flesh and bone | chp 1
Simon 'Ghost' Riley x Reader oc
After a messy divorce, you move into a rural house determined to continue on with your life. Until you discover your new home is less empty than you believed it to be
Warnings: none atm, but this will be a nsfw story so please, no under 18 readers
“Have you had any problems with… ghosts?” The words feel stupid leaving your mouth, the grimace that moves over your face displaying how silly you feel, but it’s a question that you need answered. If only to remind yourself that it’s just as stupid and impossible as you also believe it to be. But still.
The line goes quiet for a moment, and you can already imagine how this will end. You’ll be evicted from your new rental, forced to live with your parents, again, all because you were a bit frightened by living alone for the first time in a while, and had settled on ‘ghosts’ as the reason for your unease. A breathy laugh finally comes from the other end, and you feel yourself relaxing, minutely. Your eyes close and brows fall, free hand coming up to rub your face. The noises you’ve heard are nothing, just an old house settling. The barely there shadows, just your eyes playing tricks on you. You’ve been in it all of a day and eaten nothing, of course everything has you on edge.
“Can’t say I’ve ever had anyone ask that question!” Your landlord’s quiet voice answers, and for some reason hearing the old woman absolutely aghast at your question makes you feel better. “To be honest, this is a pretty new property to me. I can do some digging into former tenants, if you’re convinced, but in all the years I’ve been doing this I’ve never had any problems with ghosts.” She chuckles as she speaks, and it’s somewhat infectious. You huff, smile, and shake your head.
“No, no, that makes total sense. I think I just needed to hear someone say it, so thanks. Sorry to bother you with this nonsense.” It feels foolish now, and the embarrassment floods your body. The conversation ends quickly after that, with a gentle reminder to not be a stranger and a firm reminder about when rent is due, and then you’re alone again. Sighing, you return your phone to its place in your back pocket, and get back to moving boxes to where they belong. They’re everywhere, it feels like, but you suppose that’s what happens when you live in one place for too long and settle, only to be forced to move again.
Not that you were forced. It was time to be alone again. Your parents had been lifesavers when they’d offered to take you back in after your disastrous divorce. Married too young, a divorcee by twenty six, and living with your parents again. They’d given you all the time you needed to rebound, to try and gently put back together the fractured pieces of your reality. It had taken time but you’d done it, and by twenty eight you were back on your own two feet.
Picking up a box labeled bathroom, you made your way back to your bedroom and into the ensuite. This place had been a steal, all things considered. Your budget hadn’t been great, the salary of a rural teacher was okay but not that fair, yet you’d still managed to find something to suit you. It was a small home situated not too far from the county school that you worked at, a small two bedrooms with a combined living and kitchen area. It was perfect for someone that was willing to make work their life and spend no time at home. The way things were going, you had a distinct feeling the school will be more of a home than this place, what with the whole believing your new home might be haunted thing. Which isn’t real, you remind yourself as you catch a glimpse of your face in your bathroom mirror, rising from putting the box down. It’s just you here, you repeat, touching your mirrored hand in an intimate gesture of togetherness with yourself. Just you and the corn fields. Swallowing, you nod at yourself and get back to sorting boxes.
---
Night comes slowly but suddenly, as it always does in the Midwest. A slow crawl to darkness and then suddenly the heaviness of it settles, all the lights needing to be on, illuminating the shadows that appear in a moment's silence. You had opened all the windows in the house earlier, trying to air the space out and desperate for a cool breeze to break up the summer heat. Now, it allows for the noises of the evening to filter into your abode, the cicadas and crickets perfectly noisy companions to your silence, and every once in a while a car drives by to interrupt.
Lazily, you take another swig of the Founders beer that you bought at the local grocery store, a little family run thing with not many choices but just enough to have what you needed. The bitter liquid rinses your mouth, and you grimace as you swallow. You would have preferred a belgian or sour, but ipa’s dominated the shelves and you had chosen the least offensive sounding one, something that you could potentially palate. You bring your second bottle back down to rest against your thigh and the couch cushion, and your head falls back to rest against the back of your couch, the velvet of it smooth against the back of your neck.
The bottle is cold and refreshing against your leg and it’s a reminder of the sticky sweat that has dried against your body. Moving is exhausting. You’d been at it all day, boxes were finally in the places that they belonged, but nothing had been unpacked. Your large furniture had been moved whole, which wasn’t much. It left you with a put together couch, your bed, and a small two person dining table. But boxes were on every surface, waiting to be unpacked and settled, which you craved. You needed the sense of normalcy that living in your own space would provide, even if establishing it was tiring you to the bone. You could feel an ache forming in your lower back, deep in the muscle, while every other part of you groaned as you pushed yourself upward off the couch to stand, beer bottle still in hand.
Taking another swig, you move down the hall on unstable feet, body unwilling to bend to your command due to the combination of exhaustion and alcohol. You yawn as you move into your bedroom and then to the bathroom, shedding your shorts and tank top as you do so. A shower feels too complicated to manage, and also you’re lacking a shower curtain, so a bath it is.
The tub is nothing special, but it’s large enough to fit your body and that’s all that matters. You sit on the edge of it, thumbing the rim of your beer bottle as you wait for the water to reach the right temperature to take care of your aches. When it’s reached, a scalding embrace that leaves the skin of your test foot turning pink, you know it's time. Plugging the drain, you plop yourself into the empty tub and lean back as it begins to fill, one foot propped next to the faucet while the other is thrown over the side of the tub, swinging in the air. It fills in record time, it feels like, and soon you’re enveloped by the burning water, resting your head back against the tiled wall. The heat floods your body and you can’t help the content little sigh that escapes from your mouth as you sink down into it, chin coming into contact with the water as you contort yourself to cover the most skin possible with the water. You take another drink, finishing off your beer, and discard the bottle onto the floor to let your arm slip into the watery warmth.
With the slow dripping from the faucet creating an almost metronome like noise, it’s easy for you to empty your brain, turning off the lights in your mind, one by one until all you’re focusing on is the sound of the drops and keeping time of your breathing. Stress you didn’t know you were holding on to flees, and you know tonight you’ll actually be able to sleep soundly. Last night had been hard. You had been exhausted, but being in a new surrounding by yourself had complicated the matter of falling asleep. Not to mention your brain landing on ‘house is haunted’ as a perfectly reasonable excuse to every noise you heard. Smiling, it almost feels silly now to even think about.
Silly, of course, until you hear footsteps.
Or at least, what you think sound like footsteps.
Your eyes shoot open toward the cracked bathroom door, slinking further into the water, as if it allows you to hide. The creaking of the wood is distinct in the tiny home, and it’s unmistakable.
Quickly you try to rationalize. All the doors were locked. Windows, despite being open, had screens and you would have heard if someone had forced one in. At least you hope you would.
It’s quiet, suddenly, no other noises seeming to exist outside the periodic footsteps. Moving seems stupid, but you can’t keep laying naked in a bathtub while an intruder moves around your house.
You try so hard to exit the tub quietly, the water only sloshing a bit. Clothes seem like a silly thing to worry about in the moment, so you only bother to throw a towel around yourself, instead focusing on a weapon.
The easiest answer, of course, is the curtain rod leaning against a pile of boxes. The cold metal feels too slim in your hands, but you really have no other option. Briefly, you hear your father in your head, good midwestern man that he is, insisting that you have a gun out in the country. His reasoning, for the most part, had been fair. It would take far too long for any help to arrive in the case that you needed to defend yourself. Like this. You’d refused, instead settling on a taser that was packed away somewhere in a box.
You curse yourself as you move, holding the rod like a batter at the ready, hefted behind your shoulder. The floor creaks slightly under your foot as you cross the doorway of your bedroom into the hallway, and the noise makes you wince. You hear nothing in response, so you continue to move, only a few footsteps more until you can see in your living space. There’s no one in the living room, so you peek the corner into the kitchen, and freeze.
There, standing in front of your sliding glass door, staring out into the backyard, is a giant. Well, not a real giant, but considering your lack in height, they might as well be. Their form is hulking, all encompassing that you can barely see out the glass to the corn field that your house backs up on. It doesn’t help that they’re dressed entirely in black, a material you can’t name, hood pulled up to cover their head. It almost looks like a cape, but your brain can’t make sense of why someone would be wearing a cape.
