My supervisor finally got approval for me and a coworker to clean out our work trailer and shed, and it is GLORIOUS. It was getting so bad. It wasn't organized to start with, and then we had three projects end and all the project stuff just got dumped to us and piled up in coolers. Plus two local projects that we had supplies for that were never returned to the lab. Every project we go to, everyone just buys new things, so we had 12 folding tables, 13 shovels (+1 small shovel, +2 flat headed shovels), four printers, 15 storage bins (which we use for specific projects, then just leave everything in there), three packs of water (who knows how old), 60 home depot 5-gal buckets, etc. Stuff like that. All for a company of about 60 employees.
We've made 3 dump runs and have at least one left. We've got a donate run to make. We have a manageable number of tools (though still probably more wrenches than ANYONE needs). You can actually walk through the trailer and shed now, which was getting pretty dicey. The equipment is all labeled and up on shelves. Everything is out of boxes/coolers/trash bags so you can actually see it now. (We had like 4000' of various tubing...all kept in trash bags that just kept getting piled up in a corner; thankfully that's cut down and now all out on a shelf). The tool cabinet is organized and labeled. PPE is sorted out and separated. Paperwork is consolidated in one place. There's working spaces in both the trailer and the shed. We used magnetic labels for everything, so anything can be moved at any time and easily re-organized and still be easily found. There's way more of a flow, and damn has doing this been way better than office work.
People are NOT gonna recognize these spaces when they see them. The change is actually incredible. There's a whole empty wall in the trailer now, and before we had maybe five square feet to move about. We just had a local project finish, and I honestly felt terrible about how the team must have dealt because there was really NOWHERE to calibrate equipment or store samples because there wasn't even room to move. Now we have a whole entire workstation set up for them, plus they have two tables they can store samples on. I'm super excited for the manager of that project to see it because he's going to shit a brick.

How did you become a hospice worker, and are you like a hospice nurse, or more in admin? Were you a healthcare major, or did you get into it through other means? I'm an English major, but if my plan to work in education doesn't work, I think healthcare (but like in admin) would work for me
I'm a Medical Office Administrator, which means I basically make sure everything in the service runs as smoothly as possible.
Things I do include but are not limited to:
Creating and updating forms and other patient documentation
Creating and updating patient information like brochures, pamphlets, etc.
Working with Admissions to make sure visits are entered in the province's digital health records
Patient database and chart work - keeping things organized and up to date, making sure reports get to the correct nurse, dismantling charts after patients die to send to health records, etc.
Organizing training/education for our team and for the public
General clerical tasks like keeping track of and ordering supplies for both office and nursing needs, assembling PPE kits (for when patients have COVID and the nurses need to be decked out in full gowns/masks/visors/etc.), taking minutes at team meetings, etc.
Helping with the Intake Triage program - answering patient/public calls, paperwork to set up new admissions, assembling new charts, database entry, booking appointments, etc.
When the hospital unit actually opens (right now we have no doctor for it so it's not, we just see people in the community) I'll likely be responsible for more stuff, like patient/family arrangements, helping with transfers, etc.
As far as schooling goes:
I went to NSCC and took Office Administration, then ended up continuing on to take specifically Medical Office Administration. So, 2 years total for me, but you are able to skip OA and jump right into MOA if you want, I know plenty who have done so
MOA is typically a 1-2 year program
Courses are a mixture of office-related and healthcare related - so for example, I studied things like Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Terminology, as well as Spreadsheets lol
There's actually a ton of different healthcare jobs you can get with an MOA certificate, because every single program needs at least one, you know? You could work in a lab, you could work in a doctor's office, you could work in hospital admissions, you could work in the ER, you could work in a clinic somewhere... the list goes on and on
How I ended up with my job specifically:
NSCC has a workplace practicum program, where they place you somewhere in your field for a month and you gain hands on experience. What happened with me is I got placed with Hospice-Palliative Care, and they liked me so much that I got hired right out of college! So I really lucked out with my job. If not, I probably would've pursued working in a lab somewhere; that was my original goal until I did my practicum and fell in love with the hospice field

called dentist again after they rescheduled me and the person i spoke to "simply couldnt answer my questions" since it was her FIRST DAY I GUESS ( AND NOBODY WAS HELPING HER???) regaurding some weird surcharges they said i deifntely had to pay. so called back a while later so idk. she can get trained i guess. was told yep defintielly have to pay for PPE myself. WHAT??? tell her um thats odd ive never had a dentist charge me that before and she gets a tone and is like "WELL have u gone to the dentists since covid?" and im like yes.... the as frequently as my insur4nce allows and this IS weird to me. try asking if its necessary and shes running around not answering "idk whay i have to pay for the dentists medical supplies" "its for YOUR safety not the doctors" -> endless dodging the questions. ask her how much its supposed to cost. she says 'WELL IDK i dont work the office its dependant on yr insu.rance' 'okay.... can u run my insu.rance then' 'NO I CANT thats not my j0b i cant access that' 'okay can u transfer me to soemone who can' 'nobody else is in the office u have to call back ether ____day or ____day between X hours' 'okay well i wish someone had given me this information last time i called instead of jsut saying i can call back anytime' 'I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER WHAT HAPPENED it just happened' 'okay ye im telling u about..... a problem... that is happening in Your offi.ce.... so idk... maybe u can fix it.... anyway i guess ill jsut... take this info moving forward and call back [first day she mentioned]' 'YOU CANT CALL THAT DAY were closed then' 'you literally jsut told me to call then. but fine. ill call [other day she mentioned] i guess. thanks bye')
this was after they apparently scheduled me for when the doctor was KNOWN to be out of town and i had to then reschedule. got condescendedly spoken down about it by this cunt today too about how the doctor HAD to go and she already had this time booked out so they CANT JSUT reschedule for ONE patient and i go yeah cool. so if u knew about it why the fuck did i get scheduled then IN THE FIRST PLACE
