Teyvat's "Most Down Bad" Award Goes to Alhaitham for a Second Year Running
Seeing everyone making fun of Alhaitham for his "stalkerish" tendencies in this event is funny, because I feel like a lot of people missed that "Be literally everywhere Kaveh is" has been Alhaitham's MO from the day Kaveh appeared in the game.
From only grabbing his house keys after Kaveh returned from the desert (he couldn't have had both sets of keys at the end of the Archon Quest unless he went home and got Kaveh's copy) to ditching conversations to get back to his house only after Kaveh came home, to showing up without any warning or explanation in Kaveh's hangout with some ridiculous excuse about hearing his voice through noise-cancelling headphones... Refusing to offer any help in the Temple of Silence story quest other than staying in the library with Kaveh...
Since when does Alhaitham willingly cover anyone else's duties?
But this trend of "Be everywhere Kaveh is" didn't start when they were adults. It was already in place when they were still Akademiya students--and it's a trend that didn't end even when they had their fight.
Even when they weren't speaking, Alhaitham dogged Kaveh's every step through published responses to Kaveh's research articles in academic journals. He insisted on keeping a line of communication between himself and Kaveh open, even if the only way to do that was through very public ideological clashes. Pulling Kaveh's pigtails to get his attention lolol. It's implied that, for at least the few years between their fight and Kaveh moving in, this was the only communication between them--Alhaitham's refusal to allow their connection to entirely fade away. (And the fact that this is revealed in Kaveh's character stories--through his precious journal that records the moments of his life that had the most impact on him--shows just how deeply he values the fact that Alhaitham didn't give up.)
Another relevant side note: Alhaitham never asked Kaveh to give up his half of their house. Knowing half of it belonged to Kaveh, knowing that Kaveh may one day want to reclaim his part of it, knowing that it was listed as theirs, Alhaitham moved into the house and made zero effort to change its ownership. He was completely fine with living in "his and Kaveh's house." The stories suggest it was only months later (or even longer) that Kaveh even noticed he had the house, and he transferred away ownership of his portion without Alhaitham ever asking him (or even seemingly wanting him) to do so.
Please, let that sink in. Alhaitham actively left his grandmother's (presumably comfortable) house to move into "his and Kaveh's house," with no apparent explanation for why, and after doing so, he made no attempt to change that "his and Kaveh's" label. He moved into the house with no promise that Kaveh wouldn't show up on the doorstep the very next day and move in too. It almost feels like another deliberate provocation--I've moved into our house, are you going to come stop me? LBR, if Alhaitham had had his way, Kaveh would have been living there with him from Day 1...
There's also the fact that Kaveh literally can't write on a single message board anywhere in the entire nation of Sumeru without Alhaitham hunting his messages down and responding to them (which absolutely no one else does, by the way).
"NUH-UH!" "UH-HUH." "NUH-UH!"
Alhaitham's own character stories tell us explicitly that one of Alhaitham's defining character traits is "He is never where you need him to be," yet somehow...
Shot, and chaser:
Any time Kaveh is in the slightest bit of need or danger or just wants Alhaitham near, Alhaitham is "coincidentally" exactly where Kaveh needs him to be, whenever Kaveh needs him to be there.
Alhaitham didn't just "happen" to run into Kaveh in Port Ormos, an entirely different city from where he was supposed to be working. He didn't just "happen" to read the same terrible book as Kaveh when we know he otherwise would not waste a moment of his time on poorly-written literature...
He didn't just "happen" to appear when Kaveh was upset and needed a distraction in the House of Daena during Kaveh's hangout. He didn't just "happen" to be sitting around waiting when Kaveh needed answers after the Archon Quest. He didn't just "happen" to find Kaveh's academic publications and every single message board posting and respond to them at length and in public.
Which is exactly what Kaveh's mother told Kaveh he needed.
What level of down bad is "Abusing your powers as an Akademiya employee to keep tabs on your crush's library loans"? Just asking for a friend.
The only person for whom Alhaitham just "happens" to be available is Kaveh, over and over and over again--because he is very deliberately making himself a constant presence in Kaveh's life.
(Like, out of all things, I think people really underestimate the devs deliberately paralleling the romantic relationship between Kaveh's mother and father with Kaveh and Alhaitham's relationship. If you want to point to one thing that says "These two characters are intentionally queer-coded," it doesn't get any more obvious than this.)
Alhaitham, are you not embarrassed to be this transparent??? đ«Ł

I feel like the Robins probably watched horror movies to really up their game, taking notes on the gestures and body language that would creep you out. "Criminals are a superstitious lot", so yeah the guy in full body armour that could beat you up would suck, but a small child, somewhere in the dark, with an echoing laugh all around you as you fire off a hail of bullets, somehow dodging everything and gleefully messing you up. That's psychological warfare.