Swallowing, suppressing the cold that floods your bloodstream and the urge to go back and hide in your bathroom until they’ve finished what they came for, you start to move again. You adjust your sweaty grip on the bar as you move around the kitchen island, and you hold your breath. You get as close as you can.
You swing.
The bar passes through the form.
Your eyes widen.
They turn, somehow aware of the bodily interruption that you’d just caused, and you come face to face with blacked out eyes and the visage of a skull, yellowed with age and crevices black with what you think is dirt.
You drop the rod, and the world goes black.

“I can’t believe we’re doing this,” you tell Jungkook, as you both haul your luggage and make your way across the airport.
“___, we’ve been together for 4 years. We’ve taken so many trips in that time,” he chuckles, switching bags with you so he’s pulling 2 trolleys and you’re pulling 1.
“Never alone, though!” You clarify. “We’re always with our friends or my parents or Namjoon. This time it’s just you and me and I’m really excited.”
“So am I, angel. It's a good thing you got to convince your parents and Mr. Han and Namjoon to let you go, then.”
“Well, I am with you. You are a trained bodyguard with laser eyes and hands of steel with spidey reflexes,” you remind him.
“Okay, I see Jin is getting you into superhero movies now. I’m way better than them, by the way.”
“Not really. You’re more good-looking though, I give you that,” you giggle.
You lean on his shoulder as you await the rental car he’ll be driving this whole trip. “But come on, barely anything bad happens in New Zealand.”
“True, but we can never be too sure. No one place is ever truly, completely safe. But we’re all good, we’ve got our bases covered,” he assures.
“What does that mean?” You turn to him questioningly.
“I’ve got the police on speed dial.”
“You what? Jungkook!”
“By your father’s and Mr. Han’s orders! We spoke to the station already. They’ll always have someone on standby should we encounter anything.”
“That is so embarrassing,” you frown. “What are we even gonna encounter? Sheep? Birds? Penguins? Even the animals here are harmless.”
“People, ___. I’m referring to people,” he deadpans. “Remember that trip to Scotland when a man was harassing you? It was a small, safe town and—“
“He thought I was his missing wife! And he only thought that I looked like her because he was drunk on whiskey!”
“That’s what he made us believe. We’ll never truly know,” Jungkook shakes his head.
“Ugh, you guys are—“
“Don’t say we're overreacting because I will tackle you to the ground.”
You smirk. “What if I want you to?”
Jungkook’s face changes. “We’ll have plenty of time for that this whole week, okay?” He whispers in your ear, as he notices the man you’re waiting for approach both of you.
You bite back a moan at the thought of what’s ahead.
You insisted on this trip as a celebration of all sorts - Jungkook had just celebrated his birthday and your 4th year anniversary is in a few weeks. Countering the end-of-year craziness, you both decided to head to the South Island for a week. It’s really meant to be a break, knowing that things will get busy again and you just want alone time together.
New Zealand seemed like the perfect place - you could just lay back and enjoy the views and feel like you’ve already accomplished a lot. You don’t really intend on doing many activities while you’re here; you just want to drive around and bask in nature and enjoy being the domestic, mature couple that you are who can manage being on their own. The safety of the country and the towns you’ll be in convinced Mr. Han that Jungkook is all you’ll need.
“Hmm, good thing we’ll be staying in secluded properties, huh?” You whisper back. “I can be as loud as I want.”
Jungkook chuckles, your playfulness something he’s already used to, but he can’t help getting turned on at the thought. “Why are we always so horny?”
Your laugh surprises the man and you quickly apologize. He waves you off and with his bright and welcoming smile, he leads you inside one of the rooms for an orientation and a quick guide on how to go to your desired places.
You don’t really have a plan. All you and Jungkook agreed on was where to set up your base in the two towns you’ll stay in; you’ll drive around and figure out what you’ll do from there.
Perhaps that’s what excites you the most. There’s less stress this way; it’s just you and Jungkook exploring the place without any fear for your safety or worry about your image. You’re just a regular couple out here, doing things you wouldn’t normally be able to do back home, and that’s all you could hope for.
Jungkook loads your things in the trunk after a few more questions and you both bid the man goodbye.
You get in the passenger seat, the feeling unfamiliar yet exciting. Jungkook starts the car and it’s not long after when you take his free hand and intertwine your fingers with his.
“I’ve always wanted to do this,” you say.
“Uh, hold my hand?” He turns towards you.
“While you’re driving, duh!” You pout at his teasing. “It just feels so couple-y and we never get to do it. But now, we have a week of just this,” you excitedly say, peppering his hand with kisses.
“I’m quite amused with the little things that are making you happy out here, angel.”
“What can I say? I’m a simple girl,” you shrug.
He laughs and takes your hand to his lips this time. “You drive me crazy and I love you so much.”
“I know,” you say softly, as you admire him in his dark grey sweatshirt, with the sun reflecting on his eyes and his smile still the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen. “I love you so much, too.”
**
You hear a low grumble from the bed several steps from where you are in the kitchen of the apartment you rented for your first stop. It's the lone property that’s situated atop a hill with glass all around. The scene is magnificent as it overlooks snow capped mountains and a ranch. The light from the morning sun shines through, giving the interior a calming glow.
There’s another grumble, prompting you to tell the mussed-haired man currently sitting half naked on the bed that he can go back to sleep.
“You’re making pancakes and they smell good,” he says with his gruff morning voice.
You’re about to tell him it’s still a few minutes off, but then you hear grunting and you see him doing his usual morning push ups by the bed and you have to stop what you’re doing unless you want the pancakes to burn.
With nothing but his boxers on, Jungkook is a sight to behold, with his honeyed skin glimmering under the sun and his strained face reminding you of all kinds of things.
“Not burning anything there, angel?” He chuckles, knowing your eyes are on him.
“Nope, I learned my lesson,” you respond, recalling the time you burned the meat you were cooking because he wanted to do his exercise inside his apartment, and you just couldn’t look away.
He laughs, stands up, and kisses your cheek. He mumbles his deep good morning in your ear, then heads to the bathroom while you return to your task.
Yesterday was a tiring first day, mostly because of the driving and multiple stops you took - from looking at scenery to grabbing a meal to buying things from the supermarket - before settling in your rental. Jungkook made his premium ramen for dinner and then you came on his face as he ate you out while you enjoyed the view of the Milky Way from the glass wall by the bed.
You smile at the memory and how gently he made love to you right after.
Jungkook returns and leans by the counter, watching you in your robe that’s slightly open to show you only in your underwear. Two plates with a stack of pancakes each lay before you, and you place the scoops of butter on top. He watches you tenderly, feeling sentimental at the thought that he could be waking up to this—to you—everyday of his life.
He’s broken out of his daze with your cheeky smile and a bottle of whipped cream in your hand.
“May I?” You flutter your eyelashes, and he can’t really say no, especially since he ends up thoroughly enjoying the different things you propose you both do to spice things up.
You’d told him once that you never felt comfortable enough with your former partners to do them, and Jungkook took that to heart, pleased that with him, you always feel safe and respected enough to go out of your comfort zone every once in a while.
He stands closer to you and with his desirous eyes, he smirks and says, “do whatever you want, angel.”
Your pussy throbs at the sound of his voice, and you proceed to swirl the whipped cream on his neck, with him angling it for better access and you biting your lip as it sticks to his skin.
You lick it off his neck, sensually, then you suck on his flesh to savor the taste more. You moan as you do, getting lost in the act, as his pants get louder and his hands start kneading your ass, pushing you towards him for friction.
You kiss him deeply before you swirl on his pecs this time, his dark nipples being covered by the pillowy cream. He laughs briefly at your cheekiness but grunts right after you suck on his bud then drag your sugar-stained tongue across his chest to the other end, sucking on that, too. Your fingers ghost over his taut torso while he directs your face towards his, and crashes his mouth to yours, his tongue sliding in to taste the sweetness off you.
He licks the leftover cream on your lips and grunts. “My turn.”
Your eyes don’t leave each other as he guides you towards the bar stool, sitting you down then getting the chocolate syrup from the counter. He unties your robe but keeps it on, the sight of you like this always doing things to him.
You both watch with desire as Jungkook tips the bottle, loving the way the syrup slowly drips on your body, across your breasts and down your waist. He catches it with his tongue before it goes further south, his wet muscle stimulating you further as it travels up, sucking in places he likes, until it reaches your breasts.
