Listen to me, boy. You will hear about sea slugs. You will enjoy sea slugs
Tumblr media
Costasiella kuroshimae / leaf sheep. Discovered off the coast of Japanese island Kuroshima in 1993, they can indirectly perform photosynthesis by absorbing chloroplasts from algae
Tumblr media
Cyerce nigricans. The cerata can be easily cast when disturbed. They can also swim by powerfully flapping said cerata when strongly stimulated. I think they look like butterfly wings!
Tumblr media
Jorunna parva / sea bunny. They are covered in papillae, which are fleshy protuberances used for sensory functions. It looks like fur!
Tumblr media
Glaucus atlanticus / blue glaucus. They are rarely seen, except during periods of on-shore winds which brings them and their prey into coastal waters. They are the most dangerous sea slug to handle, able to give humans a very painful and potentially dangerous sting
Tumblr media
Chromodoris lochi / loch's chromodoris. They are spongivores, and prefer being on the underside of overhangs on rocky reefs. Their distribution is widespread in the Indo-Pacific. Everyone I show sea slugs to seems to love this little guy
Tumblr media
Dirona albolineata / white-lined dirona. A translucent predator that often eats bryozoans and small snails. They generally reside on rocks and sometimes mud in the intertidal. Pretty little things, they remind me of shards of glass
Tumblr media
Phidiana hiltoni / Hilton's Aeolid. They are known for being quite aggressive, often biting and fighting other aeolids, which is so real of them. They always reminded me of lit matches
Tumblr media
Acanthodoris lutea / orange-peel doris. Its bright aposamatic colouration is a warning to predators of its distasteful toxicity. They also notably smell of sandalwood! You don't understand. I NEED to hold one
Tumblr media
Nembrotha kubaryana / dusky nembrotha. They use the toxins in their prey ascidians to defend themselves against predators. The toxins are stored in their tissues then released in a slimy defensive mucus when alarmed. Nembrotha kubaryana are well-known for their neon appearance
Tumblr media
Phyllodesmium poindimiei / Spun Of Light. It's primarily nocturnal and can cast its cerata for protection. Anyway, can we all agree that Spun Of Light is the most awesome name for a sea slug ever? I mean, look at it. That's a sea slug spun of light if I've ever seen one
Conclusion: sea slugs are the creatures ever

