well I sorta fused them? tldr: i made a (mostly) Adult Confidant AU for ARR! Details below, if you're interested - and if you have any questions about it, please ask @rollthedice-playthecards or this blog here!

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR ARR! CANON-STANDARD TRIGGER WARNINGS!

The Fool and Strength (i.e. Igor & Caroline/Justine/Lavenza) are the same. Otherwise, everyone's changed.

The World (i.e. Protagonist) is Tae Takemi!

Her parents were abusive shitheads to her, and she got into a program that helped her escape for Tokyo.

Her first Persona is Merit-Ptah, a fictitious woman purported to be a chief physician of an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh and thus one of the oldest known women in medicine and science.

The Magician is Sadamu Niijima (transmasc!Sae)!

The home invasion that killed Mr. Niijima also led to his death, but Igor came upon his soul and reincarnated him into a hound (because of Shadow Sae's tattoos) for The Yaldabaoth Game™.

His first Persona is Turiddu, a Sicilian bandit whose gang was "legally held responsible" for a massacre, although the entirely of their role in it is disputed.

The Priestess is Sadayo Kawakami!

She was a member of Student Council, but when she brought up Kamoshida's abuse to Principal Omon "Bael" Kobayakawa, she lost her seat. Kobayakawa actually replaces Kaneshiro as the third major target.

Her first Persona is Elissa, legendary founder and queen of Carthage... oh, and I will be shipping her with Tae for my Kawakemi agenda. :)

The Empress is Chihaya Fukurai (Mifune)!

Yuichi "Mammon" Fukurai, her adoptive father, runs Fukurai Foods (Big Bang Burger's owner and more). Chihaya was setting up to inherit the business when Yuichi "changed his mind" and prepared to sell her off in an arranged marriage to Rikio Sugimura.

Her first Persona is Lakshmibai, an Indian rani who rebelled against the Bri'ish.

The Emperor is Sojiro Sakura!

He's a culinary prodigy studying under his adoptive parent (I haven't decided who yet, but they're Azazel) - a TV chef who runs a kids' competition a la Chopped Junior. They definitely abuse some of those kids.

His Initial Persona is Hamlet, the famous Shakespearean Prince of Denmark.

The Hierophant is Makoto Niijima, owner of Cafe Bianca.

She's been looking for her estranged younger "sister" for years now.

The Lovers is Munehisa Iwai!

Munehisa is Shujin’s star athlete. Excels in every sport in Shujin except volleyball, from which he was banned after standing up to Suguru "Asmodeus" Kamoshida.

Kaoru, his younger brother here, takes the role of Shiho, and Akimitsu Tsuda and Masa replace Nakaoka and Takeishi.

His Initial Persona is Barrow, a Great Depression-era criminal who robbed small stores, funeral homes and banks with his partner Ms. Parker.

The Chariot is Ichiko Ohya!

Leader of the photography club. She caught photos of Kamoshida’s dirty deeds in the past and is trying to find a way to expose them anonymously. Oh, and she has a long-distance girlfriend named Kayo.

Her Initial Persona is O'Malley, an Irish pirate queen so violent Elizabeth I considered sending the Royal Fleet after.

Justice is Toranosuke Yoshida!

I sort of split Goro's two roles in this AU. Toranosuke plays the Detective Prince trying to solve the case of mental shutdowns (+ the Phantom Thief case), but his brother-by-choice Benzo Kuramoto plays assassin and mental-shutdown-inducer for Masao Kuramoto, his grandfather. Tora joins the team in Oda's Palace, and they fight Benzo in Kuramoto's Palace - that's where Toranosuke achieves his Second Persona.

Speaking of Personas, his Initial one is Greenlefe, Robin Hood's second-in-command and the only one present at his death.

The Hermit is Takuto Niijima (Maruki)!

Makoto had a brief stint as a police officer, but after a influential asshole (Kuramoto) drove drunk and killed one Tomoyo Rumi, she attempted to dig into the situation and was dishonorably discharged. Soon after, she met Rumi's boyfriend, Takuto (an orphan with one shitty relative), and took him in.