He swallows them whole and sucks hard, but it’s slow and sensual, as if he wants to savor this. Your moans are deep and long, and you caress the back of his neck as he pleasures you, finding warmth in the way he takes you - passionately, intentionally, but with so much love and desire.
He licks everything off and meets your lips again, and you’re both on a sugar-high from each other’s tastes, as the cream and syrup mix as you kiss.
The need heightens, and it’s not long before he pushes aside your thong and aligns his aching cock to your throbbing pussy, slightly lifting your legs for the angle that he knows would make you feel so good.
He sucks on your neck as he holds your waist with one hand and supports himself against the counter with the other, thrusting into you steadily but with so much force that you feel him so deep inside you. It’s mind-blowing as it is so loving, as he looks at you with so much affection, swallowing your moans and gripping you tighter.
He chants he loves you in between curses, and it’s the kind of sex that tells you more, that makes you feel more. The tears that form are due to the pleasure and the overwhelming love you have for this man.
Mornings of domesticity and lovemaking are truly your favorite.
He strokes your breast again, flicking your nipples as he increases his pace to reach your highs, your parted lips and loud moans pushing him over the edge. You come together, with him burying his head in the crook of your neck, as you trace patterns on his back, humming as he catches his breath.
“You tired, babe?” You tease.
“Fuck, yeah. I’m gonna need bacon and eggs with those pancakes,” he says, as he stands back up and you pepper his abdomen with kisses.
“Uh… I used all of our eggs. I couldn’t get the batter right,” you shyly smile.
He laughs at your cute expression but lets it go, knowing you tried, and anything you make for him is always special.
“Guess we’re stopping over at another supermarket later then,” he states.
You nod in response. “We’ve got all the time out here, Jungkook.”
**
Time feels to fly by so slowly out here. For the next 2 days, you bike around town, do a bit of shopping, enjoy a boat ride on a glacier-filled lake, and go bungee jumping.
It’s midway through the week when you take another couple of hour-drive to a lakeside town and settle in the coziest cottage you’ve ever seen. It’s absolutely stunning, as the wooden walls and beams, faux rugs, and fireplace make it feel so homey, but the linens and furniture give an elegant touch. There’s an outdoor tub and seating decorated with fairy lights, overlooking the bluest lake you’ve ever seen, which also happens to literally be a few steps away from the property.
Jungkook had chosen this, too, opting for something small but luxurious and private just the same. He had to make sure that security was good, as he always does when checking where to stay during your trips.
It’s so intimate and you can already imagine nights just gazing at the stars over hot chocolate and s’mores and Jungkook’s cuddles.
You stare out to the lake and marvel at its beauty and you see him do the same. You approach him and hug him from behind, intertwining your fingers with his.
“It’s so beautiful out here, babe. Thank you for choosing this,” you whisper in his ear.
“I can get romantic sometimes, you know,” he states. “I got the host to add a couple of things so the place fits what I want for us here.”
“And what do you want for us, hmm?” You ask, turning him around.
“Something comfortable and peaceful, a little snug but still luxe because my girlfriend likes fancy things,” he laughs. “But something just for us. Something that feels like home.”
You warm at the thought of what Jungkook wants to say with all this. Your lips meet his in a sensual kiss and you hum at how good and natural this all feels.
“It already feels like that. But I still want our house to be 10x bigger than this.”
“I know, I know,” he laughs.
You both sit on the outdoor chairs with your legs laid on top of his.
“What did we say we were gonna do out here?” You ask, as you both enjoy the early afternoon breeze.
“Well, there’s visiting the hot springs, stargazing, trekking up a mountain… What do you feel like doing?”
“All of those,” you smile. “Even the trekking. I can’t vacation out here and not go to a mountain.”
“That’s… a lot of walking. Are you sure?” He questions.
“You could always carry me on your back if I get tired,” you tease. “But fine, let’s see. What are our other options?”
“We could go to a resort for a cable car or something,” he suggests, taking his phone out to look online. “There’s also a skywalk and a helicopter tour. Or we could—“
“There’s a heli tour?!” You exclaim.
“Yes, angel. With sights like this, there are dozens out here. What do you want?”
He scrolls down a list of various tours nearby, searching for the best sight, which really, is everything, as if you can’t go wrong with whatever you both go for.
“You choose! I’m sure you’ll read through their security whatever anyway and that’s how you’ll decide,” you state. “But anything overlooking the snow-capped mountains would be great. They look so majestic from far away and I can imagine how much better they’d be up close.”
“Hmm, okay. This one seems nice,” he says, showing you a photo from a website.
“I’ll go where you want, babe,” you kiss his cheek. “Can we go today?”
“I’ll book them first, alright?” He chuckles. “Let’s try tomorrow.”
“Okay, so hot springs today, it is!”
Jungkook smiles and internally pats himself in the back, as his plan seems to be going accordingly.
“Alright, angel,” he kisses you. “I can’t wait for tomorrow.”
**
Jungkook stands by the door that leads outside, marveling at how the lake looks in the morning. It’s a big day today and he feels all sorts of nervousness and excitement. After everything he went through, after what he’d become, he never really thought he’d get here.
He’s been sentimental this whole trip, thinking of how every birthday since you’ve been together has been the best, how he’s grown and learned so much about himself in the past 4 years, how capable he is to forgive and to love and to accept love. Not only does he get to be with you alone out here, he also gets to experience what life would be like once you both take that next step.
He feels your arms wrap around his waist and your soft lips against his bare shoulders.
“Missed you in bed,” you hum in your sleepy voice. “Can you come back with me? Just want more of you before we head out.”
He nods and you lead him back. While Jungkook loses his mind when you’re dressed in your satin night robes, seeing you in his oversized sweaters is also pretty special, like his dark green fleece one that you’re wearing right now.
You both lay in bed facing the window with a fantastic view, with him hugging you from behind this time. He’s peppering kisses on your neck while you pull his arms to try and make him hold you tighter.
“I don’t wanna squeeze you. You complain when I do that,” he says.
“Don’t care. It’s cold today. Just want you to hold me like you don’t want to let me go,” you mumble, eyes fluttering close.
Jungkook doesn’t say anything, as the words hit home. He won’t ever let you go; that’s what today is all about.
But he does as you ask, turning you to face him with his arms wrapped around you, his legs on top of yours, and your face flushed against his bare chest.
“Jungkook, you’re squishing me. I can’t breathe!”
And all he does is laugh while you squeal until he feels your bite on his skin, and he loosens his grip. He’s met with furrowed brows and the cutest pout. He kisses it off your lips and you smile and hug him this time.
Mornings of laughter and kisses are truly some of his favorites.
**
“It’s a wonderful view from there, I promise,” the pilot assures as he leads you to the helicopter with Jungkook and another guide.
“You sure it’s worth it?” You ask nervously.
“It’s pretty life-changing, actually,” he smiles.
You look at Jungkook who playfully shrugs. “I believe him.”
“Okay, let’s do this, then,” you say and enter the aircraft.
You hold Jungkook’s hand as you ascend into the air, your heart racing and your stomach doing somersaults due to nervousness and excitement.
You don’t know what to expect. All you told Jungkook yesterday was you wanted to fly over the snow-capped mountains but didn’t want to see photos because you want to be surprised; you want to see the view for the first time like this. You let him deal with the booking, knowing that he’d be asking a bunch of safety questions, as he always does.
You’ve flown over topography like this before, but being in the helicopter makes you feel so close, as you fly over clear lakes and lush hills. The smile doesn’t leave your face as you marvel at the scenery before you, especially as you go further towards where the mountains are.
They’re so vast, going as far as the eyes could see. They look so massive, and it amazes you how the earth fell into place the way it did for something so majestic to form. The snow looks so soft, as if you could just sink into it and you’d oddly feel warm and comforted.
Jungkook looks at you with awe. He’s never seen this view before, but he can’t help but think that your face and your smile - so enchanted like this - rival what’s below him. He rubs your hand as it squeezes his, thinking how different it will look not long from now.
“Not scared anymore?” He teases.
“I was only a little nervous,” you correct. “But it’s absolutely stunning, babe. They almost don’t look real. But they are, and we’re seeing them, and we’re gonna land on them.”
“We are,” he smiles. “I figured you really wanted to see these. You’ve started to like the mountains, huh?”
“Remember our trip to the National Park during my birthday after we got together?”
“Yeah. That was pretty special,” he recalls.