Prompt 203
Another Hydra prompt! Because I am enjoying the designs Iâve made lol. And perhaps itâs a bit inspired by @radiance1 âs different dragon prompts too.Â
So theyâve succeeded! Theyâve managed to combine their powers- with a bit of shapeshifting helped along by so many ghost allies- and become a giant duck-you dragon! Well, originally they were going to do something else, but they couldnât agree on an animal, so dragon it was!Â
And how mighty they are! Theyâre giant, absolutely massive- dwarfing the couple of skyscrapers still in Amity. Damages via ghost attacks and general sparring made it where people really didnât want to rebuild those types of buildings.Â
But anyway, dragon! Them! Theyâre absolutely stunning! And did they mention powerful? Because boy oh boy, are they powerful. The GIWâs guns do practically nothing against their combined might, and barriers shatter before them!Â
The uh, issue is that they erm⊠canât turn back. Which is fine, theyâve all sort of outlived most of their generation- thank you possessions and ecto-contamination, itâs just a tiny bit of an adjustment. But really itâs not too bad, and someone needs to stop the GIW from trying to poke their heads into Amity. Like itâs been a solid couple of generations, itâs time to stop, thanks.Â
Actually theyâve been a bit quiet. Meh, that surely isnât a problem. Probably. Honestly theyâre all going to use the opportunity to sprawl out where the school yard once was, their favorite place to sun their scales. Huh. Usually more people are around now that they think about it- or really, as Paulina points out, sharpening her fangs on one of the rocks.Â
âŠ
How long had they been sleeping, because it couldnât have been that long. One of them was always awake, they slept in shifts after all! Yet there are things missing now as they patrol the skies, both Wes and Tucker pointing out specific buildings that the others didnât particularly notice usually that now lay empty.Â
Hm.Â
Oh. That is a⊠strong barrier there. A really strong barrier actually. Pfft, they can take it! Theyâve shredded every barrier together before- Ow.Â
âŠ
Okay this might be a bit of a problem. Shit.Â
You want a general size reference? :P
#Dcxdp#Dpxdc#Prompts#The Class Pulls a Tiamat#The GIW have been working on a way to cage the Very Dangerous Ghost Dragon that just seemed to Appear one day according to their predecesso#Yes itâs been a good hundred years or so since the DP series happenings#Also yes theyâre poly & sharing a body#They can talk telepathically & share some abilities or dozen#âDanny this is definitely all from your luck I swearâ âIt could also be Wesâ yâknowâ âDonât drag me into thisâ#Big angry dragon king/queen (as Amity started calling them) throwing a fit at the barrier they canât get through#Which gets some peopleâs attention both inside said barrier and outside it#This includes a few heroes and people who Should NOT have learned about a Giant Hydra

i was listening to six hundred stike again (for the 9227582475827589 time) and the little
"oooohhh~ aaaahh~" (which i think is meant to be a throwback to aeolus's theme)
you hear at the beginning before the chants of
"600 men"
makes me wonder,,,, was aeolus trying to help odysseus, calling him to open the wind bag to beat poseidon?
....but the winions did tell him in dangerous
"it was meant to stop you by design"
so were they wanting him to open it and fail again??? almost like a siren's call to open the bag?
maybe... because as hermes said in dangerous
"we went through so much to get this"
as in aeolus didn't willingly hand it over this time? (hermes is the god thieves don't forget, he's stolen from gods before. he was only a baby when he stole apollo's cattle. how hard can a wind bag be?)
but either way what i don't think they expected was for
odysseus "i have the power of friendship & divine rage on my side" of ithaca
to then use said wind bag as a ye olde greek jetpack and (monsterously) curb stomp poseidon till he begs for mercy (and sounds so good doing it too) (sorry not sorry)
#listen this song just makes my brain tingle in all sorts of good ways#convinced jorge actually has magic when he writes songs because this one has me in a CHOKEHOLD#don't mind me im off to go listen to it again#and again#epic the musical#epic the vengeance saga#epic: the musical#epic: the vengeance saga#odysseus epic#poseidon epic#aeolus epic#hermes epic the musical#winions#six hundred strike#epic the musical spoilers#epic the vengeance saga spoilers

One of the oddest Silmarillion takes that Iâve seen recently is the idea that Beren and LĂșthien had it easy.
I mean, letâs take a look at Berenâs life. The Battle of Sudden Flame hits when heâs in his early twenties. He spends five years carrying on a guerilla war against the invasion of his homeland by orcs and other evil creatures; his mother and all his female relatives have to flee, and he has no knowledge of whether they are desd or alive, or captured. Thereâs a strange darkness speading over the forest and turning it into something out of a horror movie, a place most people wonât even dare to go into. The band of guerillas is slowly whittled down to about a dozen people, who are hunted constantly by Sauron and his wolves. Then, while he is away, his father, his uncles, and everyone else remaining are brutally killed, and he returns to find crows eating their corpses and orcs joking about looting the dead.
