Perhaps the most noticeable and improbable thing about HK is that it is pinned up against a hillside of immense proportions. Noticeable because it is so steep, improbable because somehow they attach buildings of such monstrous proportions to it. These are tall buildings; Liam's apartment includes a rooftop on floor 28 and his is a shorter building than many. Land is so expensive that it has to be managed and be efficiently utilised. To this end, outdated buildings are demolished and the city echos to the sound of pile drivers fixing foundations and clearing space for new ones. Foundations go deep through many meters of sand before they hit bedrock. A thoughtful aid to the weary wayfarer, city planners have installed escalators that will convey you effortlessly up the steep roads whilst also being sheltered from the effects of the sun although during the course of the day they will change direction; down for the morning, up afternoon for workers going to and fro to work. Space is at an absolute premium so cost of property is astronomical. Most people rent the smallest of space for a huge price; the most expensive real estate in the world. The streets as well being narrow and steep, charmingly retain the vestages of colonial rule, Peel St, Staunton St, Elgin St, Wellington St. Shelley St. We looked round market halls selling everything including frogs. Saw ladies working a Singer sewing machine in a roadside cabinet the size of an office cupboard. In a city built on commerce, there's a place for everyone.
We then caught the rattling tram to Kennedy Town which is at the furthest extent of the underground system. The old tram unit, running off overhead wires clattered its way through streets and streets of anonymous identical tower blocks, the sort you would wonder if you would ever find again, especially after an SB or two. Breakfast was interesting. Pretty much every meal is structured the same way; what do you want with your rice? Chicken, pork or in my case goose. It was fatty, tender, tasty, greasy and absolutely fantastic.
Underground back into town , Wan Chai and up to top floor in Poppinjays for a refreshing tonic and then take the Peak Tram to Peak Hill, the highest hill on Hong Kong island at 552 meters. The funicular railway system which is 130 years old but recently renovated climbs swiftly up the hill of gradients between 4 and 25.7 degrees! The views from the top are completely stunning, looking down on the tops of buildings which from below seem to dissappear to the skies but from here look like spikes in the road. But then raise your gaze to the horizon, across the sea, across Kowloon Island and beyond passing the mountain range and there's the mainland of the People's Republic of China! It is remarkable that when creation looks about as good as it gets, mankind can add a finishing touch with the built environment to make it look just perfect.
A short stroll through shaded lanes and we reached the Governor's Summer Lodge. Now a park open to the public and an extremely lovely relaxing place to end an afternoon with tremendous views across the city.
ps. It's has been very warm today and the humidity seemed higher.
pss. Calamari tonight!

Personal: We Are Home
The trip was lovely. Goth Millenial and New Millenial and I stayed with my two oldest continuous friends, Karjack and Werepixy and their four delightful cats. The city has changed a lot, to the point of being disorienting because so many businesses and entire buildings had been replaced and even key chunks of street. My favorite food stall was still at saturday market, an Afghanistani place that must have been there 40ish years. New Millenial fell in love with their food. They got to soak up the very different culture of the city and made several exciting perchases.
One day, I took them to the little art museum which has a fine asian art collection for it's size. We had new york style pizza in my beloved 19th and earliest century graveyard, though the piper of my youth was long gone. Another day we met with a friend of one of the millenials in a park. They got to see the fancy architecture at the New Library. We play tested a tRPG werepixy is going to be running at a convention later this Autumn. Mostly we just hung out.
Karjack made each of us a custom scent before we left on our last night there and a soecial thing for my nails (my immune system's been extra brutal on them lately), and some scented epsom. All three of the custom scents were lovely. Mine is a mix of marigold, clary sage, imortelle, and cardamom, something I couldn't have gotten anywhere else and off the beaten path, but I saw it in my head when they let us smell there esential oil collection. I had back ups if it didn't work, to substitute out, but i'm pretty good at knowing what goes with what at this point and could mix them in had head an had a pretty good idea of what the final product would be like. It was even better with karjack's knowledge of proportion than even I had pictured. (They mixed a proper perfume with carrier oils. DO NOT put essential oils on your skin, pets or in your mouth). I am just a sucker for herbal/wood blends and i've a fondess for more subtle floral notes like geranium, daisy, carnation, etc. mixed with them. The Millenials were delighted with theirs are well, even Goth Millenial, who is super sensative to scents, but who likes smelling like a forest it turns out.
Neither of my cats knew fuck all about suitcases and I had never been gone longer than a day, so they didn't have any idea what was happening. Squirrel described them as mellow and well behaved. I strongly suspect they were mourning me. tavy had two panic attacks the first hour and a half i was home and is needing Lots of reassurance in between attempts to maul me. It took Livia about two hours to decide i was neither ghost nor doppleganger and decide to let me pet her. As I have to be up anyway for laundry reasons, I unpacked and cleaned and bathed, and am now trying to re-establish normal routine for them.
Squirrel'd changed the bed pads after an incident, but Livia also hit the area in front of the bedroom litterbox as I anticipated. Tavy, miracle of miracles did not rin Livia's desk box. Nhe did piss all over his desk box, got three layers of sofa and an extra pad I left over there, expecting this, but also managed to pee all over my desk in the area between Livia's box and my computer, getting so [paper work and the three mpty pills bottles i'd tuckedthere to remind myself to phone them in on my return. I had to do a lot of cleaning and go through the urgent paperwork pile to make sure nothing esseential got hit.
The reason I am up writing is because I need the pads to all be in the dryer before bed, as I need to use the bed pads to cover the sofa, and I'll need them back when I get up.
There is a rather large housing related problem that occured while I was away. It is catastrophic and bullshit and I'm not up to explaining tonight. We're going to try to fight it, but it's possible we are completely fucked out of the blue and not remotely our fault. Fucking Boomers.
