Yeah, the ending was bittersweet, I wasn't expecting a hopeful ending to the episode at all. The perspective of found family that seems to be developing in TADC is super interesting.
Gummigoo's existential crisis is limited by the fact that he's an NPC. His memories are programmed and emotional responses inferred by AI, yet it seems unfair that he should have to suffer knowing he's disposable by nature.
'Cause, like- since we as humans are empathetic creatures, we attribute emotions and feelings to non-sentient things- plushies being a good example. Gummigoo isn't Real, and perhaps that's why Pomni understands his struggles, as someone who doesn't feel Real herself. He deserves to feel Real to her, and she goes the whole nine yards as to befriend him, save him, and take him home, but...
he's still disposable.
And Pomni isn't.
There are people willing to catch Pomni when she falls, and Gummigoo doesn't have that luxury.
So in that sense there's an element of "who am I" and realizing "that doesn't matter, I'm Me and I'm Here". Gummigoo will always be a part of Pomni's heart whether or not he's conscious or even "alive", and the tragedy has led her to appreciate her circumstances more than she could before.
howdy Fives, any thoughts on gummigoo?? i audibly screamed "NO" when he burst into confetti akjajfahfhahf 😫
Oh I have thoughts.
I unfortunately spoiled myself about his fate, but I might have been able to see it coming anyway. I like how the show delves right into the deep stuff about living in a simulation, makes you ask if there really is any provable difference between the real characters and the NPCs. Caine doesn't really see a difference between the two, they're all actors to him, and he wouldn't be able to separate them if they were mixed in together.
I hope he comes back, but if he comes back, would he be reset or would he still have his memories? What makes up the actual core of a being in this world?
The most impactful part of the episode to me was the end where it subtly shows Pomni realizing that the others don't see her as disposable and that they genuinely care about one another.