He would be a third-year if he was still in school. He’s wasting away as he grieves Rumi's death. He can’t bring himself to kill himself, but he also doesn't want to be alive anymore.

His Initial Persona is Popol Vuh, a religious text of the mythology and history of the Kʼicheʼ Guatemalans.

The Fortune is Hifumi Hibino (Togo)!

After Mitsuyo disowned Hifumi for coming out as lesbian, Hifumi moved in with her wife Haru (they both end up with Makoto later). Hifumi took up busking/street shogi, not wanting to be reliant on Haru.

The Hanged Man is Akira Kurusu!

Not much for this guy right now - like Canon!Munehisa, he's an ex-yakuza who runs Indomptable, an airsoft store. Ren is his adoptive son.

Death is Sumire Yoshizawa!

A medical misdiagnosis (by her biological mother Yui, not that she knows it) left Sumire's sister in a coma. Ever since, Sumire can't see anyone unconscious without thinking of Kasumi.

Temperance is Ryuji Sakamoto!

An orphaned man who teaches PE at Shujin and moonlights in an escort service to take care of himself and his son Morgana.

Just after his college years, his mom's ex-husband killed her and then killed himself to escape the police, so he has no support system. Thus, he got himself into trouble with a duo of loan sharks so he could look presentable enough to replace Kamoshida.

He, Ann and Shiho were friends in high-school, but he never saw them again after graduating.

The Devil is Ann Takamaki!

An up-and-coming actress working hard to make it big. She's keeping her sexuality (and her girlfriends Shiho Suzui and Mika Abe) under wraps from everyone, including her manager.

At the end of the Confidant, she moves in with her old friend (and future boyfriend) Ryuji after Tae mentions him.

The Tower is Goro Shido (Akechi)!

Goro is a very temperamental young man with no methods of healthily and safely letting out his anger at the world and his shitty, abusive father.

After Shido's heart is changed, Ryuji (and Ann and Shiho) take Goro in.

The Star is Zenkichi Hasegawa!

Even if Zen doesn't know it, he's the best player in the shogi club at Kosei. It's discovered their "team" has been fixing matches, and Zenkichi is determined to find out who's cheating.

Jyun Owada, his senpai and club president, is jealous, and is trying to cause strife between him and his girlfriend Aoi to weaken him.

The Moon is Sophia Ichinose!

Sophia is a Greek immigrant who moved to Japan for work opportunities. She's Tae's science teacher, so Tae really likes her. Her daughter Kuon, however, has fallen in with a HORRIBLY nasty crowd - a bigoted group who hates (among other groups of people) Kuon's adoptive mother. Kuon, naturally, is conflicted, and this leads to conflict between her and Sophia.

The Sun is Haru Hibino!

A young politician whose bold eat-the-wealthy mentality does not sit well with older generations - for example, her father Kunikazu, who disowned her and silently smeared her campaigns so she'd waste her inheritance and never expose his criminality.

In the end of the whole story, Haru legalizes polyamorous marriage!

Judgement is Shinya Oda!

Uses they/them pronouns here.

After Shinya's mother Hanae was killed in cold blood, they joined the SIU to find the killer. She did something to piss off Kuramoto, though, so he and the director do everything they can to keep Shinya away from that.

The Faith is Wakaba Isshiki!

Daughter of Shujin's new counselor. A science prodigy.

I don't have much ideas for her yet, never mind her Personas.

The Councillor is Futaba Isshiki!

Shujin's aforementioned new counselor in the wake of Kamoshida's arrest. Believing the world to be "without life" without her deceased fiancee Kana, her Palace becomes a Graveyard, where she "raises the dead" by fixing their problems.

She only has one Persona - Chac Chel, an important Maya goddess of many things, most prominently both creation and destruction.

The Hope is Yuuki (Mishima)!

His ranged weapon is eye lasers. They use both he/him and they/them.

An A.I. made by Katsuo Akiyama, a regretful high-school bully who caused one of his victims to commit suicide.