I already contacted my social worker and have a government agency I can try to contact, though I'm not particularly sanguine they can help or help fast enough, even though what the fucking boomers are doing doesn't look legal on it's face. I've set squirrel to trying to contact the residents who were trying to organize against the august $141 rate increase to see what they are planning and at minimum to see if we can organize some sort of campaign against to boomers in charge who are trying to fuck the rest of us over. The millenials are going to see about a fundraiser, but i told them to wait until I contacted the government agency and squirrel had time to try working the facebook angle. (I don't facebook. I've avoided it for excellent reasons. Me trying to learn it now makes a lot less sense then them doing it as they do facebook and follow the complex chatter.)
I'm not posting the whole explanation and likely fundraiser until I've a better idea of how those two avenues pan out and squirrel can guestimate his resourses properly.
I literally didn't find out about the Boomers' move on the rest of us until Thursday night. I still needed to do my share of gas if we wanted to get home. The money I'd already spent on things like extra food on the trip was spent. I have an essential car appointment I scheduled for the 2nd I can't postpone as they estimate the car will be dead by November if they can't find out what is leaking and I keep driving it. I have a thing that must be mailed early October that iI can't not mail. After essential bills including housing I have about a hundred left in a normal month. I need a certain amount of gas for things like physio appointments and inevitably there are things EBT doesn't cover like TP. Which you know, eats that leftover bit.
I just don't have much room for penny pinching is what I'm saying, and I don't think the grad students and the fixed income people are any better off than I am.
I am furious and I can't see the math working out. Laundry switches in about ten minutes, so I'm posting this.

I Got Your Back - Part 3
WARNING: Violence and blood in this chapter, along with light implied sexual humor.
Part 3
Block pulled up a holographic screen to display the information as he relayed it to Cavendish and Dakota. “The Triton’s Amulet was a priceless jeweled necklace created by a master jeweler and given to the daughter of a family who was feuding with the jeweler’s family. The feud between the families was full-on bloodshed. I’m talking Montague vs. Capulet level, at each other’s throats at all times. The Triton’s Amulet was a peace offering, a symbol of the friendship between the jeweler and the daughter. It was passed down through the generations until it was donated to a museum, where it was stolen by this man: Tyler Cobalt. Cobalt sells the Triton’s Amulet to a black-market dealer, who later dismantles the necklace and sells the parts for profit. That, gentlemen, is what you are going to prevent.”
“So, we are to prevent the theft of the amulet?” Cavendish guessed.
“Oddly enough, no.” Block said. “See, the Triton’s Amulet being stolen prompts the museum to create better security measures, which later prevents worse thefts from happening. You two are going to tail Cobalt until he steals the amulet, and then you’re going to take the amulet from him before he can sell it.”
“Thieving the thief. I like it.” Dakota chuckled.
“Stay sharp, Chuckles.” Block snapped. “You two won’t have a big window of opportunity. Cobalt steals the amulet late at night and then hops on a plane early the next morning to take the amulet to the black market. Based on our research, Cobalt actually gets killed by the buyer once he gets to the black market; but, ideally, you two dunderheads will retrieve the amulet and Cobalt will be apprehended by the police of his era. Be quick, be careful, and be sneaky.”
Dakota caught the backpack Block tossed to him. Cavendish accepted the paperwork with all their mission information. “We will not let you down, sir.”
“Well, you haven’t so far.” Block shrugged. “But I’m not getting my hopes up. Now get out of here!”
A short while later, the Second-Class Time Travelers were in their time vehicle and speeding off into the time stream.
Dakota fiddled with his seat to get comfortable. “When are we getting our own vehicle? I’m tired of this stupid van.”
“It’s a standard time vehicle for in-training and rookie agents.” Cavendish reasoned. “I’m sure we’ll get a new one once we complete this mission. Besides, it’s not that bad. It’s actually one of the newer models, if I’m not mistaken.”
“Yeah, but the seats could use new stuffing.” Dakota complained.
“If you don’t like it, why don’t you go lay on that mattress you insisted on putting in the back?” Cavendish jerked a thumb behind him. Indeed, the backseats were folded down and there was a twin-size mattress taking up half of the empty space behind them.
“That’s my napping mattress when our missions take too long.” Dakota protested. “If I lay on it now, I’ll fall asleep.”
“I never took you for the type to care.” Cavendish sighed.
“Eh, go boil your head.” Dakota snickered.
“You’re ridiculous.” Cavendish muttered under his breath.
Thankfully, they arrived in the right time and place soon enough. The darkness of the night setting contrasted greatly with the bright colors of the time stream they just exited. Dakota took out the mission file and punched a location into the GPS. Cavendish followed the directions to the museum while Dakota rummaged around in the backpack Block gave them.
“Typical supplies. Rather boring weapons.” Dakota took out two hand pistols, designed appropriately for their current era. Generally, time travelers only used weapons that matched whatever time period they were in, just in case that weapon were to get lost or taken by someone else in that era. Plus, fewer people would ask questions.
“I hope we do not need to use them.” Cavendish was a decent shot, but he despised guns. They had no elegance, no beauty in them. Not to mention it was far too easy for someone to be killed by one.
Dakota hummed in thought. He looked and sounded more focused than Cavendish had seen before. Dakota didn’t like that Block gave them guns. Not because he hated guns, per se, but because he worried about having to use them. Time travelers weren’t supposed to cause deaths in the past unless absolutely necessary.
Cavendish parked the van around the corner from the museum. He and Dakota exited the vehicle and walked up the stairs to the front door of the magnificent building. Dakota pretended to check the hours while covertly investigating the dark interior.
“According to the files, this building’s alarm system only goes off if someone tries to break and enter.” Cavendish said as they walked down the steps.
“But Cobalt gets away and the theft isn’t even discovered until morning.” Dakota remembered that from the file. “How does he get in without tripping the alarm?” He looked ahead and froze, cursing in Italian. Cavendish followed his gaze and saw their target. Cobalt walked towards them, his hands stuffed in his pockets and a cigarette pinched between his lips. He looked inconspicuous, like a barman walking home from a late-night shift.
