OUT OF DARKNESS - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Bleecker Street Media
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: Set some 45,000 years ago, a group of six people are struggling to find a new home having embarked on a perilous journey across the narrow sea. Starving and desperate, they seek shelter and set out towards distant mountains, hoping to find the caves. As night falls, eerie sounds in the landscape hint at the presence of something dangerous and monstrous. As tension unravels the group the determination of one young woman reveals the horrifying acts people resorted to in order to survive.
REVIEW: Oliver Kassman, the producer, described OUT OF DARKNESS to director Andrew Cumming as a horror movie set in the Paleolithic era. Both filmmakers were inspired by classic horror movies such as "Alien" (1979), "The Hills Have Eyes" (1977), "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974), and "The Thing" (1981). They shared an appreciation for environmental terrors, astonishing world-building, and the fundamentally human horrors depicted in these movies.
Kassman and Cumming aimed to create a setting that would allow their characters to symbolize various aspects of human nature, including the good, the bad, the heroic, the evil, and the tragic.
In this intriguing plot, a captivating ensemble of six characters takes center stage. The core group of four is bound by familial ties: a father, his pregnant wife, their young son, and the father's brother. An elder and a mysterious woman, referred to as "the stray," complete the ensemble. The narrative begins by recounting their arrival in this hostile land and gradually unravels the intricacies of their group dynamics.
Their lack of provisions in this harsh environment make the group's immediate priorities securing food and shelter. As night falls, an unseen entity abducts the son, escalating tensions within the group. Ultimately, they are compelled to venture into the predator's lair, the dark forest.
What distinguishes these characters is their freedom from the complexities of contemporary individuals. Guided by simple beliefs and basic motivations, their primary focus is survival. As a result, the story offers a compelling examination of the human condition. When the third act unfolds, the characters are faced with the chilling consequences of their actions.
I found this to be a refreshing and unadulterated study of human nature, an engaging exploration of the fundamental concepts of good and evil. In contrast to many contemporary genre films that rely heavily on effects and horror icons, this narrative delves into these profound themes with a raw and authentic approach.
Filmed in Scotland, the movie presents a unique landscape that deviates from typical expectations of a "stone age" setting. While vegetation is present, the environment exudes a barrenness comparable to a desert. Despite the absence of live animals, the production designers skillfully showcase the predator's presence through its handiwork. The cinematography masterfully generates an intense atmosphere as this entity stalks the characters at night, contrasting the sweeping grandeur of the landscape during daytime. The film's sound design and score are exceptional, predominantly relying on a variety of drums creating the base of the score and chilling creature sounds that amplify the tension as the unseen predator moves in the darkness. A remarkable sequence depicts one of the characters engaging in a fierce battle with the predator while the others anxiously listen by the fire. The intense sounds and hair-raising battle cries heighten the suspense.
While the costume designs were well-crafted, I did have some reservations about their presentation. The costumes became suitably distressed as the film progressed, but they initially appeared too pristine and lacked a convincing level of aging. Additionally, the leggings or pants worn by the characters didn't quite capture the essence of the Paleolithic era. However, as the film unfolded, these concerns became less distracting. Despite these issues, I encourage viewers to not let them detract from their enjoyment of the film.
The film "OUT OF DARKNESS" showcases an outstanding ensemble cast. With exceptional talent, these actors skillfully portray the primal drives of their characters. Their performances are further elevated through the use of body language and expressive facial gestures. Dr. Daniel Andersson devised a unique language for the actors to speak in the film. Dubbed TOLA, an acronym for "The Origin Language" and the Sanskrit term signifying "weighing of gold," this language is a fusion of Arabic and select Basque vocabulary. It not only adds depth and intensity to their performances but also flows seamlessly from their lips.
"OUT OF DARKNESS" is a film worth seeing for its daring undertaking set in a specific time period. Under Andrew Cumming's artistic direction, the story, production values, and performances are skillfully interwoven. Similar to compelling science fiction, this film harnesses the power of horror elements to explore profound aspects of the human condition.
By situating the narrative in the past, the film distills it down to fundamental concerns, crafting a compelling tale of survival. I was thoroughly impressed with Andrew Cumming's achievement and eagerly anticipate his upcoming film projects.

Love Lies Bleeding Full Movie Watch Free Online
Love Lies Bleeding is a world of cinema as it combines romance and thriller, keeping in mind the next legendary filmmaking work by director Rose Glass. Having successfully amazed the public with her introduction, “Saint Maud,” she redirects her focus to another potent force of obsession (it has nothing to do with religion and faith this time), which is bodybuilding, and the question of why power (whatever the form) can get under the skin. In this sense, the picture comes into view as co-produced between the UK and the US, and it’s shooting in the late 1980s precisely because of the nice decade’s feel but later period cultural references.

The movie allows you to follow the story of Lou, a gym manager on the edge who has a life full of solitude, while suddenly she is forced to interact with Jackie, who is a transient bodybuilder’ who fights for an upcoming battle in Las Vegas. Under the directorship of Steven Soderbergh, the film, in which the characters played by Kristen Stewart, Anna Baryshnikov, and Dave Franco are the main cast, is in fact crowded with different feelings, utilizing the characters with the most intense wishes as the principal ones, who are all and sundry searching for someone or something passionately.
The film reaches about 400 screens across the US and is on the countdown for a wider release to reach even bigger audiences. An ever-growing tension has developed in its publicity for UK cinema audiences. A solid presentation of the performances and the film takes viewers on a journey of pondering the unbreakable strength and the equally fragility of being human. Needless to say, on top of everything, “Love Lies Bleeding also addresses the thin line between psychological and visceral aspects of human character.
Plot and themes
Las Vegas, late ’80s, displays this movie vividly; the film dramatizes the coexistence of the lives of the main characters. You will watch a gym owner, Lou, whose life will experience massive changes through his interaction with an upcoming bodybuilder called Jackie, whose goals stretch beyond the limit. Jackie’s existence becomes an unbridled power that pushes forward a succession of incidents, drawing more disclosure of courage and addiction on the dark side. The film will not only present the power motif and illusions about the nature of Las Vegas as Hollywood used to depict the city of sin, but also focus on many other issues.
Cast And Characters
Your experience of Love Lies Bleeding is shaped by the compelling portrayals delivered by the cast. Kristen Stewart stars as Lou, a gym manager absorbed in the realm of bodybuilding. Opposite Stewart, Katy O’Brian plays Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder on a relentless pursuit of victory. Supporting cast includes Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov as Daisy, Dave Franco, and Ed Harris, whose characters navigate through a web of ambition and obsession.

The film’s visual storytelling is entrusted to cinematographer Ben Fordesman, ensuring that each scene resonates with the themes of drive and excess. The backdrop of the 1980s is brought to life by Clint Mansell’s score, which accentuates the emotional landscape of the characters.

Your immersion into the 1980s bodybuilding scene is augmented by the authentic production design. The essence of the era is captured through set pieces that range from neon-lit gyms to the gritty environs of a local shooting range.