“You looked at the mountains with stars in your eyes that day. Your smile was so bright and I loved seeing you like that,” you admit. “And I thought that I wanted to see the world the way you see it, too. And every time I think about that day, I think about how I want us to keep seeing the world together.”
Jungkook takes a deep breath as he stares into your eyes. How everything has come together is beyond him, but he’s learned long ago to not question it. He’s here with you, gazing at something so beautiful, so enduring, while you’re both at the cusp of something that’s the same.
The guide turns to him with a smile and Jungkook knows it’s about time.
“We’re nearing the best part of the tour,” the pilot says. “Please look to your right.”
That’s the side where you’re seated, and you excitedly look out the window, waiting for whatever the best part is, wondering what else could look more amazing than what you’ve already seen.
The helicopter takes a turn and that’s when you see it. You read the words that are spelled on the snow over and over again until you no longer can because of the tears that are making your vision blurry.
___, marry me?
You cover your mouth as you sob. You’ve been waiting for this but you can’t help but think it’s all a dream, as if you’re still wrapping your mind around how real this is. You turn to Jungkook who’s looking partly worried and partly amused.
“Baby,” you sink into his chest.
“Please tell me this is a happy cry before I start crying myself,” he chuckles.
“It is,” you turn to him, kissing him deeply to answer a question you’d only read but haven’t actually heard him ask. “I love you. Oh my god, I love you so much.”
“I love you,” he laughs onto your lips. He’s about to officially ask you this time but you cry again, and all he can do is wipe the tears off your face and wait for a little longer, knowing that you’re probably still processing all this. You always leave him to feel all his emotions, and he’s just doing the same.
You look out the window again until you finally land and you immediately get off the aircraft, ready to head towards where the words are spelled, but Jungkook pulls your hand and you turn to him, confused.
“Can I finally, officially ask you, please?”
“Oh my god, yes!” You squeal. “I mean, yes, please ask me.”
You ready your hand out for him to place the ring and you hear people laugh around you. You look around and notice 2 of them holding cameras, while the other few present cheer you on.
Jungkook kneels on the ground and takes your hand, chuckling as he sees your eyes get glassy again.
“Angel,” he starts.
“Yes, babe?” Your voice shakes.
“Thank you for letting me in your life, and for breaking down my walls so I could let you in mine,” he continues, voice cracking as well. “Your love is the only one I’ve ever known, and it’s all I want to know for the rest of my life. I don’t ever want to be without it, without you. Will you marry me?”
You nod vigorously, mouthing yes in between trying to catch your breath. He takes the box from his pocket and places the ring on your finger, the tears flowing at how beautiful it looks on you.
He stands up and hugs you tightly. “I’m going to marry you, angel. We’re going to have such a good and happy life together,” he whispers.
“We will,” you say, as he turns to face you now.
You look at your ring-bearing hand and gasp at what you see - a cluster ring with an aquamarine gem at the center, beautifully surrounded by sapphires and diamonds.
“Jungkook, this is gorgeous,” you say softly, still admiring it.
You look at him and everything fades away. He looks back at you with stars in his eyes and the brightest smile, and the pilot was right - the view here is truly life-changing.
Jungkook basks in your warm, sweet smile. He couldn’t wait for today, even if he planned for the proposal to happen towards the end of the trip, having to fake not knowing which tour to take yesterday when he’d arranged this months ago.
So many times he wanted to just do it, usually during the simplest moments of just both of you doing mundane things together - on the first drive out from the airport when you held his hand and hummed to the music, on that first morning when you were making pancakes, and even this morning as you laughed in his arms.
But he held out because he wanted it to be perfect. He wanted it grand but intimate, kind of like how he thinks the rest of your life together is going to be. And he has a feeling it’s what you’re thinking, too, as you look around and admire the grandeur of your surroundings, but out here, on top of the world, it’s just you and him.
I want to get on a mountain and scream to the world how much I love you, Jungkook told you not long ago. You smile at how he did just that, and you’re assured that whatever plans and dreams you’ll have together, he’ll do everything to make sure you’ll get there. And you know that so will you.
“This feels so us,” you say, as you pull him close and tiptoe to softly kiss his lips. “This is perfect.”
And Jungkook thinks that the pilot was right - with your content smile and glimmering eyes, the view is wonderful, and definitely worth it.
**
The trip is nearing its end and much as you want to just stay here, you also can’t wait to go back home to celebrate with your loved ones.
Right after yesterday’s engagement, you and Jungkook drove to a seaside town and did rounds of video calls with your best friends, Jin, Ina, and Namjoon, who all said they’ll be throwing you a not-so-surprise engagement party right when you get home. Mr. Sim and Mrs. Hwang sent messages; so did your parents and Jungkook’s mom.
You both spent the night at a nice restaurant and then enjoyed biscuits and hot chocolate at the outdoor tub. You fell asleep laying on Jungkook’s chest as you both talked about your wedding plans, your honeymoon, and your future house.
Earlier, you visited another town and did a quick hike to see a lake nestled in the mountains. You’re currently at the Observatory, laying on a mat as you stare up at the galaxy displayed right before your eyes. You’d seen the stars shine brightly during your entire stay here, but this one is different. It’s unbelievably clear and breathtakingly beautiful.
“It’s like the stars aligned for us, don’t you think?” You turn to Jungkook.
“You got reassigned, I had a crush on you, you rejected me a bunch of times…” you tease.
“Then I got shot and we got close because of the scariest thing that happened to both of us,” he continues, the incident still a vivid memory but one that you’re both able to talk about more openly now.
“How was that the scariest thing when you didn’t even like me then?” You cock an eyebrow.
“Well, thinking about it now, it actually was. If it was you who got hurt, then we wouldn’t be here. And not being with you is the scariest thing that could ever happen to me,” he explains.
“But now we get to be together for the rest of our lives,” you assure him.
“I promise I’ll always choose you, ___,” he says, turning towards you. “Even when I’m scared or worried or unsure. I’ll always choose you and fight for you and love you like it’s all I’ve ever known.”
“Starting your vow early?” You tease, but you wipe your tears as you do.
“I made this promise in my head that day I went after you in the ocean. I knew I had to become good enough to one day make this promise to you because I know I won’t break it. I can’t,” his voice cracks. “I know what it’s like to lose you, more than once, and I don’t ever want to feel that emptiness again.”
“You’ll never lose me, baby,” you kiss him. “And I promise I’ll always choose you. Even when I’m scared or worried or unsure. I’ll always choose you and fight for you and love you like it’s all I’ve ever known,” you repeat his words.
He cups your cheek then kisses you, smiling onto your lips and already feeling like a new man.
He looks back up at the sky, with you in his arms, thinking how precious life is - to be but a speck of dust in the universe but to feel as if this moment is infinite, like this moment will live on. In his mind, it always will.
It’s amazing, Jungkook thinks, how he’d spent much of his life trying to be someone that he would measure by wealth and success. But here he is, being reminded of his smallness as he stares at the galaxy. And here you are, looking at him like he’s the only one in this vast world who matters.

if she wants me - susie wolff x female oc
part 2: someone above is looking with a tender eye
Summary: Amelia forgets all about the job overseas she applied for, until she gets a phone call one day from a strange-looking phone number she doesn’t recognize.

Previous Chapter
A few days later, I noticed a missed call on my phone that came from a strange number - it didn’t look like any phone number I’d ever seen, with an odd country code. I was puzzled until I realized it was probably a Monaco number, and I called it back immediately. It was Sophie, and she had been calling to let me know to expect a formal offer letter in my email. I was speechless. My head felt like it was about to float away, and I could feel my pulse pounding in my ears as I tried listening to what she was telling me. She said that it would take a few weeks to sort out my work visa and permits, which was fine - it gave me time to tackle a to-do list that had suddenly grown gargantuan.
Over the next few weeks, I put in my notice with the university, hired a property management company to handle renting out my house (I didn’t want to sell it right away, just in case things didn’t end up working out overseas), decided what I wanted to take with me and sold or donated a lot of things I didn’t want or need any more. I kept the majority of my furniture, opting to rent my house out as a furnished rental, while I found a furnished rental flat in Nice, and arranged for some things to be shipped there. I bought a rail pass for the SNCF train that I would be riding for my commute to Monaco, and a SIM card for cell service and a French number. I brushed up on my French through an iPhone app, and thanked my lucky stars that I took French in college instead of German or Spanish. I turned in my car early, and the dealership was kind enough to waive the early termination fees for the lease. I opened a bank account with a French bank and exchanged some of my savings into Euros. I debated buying a bike, but decided that I could wait until I’d landed.