“Act casual.” Cavendish whispered.
“Does that mean we kiss?” Dakota teased.
Cavendish bit his lip to keep from exploding in indignation and frustration. How can he be joking around at a time like this?! Cavendish wondered. Dakota sniggered again, and the pair kept walking. Cobalt passed them without a second glance.
Smart. Dakota mused. Act like you don’t exist, like you belong where you are now, and most people glance over you. He pulled Cavendish into the next alley they passed, and they watched Cobalt continue down the sidewalk. Once he started climbing the stairs to the museum, Cavendish and Dakota tiptoed closer and hid behind one of the statues out front. They watched in amazement as Cobalt pulled a key from his pocket, unlocked the door to the museum, and strutted inside like he owned the place.
“Clever.” Cavendish tapped his lip in thought as they returned to their van. “Either he stole the key from one of the employees or he found a way to copy it himself.”
“Now we know how he avoided detection until morning.” Dakota said. They sat in their van, moving it only just enough to see the front doors of the museum. “What do you say we jump him when he gets back? Take the amulet, arrest him, and get back home for lunch?”
“Not likely.” Cavendish said. “Did you not see the bulge in his jacket?”
“Was I supposed to see it? What if it’s inappropriate?” Dakota shrugged.
Cavendish face-palmed. Curse his partner’s crude humor. “I’m saying he very clearly had a gun in his pocket. Best if we wait until he comes out. Then, we will follow him home and steal back the Triton’s Amulet while he sleeps. Less chance of us getting shot.”
Dakota checked the time. “Depending on when he gets back and how long it takes to drive there, that only gives us a few hours before his flight in the morning.”
“We can manage.” Cavendish assured.
The confidence in his partner’s voice put Dakota’s mind at ease. They waited, watching the doors until they spotted Cobalt leaving. Cobalt returned to his own car and drove off, with Cavendish and Dakota safely following him. Cobalt left the brightly lit streets and arrived at a dinghy strip of townhouses. Cavendish parked the van in a dark alleyway. Dakota slung their backpack of gear over his shoulder. Cavendish glanced to his satchel in the backseat, and he decided it would be best if he only had his firearm with him. He and Dakota trailed Cobalt’s car to find which building he lived in. Cavendish and Dakota ducked behind some bushes and watched Cobalt park and enter a house. The lights inside came on, and then flipped off fifteen minutes later.
“He’ll probably sleep for a while before his flight.” Dakota guessed. “Let’s get that amulet.”
“Wait a moment. Give him time to really fall asleep.” Cavendish whispered. “If he locked it in a safe, we need time to hack into it.”
“You can crack a safe?” Dakota looked impressed.
“You don’t know everything about me.” Cavendish shrugged with a rather proud smile.
“I hardly know anything about you.” Dakota said. “We really ought to fix that. What’s your favorite food?”
“You really want to do this now?” Cavendish hissed. “What if someone hears us?”
“It’s just past midnight and all the other houses are dark. Relax.” Dakota scoffed.
“I will relax when the mission is complete.” Cavendish declared.
“And then we can talk more? Get to know each other better?” Dakota suggested.
Cavendish opened his mouth to retort, but conflicting words tangled his tongue. Part of him wanted to scoff and assure Dakota that such a thing wasn’t necessary. Another part of him pleaded to say yes. So Cavendish cleared his throat and returned his attention to the house. Despite his mild fear of the dark, he was happy the shadows could mask his discomfort. Why did he find the idea of hanging out with Dakota enjoyable? What was so appealing about the thought that he and this brutish young man could be friends?
Once they agreed it was safe, Cavendish and Dakota snuck up to Cobalt’s house. Dakota picked the lock to the front door, and they crept into the dark house. Dakota handed Cavendish one of the pistols from his backpack. Cavendish gestured for Dakota to go up the stairs, and Dakota nodded to confirm. The pair split off to search the two-level house.
Even in the near-blackness, Cavendish could register the layout of the connected kitchen and living room area. The first word that came to mind was “pathetic.” From the outdated appliances in the kitchen to the weathered easy chair and cheap TV in the living room, Cavendish deduced that Cobalt was a broke loner, which explained why he would steal for profit. If it were different circumstances, Cavendish would entertain the idea of counseling Cobalt instead of leading him to the police. However, Cobalt’s file outlined a history of drug abuse and distribution to high schoolers, so Cavendish felt little pity for the man destined to be arrested that night.
Must focus. Cavendish reminded himself. The sooner Dakota and I find that amulet, the sooner we get out of here.
As Dakota ventured upstairs, Morgan’s lessons echoed in his head. Never step in the middle of the stairs, where creaks are more likely to happen. Keep low to the ground to delay enemy detection. Be aware of everything around you. Listen; do not hear but listen. Dakota felt a tingle go up his spine. He hated silence. He hated the apprehension that came with sneaking around. Any moment now, he might get caught. He wished Cavendish were at his back.
Upstairs, there were three doors, two of which were closed. Snoring came from one door. By reaching into the open door, Dakota could feel a countertop and porcelain sink for a bathroom. Dakota moved deliberately, closer and closer to the closed doors. Since they neighbored each other, Dakota couldn’t tell where the snores came from. After a quick eeny-meeny-miny-moe, Dakota twisted the knob of one door and pushed it open, ever so slowly.
He nearly cursed in Italian again.
Dakota chose the door to the office space, but Cobalt evidently decided to sleep in his rickety office chair before his early flight. Dakota almost shut the door when a glitter caught his eye.
Figures. Dakota silently groaned. The Triton’s Amulet lay on the desk next to Cobalt. Dakota’s mind raced. What would Morgan do? What should he do? What might Cobalt do if Dakota’s plan failed? Dakota had a thought to awaken Cobalt and arrest him, but Block did make it explicitly clear that Cobalt’s fate should rest in the hands of the authorities in this time period. Dakota didn’t much care for the rules. Still, he had no idea if Cobalt had a weapon on him. Better to grab the amulet and get out.
