Thoughts on a First Lady wearing a tiara? I feel that First ladies should have proper jewels for formal occasions, If any FLOTUS could have made tiaras for non-royals a fashion standard it certainly would have been Jackie... singlehandedly, had she decided to do so.

I have a post here about tiaras worn by the First Ladies of the United States.  I’ve gotten comments in the past similar to this about how Jackie Kennedy could have made tiaras for first ladies a thing but really it’s the opposite of that and she was the last one who got away with any hair jewelry resembling a tiara. 

Modern tiaras (late 1700s to now) didn’t always have this royal stigma for lack of a better word as they currently do.  Tiaras can and have been worn by anyone that can afford them and they were extremely popular with rich Americans in the Gilded Age.  After WWI and WWII, formal white tie events declined and so did the use of tiaras.  As everything became less formal during the 20th century, tiaras started to be seen as something only for royalty because they were really the only ones still dressing in white tie regularly. 

Politicians and their spouses generally don’t want to be seen as super rich or out of touch with the people of their country.  If a FLOTUS were to wear a tiara today she would be criticized for trying to be royalty and as much as I yell that tiaras are for everyone not just royalty even I think that it would be a pr disaster.

Now something cool that I would like to see more countries do is create state jewelry like Finland.  In 2017, in honor of 100 years since Finland’s independence, the Finnish Goldsmiths’ Association presented a necklace and pair of earrings to the country and the set is meant to be worn by either the president or their spouse.  Everyone and everything involved in the making of the set is from Finland which I love.  The gemstones are beryls (all of the articles translate it as beryl but I don’t know if that’s a translation issue or if the color is not right to be considered aquamarine) from Luumäki, South Karelia and the gold is from the River Lemmenjoki.  It was designed by Heli Kauhanen and made by Juha Loikala.  So far only the current Finnish first lady, Jenni Haukio, has had a chance to wear them but I’m looking forward to seeing the set become historical jewelry that’s worn by many women in the future.
