Scientists have developed a new solar-powered system to convert saltwater into fresh drinking water which they say could help reduce dangerous the risk of waterborne diseases like cholera.
Via tests in rural communities, they showed that the process is more than 20% cheaper than traditional methods and can be deployed in rural locations around the globe.
Building on existing processes that convert saline groundwater to freshwater, the researchers from King’s College London, in collaboration with MIT and the Helmholtz Institute for Renewable Energy Systems, created a new system that produced consistent levels of water using solar power, and reported it in a paper published recently in Nature Water.
It works through a process called electrodialysis which separates the salt using a set of specialized membranes that channel salt ions into a stream of brine, leaving the water fresh and drinkable. By flexibly adjusting the voltage and the rate at which salt water flowed through the system, the researchers developed a system that adjusts to variable sunshine while not compromising on the amount of fresh drinking water produced.
Using data first gathered in the village of Chelleru near Hyderabad in India, and then recreating these conditions of the village in New Mexico, the team successfully converted up to 10 cubic meters, or several bathtubs worth of fresh drinking water. This was enough for 3,000 people a day with the process continuing to run regardless of variable solar power caused by cloud coverage and rain.
[Note: Not sure what metric they're using to calculate daily water needs here. Presumably this is drinking water only.]
Dr. Wei He from the Department of Engineering at King’s College London believes the new technology could bring massive benefits to rural communities, not only increasing the supply of drinking water but also bringing health benefits.
“By offering a cheap, eco-friendly alternative that can be operated off the grid, our technology enables communities to tap into alternative water sources (such as deep aquifers or saline water) to address water scarcity and contamination in traditional water supplies,” said He.
“This technology can expand water sources available to communities beyond traditional ones and by providing water from uncontaminated saline sources, may help combat water scarcity or unexpected emergencies when conventional water supplies are disrupted, for example like the recent cholera outbreaks in Zambia.”
In the global rural population, 1.6 billion people face water scarcity, many of whom are reliant on stressed reserves of groundwater lying beneath the Earth’s surface.
However, worldwide 56% of groundwater is saline and unsuitable for consumption. This issue is particularly prevalent in India, where 60% of the land harbors undrinkable saline water. Consequently, there is a pressing need for efficient desalination methods to create fresh drinking water cheaply, and at scale.
Traditional desalination technology has relied either on costly batteries in off-grid systems or a grid system to supply the energy necessary to remove salt from the water. In developing countries’ rural areas, however, grid infrastructure can be unreliable and is largely reliant on fossil fuels...
“By removing the need for a grid system entirely and cutting reliance on battery tech by 92%, our system can provide reliable access to safe drinking water, entirely emission-free, onsite, and at a discount of roughly 22% to the people who need it compared to traditional methods,” He said.
The system also has the potential to be used outside of developing areas, particularly in agriculture where climate change is leading to unstable reserves of fresh water for irrigation.
The team plans to scale up the availability of the technology across India through collaboration with local partners. Beyond this, a team from MIT also plans to create a start-up to commercialize and fund the technology.
“While the US and UK have more stable, diversified grids than most countries, they still rely on fossil fuels. By removing fossil fuels from the equation for energy-hungry sectors like agriculture, we can help accelerate the transition to Net Zero,” He said.

How Many Solar Batteries Do You Need? Factors to Consider
Tumblr media
Factors to Consider Before Installing Solar Panels
1. Understand Your Energy Consumption
Before you begin, take a look at the energy use of your home on a daily basis. Check utility bills to calculate the average daily consumption in kilowatt hours (kWh).
A common U.S. household uses about 30 kWh each day.
If you own a residence solar panel and solar batteries, they will have enough power to last to be used at night, on cloudy days, or for emergencies.
2. Assess Your Solar System’s Output
Your residential solar panel output is a major factor in determining the battery needs.
Solar panels have to produce enough power to meet the immediate energy demands while also charging the batteries.
Example of a solar panel: If you produce 5 kWh a day but your home only consumes 10 kWh, you'll require batteries for the additional 5 kWh you'll need.
3. Determine Your Energy Goals
The purpose you have for installing solar panels will impact your battery's strategy
Grid-Tied System The less compact energy storage device for solar batteries might be enough, since grid power is available during periods of outages or peak hours.
Off-Grid Solar Installation The larger battery banks are required to provide electricity during long periods of cloudy weather or during winter.
Partially Backup If you are powering only important appliances, a smaller configuration will meet your requirements without a lot of expense.
4. Consider Battery Capacity and Types
Battery capacity is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh) that represent the energy they are able to store.
Lithium Ion Batteries They are more durable, efficient and have a longer life span, even though they cost more initially.
Lead Acid Batteries They are cheaper initially, but less efficient, and with a shorter life span.
For instance:
If your house consumes 20 kWh a day and you require two days of backup for your home, you'll need a forty kWh battery.
5. Climate and Location Matter
Your location has a significant impact on the efficiency of the solar panels you have installed in your residence solar panels:
Sunny Areas: You will need a smaller battery configuration as panels produce more energy.
Less Sunny Areas Need more storage to compensate for decreased solar output during cloudy conditions.
6. Budget Considerations
The price associated with the price of a Solar battery system for storage differs:
A single lithium-ion battery can cost approximately $5,000-$7,000 not including installation.
The balance between storage capacity and budgetary constraints will ensure that you can get energy independence without spending too much.
7. Consult Solar Experts
Consulting an established solar system installation company guarantees a streamlined system that meets your specific needs. Experts will analyze your energy use along with your location, goals, and energy consumption to recommend the ideal configuration of battery and solar panel.
Conclusion
The number of solar cells needed is contingent on the energy consumption of your home and solar panel output and energy independence goals and your budget. If you're connected with grid power or are planning the installation of an independent solar system, a properly-planned home solar system will increase your energy efficiency while reducing dependence on traditional energy sources.
For ensuring that your system is built for maximum efficiency, talk to an expert Solar service company. With the right advice you can design an energy-efficient system that will benefit you for many years to the future.

How To Use Solar Inverter Without Battery?
Tumblr media
As going solar is a trend, many people are starting to pay attention to solar inverter. In the type of grid connection, solar inverter can be divided into off-grid inverter and on-grid inverter. How to use solar inverter without battery?
Off-grid inverters are usually used with batteries to store electricity and convert the DC provided by the batteries into AC, and can be worked as a backup power when there is no sunlight at night or in cloudy days. If the batteries are not connected, they cannot be used for electricity storage and can only be used when there is sunlight. We usually recommend to use off-grid inverters with batteries.
On-grid inverters are usually used in on-grid solar systems, and the on-grid solar system mainly consist of two components: pv array and on-grid inverter. When there is sunshine, the electricity from the pv array is transmitted to the grid through the inverter. When there is not enough sunshine, electricity can be transmitted from the grid for energy supply and can be used without batteries. Not all off-grid inverters support use without batteries. However, for our ZRS off-grid solar inverter, it can be with or without battery configuration. When not configured with batteries, solar energy micro-grid system is formed, and it uses PV energy as priority. It can automatically turn on and supply electricity to the loads with solar power supply, which is suitable for users’ need that do not require energy storage. If you are interested in our ZRS off-grid solar inverter, please feel free to contact! Xindun always pursue the reliability, efficiency and economy of the products.