Quietly, Dakota slipped the backpack off his shoulders and set it aside, just in case he had to make a run for it. With his gun trained on Cobalt’s sleeping form, Dakota took the slowest, most silent steps he could manage. He forced his breathing under control to stay quiet. His eyes flickered fast, focusing on Cobalt for a split second and then spending the next half-second staring at the desk so he would not bump into it. Cavendish was still downstairs.
It only took a minute that felt like an hour to reach the desk. Still, Dakota kept his gun pointed at Cobalt. His fingertips gripped the edges of the trident-shaped, jeweled pendent. Dakota lifted the amulet from the desk and slipped it and the chain into his jacket pocket. Dakota moved back to the door, his nerves settling.
He reached the door, and a light cast his shadow against the wall.
Dakota spun around, safety flicked off on his gun, but the brightness of Cobalt’s flashlight blinded him. Cobalt pushed the gun aside and body-slammed Dakota into the wall. He smashed the door against Dakota’s hand and forced him to drop the gun. Dakota shoved Cobalt back and punched him. The flashlight hit Dakota’s face, and he tasted blood. He aimed low and tackled Cobalt like a linebacker, sending them to the ground where they grappled for control. The erratic movement of the light disoriented them. Cobalt may have been similar in build, but he was fueled by desperation, and a desperate man was hard to fight until you found just the right moment to subdue him.
In the poorly lit space, Dakota didn’t see the office chair and tripped over it while trying to escape. The chair landed on top of him, and then so did Cobalt. The flashlight’s beam hit Dakota’s eyes again. The top of the chair’s backrest pressed against his throat, and Cobalt pushed his entire body weight on the chair to keep Dakota pinned.
“Thought you could swipe my prize, huh?” Cobalt sounded as crazy as he looked. “I got someone willing to pay a fortune for that thing, and you are going to pay big time for screwing with me.”
With the chair pressing against his legs, Dakota didn’t have the proper leverage to push or kick it off him. He struggled with all his might, clawing at the poor-quality leather upholstery. He couldn’t get a breath in. His thoughts ran a mile a minute. Where was his gun? Where was Cavendish? What would happen to him if Cobalt realized there was a second intruder in the house?
Dakota fought to stay alive. The room was getting darker. Was the flashlight going out?
“No!”
Cavendish may be lanky in figure, but his full body weight and force of the blow was strong enough to knock Cobalt off Dakota and send both men tumbling across the floor. Dakota coughed harshly, pushing the chair off him. He could just make out Cavendish and Cobalt exchanging punches. Cobalt kept one hand on Cavendish’s gun to keep it away from him. He punched the time traveler in the eye, breaking his glasses. Driven by adrenaline, Cavendish punched back harder. Cobalt managed to get one good hit into Cavendish’s stomach that knocked the wind from him.
Then, Cavendish felt something hard jab him in his ribs. Just before he realized what it was, a gunshot went off, and burning pain coursed through his torso. In shock, Cavendish hit the ground while holding his side. Cobalt had his gun, aimed right at him. Cavendish flinched, preparing himself for another shot that would hopefully kill him immediately.
“Hey!”
Cobalt turned his attention and gun to Dakota. Five shots left Dakota’s gun in quick succession: one hit Cobalt in the forehead, two hit his chest, one hit the wall, and one grazed Cobalt’s shoulder. Cobalt was dead before he hit the floor. Dakota didn’t need to check for a pulse to know that, but he still kicked the gun from the criminal’s hand before he ran to his partner’s side.

“Fantum maskz! Git ya’ Fantum maskz! Fer da low, low price a’ all da teef in ya gob, you’ze can look jus’ like Warboss Fantum! Jus’ way, way runtier,” a greenskin merchant bellowed, his calls largely drowned out by the countless other merchants jostling to sell their own wares. The Buhzarr, as the Operorks referred to their main marketplace, was extremely busy today, as well it should have been. The Fantum, warboss of the Operork clan and leader of the growing WAAAAGH! Bignoyz, had finally announced that the WAAAAGH! was ready to take off in search of a “Roight gud foight” and new war stories to sing about. As such, the merchants of the highly organized – by Ork standards, at least – primary warclan were capitalizing on the excitement. Lots of excitement meant lots of loose teef, and lots of loose teef meant lots of greenskins looking to spend said teef.
One greenskin in particular watched the clamoring mob with a smile of amusement from on top of a flimsy “apartment” complex, chewing on some dried meat held in her one good hand. La’al had spent an entire year trapped on this planet, and she had adapted fairly well once things had… well, things involving Orks never really calmed down, but they mellowed slightly. Having painted her limbs and skin green, even with her “roight Orky” helmet she still shouldn’t have passed well as a greenskin. She was much shorter and more slender than proper Orks, while also being much taller and well-built than the gretchin populace of The Stayj – the name the greenskins had given to the planet during their stay. But apparently being able to best most Orks who gave her trouble through hand-to-hand combat was all the bhe’ghaal needed to accept “Lildeff” as one of their own.
It had not been a particularly easy year of her life, as the number of new scars crisscrossing her biological components could clearly show, but she was doing much better than she had ever expected she could. Finishing off her meal, she clamped the jaws/visor of her helmet shut again and dropped down a few stories, walking along atop the various merchant awnings a few yards above the densely packed streets of the Buhzarr. Whenever one of the Orks below noticed Lildeff’s unique silhouette and made a gesture or call up to her, she would respond in kind, either waving the new, much more well-made blade she had recently welded to her left arm or replying in Ork tongues, either true Orkish or their human dialect. If she had been Por’faan the bhe’ghaal’s relative camaraderie would likely have made her entire life worthwhile. She had somehow managed to live alongside the antithesis of the Tau’va. And all it had really taken was some strategic displays of force, and occasionally proving that said displays were more than luck.
