Transformers Energon 2003 - Omnicon Skyblast - Skyblast is a young Omnicon, capable of great speed during flight. In jet mode, his Ariel maneuvers are considered an artform by his Autobot allies and Decepticon enemies. In robot mode, he possesses a powerful arsenal of piercing energon weapons that he wields with great confidence and grace. His favorite weapon is an Energon claw, which he has used to humble some of the toughest Decepticons. Although Skyblast is a skilled tactician and warrior, he feels that his time is better spent practicing his famed ariel stunts.

We've heard people talk about it, it's unfortunately a misinterpretation of translation error (what was supposed to be meant was that she took the role of being a leader and idol. The Energon show kind of er, falls short on getting across a lot of what Super Link was about) but that's not going to stop us from headcanoning that. It's especially humorous to us because Energon Arcee is the first one to have the curved tail crest that IDW Arcee later on is well known for having, and that is a thing Energon Arcee had because she was originally intended to be Elita One (and in the Japanese version of the show, Super Link, is called Ariel). We don't have it concretely written out (at the moment) that IDW Arcee's tail crest comes from Energon Arcee we'd have to confirm that, but seems the most obvious answer.
In any event we were first made aware of the trans energon arcee read by some wiki folks in 2022, if memory serves. it is a favorite of ours and personally if energon arcee ever makes a return it would be nice to see the read canonized or at least homaged by having her be trans for some other reason (the whole finding your trans galness through your leadership career by and for the people thing is very appealing admittedly)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I never hear anyone talk about how energon Arcee is trans because she starts out as a male Omnibot that all look like the image on the left except the jets but when she discovers Super Energon it reformatted her into her body on the right.

Transformers Energon AU notes
After the ignition of the first Energon Sun, the revival of the “Q System” of planets, and Unicron’s sabotage to prevent the Decepticons from abusing his power, Alpha Q is restored to his original child form: a humanoid type Quintesson and joins the Autobots. While technically the older one between the two, as a physically 8 year old boy by human standards, he becomes Kicker, Misha, and Sally’s kid brother, and really latches on to the teens and the other Autobots, not wanting to let a second chance at found family slipping away. In the absence of his original father figure, Scorponok, he is additionally protected by Blackout, a sentient, ninja like variant of the Divebomb Terrorcons.
Demolisher, Cyclonus and Tidal Wave have all tragically died during the mid stage of the Energon War, with their reformatted selves replaced by Wheeljack (now a Mercenary hired by the Decepticons), Slugslinger and Sharkticon. Snowcat does appear still, but is revealed to be Cyclonus’ cousin (better played off by their Japanese names in Sandstorm/Snowstorm). Other Mercenaries hired by Starscream and Scorponok that appear off and on include the red hot spider bot Airachnid who the Insecticons are smitten over, and the brother and sister duo Iguanus and Pythona. Pythona doesn’t think very highly of Galvatron, knowing full well what he was like as Megatron, and mostly sticks around out of amusement to see how Galvatron will foul things up for himself this time. Iguanas is the more business minded of the two, and negotiates contracts and payment in Energon over his more lackadaisical and foul mouthed kid sister who isn’t afraid to tell Galvatron where to shove it.
The Autobots are joined by the Dinobots, created by Primus to help better battle the animalistic Terrorcons. Besides Grimlock and Swoop, they are joined by Grimstone and his drones who can become Volcanicus Maximus. Grimlock has a semi playful rivalry with Kicker, always teasing him and giving him a taste of his own teenage angst nonsense. The Dinobots seem to have an affection for Misha in particular, and usually listen to what she says over Optimus and Kicker.
Other teens help out the Autobots, Braverman and Dean, who are the sons of prominent scientists and shareholders of the Energon operation on Earth. They help survey planets for Energon using Cyberhawks like Laserbeak and Mini-Con Dinobots (Dile and Zaur with the cheerful Braverman while Graphy and Noise are partnered with the more surly Dean). The boys are heavily implied to be a couple, with Hot Shot remarking how opposites truly do attract to Ironhide’s confusion. The boys are also accompanied by the eccentric adventurer Outback (retool of Cliffjumper) and his doting and no less adventurous wife Cindersaur (retool of Grimlock) who everyone affectionately calls “Cindy”. The two can Powerlinx, with a running gag where they playfully flirt on who gets to be on top. Dean is Kicker’s cousin on Miranda’s side, while Braverman is Misha’s childhood friend. Both boys grew up at the Cosmoscope Research Center Village like Rad, Carlos and Alexis did and were among the little kids who befriended the Mini-Cons at the Carnival and are not so secretly Transformer geeks to Jetfire’s annoyance,
Similar to the anime, the next major arc is protecting Alpha Q’s restored planets, but the main difference is they’re now all inhabited by other Transformers and alien life forms for more toyetic possibilities.
