A Gintama episode a day keeps the ending away…Episode 142

Episode Title: Life Is A Series Of Choices

MY 23 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN EPISODE 142 (manga chaps 217, 218 and 219):

Love this episode so much! My favorite ep of the arc and the best one, imo. While Gintoki’s fight with Housen later is quite awesome and brutal, in terms of emotional resonance, I have to give the win to Kagura and Shinpachi’s two-on-one face-off against Abuto. The brutality of their fight never fails to make me clench my teeth so hard that my jaw is usually achy by the end of it. I love every second of it and I wish it lasted longer.

1) Bless this very human boy for trying to protect a powerful Yato girl from powerful Yato man.

2) This moment of Yorozuya-on-Yorozuya violence was especially sweet since they were fighting over their protection of each other. 

3) I love this family.

4) Tsukky being awesome and looking beautiful while doing it.

5) Such a heart-wrenching yet amazing image, and so meaningful too since Tsukky got the strength to stand up because she remembered Gintoki’s words of encouragement. 

6) I always get teary-eyed even though I technically disagree with the whole throwing away their womanhood thing. I think they’re still complete women through and through even with their scares and their past and their duty.

7) This fucking psycho rabbit. After watching V/H/S 2 and seeing that image of the bloody cult dude, I can never not think of that guy when I see this scene of Kamui now. Makes it that much more disturbing.

8) Those poor women. I appreciate the muting of the colors in that moment but it really doesn’t lessen the brutality of Kamui’s actions.

9) Abuto trying to bond with Kagura over her crazy brother’s abusive tendencies.

10)  You know it’s going to be an awesome fight when they go wide-screen at the start.

11) I think this is where my teeth clenching starts: you can totally tell that even though Kagura was putting all her strength into her swings and kicks, they were still barely doing anything to Abuto.

12) I love Kagura. I want to grow up to be like her.

13) I worship our Queen so much.

14) This and the noise and Kagura’s scream that resulted from it always makes me wince so hard that I actually get tears in my eyes. I could almost feel her pain from having her arm broken by Abuto. 

15) Again, bless this very human boy for even attempting something like that Would’ve been more effective if he aimed for Abuto’s head, but then that wouldn’t have been in character for him and that’s why Shinpachi is so lovable.

16) In retrospect, considering the damage Abuto was inflicting on these two people that I love, it’s really amazing that he actually managed to redeem himself completely by the end of the fight.

17) I feel a sympathy pain in my gut every time I see this scene. It’s nothing short of a miracle that Shinpachi’s internal organs were permanently damaged by what Abuto did to him.

18) The moment when Kagura’s chains start coming undone.

19) I clench down here too even though Abuto took the pulverization pretty well. Seriously how did he develop such a resilience to pain? I have to wonder just how abusive Kamui has been to him over the years.

20) Holy fuck. I mean, what else can I say?

21) And yet, I still hope we get to see this side of Kagura before it’s all over because she’s just so horrifyingly amazing in that condition. I mean, I hope she learns to control the bloodlust so she doesn’t lose herself completely, but I really want to see her going berserk again. Her and Kamui, going full berserker mode on Utsuro maybe. Omg that will be so freaking awesome!!!

22) Dear sweet Abuto. He’s so helpless to this nutty Yato fam.

23)  Last time someone tried to interfere with two Yatos fighting, one person got a hand through his chest and the other got his arm ripped clear off. Shinpachi is a truly brave soul.

24) Yeah, I probably was destined to love Abuto right from the start. He basically forfeited his own safety in order to save Kagura and Shinpachi: he kicked pushed them onto a roof and made no attempt whatsoever to save himself. I love that even though he was set up as a villain, he still had this compassionate side to him. Reminded me of Bansai...which I guess was the point since both of them similarly and hopelessly devoted to two misguided yet endearing psychopaths.

SHIPS TALLY:

Gintoki x Tsukuyo: lotsa mutual feelings going on between them in this arc. I would have to be blind not to see the signs. They definitely made me fear for my OTP. 

Abuto x Kamui: I think it’s pretty fair to say they were pretty much canon from the get-go. It’s my fault for getting distracted with other ships for Kamui.

Tsukuyo x Hinowa: the mutual feelings were strong for them too. I mean, heck, if Sorachi-sama were to refer to Gintoki and Hijikata as the sun and moon of Edo, I would freak the F out (even though, technically that would also mean they are destined to never be together other than during an eclipse like Isabeau and Navarre in Ladyhawke, but I’m just going to ignore that part).

Favorite character: Uhm rude this is already off to a rude start. Can I say all of them? I can’t leave anyone out I’m sorry I love them all too much. 

Least Favorite character: Those ball tap demons because 1) dudebros and 2) they made Chidi VERY UNCOMFORTABLE

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Eleanor/Tahani, Eleanor/Chidi. Eleanor/Tahani/Chidi, Jason/Janet, Eleanor/Tahani/Chidi/Jason/Janet (because love is a five-dimensional blob)

Character I find most attractive: again, rude. they are all so beautiful. Tahani though.