After a few hours of relatively aimless wandering, occasionally knocking the teef out of a particularly rowdy greenskin to trade for her regular supplies, the prices of which had been dramatically marked up with how many teef were flowing lately, she found herself at the edge of town opposite where she had made her “home,” more a very heavily booby-trapped cave just beyond the outskirts of the shanty-city, and looked upon the fleet, an odd sense of awe in her at the sight. There were more than fifty Mega-Gargants of various size and design parked out in the badlands – and towering above all of them was the Perish Operork Fort, the Fantum’s personal command center. Even to La’al’s T’au sensibilities it was utterly breathtaking. The Perish was so unbelievable in its scale that even the spires of the Imperator titan whose deployment on Dal’yth she had seen recordings of would have barely reached mid-chest on it.
She had never heard of a bhe’ghaal force so well organized or armed as this WAAAAGH! and she took immense pity on the people who would soon face their wrath. She had done what she could to sabotage the construction of many of the Gargants, but with the way Ork technology functioned, the lone Fire warrior held little faith that her makeshift explosives and strategic cutting and acid bathing would do more than slow them down, enough to allow evacuations with a bit of luck. Despite that, she had worked hard to make sure many of the lesser war machines, like the Kans and Dreads, would crash in spectacular fashion within just a few engine activations, and many Mekz, Painboyz, and Nobz among their numbers had met their end along the edge of her blade, glinting in the dark of night.
Wandering out onto the depot field where the fleet was parked up, she gave the titanic machines another looking over, testing and weakening external mechanisms covertly as she went.
“Oi, Lildeff! Ya bring me anyfin’ ta nosh on?” came a shout from several yards up one of the machines, the “Fist uv Maybee Mork,” if memory served. Looking up, La’al rolled her eyes at the severed purple head yelling at her.
“When wuz da last time A’ brought ya’ anyfin’, ya’ daft git? Ya’ dinnae even ‘av a stomach,” she responded, her own accent still not quite gone behind the Ork one she put on.
“’Oo needz a gut ta’ nosh on stuff?” Nashtoof retorted, swinging himself about on the chain dangling his head from the Gargant.
Shaking her head with a chuckle, La’al jumped up to the spot he was hanging from, finding a relaxed position on one of the many “small” guns jutting out of the machine.
“Pretty much any’un not an Operork, Nash,” the “greenskin” said, pulling some jerky out of her bag and impaling it on one of the head’s tusk-like lower canines. Her words were quite true though. La’al herself had decapitated Nashtoof an entire year prior. However, the “kultur” of the Operorks was extensively intertwined with their ability to sing. As such, the clan held zealously to the belief that their heads had literally no need for their body other than to get properly stuck into fights. Admittedly that was fairly important for Orks in general, but Operorks could be a part of the fight without ever needing to swing a blade or pull a trigger. Their songs alone could, as La’al had seen with her own two eyes, whip their brethren into an astonishing bloodlust, make their machinery work with nearly unparalleled efficiency, or even shake the very foundations of mountains.
“Lookin’ for’ard ta’ getting’ off world, finally?” the T’au asked as Nashtoof worked the piece of meat off of his tooth with his tongue.
“Zog yeh!” he responded before finally getting a grip of the food. “Bin way too long wiffowt a gud scrap!” His chewing on the jerky didn’t even muffle his voice, a concept La’al found even stranger than the fact he was speaking without a body. The line of what is possible had to be drawn somewhere, right?
“I’ze gotta say, doh. I get dis odd feelin’ dat we’ze gonna be in for a bigun soonah den latah,” said the bhe’ghaal, an odd darkness and calm coming over him, fully opposite of how any normal Ork would say those words.
“Whyz’at?” La’al asked, looking down at the head with mild confusion and surprise at the tone of his voice.
“Dunno. Jus’… jus’ a feelin’. Sky’ze getting’ dark, doh. Probubly time fer ya’ ta’ leave, den’. All da’ best scraps iz gonna be goin’ on bakk in town,” the hesitant tone and sudden shift of subject put La’al very much on edge. Even so, she nodded and hopped down from the titanic machine.
“Yeah. Prob’ly time. Dinnae wanna miss da’ gooduns. See ya’ round, Nash,” she said, walking back toward town and the sounds of its clamor. She had adjustments to make to the stellar radio she had been cobbling together in her cave over the last year before its first test that night, after all. But still, something was scratching at the back of her head in regards to what Nashtoof had said, and not just the bhe’ghaal’s tone of voice. It was something she couldn’t quite put her finger on. Until, like a sun cresting the horizon, it dawned on her.
Snapping around, she looked up at the system’s star, still high in the sky and as yet untouched by the growing storm-clouds. Yet it was growing darker and darker by the moment. Then, the sky began to roar with the sounds of countless fighter craft and dropships falling through the atmosphere.
La’al saw red. Not for the fighters, not for the dropships, not in their Guard colors. No, what drew the fury from the darkest depths of her heart was the drop pods, falling wave after wave into the badlands and sprawling shanty-towns around her. The drop pods. The jet-black drop pods. Marked with the jagged cross.  The Black Templars had brought their eternal crusade back across the Damocles Gulf. And from the Stayj, a bellowing cry of bloodlust and excitement rose to meet them.
(And so the climax approaches. I’ll admit, not totally sure about how well this particular part works out for someone who didn’t write the thing. Deeply sorry if parts of this story feel less than cohesive with one another. Don’t really have much of a commentary at the moment, but as always I’m open for any questions and critiques)
No need to apologize, and sorry I took this long to get back to you! The truth is just that I've had a rough spell and thus was quite inactive for a while, but thank you for still sending me this.
I do not have too much commentary on this one; I enjoy the closer look at Ork cultural cues and societal nuances, I have always enjoyed those, so seeing something of a market at the outset, for example, was something I enjoyed greatly!