Blizzard Planet: Populated by the Xetaxxians, based on their organic forms from IDW. A legend by the locals speaks of a mighty Blizzard Saber that helped forge the Xetaxxians into the race they are today. They’re the lost Cryo Saber Mini-Con Team, and an item of interest to Snowcat to look good in front of Galvatron. The Dinobots hate this planet, with Grimlock famously refusing to help because “Ice Age kill Dinosaurs on Earth” after hanging up abruptly on Optimus.
Iron Planet: A primitive rocky world populated by pseudo mechanical lifeforms made of a Sentio Metallico equivalent, making them compatible with Transformers for Powerlinx. Most of the life is in a prehistoric, animalistic state such as Morphobots, Iron Wolves, Rust Giants, the Iron Bird (the G1 Asteroid Bird creature), Iron Spiders, and more. Some of them, via the power of Alpha Q’s Energon and the Combination Spark, allow Optimus to combine with them into Iron Optimus (Iron Convoy). Galvatron learned the hard way harvesting Energon here may prove difficult than previously thought when his Insecticons were devoured voraciously by a stray pocket of Morphobots embedded in an Energon deposit.
Rock Planet: The Lithone equivalent, the sister planet to Iron Planet. Lithones like Kranix, Arblus, the Rock Lords and the various Infernac Transformers from Legacy reside here. Kranix works with the Autobots and Omnicons to study Energon and fend off Terrorcons. It’s Kranix in particular that helps recognize the transformation capabilities of the other planets’ residents, which allows each world’s populace to fight back and Powerlinx with the Autobots. Bouldercrash in particular is Powerlinx compatible with Ironhide, Jetfire and Cliffjumper. Optimus Prime can combine with the planet’s leader, Metamorphus Prime, into Igneous Prime.
Circuit Planet: A pseudo cyberformed race track planet built and used by the royal Alpha Q family as a vacation home. Alpha Q was particularly excited to have it restored. Populated by other Quintessons and Transformers who naturally are huge racing nuts, and the planet has something of a rivalry with Velocitron by the time of Cybertron. The ancient Combiner Teams Rallybots and Stunticons hail from this planet, with their presence implying a reservoir of Super Energon is hidden somewhere, but rumored it can only be found by winning the Quintessa Grand Prix. Wheeljack develops a fondness for the planet and coaxes the turbo revving and ultra competitive Stunticons to help the Terrorcons gather Energon.
Ocean Planet: Nicknamed Waterworld by Kicker, it’s a planet seemingly devoid of Dryland, though some aerial recon by Jetfire, Bulkhead, Swoop, and Skyblast shows there are above water land masses. Most of the Energon however is located underwater, where the Autobots have a disadvantage. Sharkticon is in his element here, prowling the waters with Cruellocks and Seacon type Terrorcons. The planet is populated by aquatic lifeforms, in particular the rare but beautiful creatures known as Kluds. The Sub-Atlanticans from G1 reside here and aren’t eager to share their Energon with anyone, but somewhat begrudgingly work with the Autobots as they correctly view Galvatron as the larger threat.
Jungle Planet: A pristine copy of Earth in its prehistory, populated by a cheerful amphibious race and various prehistoric creatures similar to Earth’s dinosaurs and the like. The Dinobots view this place as home away from home, the Dinobot Island equivalent, and it takes a lot of coaxing to make Grimlock want to leave it to help with other matters. The Mercenary Airachnid and the Terrorcon Insecticons along with Slugslinger and the Divebomb Terrorcons prove to be a constant annoyance, that the Dinobots fiercely protect the planet against. Mercenaries Iguanus and his sister Pythona sometimes raid this planet too with Cruellocks, but most of the time it’s just to blow off Galvatron and sunbathe/otherwise goof off.
Plains Planet: A lush grassland populated by wooden robots, affectionately dubbed “Arborbots” by the kids. Botanica is the main representative of these Transformers, and works closely with Kranix and Optimus’ science team. While Energon deposits are plentiful here, the Arborbots don’t use mine for it, instead having the ability to photosynthesize Energon in their bodies from the Energon sun instantaneously. They’re apparently an artificial offshoot of the Omnicons and Terrorcons, developed by Quintesson scientists prior to Planet Q’s destruction in an effort to better refine and gather Energon more efficiently. The Arborbots toywise are similar to the Weaponizer/Armorizor figures and can clip on to make weapons for the Autobots. Some of the Arborbots become prey of the Terrorcon Insecticons, though because of the high concentration of Energon in the wood bots’ bodies, it causes the Insecticons to overload and explode.