Their first Persona is Thyrsus - a giant fennel staff that Yuuki uses like a weapon alongside the Persona aspect of it.

The Apostle is Yusuke Kitagawa!

The only original Phantom Thief to keep the power of Persona.

Ordered by Madarame Ichitaro (the killer of his mother and Police Commissioner) to investigate the Phantom Thieves after a series of mass heart-changings occur again.

Akane has a brother, Natsuhiko, and they share the Jail. Their mother, Takayo (Yusuke's beard) is still dead.

His Persona is Enjolras, and he later gets with Akira.

Lastly, a unique Arcana - The Actor, Morgana Sakamoto!

A theater prodigy at his school (not Shujin or Kosei) and Ryuji's son. He has no clues to his past before Ryuji, and he wants to know, but he also wants his dad to be happy. At the end of the Strikers arc, Lavenza becomes human, and he and Goro get the Sakamotos to adopt her as well.

World Akira wakes up some nights to these angry blonde children who tell him the world is ending but he's special?? Also someone about the moon but they're fighting and yelling and he's tired

I've changed my mind on something. Akane Hasegawa isn't Justice, she's Hanged Man. Wondering why her dad doesn't spend time with her and shit. Why he isn't trying harder to avenge her mom

That leaves an open spot on the team. A young character, who fights, and maybe is good with a gun? My new idea is SEES member Shinya Oda. I think this would work better than Akane in any sense

I haven't chosen a distinct role for Hifumi yet. Maybe Fortune? Instead of Art Club it's Board Games club and it's chess and shogi?

Now let's talk more about our SEES members

Member 0, the Empress Arcana, Makoto Niijima. She's been able to summon her persona since the big accident, the one that put her guardian, her older sister, into a coma. Makoto visits Sae at the hospital a lot, and she's lived in the Iwatodai dorms ever since. She was alone there for a long time, until members 1 and 2 joined her, when they all started middle school

Makoto appears put together to the younger members. She's got her sick ass motorcycle persona, and guides them through Tartarus at the start. Under her help even Ryuji does okay on his exams

But, it's mostly a ruse. She's trying to live "normally" to ensure she has a future but, part of her believes there won't be a future. She's stubborn in her escapism, and it's what led to a falling out between her and member 2. She's still a scared little girl deep down. Luckily, she's got a bond stronger than blood with member 1, though they don't show it around their Juniors. They remain focused on the fight, and seek the other for comfort and physical distraction afterwards

Member 1, the Star Arcana, Haru Okumura. She lost her mother young, due to her father's high status, in some, incident she doesn't talk about much. Even Makoto barely knows about it, and they're as close as can be, soul mates practically. Haru was involved, was there, and her father doesn't talk to or visit her much since she's come to the dorms

Haru needs to be strong, so those around her are safe. When first starting out, Makoto and member 2 had to take hits for her, and she'd cry after, while learning to tend their wounds from Sojiro or Takuto. Now, she's turned that old fear into a drive to slash and hack through every shadow, so her "family" is always safe

When she breaks her rib during that April Full Moon, she's so pissed she's sidelined. She spends the downtime picking through colleges with Makoto, softly talking about their next year. Haru does it for Makoto's sake. When she's high on pain meds in the hospital, she texts Member 2 for the first time in two years. They start meeting up, and Haru tries to convince 2 to come back

Member 2, the Moon Arcana, Ken Amada. He used to smile more, the girls say. Before. He's always been a quiet soul, Sojiro claims. He was the realist, the mature one of the three, always focused on the truth; the world will end, and only they can stop it

That's what his fight with Makoto was about. The middle of their second year, after they've been friends for 6 or so years, he punches her. His grades were low, he was skipping school to train, and she accused him of throwing away his life for the cause. He thinks planning for the future is stupid, when they might not have one. He didn't mean to hit her. She didn't mean to give him that ultimatum.

Ken misses the girls so much. He's got no one else but them. When he comes back, he's putting on a lighter attitude. Joking around with Makoto and Haru, after agreeing with Haru to at least pick a college with them. They're closer to being kids during that time then they ever were, now that the burden is shared a little. But Ken, he still knows there's little chance in their dreams coming true

Q: When will this game be available to download?

