fun and I laughed out loud several times.
The premise of the book alone showed me that this had the potential to be the kind of mess I would be into and it was. The story follows two 16 year old boys, Jack and Nate, and the book is told in first person with a dual perspective. Both of them are dumped by their cheating ex-boyfriends at prom, but since Jack’s ex is so popular everyone seems to be on his side. Jack wants to be a social media influencer and he gets angry when his ex, that claimed to not like instagram, creates a joint account with the current boyfriend and wins a lot of support and followers. When Nate’s parents invite him to go on a trip with them, Jack sees an opportunity to compete with his ex by making a joint account with Nate and pretending both of them are having an amazing time. Nate just wants to be left alone to cry but that isn’t written in the stars when his old best friend Jack is around. The scheduled trip on the van is full of terrible sights, but they try to make the best out of it.
This book made it clear to me that I like romance about opposites attract since it’s the 3rd one of that type that I really enjoy. Jack is loud and wants to be popular in spite of being wildly disliked at school. Nate is very introverted and just wants everyone to not notice him. Jack was the first boy to come out as gay at school and he always wears something pride related. Nate decided to come out at prom with a big announcement and instantly regreted it. Their dynamic is great and it was really sweet to see them becoming friends again.
On the trip, Nate’s father is trying to decide what to do with his life now that he is unemployed and Jack meets a popular instagram influencer that he admires and makes him see that maybe he doesn’t want to be popular after all. The book has that kind of morals we all heard before about how fake everything posted online is, but I still appreciated that it was there and that there was character growth.
As usual, this book contains unrealistic moments and some scenes that look to didactic to me, but when I pick up these kind of books I just ask for a laugh and to be entertained so it was pretty successful at that. It wrapped up the conflict with Nate’s parents way too quickly though.
Elliot, Jack’s cousin, was also a fun character with a sunshine kind of personality and I enjoyed the dynamic between the three boys on the trip.
Now, I will just add this scene here to show the ridiculous humour in this book that I am into:
“You know, that’s not completely what Jane said, but reading between the lines...”
“What lines? What’s he done?”
“Taken up the ukulele and joined an LGBT youth group.”
“OK, only one of those things is indicative of him definitely being gay, Mum - he might have gone to the youth group simply to support a friend.”
I am not sure if I will attempt more books by this author because I don’t like school settings anymore, but I might for the silly humour.
Edit: I forgot to mention this book is set in 2020 and yet there is no mention of COVID. I am sure it was written before that and there was no way to predict it, but bad luck with that timing since none of this would be happening in 2020...
