Obsessed by a fairy tale, we spend our lives searching for a magic door and a lost kingdom of peace.

“…often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.”
Attributed to Helen Keller, 1929 (similar sayings had been in circulation already)

"The door's still peeling then" said Thomasina ... "Yep" replied Lucrezia. Thomasina squinted hard at the door for a few moments before saying "Sooooo we should continue to wait?" ... "Yep" said Lucrezia. Thomasina glanced at her friend before opening her mouth again "Aaaaand we don't know for how long?"
There was no response.
Thomasina blinked lots, drew several deep breaths and had her next question on the tip of her tongue, when she realised that Lucrezia had her only eyebrow raised. Never a good sign. Thomasina bit her tongue instead and swallowed her query. It tasted faintly of fish.
In the silence that followed, Thomasina took to shuffling her different sized feet, picking her ragged nails and pushing any further thoughts of conversation deep into her left, red shoe.
Insects hummed, clouds drifted and she was just about to risk some tuneless humming when Lucrezia darted foreward crying "Did you hear it!? Can you see it!?"
Thomasina cautiously eased towards the door and attempted to look without crowding Lucrezia.
Lucrezia slowly stretched her arm out and, using her forefinger and thumb, eased the peeling veneer a little further away from the main part of the door.
Two words could be seen ... crackled whispering could be heard ... and the hairs on both their necks began to raise and twitch.
Thomasina, mouth gaping, for once, remained speechless ...