Just about the second I got confirmation that my visa was approved, I purchased my plane ticket - one-way. Detroit to Charles de Gaulle to Nice Côte d'Azur. A ten hour flight to an entirely new life. It felt strange. Emily and I had been to France before. We’d been to lots of places. I’d booked plenty of plane tickets, but I’d never envisioned myself booking a one-way ticket somewhere.
Speaking of Emily, I had initially decided not to tell her I was moving, but I decided for some reason that it was the right thing to do. So, the night before my flight was due to leave, I dialed her number - I’d deleted her from my phone’s contact list a while ago, but I still had her number memorized. I couldn’t bring myself to tap the green call button, though. I opted to just send her a quick text, mostly just to let her know that I would be out of the country for the foreseeable future, and left her a forwarding address in case she needed it for anything. I watched the indicator in my texts change from “Delivered” to “Read”, but she didn’t say anything. I guess I wasn’t really expecting a response, and I wasn’t sure if I was hoping for one, either.
I didn’t sleep at all the night before my flight. I was too nervous. I arrived at the airport several hours too early. I bought an iced coffee and a sandwich that I couldn’t bear to finish because my stomach was doing somersaults.
Once I was on the plane, I managed to relax a little. The sound of the plane engines and the darkness of the red-eye flight lulled me into a fitful sleep, and I woke up a couple of hours later over the Atlantic, already in a new time zone. It was a strange feeling, knowing that I was officially out of the US without knowing when I’d be back again, aside from the United States ePrix in the summer, when I’d be going to Brooklyn with the team. I certainly didn’t know when I’d be back in Michigan again.
I landed in Paris at 8 in the morning, but my body was still trapped at 2am. I was very glad that I would have a few days before I started at Venturi to adjust to the time change. I had only about an hour-long layover before my flight to Nice. From there, the hour-and-a-half long flight was uneventful. I took an Uber to my new apartment once I’d landed.
I hadn’t done too badly for not seeing the place other than pictures - it was a small, one-bedroom apartment. It was cute, comfortable, and not too far from the city center or the train station. The only thing I did once I’d arrived was unpack the package with the bedding I’d ordered, made the bed, and promptly collapsed.
When I woke up after about fifteen hours of deep sleep, I was disoriented. It took me a moment to remember where I was. “Oh yeah. I’m in France. I live here now.” I laid in bed while I checked my phone. I had only just switched over to my French SIM card when I had landed at Charles de Gaulle so it surprised me that I’d already had a text that wasn’t auto-generated.
It was from Susie. I remembered that I’d given the company my new French phone number when I got my new SIM card, and had told them when I’d be arriving, so maybe it shouldn’t have been a surprise.
Susie Wolff: Hi, Amelia! I just wanted to make sure you landed safely and welcome you to this side of the pond! If you need anything, or have any questions, don’t hesitate to let me know.
My face flushed involuntarily at seeing her name come up in my notifications, and I got that warm feeling in my chest again. It was something I’d have to get used to.
Maybe when I was working with her, even the sight of her name would make me stop feeling this way - the way my heart would skip a beat, the way my breath would catch in my chest, the way my face would burn. It already felt like torture, though the most pleasant kind of torture.
My eyes focused on the singular “me”, and “I” in the message. Business-related communications, in my experience, used “we” and “our”. Maybe I was reading too far into it.
I considered my response for a few moments.
Me: Thank you! My flight got in yesterday. It was good! I’m looking forward to getting out and exploring a little today.
I put my phone down and stared up at my ceiling, considering everything I had to do that day. I needed to unpack my suitcases and the things I’d ordered for my apartment. I needed to find my way to a grocery store and get some food for my kitchen. I needed to walk around and try and get familiar with my neighborhood, even though in my sleeplessness when the Uber pulled up to my door, all of the buildings looked the same. It was a beautiful neighborhood, rows of butter-yellow buildings with elegant features, but it was block after block of buildings that looked the same. I needed to figure out the trains so I could make it to work the next week.
Another incoming notification took me out of my reverie, and took me by surprise. Susie had sent me another message.
Susie Wolff: That’s great to hear! You’re living in Nice, right? I know you’re probably not familiar with the city yet, but do you know what neighborhood you’re in?
The open-ended questions confused me. I was sure she was just being polite, though.
Me: I think it’s the Musician’s Quarter. I’m a little bit south of the main train station, I think. I’m still trying to get my bearings. I’m near Rue Verdi and Rue Hérold.
Susie Wolff: Oh! I actually know of a good restaurant near there called Maison Joia, if you’re looking for somewhere to eat.
I punched the name of the restaurant into Apple Maps, but Susie had texted me again before I could get a look.
Susie Wolff: Speaking of food, I was wondering if you wanted to come to dinner this week before you start. It would be with me, Jerome, and and a few other people you’ll be working with. Just to get to know you a little better before you start. :)
Without thinking, I responded:
Me: That sounds wonderful! Just let me know when.
Susie Wolff: How about this Wednesday, maybe at 6? I can pick you up at your apartment, if you need. It’s not a long drive from Monaco to Nice.
I blanched at the idea of my boss picking me up at home to go to dinner at her house before we’d even formally met, in-person.
Me: Well, I’d actually like to take the train out to Monaco, just to get a chance to get familiar with it before work. But I don’t know anything about Monaco itself. Is your place far from the train station?
Susie Wolff: It’s a bit further than you might want to walk, so I will meet you at the station. I’m really excited to get to know you and to start working with you soon.
I smiled.
Me: Me too. I can’t wait.
I spent the next few days on an emotional rollercoaster. Experiencing everything from elation because my French was good enough to not have the woman at the neighborhood bakery roll her eyes and speak English to me by default, exhaustion from the last dregs of jet lag starting to wear off, and the frustration of finding the grocery store in my neighborhood being closed when I visited a few minutes after 6pm (“Why does everything here close so early?!”).
I managed to get my things unpacked, though, and my apartment was starting to look more homey. Not having as much space as I did in my house in Michigan was taking some getting used to, but I thought it suited me for now. My apartment was small, but comfortable, and the view out of my windows onto the street made me think I was living in a painting when the morning light came in just the right way. I’d also managed to buy a used bicycle, which I could bring on the train to work with me to ride around Monaco.
By the time Wednesday came around though, I was in a state of low-grade panic. I upended my freshly-arranged closet and dresser trying to figure out what to wear. Everything I tried on made me feel like I was underdressed or overdressed. I settled on a nice pair of jeans, ballet flats, and the nicest button-down blouse I had. The train station was a short walk from my apartment, and the train to Monaco left every half hour. I arrived a little early for the 5:21 train because I wanted to make sure I was at the right gate, and had the right time as I wasn’t used to looking at a schedule in 24hr time.
The idea of taking a train to work every day was a little strange, too. In Michigan, I commuted to work by bus every day, but there were only a few cities in the US that had train systems, and mine was not one of them.
Thankfully, I found my gate without issue and managed to board the right train (I checked with a conductor just to make sure). The route followed the coast, and I made sure to get a window seat.
I had thought the view out of my apartment was like a painting, but this - this looked like something that could only be imagined. It took a few minutes to get beyond the city, but the view of the sea left me in awe. I’d never seen anything like the color of the water and the sky, and the way the sun, starting to make its westward descent, glinted off of the rocky cliffs. Even the buildings in Nice, behind us, looked like they were all made of gold. There were innumerable sailboats at anchor in what the map on my phone told me was the Gulf of Saint-Hospice.
I’d traveled to a lot of places, but this was the first time I’d ever seen something like this. I was also struck by how verdant the greenery was, with palm trees interspersed with leafy trees and evergreens. I’d grown up near a lakeshore, my small town not far from Lake Michigan, and I always thought the beaches and dunes at home were one of the most beautiful places in the world. But even those shores seemed cold and foreboding in comparison to this. Where Lake Michigan was a deep, dark blue, the water here was a gorgeous shade of teal. I could not believe that this would be the view of my daily commute.
