Hualian dance au where Xie Lian was a classically trained danseur rising star before crashing and Hua Cheng is an experimental choreographer who’s hella big on Instagram but never performs himself
They meet during Hua Cheng’s first nutcracker when he’s one of the soldiers who dies in the battle scene and Xie Lian is the nutcracker/prince (I mean. You can’t not)
Xie Lian pushes for training in his school to include things pointe work for men, more cross-technique training, etc. but gets shut down by his head teacher
He’s taken under the wing of principal/international star Jun Wu when he’s accepted into a company at 17 and is immediately launched onto all those 25 Under 25 To Watch lists
His fall is. Ugly. And public.
He disappears from the dance world and winds up like...idk...doing volunteer outreach for the local community center and working with the community gardens/fridges a lot
He runs into Hua Cheng while HC is scoping a new filming location (he’s in a phase with incorporating industrial settings into his choreo or smth as commentary on the corruption of art under capitalism. Yin Yu is. Tired) while Xie Lian is picking up litter
Xie Lian has no idea he’s talking to a big shot on dancestagram and is just, you know, Xie Lian
Hua Cheng is crisising. As he does
Someone catches the two of them and the pic goes viral with all sorts of speculation
Having now found Xie Lian, Jun Wu reaches out and tries to convince him to come join the company where he’s now AD, promising him opportunities and a way back into the field, but Xie Lian keeps shying away
Stuff happens idk fam
This entire setup is to have hualian rediscover the joy and fun of dancing together that’s it. They wind up choreographing something lovely and performing it together and everyone’s like :O (except fengqing who are. Furious and horrified ofc) and they kiss kiss fall in love, dance off into the sunset
This one is near and dear to me, I normally don’t get personal with my posts but this is a gig that I had the privilege of designing a few months ago.
It’s rare when you work with individuals that are so passionate about what they do that you get to see them at such a pure and vulnerable state. It was truly inspiring to be a part of such an amazing show and work with such talented artists.