Halloween 2019: CasDeanSam
Fluff. Random little SPN fan fic. Location: The Bunker (again). Just really love that set. ***If they lose that place in Season 15, I’ll cry for weeks. It would be like when Mxxxxx’s office was set on fire in the X-xxxxs****
SAM: Seriously, Dean. NO! Sam has his feet propped up on the table. Dean has a Red Hood mask on, and a pillow case in his hand (and a knife up his sleeve, and a gun in his left pant leg, just in case). I can’t believe he really thinks we’re going to pass for high school students, trick or treating. It was like that episode of Friends where Joey thought he could audition for the role of a teenager.
DEAN: C’mon Man. Halloween!!! You promised, last year...
SAM: No, you told me/didn’t ask me about what I wanted, as far as celebrating tonight, and I kept saying the same thing over and over....NO!!! Sam has his lap top open. Trying to find a case that involved a real monster, not some drunk loser in a mask with a rubber knife. Dean keeps pressing, but Sam keeps shaking his head ‘No.’
There is a whiny, rusting, creaking noise from above (Gotta get that thing greased, Dean thinks to himself). Castiel enters the bunker. He’s covered in blood. Dean and Sam start.
SAM: Cas! What the hell happened!? Are you okay?!
DEAN: Did you get the beer? Both Sam and Castiel look at Dean in exasperation. Castiel makes his way downstairs and Sam immediately goes to him, reaching out a hand to help support him, not knowing how badly Castiel’s hurt. Dean of course, keeping his distance, unsure. Castiel touches Sam’s arm lightly and goes to the table. He pulls out a chair and plops down.
CASTIEL: No, Dean. I didn’t. I got side-tracked....by zombies. Again. Though, I really think from a technical standpoint, they ought to be called...
DEAN: Yeah, whatever. So, are you alright? (There’s genuine concern in his voice now). He and Sam sit down again, figuring there was nothing that they could really do for Cas when he was beat down, like this. His vessel would re-charge and clean itself off, overnight. You’re a mess.
CASTIEL: Thank you Dean. He closes his eyes. It was closer to home, this time. Even with the wardings, I worry about...
DEAN: Whatever, we’ve been over this. Sam’s rigged it so that no one gets near the place without us knowing. Castiel looks up at Dean, confused.
CASTIEL: Forgive me for doubting either of you, but you both seemed surprised by my appearance when I entered, just now. Like you weren’t expecting me. Is it even working the way it should? How was I able to enter the bunker without either of you being alerted? I’m not as powerful as I used to be, but wouldn’t an angel raise some sort of alarm?
DEAN: That’s different. Your face is scanned into the system, or some crap like that. You can exit and enter whenever you want, like Sam and Me. Sam tries clearing his throat. Castiel turns to look at him, now.
CASTIEL: My face is scanned in? Sam blushes.
SAM: Uh, yeah. So, you know how there have been multiple attacks on the bunker by demons, lately? Castiel leans back in his seat and folds his arms. Well, er...we decided that it might be better if we acted like the warding doesn’t even exist, since it keeps failing on us randomly. Cas tilts his head. So, we set up a security system where those who want access...
DEAN: We scanned your face after you got blasted on that ghost hunt last week. You know, after you had passed out. By the way (to Sam) I can’t believe you managed to shoot Cas, again..The ghost you were aiming for was miles away from him.Sam glares at his brother. Cas sits up
CASTIEL: What?! Why didn't you just ask me?
SAM: We wanted to....I wanted to. But you know you still have an aversion to certain electronic devices. It was easier just to...
CASTIEL: Sam! Seriously? I thought you and I were agreed that....
Castiel is cut off by a flash of red lights, and the sound of an alarm going off. The back-up lights turn on and the screens light up, on the security monitors. Sam opens up his lap top again, and clicks on an icon that’s blinking. It opens up to show the front entrance of the bunker, from the outside. There are three darkly cloaked objects, with distorted faces approaching the door. One appears to be holding a staff, of sorts.
DEAN: What is it?
SAM: I don’t know. They almost look like those things we wiped out in Michigan, last month. He reaches under the table, un-latches one of the spare guns, and moves towards the stairs. Castiel wields his angel blade and Dean slips his demon knife out of his sleeve, like Cas taught him to. The three move up the stairs quickly. They brace themselves, look at each other knowingly and Dean opens the door.
DEAN: Freeze Freaks!...Wha.. Three painted children’s faces look up at him calmly. They’re wearing Walgreen’s-bought costumes and all dressed like Darth Maul. One has a staff and a pumpkin trick-or-treat basket. The other two have giant pillow cases.
Kid #1: Hey Cool! You’re the Red Hood! Awesome! And you’re Constantine! And you’re...(considering Sam) the Brawny Man! But you’re wearing the wrong color. He wears a RED plaid shirt, not blue! Sam hurries to put his gun behind his back.
SAM: Um, what? He and Castiel look at each other.
Kids: Trick or Treat! They hold out their basket and bags, eagerly. Dean shakes his head.
DEAN: Nope, er um. He-he...Uh, We don’t exactly have...
CASTIEL: Wait here, please. He quickly disappears down the stairs and into the kitchen. The kids lower their arms and look just as confused as Dean and Sam. Dean lowers the knife and tries to hide it.
Kid #2: Hey! Why don’t you keep your candy by the door, like all the other houses do? Sam runs a hand through his hair.
SAM: Well, actually...we weren’t participating with Halloween this year...In fact, I remember putting up a sign down the drive.. Castiel arrives back at the top of the stairs with a bag from the local market. Dean raises an eyebrow at him. The children beam when they see Castiel reach inside to pull out three full-size candy bars.
Kid # 3: WOW! The expensive stuff, too! They each accept a candy bar and say thank you, in unison. Dean stares at Cas with a little admiration, but also questioningly. Of the three of them to be prepared for this sort of scenario...Cas looks up at him, sadly. ‘Jack’ he mouths. Dean feels a pit rise up in his stomach. Oh. He remembered the kid had a thing for nougat. Castiel had never failed to keep the kitchen stocked for him. Sam continues to shake his head.
