Because there's no Princess Aurora, without Briar Rose! 🌹

She was another kind of challenge, but a challenge nonetheless 👀 This time I wanted to stray from the usual sweet expression, and went more with a "bratty" one 😁

Problem is, when trying to achieve it, it's so easy to actually step into "evil smile" territory 🤣

This repaint was actually my second attempt, after the first one I decided to take a day or two to really study her mold, and finally get what wasn't working...In the end, I went the hard way, and partially resculpted her face, while afraid to ruin a LE head, I knew I wouldn't have been satisfied otherwise, go big or go home basically 😅

For the dress, I've mostly kept the original concept in mind, with the same colors I remember from the VHS (the palette of the outfit on the restored version is too gray for my taste, give me the cream, the turtle dove, the beige, the maroon!!), saving the tiny spinning wheel embroidery on the corset...it seems like this doll has been one big experiment from start to finish 👀

In the end, I love how she turned out, and most of all I'm glad I didn't give up on the expression, I really hate to take the easy way, I know it would have frustrated me too much to leave untouched 😵‍💫

Better make that kind of decision at the start of the process than at the end 🫠

I just watched Sleeping Beauty (1959) for the first time in quite a while

And there's my usual thoughts of "I love this", "Disney now can't do anything remotely close to these masterpieces", "The art style is gorgeous", "oh I wish movies like these were back"

Then I realized something

There's this argument, mostly regarding the older Disney princesses like Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora that they fall in love with a man they met once

And I've never cared for that argument because I thought it's a fairy tale so anything can happen, including love at first sight. So as long as the story at the end, is nice, I don't mind it.

But upon watching Sleeping Beauty this time, I realized that this is a soul-mate universe

Like, there's a bunch of soul-mate universe settings out there: a red string of fate, count down timer, the first sentence ever said to each other etc.

This one is dream sharing: I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream

Aurora herself even said she dreamed of talking and walking with Phillip multiple times

I don't know it's just this awareness/headcanon is kinda cool to me

it's past Christmas now so I can post the drawing I did for my friend's gift

Aurora was born to a loving family, after many, many years of trying to conceive. Her birth was a miracle, and the kingdom loved her dearly, even though she was but a few weeks old.

Unbeknownst to her father, Aurora's mother had descended from the world of fae. She would one day have to return to her kingdom and become queen, or pass Aurora on as the heir to the throne. Maleficent, a dark fairy who had a desire for the throne herself, felt even more slighted when the royals refused to invite her to Aurora's naming ceremony.

Because of this, Aurora is cursed to mortality. She will die on her eighteenth birthday, should she prick her finger upon a cursed spindle. The Three Good Fairies mended the curse slightly, making it so Aurora would fall into a death-like sleep instead, unless love awakens her first.

The story is one you know. But Aurora struggles greatly with her new reality as princess, and even more with the fact she is heir to the Fae Kingdom. Her story after the Awakening Kiss is what I want to focus on for her muse.