Chapter Eight: I Should've Tied the Imbeciles's Hands Behind Their Backs
Prev/Next
A/N: Actually kind of obsessed with this song... Anyone else???
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1.12k
Listen to: Keep your friends close
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You and Eurylochus just stared at each other as you processed his words.
“Hm,” you hummed.
Eurylochus’s heart was beating too fast. His palms were getting sweaty, as was the back of his neck.
“You’re forgiven,” you decided. “At least by me. That talk with Odysseus should be fun, eh? Oh, can you help me grab a bite to eat? I can’t reach that shelf where you put the clementines.”
Eurylochus almost got whiplash from trying to follow your train of thought. He blinked once, straightening. “Of course,” he said.
So you led him down to the storage room below deck, smiling way too wide than Polites was comfortable with, even though he knew clementines were your favorite fruit.
It was unlike him, he knew, but Polites was slumped behind the pole you and Eurylochus had been standing in front of. He’d heard the whole exchange.
He sank down to the wooden floorboards, overcome by the same foreign emotion he got whenever Eurylochus approached you.
“A little problem you have with her, don’t you?”
He looked up, but there was no one in sight. “Pardon?” He asked.
The voice tsked. It sounded like a woman’s voice. “Stop speaking aloud, Polites. You’re making yourself look like a fool by talking to nobody.”
Sorry, Polites thought.
“Now, as I was saying, your predicament with Y/N is so infuriating to watch! I just have to step in. You see, me and Hermes have a bet going. You just have to win!”
Aphrodite, Polites said. What do you want from me?
“Oh how exciting a love triangle is! You see, Hermes is Y/N’s mentor, blah, blah, blah. All that boring stuff.”
Boring? He demanded the voice in his head. Hermes being Y/N’s mentor is not- wait, what?
“As I said, boring. Anyway, we started a bet. Hermes bet that Eurylochus could steal Y/N’s heart before you, but I disagree. I believe you can win her over.”
Then you are foolish, Polites thought. She will never choose me over Eurylochus.
“Oh, yes she will,” Aphrodite said. “Because of this.”
There was a sudden cold feeling in his right hand, and he opened it in surprise. Sitting in his palm was a small vile, filled with a rosy pink liquid, the same color as your cheeks when you blushed. Polites blinked at the analogy.
He brought the bottle up to his eye and inspected it. He knew what it was.
My lady, Polites thought. Didn’t you make a bet with Hermes? I’m guessing that he’ll be furious if I cheat.
Polites could almost see Aphrodite shrug in his mind. “What does it matter? This potion will only make her focus on you more. Keep her thinking of Eurylochus as only a close friend.”
Do you promise?
Aphrodite giggled. “I promise.”
And then her presence in his mind vanished as if it had never been. Polites sighed and slipped the vile into his pocket, swearing that he would only use it if something major happened between you and Eurylochus.
You and Eurylochus were laughing as you made your way back on deck, but immediately stopped as you saw Odysseus’s feet hit the deck.
Eurylochus pushed his way through the crowd of men who had gathered around Odysseus, his hand grabbing your wrist gently and tugging you after him.
“Captain, what’s happening?” Eurylochus asked. “What’s trapped in that bag?”
You looked down at said bag in surprise; you hadn’t noticed at first.
“Something dangerous friends, we mustn’t lag,” Odysseus replied grimly, gesturing for the crew to get the ship ready.
“It’s treasure!” A couple of voices said. You frowned. You’d never heard anybody with that high pitched voice. Even Little Ajax was never that squeaky.
You took a step forward as the rest of the crew chanted, “open the bag! Let’s see what you got.”
“No, do not!” You cried, stepping in front of Odysseus in unison with Polites, smacking away a hand that was reaching for the bag.
Odysseus gave both of you a grateful look before running his hand through his hair. “Everybody listen closely,” the captain ordered. “See how this bag is closed? That’s how it’s supposed to be.” He held the bag up for everyone to see. “This bag has the storm inside. We cannot let the treasure rumor fly.”
“We’ll try,” you, Polites, and Eurylochus said, nodding.
But it wasn’t easy. It was all you could do to keep the rest of the crew at bay, and they were getting more and more confident, trying to find their way around you or Polites or Eurylochus and steal the bag.
Until one day they succeeded.
It had been nine days, and Odysseus had reassured you that he could watch over the bag himself until you got back from grabbing a snack.
So you were just grabbing an apple from a cupboard when you heard a voice sounding startlingly like Odysseus calling, “no.”
You ran up the steps two at a time despite the pain in your injured leg. The apple you had grabbed you now carried in your jaws as you burst onto the deck. Surely they couldn’t have-?
“Keep your friends close and your enemies closer!” A feminine voice sang gleefully.
There. Two men were crouched over the bag- the open bag. From it, fierce winds that could only belong to the storm you had encountered nine days ago.
“Storm,” the men cried and your first thought was, and who do you think caused it, imbeciles?
“Where’s the storm taking us?” You heard Odysseus demand, and you tried to see the captain through the heavy rain.
“I said to keep the bag closed, but you weren’t compliant.” Now you could see it; a vague form of a woman in the clouds. Her mouth was moving. “If I had to guess, I’d say you’re headed to the Land of the Giants.”
“Help me close the bag!” Odysseus shouted, struggling to reach the sack through the winds.
You were already sliding toward the bag, deciding that it would be easier to not be thrown off the ship if you moved on your knees.
“But sir, it’s too late!” You heard Eurylochus say as you wrestled with the rope that was supposed to bind the bag closed.
“We can save whatever wind is left to use another day! Come on!” Odysseus yelled back.
Your two friends pinned the bag closed, and you finally untangled the rope, quickly tying in back around the container.
You stood, releasing a breath you hadn’t realized you were holding as you scanned your surroundings. Only open sea for as long as you could see.
“Y/N of Ithaca!”
Your eyes went as wide as saucers and you turned around.
“Do you know who I am?”

Round 1 - Phylum Annelida
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(sources - 1, 2, 3, 4)
Annelida is a large phylum, whose animals are sometimes called the “segmented worms.” This is a large phylum containing over 22,000 living species. Annelids are made up of multiple segments, each with the same set of organs (except for the oddball Echiurans). Instead of cilia, they use fleshy protrusions called parapodium for locomotion.
Annelida is a diverse phylum with animals that have adapted to many different environments, including terrestrial, freshwater, and marine habitats from tidal zones to hydrothermal vents. It includes the earthworms, leeches, ragworms, feather duster worms, and others.
Many marine polychaete worms live in tubes they build themselves or burrow in the sand to ambush prey or filter feed, but some spend their whole lives swimming in the water column.
Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut:
Earthworms are important in farming and in ecology as they help aerate and enrich the soil.
The largest annelid is the endangered Giant Gippsland Earthworm (Megascolides australis), which is on average 1 m (3.3 ft) long and 2 cm (0.79 in) wide. They can reach up to 3 metres (9.8 ft) long, and they can stretch to seem much longer or contract to seem shorter.
Like earthworms, marine polychaetes also aerate the sea floor, enabling water and oxygen to reach the other creatures that live with them.
Annelids help scientists monitor the quality of water, as different species have different tolerances for water quality.
Medicinal leeches are still used for blood-letting, though not as frequently as they once were. In fact, some species of leech are threatened due to overharvesting for this purpose!
Annelids don’t fossilize well due to their soft bodies, so most fossils are simply jaws or tubes. The earliest annelid fossil that can be confidentially identified is dated to the early Cambrian, and most of our modern polychaete groups appeared by the end of the Carboniferous.
Okay so you’d still love your partner if they were a worm, but would they be your favorite animal?