The train passed through a few tunnels and into the Monaco-Monte Carlo station. It was a quick trip - not even a half an hour. I exited the train onto the platform and up the escalators, into the sunlight of the station lobby. I glanced around the busy station, feeling myself on the edge of being overwhelmed, but I spotted a familiar-looking blonde woman standing by the schedule boards. She was dressed in navy blue slacks and a matching shirt, with a teal wrap top over it that was the same color as the sea. She looked effortlessly elegant, even though she’d undoubtedly had just come from work. Her face changed to one of recognition as we caught each others’ eyes as I approached.
“Susie?”
I smiled and stuck out my hand for a handshake, which she accepted. “Yes, hi! So nice to finally meet you, Amelia! I’m glad you made it. Bienvenue à Monaco!”
“Ah, merci”, I said. “I can’t believe I’m here.”
She touched my shoulder and said, “I’ve parked in the garage, this way.” and led the way to the parking garage, to some sort of obviously high-end Mercedes. She opened the passenger-side door for me, and I climbed in, struck by the fact that I was now in what was probably the nicest car I’d ever been in. With my boss. We chatted amicably as she pulled out of the garage into the street, but I was a little distracted by the alien world we’d driven out into.
Monaco was unlike anything I’d ever seen. It seemed to be built right into the surrounding cliffside, building after building seeming to sit on top of one another, almost. The buildings were unbelievably close to the narrow, busy streets, with Susie navigated with ease. I was trying to take in everything we were passing, but everything seemed to catch my eye. She must have noticed that I’d gone a bit quiet, eyes fixed out the window.
“It’s a lot to take in, isn’t it?”
I turned my head to look at her.
“Yes… I guess I’m just more used to… everything’s so… close here. And it’s so busy. I don’t think I’ve been anywhere quite like it.”
“I thought the same thing when I came here the first time. You’ll get used to it, don’t worry.”
She pointed out different landmarks and districts as we drove along, and pointed out the fencing that goes up during “Grand Prix season” that forms the boundaries of the Circuit de Monaco.
Finally, we’d arrived at a short gray apartment block somewhere on the east side of the principality. She mentioned that many current F1 and FE drivers lived nearby, and a lot of former F1 drivers as well.
She pulled the car into a parking garage, a beep activating the automatic doors, and parked in a reserved space. I felt a little awkward as I followed her into the building and into the most elegant elevator I’d ever seen. I detected a bit of a theme with this journey so far, and felt the creep of imposter syndrome coming in. What was I doing in a place like this? Was this a dream?
“Here we are,” she said, interrupting my thoughts. The elevator opened and we stepped into the hallway, and then into the door of her apartment - though “condo” was probably a more apt description. From the entryway, I could see that it was large and stylishly appointed - all clean, minimalist lines of white and gray, with touches of teal and blue. I noticed other shoes at the entryway and toed mine off.
“Hello! I’m home! And I’ve brought company!” Susie called to the inside of the condo, and a man stuck his head out of what I assumed to be the kitchen. It was Toto.
“Hello! Hello, welcome! Please, come in, make yourself comfortable.” He said, with a smile. “Dinner will be ready soon.” He hugged and kissed his wife in greeting, and turned to me. I had to crane my neck to meet his eyes as he offered me his hand for a handshake - I was not expecting him to be so tall. “I’m Toto, Susie’s husband. You must be Amelia. I’m so glad you’re here!” Now I heard where the odd vowels in Susie’s accent came from.
“Yes, I am,” I said. “It’s nice to meet you, Mr. Wo - uh, Toto.”
Susie touched my shoulder again - something else I would have to get used to, I suppose - and led me into the living room, gesturing at the sofa and chairs. “Please, make yourself at home. Did you want anything to drink?”
“I’ll… uh, just some water?” I said, trying not to seem like I was as out of my element as I felt.
“Sure, did you want sparkling or still?”
“Uh…” I was not expecting to have a choice. “Sparkling?”
Another man came out of the kitchen, who I recognized as Jerome, and a woman I did not recognize. They must have been chatting with Toto while Susie was fetching me from the train station. More handshakes, more greetings, more “glad you’re here” and “so nice to meet you”. The woman’s name was Delphine, and she was the team manager. She was an elegant woman with a French accent. I was feeling admittedly a little disarmed by how friendly everyone was so far. It wasn’t that I’d expected them to be cold or anything, but I was acutely aware that I was now working in an entirely different culture and social strata than I was used to. It all still felt very alien.
“We’re just waiting on Vincent, he’s the other system engineer that you’ll be working with. And I hope you like pasta,” Susie said. “Neither Toto or I are very handy in the kitchen, honestly, but we ordered from a place nearby that makes a dish we love, and it’s traditional Monaco cuisine, so I thought that would be good for your first meal here .”
“Who doesn’t like pasta,” I said. Almost as if on cue, there was a knock at the door, and another man walked in. “This must be Vincent,” I thought. It was. He also had a French accent, and said that he was excited to be working with me, that he’d seen my CV and was impressed. I thanked him, but still felt like he was saying it to be polite.
At last, dinner was plated and on the table. It was a delicious spread - plenty of gnocchi with a buttery sauce with a side of fresh shellfish, a fresh green salad, and some sort of savory pastry called “barbagiuan” that was apparently a Monegasque dish. It was a dough pocket that was fried to a golden crisp and filled with ricotta and some sort of green vegetable, which I was told was Swiss chard.
“These things look like something we have at home in Michigan, called a pasty." I said, putting some of the barbagiuan on my plate. "I think they’re originally Cornish but they got popular because of the copper and iron mining boom a long time ago, but they’re still popular, especially with tourists. They’re hearty, good in the cold months. I haven't had one in years, though.”
There was also plenty of white wine. Susie poured me a glass and I took a generous sip - it was delicious, something likely more expensive than I was used to, but I was happy for a little bit of liquid courage. Not too much, though - first impressions were everything, after all.
Most of the conversation during dinner was asking me questions, which I supposed that I was not surprised by, given that everyone else knew or worked with each other already, and I was the newcomer. They asked me questions about Michigan - (“Oh, the Motor City! Did you live in Detroit?” “No, about an hour away.” “It’s very cold there in the winter, isn’t it?” “Yes, and hot and humid during the summer.”) If I liked racing (“No, my parents were NASCAR fans but I couldn’t ever get into it, Formula E and Formula 1 look more exciting, at least it’s not all in a loop.”), if I watched other sports, (“Hockey, mostly, it’s hard to not be a hockey fan in Michigan.” and “No, I don’t really watch American football, I never understood it.”) and about my family. (“No, I have a pretty small family and no siblings, and we’re not super close.”)
“So,” Toto said at one point, “Are you married?” I knew he was just trying to make small talk or get to know me, but I had been dreading someone asking. It was still too close to the bone because of the divorce, and while I figured it was probably okay to be open about my sexuality in this company, one could never be sure.
But, it was probably good that it came up then. I figured that I may as well get it out of the way before I was too far in. Plus, I could feel the wine starting to work its magic in loosening my lips.
“Actually, no… my wife, ex-wife I guess, and my divorce was just finalized a few weeks before I left.”
I looked around at everyone’s face, studying carefully for any sign of derision or disgust at my mention of “my wife”. It sometimes did happen, even in 2022, even in a liberal university town - you’d see someone’s face change and then the tension in the room would rise, and they’d look at you like some freak of nature. Things would get uncomfortable and they’d try to exit the conversation as quickly as possible, and that’s if you were lucky. There were worse alternatives that I couldn’t even bring myself to consider. Just about every gay person learned at some point that coming out was never a singular act - in a world where being straight is default, you came out every time you talked to someone new.
Thankfully, everyone’s expression was either neutral, or sympathetic.
Toto just said, “Oh, that’s too bad, I’m sorry to hear that. It’s certainly not easy.”
“Thank you,” I said. “But, I’m on a new adventure now, so I’m happy with that.”
“Speaking of which,” Susie said. “I did want to ask how you found the posting for the job. Not that we’re not thrilled to have you, but we don’t get many applicants from the US or outside of motorsport.”
“Oh!” I said. “The administrator for my old department, at the university, has an aunt that is from Scotland, and went to school with you, or something? I’m sorry, I don’t recall what her name is, but her niece is named Laura. Anyway, Laura saw her aunt share the posting on Facebook or something and sent it to me.”
“Huh,” Susie said. “What a small world. I need to figure out who that was so I can thank her for connecting us with you.”
I blushed, but I wasn’t sure if it wasn’t from the indirect compliment or from the wine.
