By the end of the year we will have 2 fully functioning and equipped to deal with all our training modules. At the moment they are still going through some upgrades but should be ready in a few months. Next on the list is to get our left hand drive training vehicles into shape. This new module will be described and advertised on our web site (which has also been upgraded and looks great) within the next few weeks. For those of you who have it’s a great way to renew and refresh your bush diving skills. You must have already successfully gone through our Low Range and self recovery course to qualify to participate in this one day module. The Congo Highway self recovery area has also been upgraded but you can still get stuck!! We are going to include this section in our advanced bush (Low Range) driving course. Plans are afoot to work on the ascent and descent areas and the wadi crossing section. We had to do some major clearing work but again worth it as I think it’s now going to be usable whatever the weather conditions. For those of you who were a bit disappointed that it was unusable due to the amount of rain we had it is now open. We have already worked on the Sudan Pot Hole. Tatooine is horrible. Bold statement but its awful. Its hot, dry and full of aggressive and scary people. As a Jedi you are taught to be able to handle any situation but you, well you could do it. Barely. 

You had just finished your Padawan training and were sent on a mission with Obi Wan and Qui Gon. That was the only good part of this trip. Obi Wan was an entertaining Padawan and you got to spend time with Qui Gon. 

Qui Gon was a rule abiding Jedi who wouldn't dare break the rules of the Jedi code. Until he met you that is. You two managed to catch feelings for each other when he was teaching you a few years back and eventually you two formed a secret relationship. 

The last few days however, even being around your partner couldn't lift your mood. 

You sat in one of the spare rooms of the Skywalker hut where you, Qui Gon and Obi Wan were allowed to stay. Obi Wan was entertaining Anakin and Qui Gon was clearing his head outside leaving you alone in the room. 

You ripped off your robes and threw them to the floor not bothering to fold them and placed your lightsaber on a shelf next to your cot. All you cared about was getting cleaned off. 

You had been outside all day in the Tatooine sun. You were covered in sweat and sand without any relief. You were annoyed and stressed and it made it worse to know that you were annoyed and stressed. 

You tugged the final layer of your robe off and fumbled over the pile of clothes you had formed on the floor. You let out a loud grunt in annoyance followed by a string of curses. 

Undenounced to you Qui Gon was watching this all unfold. 

“Rough day darling?” You sat up and looked to see Qui Gon leaning against the door frame with a smirk on his face, clearly holding back a giggle at your reaction. 

You stood up and kicked the cloths to the side. He walked into the room closing the curtain behind him. “I will take that as a yes.”

He sat down on the cot as you walked away to get some water to freshen up with. “What’s wrong my darling?”

“Everything! I hate this god damn planet! Its hot, its dry, and its stressful!” 

You turned away slamming your hands down onto a table. Qui Gon slowly stood up and walked over to where you were standing. “I can tell your stressed. I am too.” He said, giving your hand a squeeze. 

“I’m just so tired.” You said in a shaky voice. “I know darling, but its the end of the day now. Get cleaned up and come rest.” He gently kissed the top of your head and handed you a clean pair of shirts and tank top. 

You smiled taking the clothes from his hands. Even though he’d only held them for a second they smelled like him. 

Your turned around and took of your outer layer of clothes so you were in a sports bra and panties. Qui Gon sat on the cot behind you and watched your body as you changed. Not in a provocative way, but in a mesmerized way. 

You took a rag and soaked in in some water and quickly washed off the sand and sweat from the day. 

You quickly put on the fresh clothes and turned around to see Qui Gon with a small smile on his face. “What?” “Nothing, you're just beautiful.” You walked over to the cot and laid down so your head was on his thigh. He played with your hair and you closed your eyes enjoying his touch. 

“I love you Qui Gon.” “I love you too my darling.” 

“You look cute together.”

You both jumped and looked at the door to see Obi Wan leaning against the door with a smirk on his face. Qui Gon opened his moth but was cut off by Obi Wan “Don’t worry, your secrets safe with me, as long as I’m invited to the wedding.” He said jokingly. 

You both let out a sigh of relief “Thank you Obi Wan, and of course you can be invited to the wedding.” 

“Can I make the rings!” Anakin yelled, clearly eavesdropping on the conversation. “Oncourse little Jedi.” “Yay!” He ran over and jumped up onto you and Qui Gon giving you a hug.

Required or inspired: Continuing education courses key to lifelong learning

Although continuing education courses aren’t required in Maryland, Suburban Hospital still covers up to $500 for education related to nurses’ specialty certifications.

“This can include a prep course for the certification, continuing education to maintain the certification, or even the cost of the certification exam itself,” said Theresa Mazzaro, RN, CHCR, senior talent acquisition specialist at Suburban Hospital, a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine in Bethesda. “We also include in this reimbursement amount for any educational opportunity that is directly related to their specific role within the hospital (could be a conference that offers continuing education).”