Character I would marry: Oh, dude. Eleanor? She is a mess, as am I, but also I think there is a chance we could work out. I think Chidi and I would send each other into anxiety spirals. 

Character I would be best friends with: Janet! We could info dump at each other and it would be the most fun. 

a random thought: What if Eleanor and Chidi stay on earth until they are old, and they end up having grandchildren? That would be SO GOOD

An unpopular opinion: Michael’s moral about-face was way too fast. I love where they have the character now, but I think it should have taken at least a season to get there. 

My Canon OTP: CHELEANOR

Most Badass Character: Honestly? Probably Eleanor. She is so fighty and determined

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): See my unpopular opinion. It’s not that they screwed him up exactly, but I would have preferred a different route. 

Favourite Friendship: Michael x Eleanor? Jason x Eleanor? Jason x Tahani? Tahani x Eleanor? Chidi x Jason? Please don’t make me choose!!

Character I most identify with: How many times so far have I gotten upset over having to choose?

(though that said, I got Eleanor and Tahani on that quiz, and I think that also makes sense)

Ship: Eleanor/Tahani

when of if I started shipping it: Several months before I started watching the show, a gifset of that “tahani means congratulations and al jamil means beautiful” scene crossed my dash. I started shipping it in earnest somewhere in the middle of S1 (once I started to really understand Tahani as a person)

my thoughts: They are SO GOOD for each other. They are each other’s first healthy/positive female friendship (technically this is a HC but I don’t think it’s a particular stretch). I think their relationship would work best once Tahani has taken some time alone to figure out who she is and then they can build from friendship to romantic relationship. 

What makes me happy about them: THEM BEING POSITIVE AND SUPPORTIVE OF EACH OTHER. LEARNING HOW TO BUILD EACH OTHER UP EVEN WHEN THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND THE OTHER PERSON. 

What makes me sad about them: That they haven’t been allowed to smooch yet? Really, that their romantic (or even platonic) friendship hasn’t been given the attention it deserves. 

things done in fanfic that annoys me: Pass. If you write fanfiction of these characters, you are a wonderful treasure and I am so grateful to you for sharing it with us. 

things I look for in fanfic: In-character dialogue and decision-making is the big one.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Chidi for Eleanor, obviously. Tahani is more difficult. Of the people introduced so far, I think they could build to a relationship between Tahani and Judge Gen or Tahani and Vicky

My happily ever after for them: They get bored of living in a huge house (way too much upkeep for Eleanor, and Tahani grows to find she doesn’t actually need the status symbol) and move into a house like Mindy’s. They take up gardening and love to cook with the things they’ve grown. They have a book club with the rest of the roaches, and they have them over weekly for dinner and discussion on ethics. Of course, all their friends have keys and it’s typical for at least one roach to be in the house hanging out at any given time. They love each other, they love their friends, they love their lives. Oh and also they get married in their garden with Michael officiating and Jason is the flower person. 

Character: Janet

How I feel about this character: VERY POSITIVELY. With all the knowledge in the universe at her disposal, she values kindness the most. I’m tearing up thinking about how important Janet is and how much I love her. 

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Jason. I’m also down with the five-dimensional blob where she, Jason, Tahani, Eleanor, Chidi are all in a relationship.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Janet x Michael, for sure! Brotp: the reason is friends! is everything to meMy unpopular opinion about this character: I kind of wish the creators had used they/them pronouns for the character. One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Honestly, I don’t know? I LOVE what they’ve done with her. I do wish I could have seen her learn how to be Bad Janet. 

Favorite friendship for this character: Brotp: the reason is friends! But since I already gave that as an answer, I really love the conversation she and Eleanor had about relationships/derek/jason

My crossover ship: Oh this is tricky. Janet x Marcus (Holt’s nephew from B99) could be really cute.

OHH NICE, now we're both dead from all that went down!! Watching all the attempts was so entertaining that it totally caught me off guard when things got real with Chidi and Eleanor. For once I'm actually grateful for Mindy, hehe. Too bad she didn't ALSO sleep with Tahani another timeline (as far as we know - flashbacks to Attempt #218 when? :P) Oh and the whole thing with Vicky and the twist at the end...I'm always impressed with how they keep the show fresh and us guessing!!

Oooh gawd, all those attempts though. JASON FIGURED IT OUT?! Oooh, this is low. Yep, this one hurts. Lmao! It was so much fun!

I also enjoyed the blink of an eye attempt where Tahani was supposed to be Eleanor’s soulmate, even if it was purely for fanfare (and kinda confusing because the whole point was to keep the four humans separated at first after the initial attempt proved they would just connect and help each other grow to be better and stronger together; so what’s the point in making Eleanor and Tahani soulmates?).