The rest of the evening went well. I really liked my future coworkers, and Toto and Susie were incredibly kind and generous hosts. I did not see their son, but they mentioned he was in the UK with his grandparents at the moment, as it was the start of his school vacation.
Susie drove me back to the train station, parking and walking me all the way to the escalators that led down to the platforms, “Just so you don’t get turned around.”
“Thank you for having me tonight, really. It was so nice to get to meet some more people from work. I’m really excited to start”, I said, as we were standing at the entrance to the escalators.
To my surprise, she pulled me into a hug. “I know I keep saying it, but I’m really happy you’re here. I think you’re going to be a great fit with us.”
She released me from the hug, but one of her hands remained on my shoulder. “If you need anything between now and Monday, please let me know. I’ll be out of town tomorrow until Sunday evening, but I’ll find someone that can help with whatever you need.”
“I should be okay,” I said. “Like I said earlier, it’s all a lot to take in.”
“New adventures, right?” She said, giving my shoulder a parting squeeze. “Have a good night, and text me when you get home so I know you made it okay.”
There it was again - that squeezing, warm feeling in my chest, that fluttering in my stomach. It lasted my entire train ride home. I felt like I was floating when I was walking from the train station to my flat.
I texted her as instructed - “Made it home safe. Had a great night. Thanks again for such a warm welcome.”
I stared at my phone and saw the read receipt change from “Delivered” to “Read”. Then, a reply.
Susie Wolff: Glad to hear it. Can’t wait for Monday x.

Staying in Ho Chi Minh City District 4 : Tips for Air Bnb Guests
Let’s face it, during your first tip to Saigon, You don’t know anything about the different districts of Ho Chi Minh City. Now it’s up to you to pick the best spot for your family to stay during your vacation to Ho Chi Minh City! The pressure is on! I’m gonna give you some information about District 4 compared to District 1 to help you make a decision if an Air Bnb in District 4 is a good option for your family.
How does Ho Chi Minh City’s District 4 compare to District 1? They are very different but District 4 is so close to District 1 that it makes sense to stay here if you are travelling. I’m going to go over some of the questions you might have if you choose to stay in District 4 rather than District 1.
Should I stay in D4 instead of D1?
This all depends on what you are looking for. In my opinion, if you are planning to spend most of your time outside of your hotel, I would have no problem staying at one of the accommodation options in District 4. It is an easy hop in a taxi cab to get right into the thick of things in the middle of District 1.
If you are looking for an apartment style stay that has a swimming pool, the accommodation options in D4 are pretty sound. The location is good if you are okay with jumping in a taxi cab ride when you want to go out. If you decide to walk around, you’ll be in for a real experience of a local area of Ho Chi Minh City. Honestly, this isn’t the right location to stay in if you want to leave your hotel and walk right outside to find a restaurant that is suitable for younger kids or western food.
District 4 Information
Over Thirty years ago, district 4 was often known for its low level of security and gangsters. However, thanks to improving management by government and gentrification, today District 4 is a pleasant place. It hasn’t been known as a dangerous area since the 70’s.
Due to its location, District 4 has become a coveted area for people to live and work. This makes the property value for homes in District 4 extremely high. Many of the families who still live in this district now have been living in these houses for decades. The small houses that we refer to as tube houses because of their narrow width but tall height are tightly packed in, creating a web of small alleyways that are very interesting.
In recent years, due to the influence of other nearby districts like District 1 and District 2, District 4 has gradually developed. Many new apartments were built here, streets were improved and repaired, entertainment areas also began to appear. This not only makes local people’s lives better but also creates convenience and comfort for tourists when visiting District 4.
District 4 Location Compared to District 1
District 4 is likened to a triangular island located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. It is surrounded by rivers and canals and stuck among 3 other developed districts: District 1 (in the Northwest), District 7 (in the Northeast) and District 2 (in the South).
This means that District 4 is very close to District 1, people here usually only take 10 minutes to reach famous places in District 1. To get to District 1 from District 4, you need to cross a Ben Nghe canal. There are 5 bridges built to cross this canal such as Khanh Hoi bridge, Calmette bridge, Ong Lanh bridge, Rainbow bridge, and Nguyen Van Cu bridge. Depending on your location, you can choose the closest bridge to shorten the time to reach District 1.
Hotels or Airbnb?
Honestly, District 4 doesn't have many hotels like District 1. So sometimes on holiday, hotels in District 4 often run out of rooms. Therefore, if you want to stay at a hotel to enjoy high-class service, you should book a room advanced.
Although not owning many famous hotels like District 1, however, District 4 has a lot of room rental services which local people open by themselves. To be able to find out more information about these rental rooms, you can easily find it on Airbnb’s website.
Normally, both hotels and room rental services will be in the newly constructed apartments right across from the canal. This means you are very close to the center of the city for a bit cheaper price. The area to wander about from these large apartments is actually interesting. Just behind these large apartments you can wander into Xom Chieu market for a visit during the day to see one of the most local and busiest wet markets in Ho Chi Minh City.
Transportation in District 4
District 1’s location for walking to some of the main attractions in Ho Chi Minh City is better than District 4. District 4 is about a 10-minute walk plus a bridge crossing in order to get to Nguyen Hue walking street in the center of the city. The walk might be a little bit difficult but interesting. While walking across these bridges, you can watch the canal flowing through the city and take some nice photos. The bridges at night will shine by the beautiful street lights, which is one of the typical beauties of this city.
If you are going for a night out and a bit dressed up, you’ll probably want to call a taxi or grab to give you a lift. I don’t think District 4’s location is convenient for making a lot of trips back and forth to the city center on foot but its very close if you are using a taxi cab. Check out our in depth article about about taxi cabs in Ho Chi Minh City to
Another thing about transportation in District 4 you should know is heavy traffic jams at rush hour. Because the roads in District 4 are quite small and narrow, so during peak hours these roads often occur more serious traffic jams than other districts. My university is located in District 4, every afternoon after school, it takes me about 45 minutes to 1 hour to get home. If you choose to use a taxi or grab to take you around, don't choose rush hours to go out.
Walking around District 4
If district 1 is famous for high-class and luxury restaurants, the cuisine of district 4 is famous for being found in plenty with delicious options. There are so many people living, working, and visiting District 4 that the local street food is fantastic and famous. You can find street foods in food carts, food stalls or small private restaurants open by locals. Food stalls and restaurants are usually located along many streets in District 4, which makes district 4 is so famous for many food streets. The three most famous food streets that I want to recommend to you are Xom Chieu, Vinh Khanh and Ton Dan.
Xom Chieu has special and delicious dishes. The food stalls and restaurants in this street have existed for a long time and have created a famous reputation. That makes them attract many people coming and trying the taste of special foods. These dishes which are cooked with unique recipes seem to be “specialties” of this district. Some "specialties" on Xom Chieu street I want you to know are banana cooked with sugar, crab soup mixed vegetables and many other types of ingredients, mussel noodles.

In 2018, Vinh Khanh street officially became the food street of District 4 and is strictly managed on food safety and hygiene by the government. Up to now, it has been extremely famous not only to locals but also for foreign visitors. Most of the restaurants here serve seafood and beer. Plates of seafood here are cooked in Vietnamese-style but a little bit spicier than normal Vietnamese food. Famous dishes like snails cooked with coconut milk, fried crab with salt and chili, grilled octopus with sate can be found up and down Vinh Khanh Street. If you are a person who loves seafood, Vinh Khanh is definitely a great choice for you. The operating hours of Vinh Khanh street are from afternoon to evening. The restaurants here are crowded at 6:00 pm until Midnight. Make sure that you are there at the right time so you can enjoy the bustling atmosphere of this food street and delicious dishes. If you want to experience street food like this but are a bit nervous to do it yourself,
- Chilli hotpot
Alot of grilled meat options, oysters, and hotpot. Delcious and Highly recommended

First Week in Town
Let’s start with our airbnb - Pajaro De Fuego Condominiums at 160 Av Del Palmar. We reserved a nice and spacious 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom with an oceanview. Av Del Palmar is the road parallel to the beach, so we were not far from the beach at all. We had room service come and clean every day, soft bed mattress which was nice because I had started to get hip pain when sleeping on my side. We had plenty of pillows since we could steal all of the pillows from Summer’s room. Full kitchen, spacious modern shower. Decent sized living room and a two balconies. Modern stove which was nice for cooking. Overall a very comfortable space.