I'm beginning to realise that a major reason why I woke up in the middle of August and was like "I REALLY DESPERATELY URGENTLY FINALLY NEED TO DRIVE AROUND ICELAND FOR TWO WEEKS ON MY OWN" (apart from, you know, seeing Iceland) is that this will be the first time since Ireland that I will completely on my own schedule and on my own and off to clock and not available and it's really interesting that the people in my life who are the most like 'why would you want to go to Iceland on your own, there's nothing there, that sounds boring, it's empty and cold' are the ones I most need a break from. It's you, the stressor is you.

Chapter Seven: Eurylochus is Becoming a Menace to this Society
Prev/Next
A/N: I love this song!!! I was so happy to get to this chapter 😁
Warnings: None!
Word Count: 698
Listen to: Luck Runs Out
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You dared to open your eyes.
The storm was subsiding, which was good, you knew, but you couldn’t look at anything but the harpoon that had pierced the island in the sky. Your harpoon.
Odysseus wasn’t waiting though. He started strutting over to the rope dangling from the harpoon, but before he could reach out for it, Eurylochus blocked his path. “Please don’t tell me you’re about to do what I think you’ll do,” he told the captain.
“You’ve heard the legends of the island in the sky,” Odysseus said, putting a hand on Eurlochus’s shoulder and moving him to the side. “This proves they’re true.”
You limped up to the pair of schwabing friends. “We’re in the home of the wind god,” you breathed.
Eurylochus whipped his head toward you, but when his gaze met yours, his tone softened a bit. “We don’t know for sure.”
“How many floating islands have you seen before?” Odysseus asked. “This is the home of the wind god.”
He handed you the rope and you went to tie it around a pole, still listening to the conversation.
“And what’s your plan?” Eurylochus questioned.
“I’m gonna climb to the top and ask ‘em for a hand.”
You gave Odysseus a nod, signaling that the rope was secure, and almost immediately the captain started climbing up it.
Eurylochus reached out and pulled him down by his cloak. “You could be caught off guard and lose your life,” the second in command protested. “Or piss off this god and infuse us with strife.”
You walked back over to your two friends just as Eurylochus was saying, “don’t forget how dangerous the gods are.”
“Have faith, friend. We’ve come this far,” Odysseus pointed out.
“Yes, but how much longer ‘till your luck runs out? How much longer 'til the show goes south? How much longer 'till we all fall down? You rely on wit, and people die on it.” Eurylochus raised his hands in question.
You felt a presence over your shoulder and you heard Polites speak near your ear. “I still believe in goodness. I still believe that we could be kind. Lead from the heart, and see what starts.”
Eurylochus turned to Polites. “And what will we do when it tears us apart?” He asked.
Odysseus rested a hand on Eurylochus’s shoulder again. “Where is this coming from my friend?” The captain tilted his head as Eurylochus averted his gaze. “I just don’t wanna see a life end,” he replied.
“You’re like the siblings I could never do without.” Eurylochus gestured to all the three of you and you offered him a soft smile that only made him move his gaze away from you again.
“And suddenly you doubt that I could figure this out?” Odysseus demanded.
“Captain, how much longer 'till your luck runs out? How much longer 'til the show goes south? How much longer 'till we all fall down? You rely on wit, and people die on it,” Eurylochus said. You could see that some more crewmates were gathering to listen. Your eyes flashed with panic.
“How much longer 'till the snake breaks free? How much longer 'till your great days cease? How much longer 'till your strength takes leave?” Eurylochus asked, taking a step toward the captain.
You tried to grab his forearm to get him to stop, but he just shook you off and continued, “you rely on wit, and people die on it.”
You yanked on his wrist harshly to get his attention. “Eurylochus, stop,” you murmured. “This is going too far. The crew is watching.”
He looked around to see that you were right; more people were whispering to each other about the second in command’s words. He looked down at you and was surprised to see sheer panic and fear in your gaze. “Sorry,” he apologized to both you and Odysseus, while gently removing the tight grip your hand had on his forearm.
“We’ll discuss this later,” Odysseus said curtly. He was already clambering up the rope so fast, he looked like a monkey.
“I really am sorry.” Eurylochus leaned his neck down to your height. “I’ll make up to you however you want.”

Mer Elliott headcanon (also it's for mermay lmao)
Elliott sometimes helps Willy out with catching invasive sea urchin because they decimate entire reefs and kelp forests and populate like crazy. Though, he's a tad bit too squeamish to give it a taste.