I think the other reason I was intrigued though was because of the confident saunter Tahani put on as she posed in Eleanor’s doorway. For all the times we’ve seen Eleanor give her a compliment or announce her sexual orientation self-discovery, Tahani has never really reacted positively to it. She’s always got some confused pout/frown/neutral expression on her face when it’s brought up. Her smiling and posing intensely in Eleanor’s doorway as she’s announced to be her soulmate really makes me wonder how their eternal afterlife would have gone. (I especially wonder about it because, when Chidi first meets Eleanor in season one, he says her name and calls himself her soulmate upon entry into her house without any prompting; that means that Michael had probably preemptively explained a little about her to him before that intro scene took place. In my head, the very mention to Tahani during a similar chat would at the very least give away Eleanor’s gender, right? So she must not mind the possibility somewhere deep down.)

Still sad that Michael said one of the things the humans hated was “Tahani hates Eleanor”, like no, where did that come from? I mean, sure, they don’t have the strongest/most positive connection (and I hope that theirs gets explored more in this season), but their relationship is probably 65-75% good and building each other up over the 25-35% bad and tearing each other down.

I’m aaaaalso really hoping that one of the eventual plot threads of the series is the introduction of the actual Good Place and some tinkering with the point system (if what we’ve learned in the canon is accurate/not a lie the Bad Place told the humans for the sake of their plot) and the way that one’s motivation can completely fork their chances at getting into the actual Good Place. Maybe a more sufficient Medium Place will be created or maybe, somehow, Eleanor and friends will actually be elevated to the Good Place (though I’m not sure that’s possible)?

I’m also still waiting for further verification that Janet is retaining knowledge/memories from the first fake Good Place attempt. It doesn’t really make sense that the rebooting she goes through ends up erasing her memories when the whole point of her mainframe is for her to gain more social experience/knowledge/etiquette/etc each time she’s restarted/uploaded with the mass amount of data she’s known for having. Once she’s re-uploaded everything, whatever she’d learned of previously should still exist in there because that’s the point, isn’t it? That’s why she feels like “each generation of new Janet” represents personal growth, like she said to Chidi in season one, so…

Anyway, any theories/hopes from you, anon?

EDIT: Oh, I forgot about the Eleanor x Chidi bit you mentioned! OMFG, ANON. OMG. I’ve always known they were teetering on the edge of br/otp, but I think what hit me hardest about that VHS tape was the fact that CHIDI ACTUALLY MADE A HARD CHOICE. I mean, sure, perhaps there was no second or third woman to confuse him/scare him into worrying he’d devastate them in this attempt, but still. Chidi’s natural response when things get real is to complain of a stomach ache and deflect to anything else. Can you imagine how sure he had to be of his feelings for Eleanor to say “I love you” even once with that much confidence?! A guy who’s openly stated before that he’s never once had a girlfriend he truly loved in all his time on earth??!?

*cracks fingers* okay well i mean you asked (most of this is working off season one since i haven’t watched s2 episodes as much as s1)

How I feel about this character: Quite possibly one of my favorite characters to ever exist in any show but definitely my favorite on the show. Listen, I just really love hilarious, full of themselves (but don’t know they’re full of themselves), semi delusional characters (”my hair is barely cascading down my shoulders”) and honestly the actress has some of the best lines in the show. She’s smart as hell and puts up with a lot of shit from every where and does it gracefully and with a little sass and I love her so much

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Hmm, I wonder..... Eleanor and no version of the show will convince me otherwise. They’re meant to be soulmates and I have about five long ass paragraphs that I sent to you last week with all my reasonings (most of that is shot to shit now that s2 has aired but still) if Michael wants them tortured then having Tahani/Eleanor soulmate starter would have been the best (I mean come on, Tahani believes 100% that she belongs in The Good Place and Eleanor’s default is to tell her soulmate right away so to have Tahani put on the ‘happy soulmate’ front extra hard to make it seem they both belong would have been amazing (and torturous for both) and I think Eleanor would have seen Tahani trying and tried to actually be better (without Chidi’s ethics lessons it would have been harder and longer) and I think Tahani would have chilled out a bit) and I’m so mad we didn’t get to see it because until stated otherwise that one lasted the longest and was one of the more successful attempts (pls leave my delusional gay ass alone with this)

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Chidi? Probably? It makes the most sense out of the other three. But that episode where they bonded at the cafe in season one was adorable and something they both needed so more Chidi/Tahani bonding time where they just complain about Eleanor (lovingly, and how she’s trying but ultimately failing at trying to be good)

My unpopular opinion about this character: Idk. I’m not to heavy in the fandom what do people say about her? I mean the show is severely lacking in Tahani content and I really want to see more of her

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Do.... do I need to say it? Do I need to say that I would quite literally pay to see a full episode of Attempt #218? Because that’s where my heart lies and we all know it. Besides actually being Eleanor’s soulmate I just want more Tahani this season, I know it’s only been two episodes but it’s still not enough