Helping to cover the cost of continuing education is an important employer benefit and a win-win for not only nurses but also the institutions for which they work, according to Mazzaro.

“For our nurses, just knowing that they have the opportunity to continue to learn and grow in their profession speaks volumes for the hospital that provides these opportunities,” she said.

The state of mandatory continuing education

As of December 2018, 42 states required continuing education courses for RN license renewal, according to our resource on nursing continuing education requirements by state. Colorado and Arizona are among the states that don’t require RNs to complete continuing education hours before renewing their licenses.

Employer reimbursement for continuing education is a common benefit, but it’s by no means universal.

According to our 2018 Nursing Salary Research Report, 39% of the 4,520 nurses nationwide responding to our salary survey indicated they received reimbursement or paid continuing education as an employer benefit. About 1,276 respondents noted they received an average of $2,619 in continuing education reimbursement per year.

Continuing education requirements vary by state. Nursing boards and states regulating themselves for continuing education requirements, according to Maria Morales, MSN, RN, CPAN, director of clinical education at OnCourse Learning Healthcare, a Relias company.

One trend among states is continuing education is more topic specific than in the past. States focus on timely topics such as pain management and human trafficking, according to Robert Hess, PhD, RN, FAAN, who has since retired from Nurse.com.

For example, RNs in Florida must complete 24 hours of continuing education courses during each renewal period, including two hours relating to prevention of medical errors. In addition to the 24 hours of general continuing education required, RNs in the state must complete two hours of domestic violence continuing education every third renewal for a total of 26 hours.

“Continuing education is something that nurses can use to demonstrate they stay current,” Hess said. “The other aspect of CE is for all the hospitals that might want to become Magnet or want to stay Magnet, there’s a CE provision that a certain percentage of nurses have to be certified within their specialty. And to get re-certified most people don’t retake the test, they do it by continuing education.”

Continuing education is essential beyond license renewal

More nurses are certified than in the past, which propels a greater need for continuing education, Hess said.

Overall, 40% of RNs surveyed in our salary report stated they were professionally certified.

Yet another reason for the need for continuing education — a hospital’s status.

Hospitals certified in acute stroke care, for example, might require nurses to complete continuing education tied to the hospital’s status, according to Hess, who, as founder of Shared Governance, accredits hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to shared governance.

The future of continuing education might look different than it does today, according to Hess.

“We had been talking about this for ANCC for years,” said Hess, who was part of a think tank at the American Nurses Credentialing Center that looked at continuing education without time as a metric. “When I was vice chair of the Commission on Accreditation eight years ago, we were talking about how it would be nice to have meaningful continuing education that’s based on competency instead of hours. ANCC moved on this and is actually accepting these from a few accredited CE providers. One day people will not be taking continuing education and measuring it by hours.”

Regardless of how continuing education is completed or whether it’s mandatory, lifelong learning is an important concept in the nursing profession and healthcare quality, according to Morales.

“We want healthcare workers to stay informed about the latest evidence-based practice and knowledge, the latest standards in the field and research, so that they can provide quality care,” Morales said. “Continuing education is very important for staying current in one’s knowledge and practice. Employers may find that the more they invest in supporting learning, training, professional development and continuing education, a higher quality of worker and care may result. It’s important to make time for learning. If an employer offers continuing education benefits but makes it hard for the learner to have any time to actually complete coursework, then the full benefit may not be seen.”

Most swimmers find it difficult to swim straight in open water towards a buoy or other target while training, swimming recreationally or during competition. In the absence of swimming lanes, swimmers tend to “zig-zag” through the water, wasting precious energy and slowing their performance. Many swimmers suffer from anxiety because there is no swimming lane and of course, there is no line visible at the bottom of the lake. Many athletes avoid both the sport of open water swimming and triathlons because of the swimming component, simply because they cannot swim straight in open water or master “sighting.”

The Solution

Our patent pending point-and-click design will allow the athlete to store a compass heading with a single button press. This simple yet elegant design then provides real time feedback to the swimmer through a small LED array in each eyepiece. Using a variety of sensors OnCourse Goggles will analyze the direction you are swimming to help you swim straight in open water. As you veer off course, the LEDs will notify you what direction you need to swim in order to remain on course as well as the severity of deviation. It’s tough for open-water swimmers to cut through waves in a straight line. OnCourse Goggles keep them on track, no surfacing necessary. To set a route, a swimmer sights a way-point and clicks a button to lock it into an electronic compass and shore up the path. Green, yellow and red LEDs in the corner of each eye provide direction. Green in both means on course, red in the right eye means veer left, and vice versa.

When you’re swimming in the right direction, an LED above each eye glows green. When you start to veer off course, the individual LEDs will switch to yellow, and then red, to indicate that you’re swimming in the wrong direction. Once you reach your checkpoint and want to set a new course, you just look in the direction of another target and hit the button on the side of the goggles again.