He carries on an guerilla alone, against Sauron, for another several years, in the haunted woods od Taur-nu-Fuin. When he absolutely canât last any longer, he crosses the most horrifying wasteland in all of Beleriand, where the only water present is poisoned and turns you mad, filled with evil spiders and who knows what other creatures. Heâs in his early thirties but heâs been through so mich that he looks like an old man. He has lost literally everyone he has ever known; he does not know if any friend or relative of his, anywhere, is still free or living.
Then he meets LĂșthien.
When he leaves Doriath on the quest of the Silmaril, which every sane person in Beleriand knows is laughably impossible, he goes to Finrod, the one person he can hope for any assustance from. Finrod has an entire realm; I donât think Beren is any expectation that Finrod will go with him personally. And what happens? The king of the largest remaining kingdom in Beleriand besides Doriath is overthrown by his own people at the instigation of Celegorm and Curufin and left with only a few loyal people around him. All of whom then die torturously in the dungeons of Sauron, followed by Finrodâs own death saving Beren.
On top of everything else heâs been through, on top of spending several months in despair being tortured in Sauronâs dungeons, the survivorâs guilt that Beren must be feeling is extreme. Even after LĂșthien rescues him, it takes him a while to recover. And he still hasnât made any progress on the quest itself!
Then theyâre attacked by Celegorm and Curufin â the people who bear a substantial amount of respinsibility for the death of Finrod and the Ten, the people who very deliberately abandoned them all to due and coerced all Nargothrond to do the same, and the people who kidnapped LĂșthien and attempted to force her into marriage â and they try to kidnap LĂșthien again, and to murder Beren.
The fact that Beren does not kill Curufin in that moment is a deed of extreme moral fortitude. The difference between Beren and LĂșthien compared with many of the FinwĂ«ans isnât that they donât face temptations, or that their choices are easy, itâs that they overcome those temptations.
So. Beren spares Curufinâs life at LĂșthienâs urging and Curufin immediately tries to murder LĂșthien; Beren jumps in front of the arrow, is severely wounded again, and for the third time since they met LĂșthien gets to work healing him. Virtually all of their time together has been spent with Beren recuperating from physical injury, psychological injury, or both.
And as soon as Beren recovers, he walks away from the one person who loves him whoâs still alive, and prepares to rob the gates of Hell, alone. Because Beleriand is dangerous, and as long as LĂșthien is with him and therefore unable to go anywhere safe, she will be in danger from both the servants of Morgoth and the sons of FĂ«anor. And even if thereâs a virtual 100% chance that him walking into Angband will lead to him being slowly tortured to death, thatâs a better option than the one person he has left getting killed or, worse, captured, because of him.
And then she goes with him anyway. And beyond all hope they actually succeed in getting a Silmaril - and then he immediately loses it, and his hand, to Carcharoth, and it was all for nothing.
And for the fourth time since LĂșthien met him, heâs near death and sheâs desperately fighting to heal him and kerp him alive, while sheâs exhausted to the point of collapse. And this is the moment when she gives up and goes back to Doriath, because that is what has the best chance of keeping Beren alive.
And then, at last, a ray of hope â Thingol looks at all theyâve been through and says, fine, you crazy kids can get married. And theyâve scarcely been married yet when they learn that oh, itâs not over, Carcharoth is rampaging through the land killing people and this needs to be dealt with. And Beren, even after everything, insists on going. (Because, hello, survivorâs guilt! he probably feels that this is his fault for, uh, getting his hand bitten off.)
(The fact that the Silmaril was, for a time, inside a wolf and outside Doriath, and Celegorm, noted hunter, never got near it, is, okay, rather amusing to me.)
And then Beren dies, saving Thingol, because he knows deeply what it feels like to lose his family and heâs not going to let that happen to LĂșthien. And she loses him instead.
Now letâs shift to LĂșthienâs point of view. Since her first meeting with Beren she has been betrayed by literally everyone she knows and everyone she meets except for Beren and Huan. She has been treated like a child, and a madwoman, and a trophy, and a pawn, and a sex object, and literally everything except an adult person whose choices have worth and meaning. She is not a superhero; she does not know what she is doing; she is terrified for practically every moment of it, for Berenâs sake even more than for her own, and for much of it she is hopeless. She does not know how or if she can achieve anything; she only knows that she has to try, because it is better than sitting in Doriath waiting to find out if Beren is dead. She puts substantial work and thought and effort into figuring out how to get out of Doriath (given in more detail in the poetic version) â and then, just when she thinks sheâs found help (note: Celegorm and Curufin do not give her their names when they first meet her; she doesnât know theyâre the sons of FĂ«anor), she is again taken captive, this time with the goal of forced marriage and the threat of rape hanging over her. And she still knows Beren is in desperate danger, and she still can do nothing about it.