A: At this stage, there is no set release in sight. The project is being worked on as a learning experience for me and my own interest in making video games between work, other projects, and other obligations.

Time frames will be updated as I re-assess the amount of work the game needs, but for now we’ll call it TBA.

Shinya Oda and Morgana will not be a characters you can romance. I will not reconsider this.

Q: What name will the game use for the Protagonist?

The player will be allowed to name themselves whatever they want with the restriction of 8 characters a piece for the given and surname. There will be an auto-fill feature with the names Akira Kurusu and Ren Amamiya available when you are naming the player character, for those who would prefer it. Any other names used in official material will be added to this list in the future through updates.

That being said, pre-alpha and alpha builds will probably use one of the filler names for convenience’s sake, but it won’t be permanent.

Q: Can I contribute art/help/et cetera to the project?

A: I appreciate all offers of help, but I want to get out of pre-alpha before I consider creating a team to help with art and such.

I'll make a post in the future if I ever put out a call for help/portfolios. I don't currently have the means to pay anyone for the time, and don't want to put anyone through potentially scraped work or deadlines before I have a solid basis.

It's most likely, though, that I'll ask some friends for help over strangers. We'll see.

For now, please look forward to future builds. The feedback I get from these public play tests helps immensely.

Q: Will I have to pay to play this game?

A: Absolutely not. This game will be totally free and will be available to anyone who can run it on their computer. At this point we can playtest on PC and Mac, so those are my goals for release.

This has been sitting in my inbox since March 1st of last year ANYWAY

Councillor - Sadayo Kawakami. Shujin High's student counselor. Takes her job very seriously and hopes to lead students to their dreams.

Hierophant - Munehisa Iwai. Futaba’s ward and Ryuji’s adoptive father. Owner of A.C.D. Diner, and a damn good chef with a gruff exterior.

Strength - Elizabeth + Theodore. The twin velvet room attendants. Elizabeth is energetic and unpredictable, whereas Theo is calm and soft-spoken.

Wheel of Fortune - Tae Takemi. A crystal healer who operates in Shinjuku. Secretly knows what she's doing is a scam but needs money.

Hanged Man - Ichiko Ohya. Manager and Co-Owner of Untouchable. A weapons enthusiast who has yakuza connections. Secretly has a son named Kaoru.

Death - Takuto Maruki. Futaba’s therapist. A kind soul with a rough exterior and a dark past. He specializes in newer methods for his practice, much to his peer's chagrin.

Temperance - Toranosuke Yoshida. Futaba’s homeroom teacher. Moonlights as a butler-for-hire to make end's meet. He used to work at a different school but had to leave due to a scandal.

Devil - Sojiro Sakura. A sardonic journalist who frequents a cafe in Shinjuku. He's currently investigating the disappearance of his friend and coworker, Asami Magario.

Tower - Hifumi Togo. A live-streamer from Shujin High. Known for her skills in shooters, and has recently been spending a lot of time at an arcade.

Star - Chihaya Mifune. A shrine maiden who plays Shogi at the Meiji Shrine. She secretly enters tournaments and has gained a rival in Yuichi Fukurai.

Moon - Shinya Oda. The young head moderator of the Phan-Site. He has as a sarcastic disposition that gets on the nerves of his mother and classmates.

Sun - Yuki Mishima. Former Student Council VP of Kosei. Got involved in an bullying incident and was removed, but plans on running again next year.

Judgment - Kasumi Yoshizawa. Sumire's older sister and legal guardian. Formerly a top gymnast but suffered a debilitating injury, and is now a public prosecutor.

Friday after school, Ren decided to stop by the arcade in Akihabara to check in on Shinya. As she entered, she heard him cursing up a storm even more aggressively than usual. She approached him cautiously. “Um, Shinya?”

“WHAT?!” Shinya snapped, turning around. Once he saw that it was Ren, he settled down somewhat. “Oh, it’s you. Sorry…”

“Eh heh,” Ren laughed nervously. “Are you…feeling alright?”