SAM: Hey, wait! The kids turn to look at him. They are half way up the stairs to the street level, so Sam has to step outside. I know I put up a sign saying we weren’t giving out candy. Why did you come to our door? One kid looks surprised.
Kid #1: The decorations.
SAM: What decorations?
Kid #3: The DECORATIONS. Halloween stuff in your yard. We thought the sign was fake, like the bodies up there. He points to the railing. Dean, Sam, and Cas follow the kids up the stairs to see what they’re talking about. When Sam and Dean see the “decorations”, they pale. About ten zombie corpses lie scattered all over the grass and dirt road, decapitated, their heads separated from their bodies. The moon reflecting off of the splattered blood, gave the impression of light up decorations, or glitter. One kid walks over to one of the heads and picks it up...
Kid #2: You have a LOOOOOTTT of these things. Can we keep one!? I want to hang it up in my bedroom...
SAM: Hey! Get away from that thing!!!
Kid #1: Ohhhh! I get it! That sign was the TRICK part, wasn’t it? Glad we came anyway.  Dean furrows his brows and then it’s his turn to look exasperated. He faces Castiel, waiting for it...
CASTIEL: Do you remember when I said that the fight happened closer to home, this time? Well, I should have specified...
DEAN: I got it, Cas! He’s a little frustrated, but then sees that Castiel is still holding the bag full of candy bars, and he melts. Sighing, Dean pulls Cas in for a hug. For the first time, Cas doesn’t stiffen, doesn’t hesitate...he’s been through too much. Losing Jack had left him more vulnerable than Dean has ever seen him. Cas drops the bag and wraps both arms around Dean’s waist, closing his eyes. Dean kisses the top of Castiel’s head.
They both look up and smile sadly, watching Sam chase the kid with the zombie head clutched in his hand. The kids think that Sam is just joking around with them, and are laughing with glee. A couple of adults standing next to the impala parked outside (the children’s parents) laugh too, and take out their phones to film their kids and the Brawny man. One looks at his watch and calls out to his son..
Parent: Jack! That’s not yours. Give it back so we can head to the next house!
The smile fades from Castiel’s face. The tears falling down his cheeks gleam like silver, with the light of the moon. Dean takes Cas by the shoulders and turns back towards the bunker, keeping an arm around Cas as they descend the stairs to the front door. Castiel sighs heavily and leans against Dean, for support. Dean kisses his temple.
DEAN: Happy Halloween, Castiel.

Thy Neighbor (Chapter 4)
[Chapter 1] [Chapter 2] [Chapter 3]
Trevante Rhodes x Y’lan Noel fanfiction. Message me if you would like to get added to the tag list.
A few content warnings for this chapter: War, domestic violence, PTSD.
“Baby, baby, listen, list-, she’s only my neighbor. I promise you…”
Trevante knew how to save face. And how to fix his face. The food smells delicious and Trevante couldn’t wait to dive in.
“Tre, listen. I’m tired of you and all these girls. Either we’re doing this or wer---,” Trevante knew how to cut off a conversation too. He peppered his date with kisses, bringing her back tot their prior moments together. She quickly forgot what she was mad about.
Trevante gently grabs his escapade’s chin. “You know you’re my favorite. Believe that. I’ll see you Friday night, right? Right?”
“Grr. Yes.”
He lightly taps his date on the butt as she walks out of his apartment. Quickly grabbing a fork for his food, he plops on the couch and turns on Sportscenter, sounding approval for his food with every bite.
That girl can cook. Damn.
His mood quickly changes when Baseball Tonight comes on. Suddenly he’s not hungry anymore. He grabs the remote with velocity, turning off the cable and turning on his gaming system. As he loads up Mortal Kombat X, he tried to zone out without thinking about his Dad. A slight tear starts to form in his left eye as he looks for his controller. He shakes his head to readjust his heart, accidently looking at the screensaver on his phone. It’s a picture of him and his Dad at a Texas Rangers baseball game.
Baseball was Trevante’s Dad’s favorite sport, having played it in college and some years in the minor leagues. When his baseball dreams looked deferred, he joined the Army. Trevante was born after his father enlisted, having a baby with his college sweetheart. When Tre was little, he and his father would play catch in the backyard, learning how  to swing like Ken Griffey Jr. Tre wanted to play center field like his father -- and Ken Griffey -- and did. He racked up awards in middle school until his father went to serve in Iraq.
Those years were tough for Trevante. His love of baseball changed for football and he built himself into a freight train. Hours in the gym allowed for him to escape the idea that his father may not come home, the only thing holding him on was the “I got you…” his Dad would write in letters.
His Dad would be surprised -- but proud -- of  how built Trevante would become. They worked out together in the mornings, Tre being his Dad’s spotter. But he started to notice that his Dad would have a short temper and would go into fits of paranoia when Trevante would drop a weight on the concrete floor. Some nights, Tre would find his father staring at the window at all hours of the night, watching the empty street, bristling when a random car would drive by their home.
Although Tre couldn’t understand it, he knew to protect his mother as she couldn’t understand what was happening to her husband. He feared leaving his mother and sister to go off to college on a football scholarship. He didn’t quite know what was about to happen. But he knew something was wrong with his Dad and that the war probably had something to do with it.
Things quieted down as soon as Trevante left for college in Oklahoma. He was the starting linebacker for his team, racking up Division III awards and recognition. He also fell in love with marketing, excelling in school. Things were on a roll for Trevante until he received a harrowing phone call from his younger sister.
“Mom’s gone, Tre.”
Trevante’s mom died from a heart attack. As he rushed home to be with his Dad and sister, he noticed that his Dad was nowhere to be found.
“Yo, Tricia. Where’s Dad?”
“I don’t know. I-”
“What you mean you don’t know? He just left…?”