When Huan aids her and she goes to Tol-in-Gaurhoth, it isnât because she feels she has the power to fight Sauron one-on-one! Itâs because sheâs desperate and canât think of any other options. And in fact, it is not she who defeats Sauron, it is Huan; once he is defeated by Huan, she has the intelligence and strength of will to force his surrender by threatening him with something he fears more than defeat, and to demand â not the freeing of Beren alone â but the destruction of Tol-in-Gaurhoth, freeing all its prisoners. The reason she defeats Sauron is not that sheâs a half-Maia badass who can wave her hands and do everything easily! The reason she defeats him is that she shows up there completely vulnerable and in effect uses herself as bait. That is an extraordinary degree of courage, not some kind of deus ex machina. And sheâs putting all the strength that she has on the line â sheâs pretty much passing out by the time she finds Beren. Similarly, all her healing of him is hard, exhausting work that sheâs doing despite being, the whole time, terrified that heâs about to die. None of this is easy.
Likewise in Angband â Huanâs advice and LĂșthienâs magic of disguise and sleep is invaluble in getting them through the door and past Carcharoth, but the reason she is able to enchant Morgoth and cast all Angband into sleep is not primarily because of extreme power, but because, like every other non-Beren person she meets, he doesnât take her seriously. Morgoth finds the idea of using Melianâs daughter as a brief entertainment amusing (and, if you read the poetic version, makes some truly creepy sexual threats against her), and thatâs how she is able to get him unguarded enough that sheâs well into her song and heâs already getting sleepy before it starts to occur to him that maybe this isnât going quite as he planned. LĂșthienâs victories are not because sheâs just on a different power level from the rest of Beleriand, theyâre because sheâs amazingly brave and willing to walk into the most dangerous places virtually defenceless. And she and Beren rely on each other utterly â after her sleep song sheâs practically passing out and can only get out of Angband because Beren is holding her up.
So this is who they are, at Berenâs death. A man who has lost everyone he loves and everyone who loves him, every friend or family, often helplessly witnessing their gruesome death â everyone except for LĂșthien. And an elf-woman who has been betrayed by everyone she loved or trusted, except for Beren.
When Beren dies, I wonder if heâs even relieved that itâs finally him dying instead of everyone around him. When he sees LĂșthien in the Halls of Mandos, I believe his first feeling would be not joy or love, but horror. That the last living person he loved, and the one he wanted above all to save, had now died because of him.
But LĂșthien isnât done. She goes to Mandos, and she sings, and her song says: look at what we have been through, look at what all Beleriand has been through, Eldar and Edain. We donât want realms or glory or power; we only want a few moments of peace with each other, and we fought so hard for it, and we didnât even get that. And when sheâs offered bliss and immortality for herself, she says No, I donât want it, not without Beren. She isnât promised happiness or long life â she only know that for the short time she will get, she will have the chance to be with Beren. And that is enough for her; for that, she gives up everything else.
This is a faerie-story; but it does not sound to me like a trite tale of easy victories handed to the heroes by Fate or by the author! They fought and struggled and sacrificed for those victories, amd they did it without ever letting go of courage, and mercy, and humility. There is a reason why this is the story that Frodo and Sam hearken back to for inspiration.
#tolkien#the silmarillion#beren and luthien#beren#luthien#look you canât dismiss this and then go: look at all maedhros has been through! he was captive he lost a hand#he had friends die in horrible ways because of decisions he made#all his family died#SO DID BEREN#he just didnât go evil because of it#so donât turn around and tell me he had an easy life!#maedhros had several hundred years in paradise#beren was fighting a hopeless war pretty much as soon as he hit adulthood!#the two people on their own are NOT the ones who have had things handed to them#the finweans had fortresses and armies and kingdoms and they DECIDED to walk into a war for vengeance and power#tolkienâs greatest heroes are always the ones who would rather live simply and peacefully#and who go through darkness and danger because they must

I'm almost certainly sure that every time Sophie describes "that" smile Howl has that Lettie and his other past girlfriends have fallen for, he's actually just... smiling. No anger or moodiness, just a warm Howl's smile and nothing more.
But the whole story is that no matter how much she grumbles about how he shouldn't use his smile on all these people and what a jerk he is, the truth is that no one actually fell for it. Except for her. And no one finds that crooked grin all that attractive. Except for her.