Shinya was hesitant to answer. “...I’m just a little hungry.”

“Oh,” Ren said, surprised by the banality of the answer. “Well, why don’t we get something to eat? My treat.”

Shinya looked hopeful. “Really?” Ren nodded. “Sweet! Thanks!” The two of them decided to head out.

Ren decided to take him to the diner on Central Street. She knew Sojiro had stuff that would satisfy his palette, but the diner had more choices, and it wasn’t as far out from the arcade as Leblanc was. They place their orders. “Hey,” Shnya said. Ren looked at him “Thanks again.”

“Hm hm. No problem,” Ren said.

Shinya looked a little disappointed. “I…wouldn’t usually be this hungry. But in the ongoing war at school, some of the other kids put eraser crumbs into my food so I couldn’t eat that much.”

Ren was surprised. “That…sounds rough.”

“It’s not that bad,” Shinya said. “That’s them going easy.”

“So, this ‘war’...what else happens in it?” Ren wondered.

“Eh, don’t worry about it,” Shinya said. “It’s nothing I can’t handle.”

“Hah…eh…hm…” Ren mumbled.

“Really, it’s fine,” Shinya said.

“You say that,” Ren said, “but it sounds like they’re bullying you.”

“You don’t know what’s going on,” Shinya protested.

“I do,” Ren responded. “I…was bullied a lot too, you know.”

Shinya was surprised. “Really?” Ren nodded. “Hmmmm.”

“Do you need help?” Ren asked.

Shinya pondered the question. “I…just need to get stronger. Like The Phantom Thieves.”

“Huh,” Ren said, unsure of how to respond.

“My mom says that we need to be strong, since no one else will be strong for us,” Shinya said.

“What about your dad?” Ren asked.

“He left my mom,” Shinya said. “That’s why she says no one will be strong for us. I’ve heard a lot of other moms saying mean things about her. And their kids, my classmates, say the same things.”

“Gotcha,” Ren said, understanding.

“They don’t understand,” Shinya said. “And when I try to explain it to them, they just ignore me. Or worse. That’s why I can’t afford to lose the war.”

“Hmmmm,” Ren pondered. She was familiar with Shinya’s situation, but not with all the details. She was hesitant to intervene, worried that failure during the intervention would only make things worse. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t do anything. “Well, whenever the war gets to be too much, you know you can always message me, and we’ll play some Gun About, or go out to eat again, or something.”

Shinya was excited. “Really?!” Ren nodded. “Ha! Thanks. That… Thanks.”

Their food arrived. “Well then, let’s dig in,” Shinya proposed. The two of them began eating. After the meal, Ren guided Shinya back to Akihabara. “I’ve got it from here. But thanks again Ren!”

“My pleasure,” she replied.

“Well, seeya later!” Shinya said, running off. Ren waved back.

Later that evening, Ren decided to stop by the Church in Kanda. She wanted to check in with Hifumi to see how she was doing. Unfortunately, she got her answer in the worst way possible. She noticed an imposing woman talking to Hifumi. “...Mother, we’re in a church.”

“Well, if you’d just listen to me, we wouldn’t be having this issue,” Hifumi’s mom said.

“Mother…” Hifumi moaned again.

Ren decided to intervene. “Um, hi,” Ren said. Both of them looked at her. “Hifumi asked if we could hang out tonight. But…”

Hifumi’s mom looked at Ren and smiled. “Hifumi, is she a friend of yours?”

“Yes?” Hifumi answered.

“Well, why didn’t you tell me you had such a cute friend,” Hifumi’s mom. “You should bring her along. I think the photographers would like you and her together.”

“Mother!” Hifumi protested, as Ren’s face went pale and pink at the same time. “She doesn’t need that kind of attention.”

“Please, anyone would kill for that kind of attention,” Hifumi’s mom said.

“I…disagree…” Hifumi said, nervously.

