You know, when you sit down to think about the design principles and the history involved, it becomes obvious that the B1 'Battle' Droid model was really supposed to be a Security Droid.

Like... listen. You look at the design of literally any other battle droid, and there's an inbuilt weapon. There's some degree of armor or shielding. B2s, Droidekas, Vulture Starfighters, SPIDER DROIDS! The only exception I can think of is the BX Commando Droid, and they're explicitly designed to be able to put on armor and fake being a clone--so, again, commando droid, not battle droid.

But B1s? The original OOM line was only an effective army because of their control computer. You look at the Clone Wars era battle droids, being made to fight like soldiers--and it becomes increasingly clear this is not what they were designed for. Maybe one or two can be reprogrammed, but a hundred? A thousand? And even outside their performance, you can look at their design--no inbuilt weapons, minimal armor, compressed storage, more emphasis on comms connection than combat ability.

Sure, the Trade Federation turned the B1s into an army, but even then they were either terrible shock troopers or somewhat decent officers supported by a better spread of actual battle droids. I am certain that the 'battle droid' moniker came from this attempted militarization and propaganda on both sides of the clone wars, and not from the B1's design documents.