Planet Q: Alpha Q, Scorponok and the Terrorcons’ home planet. The Quintessons and Transformers here are actually INCREDIBLY ungrateful for Alpha Q’s hard work, to his shock, as they (somewhat rightfully) blame him for the planet’s original demise. Ousted by new rulers put in place to Kicker and Ironhide’s anger, the new rulers were blind sighted by the return of the Grand Chamberlain/Scorponok, who proceeded to annihilate the capital to excavate the Energon underneath. The rulers sheepishly try to radio the Autobots for help but Kicker initially tells them to fuck off, before Alpha Q and Rodimus takes command of the situation. The denizens are primarily the assorted recolors available of the Terrorcons, and various G1 and Armada character models used as generics. The Quintessons are largely just the G1 models, with a few retooled from Alpha Q’s Sharkticon like body.
Junk Planet: The only new planet in the AU. Literally built from the scraps of other planets digested by Unicron. It was originally a small moon of sorts that coalesced and orbited Unicron as he traveled the cosmos, but when Alpha Q commandeered Unicron’s corpse to recreate planets with Energon, the moon broke off and was exposed to Energon Sun radiation, causing life to begin anew. The result were the Junkions, viewed as sort of the country cousins to the Omnicons composed of scrap metal. Ruled by the cheerful and welcoming Wreck-Gar and the cold, untrusting Rum-Maj, the Junkions are traders and tinkerers by trade, using what they have at their disposal to literally cobble together something out of nothing. Energon is a precious commodity and hard to come by on Junkion, so they’re happy to trade Energon Stars for tools or help. Like G1, they talk TV with a bit of Internet meme culture, making them a bit hard to understand though Kicker, Sally, Dean and Braverman understand them. Wreck-Gar likes to call Kicker and Dean Misha’s and Braverman’s “shipoopi” after the Buddy Hackett song. Misha thinks it’s hilarious, Rum-Maj (also called a shipoopi) finds it endearing, but Kicker and Dean are mortified. The Junkions can Powerlink with each other and the Autobots, with those like Misha, Outback, Braverman, Kranix and Botanica finding the Junkions a biological mystery, being held together by duct tape, willpower and a prayer seemingly.

Dear, Vector Prime.
Could you tell us about Seeker-body Jetfire?
Tumblr media
Dear Sky Seeker,
Variations on this individual crop up all across the multiverse, under different names. The Jetfire I am familiar with was a famous explorer, celebrated for defeating the Star Seekers of the Blot Nebula. On one of his expeditions, he tracked the apocryphal AllSpark to a primitive Earth, only to discover to his dismay that the artefact's energon radiation interfered with his telemetry, causing him to crash-land on the North Pole. Unearthed millions of years later, he quickly upgraded himself into a new form with an external booster unit to improve his atmospheric flight capabilities and prevent a similar mishap occurring in future.
In another universe, this was the ex-Omnicon Skyblast, who felt a lack of purpose after the development of Cyber Key technology finally gave the Autobots the ability to boost their own power without relying on others. With his comrades no longer needing his abilities, he upgraded himself into a new Cyber Key-carrying form that would let him do for himself what he had done for them.
And in a negative-polarity universe you might be familiar with, this was none other than Starscream, back when he was a student at the Crystal City Science Institute. Optimus Prime captured him and branded him with an Autobot insignia, but Starscream flatly refused to help the bot who had leveled Crystal City before his very optics, and Prime threw him in a cell to rot—from which he was eventually rescued by Megatron, who had pioneered the art of transformation. Starscream took this innovation and helped develop yet more complex transformations, upgrading himself several times over the ages to meet the demands of an ever-escalating war.

We find it extremely funny how apparently the way Transformers writers solved the weird discrepancy between how many male and female Cybertronians there are was to just go. "Hey, they're an asexual species anyways. What if they're all born with masc-leaning presentation, but once they came in contact with aliens that have sexual dimorphism, some of them were like 'Yoooooo girl is an option?????' and started going by she." So every femformer is canonically a trans girl now.

ENERGON BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
Tumblr media
February's Patreon @tfwiki pic update is on 2004's ENERGON, the awkward middle child of the Unicron Trilogy. Caught in the early stage of explosive franchise growth and pulled in too many directions. But there's good stuff in there. ROADBLOCK remains a solid, fun toy, turning from robot to crane-truck to heavily-armed half of a two-robot combiner.
Tumblr media
The Autobots' two-bot-combiners gimmick was certainly an interesting attempt, but TOW-LINE really took the gimmick to more interesting places than most. He's his own combiner, with the lower half of his vehicle mode turning into a mobile battle-sled-thing separate from his robot mode.
Tumblr media
Store exclusives were rare in Armada, but by Energon, Hasbro was ready to start pumping them out again, and boy did they. CHECKPOINT, a rededo of Rodimus, came in a Kmart "SWAT" 2-pack with a similarly deco'd Prowl. Back when Kmart was still a thing.