“WHAT?!” Hifumi’s mom shouted. “Do you even know what you’re saying?! I’m your mother! I know what’s best, and how to make things work!” She huffed. “We can continue this conversation when you get home later. I don’t want to keep you and your friend waiting.” She rushed out of the church.

Ren sat down next to Hifumi. “I’m…sorry you had to see all that…” Hifumi apologized.

“It’s…fine…” Ren said. “Honestly, being called ‘model material’ isn’t the worst thing that’s happened to me.” Hifumi was still a little upset. “I take it that was your mom.” Hifumi nodded. “And she still wants you to model more and stuff?”

“Well…” Hifumi explained, “if it was just that, it’d be one thing. But she’s gone off the deep end!”

Ren was surprised. “That doesn’t sound good.”

“It’s terrible!” Hifumi continued. “She actually wants me to THROW my next match. She says it’ll be good for my image. Can you believe it?!”

“Yikes,” Ren said.

“My father can’t even talk her out of it either. She ignores him completely when it comes to his opinion,” Hifumi sighed. “I hate having to do this, but I think we need to fall back on what we discussed in Hawaii. She is actively trying to destroy everything I love and forcing me into everything I hate.”

Ren got her phone out. “Just say the word, and her name is up on the Phansite.”

Hifumi looked intently at Ren. “Mitsuyo Togo.”

Ren put the name up. “And done!”

Hifumi smiled. “Thanks.” She frowned again. “I really didn’t want to have to do this, but if I hesitated like this in Shogi, I’d lose 1,000 times over. And I don’t want to lose like that in life.”

“I get it,” Ren said. “It can be hard to go against the ones you care for.”

“Are you going through something too?” Hifumi said.

“Well, kind of,” Ren said. “It’s not quite what you’re going through, but…” she sighed. “I…don’t want to go back to my hometown. I love it too much here. I can’t go back at this point. But I don’t know how to tell my parents.”

Hifumi placed her hand on Ren’s. “You’ve helped me this much, now allow me to help you. Whatever you need to do, do it! I’ve waited too long to do something about my mother, and it only got worse as time went on. You need to just go for it the first chance you get.!”

Ren smiled. “Thanks.”

major plot changes

on principle, the Espy Division do not steal hearts. they fight the shadows to metaphorically break through to ppl and go from there. Futaba and Sumire do not steal their own hearts, for example. they go to therapy

Akechi does not awaken when he is 15. he continues to get passed around between foster homes until he lands the internship at the prosecution's office at 17 and immediately moves out to his own apartment

Akechi's very grand plan to take Shido down this time is to gain so much fame and credibility that ppl will actually listen to him when he publicly accuses Shido of all of his crimes. he does this by using the Metaverse to solve cases fast, which naturally makes Makoto suspicious of him

Shido and Sae's palaces are discovered early but not explored until around the time they are in canon. instead Futaba's palace is done first, then Sumire's, then the canon palaces are done in order

Sumire does not become Kasumi! her parents try to send her to therapy but she's so utterly convinced that she doesn't deserve it that she completely avoids Maruki and develops a palace instead (the palace of Acedia; forms as an arena in scramble crossing)

the canon palaces are done but for different reasons (Kaneshiro's is done as the conclusion to a long series of cases Akechi and Makoto were looking into since Dec; Okumura's is done bc Haru insists that they do it; Sae's is done bc she outright threatens to take Akechi and Makoto into custody if they don't turn themselves in)

Joker joins them for Sae's palace. they're all fully aware he's the leader of the enemy team but they reluctantly need his assistance to get past one of the cognitive doors

Joker's confidants (minus the Espy Division members/Shinya/Lavenza/Sae) are still happening in the bg so that's. so very fun for Sojiro when interrogation room comes around

Yaldabaoth declares Joker as the winner immediately after Shido confesses and claims his “prize” by possessing him to terrorize Tokyo. yes this is how I incorporate satanael into the plot

Maruki's reality still comes to pass, but everyone's wishes are appropriately updated. Akechi is not the only person in his apartment. Sumire's not the only sister alive. Joker... Nothing Bad Happens at all to him :)
