Noticed recently that the Siren’s melody in Suffering while instructing Ody to travel through Scylla is THE SAME as Zeus’s part at the end of The Horse and The Infant. That melody to me feels like The Gods’ will, an unavoidable, inscrutable choice.
Ody must drop the infant or all his work is for naught. Ody must travel through Scylla or he will never find a way home. It’s the Gods’ plan.
#epic musical#epic the musical#fascinating that as a younger man he had this desperate counter melody to Zeus’s demands#but then with the Sirens there’s a brutal acceptance of what he needs to sacrifice to return home. no counter melody#OH OH and THEN that pleading counter melody comes back in Mutiny but this time against Eurylochus’s Luck Runs Out melody#he makes ONE ruthless decision and returns to his desperate pleading against an immutable fate#oh it’s so juicy#and it returns again one song later with Zeus making him choose between himself or his crew#but his pleading ‘please don’t make me do this’ is more beaten down#like Ody unconsciously knows this counter melody does not work and is already mourning his next decision#oh Jorge the little secrets you hide in these songs#I’m excavating them like an archeologist