Tumblr media
The Decepticons, rather than combining, got "hyper modes" and alternate vehicle modes that deployed more weapons. SIX SHOT, a redeco of Shockblast, is one of the better attempts, having a considerably-different "satellite" mode on top of his space-tank altmode.
Tumblr media
Oh lawd he comin. OMEGA SENTINEL, a redeco of Omega Supreme, splits into a "construction vehicle" and "cruiser", each with a "platform" mode. The two can also join to for a "Cybertronian Armored Supertrain" but that wouldn't fit in the lightbox. Plus he can merge with Optimus Prime! Okay mainly he's a suit Prime wears, but there's attachment points for all of Prime's drone-vehicles as well.
Tumblr media
With the franchise taking off, Hasbro looked to fill out Energon with more stuff. This Deluxe version of the Mini-Con HIGH WIRE came with a figure of human ally Kicker, rendered in the style of the then-current G.I.Joe toys. This set seemingly was not engineered by Takara, and it kinda shows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of... oof. This set. Not to editorialize too much, but... the MEGA-DINOBOT set of GRIMLOCK and SWOOP is... well. Bad. Originally intended for the Universe line, it got shuffled into Energon, and similarly wasn't engineered by Takara. The result is a floppy, awkward mess. One of the very, very few Transformers toys in its 40-year run I'd call "bad".
(Also... yes, I re-did the Grimlock pic. Back in October, I used archive imagery for that update because, frankly, I'd forgotten I still owned this set. Upon discovery, I decided to redo the pic so it's crisper and better positioned. Still not a good toy though.)
Tumblr media
Mind you... it's not like things were all roses on the other hemisphere. Takara made SL GRAND CONVOY, a smaller version of Optimus Prime without any of the good points of the larger figure. What IS that torso mode?! (This is the shinier "SL Grand Convoy & Kicker" 2-pack version. And it broke. Super-tight ankle joints made from clear-plastic? A recipe for disaster.)
Tumblr media
Didn't mean to end on a down note. Here, have a pic of one of the line's absolute highlights, the Omnicons and Terrorcons, and their buildable energon weapons.
Energon was kind of all over the map, trying a lot and maybe lacking a strong cohesive theme because of it. Some damn good stuff, but also some genuine misses.
If you enjoy these runs through Transformers toy history, please consider tossing a coin into my Patreon ("gregstfwikipics" at patreon dot com). More support means I can devote more time to bigger updates with more images each month. There's still loads to do!

Prior to Energon, I was toying with other characters in Armada, and settled on Optimus and the kids reuniting with a squad on Cybertron. Besides the inclusion of the Beast Wars toys (with Rattrap, Waspinator and more included), the unit is lead by Ariel, who in this universe is Optimus’ kid sister. Plucky, resourceful but still a kid who was forced to take on responsibilities too soon, she’s an excellent commander and knows no fear, but she’d rather hangout with Rad and the others to get a semblance of the Transformer equivalent of childhood.
Ariel is often accompanied by her best friend Dion, a well meaning head in the clouds type. A decent warrior, but he’s better behind a computer helping that way. He forms a friendship with Billy & Fred, and tags along with them and Cheetor on missions while on Cybertron.
By the time of Energon, Ariel has grown as a commander, leading a unit of Omnicons and coordinating efforts in Energon mining, but is still a kid and sometimes will abandon duties during a lull to goof off with Sally, Billy, Fred, Dean and Braverman. She often accompanies her brother Optimus on missions, to help out but also keep an eye on him because she’s worried about Optimus’ wellbeing after the Unicron Battles. Ariel and Sally bond over their brothers being who they are.
Dion works closely with Autobot and human scientists and technicians to maintain the Energon Towers and Cities. He’s truly in his element and a bit of a workaholic by this point, leading to Ariel having to tow him away to get him to hang out with her, Billy & Fred. Dion’s made a new work friend in Tow-Line, and tends to live through him via transmissions sent by Tow-Line to keep an eye on everyone.
By Cybertron, Ariel has grown and reformatted into Elita-1, but during the mass exodus when the black hole appeared, she, Dion, (a now teenage) Alpha Q and others got left behind on Cybertron by accident, and were thought lost by Optimus’ team when Cybertron was consumed. When it was revealed Cybertron survived, so too did Elita’s group, who were fighting off malfunctioning Terrorcons trying to steal Energon, and the pesky Scrapmetals who mutated from Cybertronic vermin when exposed to the black hole’s energy.
Dion had since become a fan of racing and is a big fan of Circuit Planet’s Rallybots. When contact of Velocitron got reestablished, Dion got into a friendly rivalry with Velocitronian racing fans when the Rallybots and Stunticons entered the Speedia 500.