“Something like that…”
His sister’s words made no sense. As Trevante walked into the bedroom, he noticed that the drawers were full and that his father’s car was parked behind the house. Trevante’s sister wept as she spoke.
“Dad’s locked up, Tre.”
“What?”
“Mom ain’t want to-. Tre, please!” Trevante stands there bewildered. Tears forming rapidly, breath falling short. He wants to fall but he can’t. Somehow he could hear a voice telling him to stand tall.
“Tre. Dad’s in jail for drugs. He got hooked to pain meds, Tre. And he got upset because Mom wouldn’t give him any money and he shot up her car. Mom ain’t want to tell you because she knew you’d leave school.”
“I can’t believe this shit. I’m out…”
“Tre. Tre!”
With speed not seen, Tre drives away from the house. As he is about to hit the exit back to the freeway, a phone call from his sister slows him down.
“Tre, how you going to leave me alone?! I didn’t lie to you! Why are you blaming me!” Through screams and tears, Tricia implores Trevante to come back. He couldn’t bear to leave his sister alone.
“You’re calling Dad to let him know that Mom died. I’m not doing it.”
Years passed as Trevante refused to talk to his father. Even as his sister told him that his father was doing better and staying clean, he couldn’t work up the heart and soul to reach out. He felt guilt for leaving school for football. He felt guilt for allowing his Dad to hurt his Mom. He couldn’t understand how PTSD caused his father to cope with opiods. He couldn’t understand that while his father was locked up, his mother would still visit him. She knew that wasn’t her husband. And his apologies through the glass were sincere.
As Tre’s thoughts taper off to the good and bad times with his father, his phone pings from a text. It wasn’t track body. It was the assistant manager from the gym. She was racially ambiguous and built to win a triathlon. As she gave him a tour of the facility, she could feel the energy between them. She slipped him her number on his way out of the gym and the rest was history, giving him free personal training sessions and waving any late fees. But that came with something and Tre didn’t hesitate to deliver on it.
Hey, favorite. I haven’t seen you in the gym. You didn’t forget about me, right?
No. Had a funeral. Was out of town.
I’m sorry, love. Make you feel better?
Although Trevante was lowkey offended by her offer, he remembered that she didn’t know about his Dad. He also didn’t want an empty bed. Having a warm body in his bed felt good on nights when he felt alone. And she would have been just that.
Yeah. I’ll hit you later.
Okay, love. 😻😻😻
Trevante only knew one thing since college, the one thing that his fraternity brothers held dear: GWG: Gym. Work. Girls. Trevante was an early riser, hitting the gym at 5 AM, working out for two hours before work. His spent his work days as a marketing executive for small businesses and nonprofits, flexing his muscle at marketing launches and young Black executive networking events.  Sadly, that’s where he would pick up his dates. Girls with dreams of Black power couples looked at Trevante as the ultimate catch. His face, body, complexion and confidence said enough.
His apartment was impressive too. Black and cobalt furniture, leather couches, sleek art. Posters of athletes. His kitchen was devoid of pots and pans but full of every meal prep service in the city. His favorite picture hung in his living room: A framed photo of Ken Griffey Jr, signed by the man himself. He kept memorabilia from college around his space, his fraternity regalia on a special stand near the entryway. A vintage record player sat in front of a window, his collection of jazz and 70’s R&B vinyl displayed around that case.
His bedroom was as bare as it could be. His king size bed took up most of the space, leaving him enough room for a speaker system to blast his favorite music. His black comforter, sheets and pillowcases were all he needed. He hid the small stuffed animal lion his sister gave him when his dates came around.
Trevante only carried workout clothes and suits. He only had one pair a jeans and few collared shirts for when he’d go out. He was simple yet striking. And always single.
Even through college, Trevante never kept a girlfriend for longer than four months. He never could grow attached, afraid to commit to even his own thoughts of a relationship. But he was also afraid that people would be afraid of his story: a kid with a father in jail and a mother dead of a broken heart. He kept his feelings close to his chest, never crying to anyone except himself. He was too tough to cry, too imposing to look soft. He didn’t cry at his mother’s funeral even though he wanted to. When he got into his car after the repass, he lost it. He vowed to never lose it like that again.
Until he did that day when Ciara came to his rescue.
Trevante always wondered who Ciara was. He’d watched her walk from her car into her apartment, slightly intrigued by her walk and her large bag. He would often notice that she carried in a bag from Hamilton Ave. Books, her University of Pennsylvania  sweatshirt seemed like a security blanket. On Sundays mornings, he’d always hear her door close at 8:45 AM, signaling her travels to church. It used to wake him up, signaling that his late night special needed to leave.
If work was stressful, he’d head into the gym after work. He would always notice her on the treadmill, trying her best to keep up with her high intensity interval training. Cardio wasn’t his favorite, so he never stayed for long. And hardly paid attention to anybody in the gym after that.
He always wanted to be cordial with her, at least, given the fact that she was his next door neighbor. He once wanted to knock on her door just to say hi but couldn’t. Even in Tre’s confidence, he had moments of shyness. And nerdiness too.
Tre loved books. Philosophy, fiction, true crime. That’s why Ciara’s bookshelf fascinated him. And made him feel that he was right at home.
He realized as he packed his things to head down to his father’s funeral that he never opened up to a woman like that before. She was the first person that he told about his regrets about his father. And she just listened, never telling him that he was wrong to feel the way that he felt. That openness was something that eluded him too. But he didn’t know how to communicate his thanks to her. He felt like a knock on her door wasn’t enough.
He never sent flowers to a date. So that felt appropriate.
As he throws down his phone and picks up his controller, his eyes catch that poster of Ken Griffey Jr. Trying to fight the tears, Trevante tosses his controller on the floor and precedes to weep uncontrollably. The cries become louder as Tre punches the coffee table, breaking it into pieces.
Trevante tries his best to pull himself together, grabs his keys and heads over the gym. Ciara hears his door slam.
