I feel like there's this weird like... mirroring of white man's burden where instead of the burden being to "civilize" non-whites, the burden is to help preserve their culture but in the most racist way possible by acting like BIPOC would never come up with concepts like democracy or gender/race/class equality or secularism on their own and it's not just bad for white people to force themselves into BIPOC cultures and try to change, it's also bad for the BIPOC cultures themselves to try and change and all the human rights activists, democracy supporters, and secularists are traitors brainwashed by the West and it's right for their governments to suppress, abuse, imprison, and murder them.

Anyway, Alejandro, who has a habit of pressing down on Rudy's tongue to silence him so that he can look down on him and remark about how he's just so noisy and anyone could hear him and walk in to see him defiling the sanctity of the church.

And Alejandro, who does the same in public in front of people because no one else sees but it evokes a very specific reaction in Rudy. One that he'll scold him for later, making him skip through pages of his bible looking for a story about sin, all while three fingers deep in his whole and torturing the poor seminarian's prostate.

Every time I see this scene I end up thinking about the whole. Spider and butterfly conversation. Nai is the spider with the butterfly (Vash) caught in his web of knives. To save his kind, he must consume everything that makes Vash and in turn, make him into spider too. The roots, then, are Vash's own web, ensnaring their butterfly sisters, who must be devoured to create new spiders (the forced pregnancy to create new independents).

Which is like, purely my interpretation, but I do like driving myself insane