The downside was that it was a good walk from town, manageable but definitely a good walk. To enter the condo was a steep hill followed by more uphill ramps to get to the pool, another steep ramp past the pool and then 78 stairs up to our room on the 7th floor. There were no elevators. Well, the elevators were in place but last winter as they were being put in, there was a rain storm which messed up the entire system so no elevators for us. We took a positive outlook on this-- wow, we are going to have nice butt’s after our stay here! But by the end of the 13 days, I was SO happy to never ever ever walk up those ramps and stairs again. And to this day, there is not one part of that place that I miss. The other reason is because everything about that space, besides the inside of our room itself was a safety hazard. The balconies were not child proofed, there were steep drop offs at every turn. Matt would not let Summer even walk on the grounds. At all. Period. So it was a lot of carrying and toting her around with no outdoor refuge besides the playground (an amazing space, we’ll get to that later) or the beach. The beach nearest to our home had huge waves with a constant rip current so it really wasn’t that relaxing to take her there either.
On our first night, December 13, 2020, we unpacked, got settled and then went first thing to check out the beach. We had originally brought the wagon for Rowley but the three tires on our bob stroller were flat, so we decided to throw Summer in the wagon and wheel her to the beach. This was an amazing discovery. She LOVES the wagon. She sings the entire ride. Her favorite song is Frere Jaques due to the french nursery rhyme book we bought her!
At the entrance to the beach is an outdoor bar called Las Sirenas and this Sunday evening, there was some partying going on. We ended up meeting an older lady (50′s) named Christine. She is a writer from the states who moved to MX 6 years ago. She’s a beautiful, vibrant, redhead and we enjoyed chatting with her. 2 days later we realize she is our neighbor. Literally. We are room 702 and she is 703. She is a permanent resident and wow, it was so nice to have her next door. We used her laundry, she cooked us a home made dish, let us borrow knives, and when Matt got sick gave us vitamins, supplements, and loose leaf healing tea. We haven’t seen or talked to her since we moved out but we hope to see her soon!
This first week was heavenly. Matt was overjoyed to be in this beautiful place, the weather was warm, there were no lockdowns, no masks, just positive, beautiful souls enjoying what life has to offer. Matt met another family on the beach while I was having some spa services done. Turns out they are the owners of Archive Rentals, an event rental company HQ’d in OC. Being a wedding planner, I am very familiar with this company and have tried to recommend them to my brides, but unfortunately they are still a bit too pricey for my clients. They have a daughter Summer’s age and an older son. Summer absolutely loved playing with Roux and Rowan. Matt and Ryan spent the day surfing. I only briefly got to meet the family while they were breakfasting at Don Bonito and I randomly stopped by to see if Don Bonito could break my 100 dollar bill so I could head to the pharmacy to get Matt some tylenol. (Turns out Victoria, who works every day at Don Bonito, is our neighbor in our new place!) We hope they head back to Sayulita while we are still here! It was nice to connect with like minded people.
We experienced the heavenly joy of $20 hour long massages on the beach, eating cocos frio (fresh coconut water) on the beach. Then taking the coconut back for the guy to chop and scoop the meat to enjoy as a snack. We discovered the local playground and met all the local vendors mexican children. We discovered The Carniceria aka the butcher. We order Carne Asada, he fills the bag, heads back to his dead carcass, slices more fresh carne asada and adds to our bag. It was amazing. As fresh as fresh can get. We cooked a lot this first week.
Breakfast was a chorizo, potato, egg scramble with hot sauce and avocado. Lunch and/or dinner was carne asada tacos with frijoles, queso, avo, hot sauce or a carne asada plate for Matt.
They have Tortilleria’s here in town where they make fresh tortillas. It’s truly amazing. Everything is fresh. From the fish they catch, the chickens running around town laying eggs. We are truly eating off the land.
There was a lady named Vera. @vera_mexico on instagram who designs and sells beautiful shirts. I bought one from her and am so excited to wear it once I am no longer pregnant. She had a golf cart and would hang her items on the cart. Beautiful gowns, shirts, hats, purses, earrings. All handmade in mexico.
This whole first week Matt had decided he wanted to stay in Sayulita indefinitely, to have the baby down here, to buy property down here, etc. We are currently in our third week and do have indefinite lodging but are not sure how long we will stay, after all. I am trying to stay in the present, enjoy the adventure, and not think too much about what the plan is.

Voit’s Q4 2019 OC Office Market Report & 2020 Forecast – Just Released!
New Decade. Same Cycle.
2019 was another good year for the OC office market. A diversified, well-educated employment base continues to keep the office market on firm footing. Consistent demand has kept lease rates and sale prices on an upward trend notwithstanding the significant spike in speculative office development over the past two years. This year technology tenants are expected to dominate leasing, which isn’t surprising because they accounted for 22% of the activity through the first half of 2019. Interest in flexible office space will continue to grow, but at a much slower pace thanks to the recently botched WeWork IPO. Political activity continues to impact the overall CRE outlook. The House has passed the USMCA (NAFTA 2.0) and it is expected to be signed into law in January. Many believe the new law will strengthen U.S. trade with Canada and Mexico. Tax incentives for energy-efficient commercial buildings have been extended, allowing owners to claim a deduction of up to $1.80 /SF for qualifying systems. Of great concern going forward is the California Schools and Local Communities Funding Act, which will likely be on the ballot in November. This controversial initiative would remove Prop 13 protection for most commercial properties. Beginning with the 2021–22 tax year, commercial property would be subject to periodic reassessment to full market value even if it does not change hands. Tenants subject to operating expense pass-through could be forced to absorb huge tax increases, while investors who cannot pass those increases along would see a decline in property values due to lower NOI. Looking ahead, I’m keeping an eye on these key market drivers: #1: Interest rates will remain low. The Fed’s three rate cuts in 2019 made clear its intentions to avoid recession. We expect interest rates to remain stable going forward, which makes 2020 a good year to acquire or refinance office properties. #2: The creative and progressive design trends that have dominated the OC office market since 2015 will continue. The latest iteration is the “outdoor” office and developers have taken note. Employees, predominantly millennials and Gen Z, expect an excellent experience at work, which means spaces with high levels of choice, variety and balance. #3: The alternative investment sector of CRE will remain strong. Data center, self-storage and medical office activity has doubled since 2008, making up approximately 12% of all CRE activity. As this trend continues, expect to see adaptive reuse projects growing in popularity. Old factories, mills, schools, vacant retail boxes and more are being converted into flex space and residential housing. Programs like Opportunity Zones or the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit will further support those efforts. Barring a catastrophic economic disturbance, 2020 should be another solid year for Orange County’s economy and commercial real estate market.
OC Office Market Overview
The OC office market has stabilized into a relatively strong and stable position. Vacancy remains manageable, but has ticked up slightly in the past year. Technology, Financial Services, and Health Services firms have driven a significant amount of recent leasing activity. However, expanding companies are leveraging new workplace technologies to save money by increasing the number of employees for each square foot of space they lease, and that has had an impact on overall absorption and transaction velocity. Tenants in Class A and B buildings who leased space early in the recovery cycle are getting sticker shock at renewal time, as rent growth, which has moderated in recent quarters, is up substantially over the past 5 years. To mitigate higher per square foot occupancy costs, many tenants are moving down in building class and taking less space by switching to more open workspace designs. The market has seen modest levels of supply additions in recent years compared with previous development cycles, but several of the Class A projects delivered over the past two years are leasing up more slowly than expected. Net absorption, though still in positive territory, has been softening over the past several years. Capital market conditions remain solid, and while sales volume is down from its record level back in 2016 and 2017, it remains robust. Cap rates remain at or near historical lows, especially for high quality Class A and B assets. Vacancy Rates Nearly 1.39M SF of space has been delivered in the OC office market since Q1 2019, expanding the office base by 1.2%. This has contributed to the uptick in overall vacancy. Direct / sublease space (unoccupied) finished the quarter at 11.44%, up 48 basis point year-over-year. North Orange County posted the lowest vacancy rate at 7.17%, while the Airport Area and Central County had vacancy rates greater than 12% at the end of fourth quarter. Higher vacancy in the Airport Area is mainly due to its concentration of new deliveries still in the initial lease-up phase. Lease Rates Rent growth in the OC office market leveled off in 2019. The average asking lease rate in Orange County rose by just 0.37% over the past year compared with 1.7% nationwide. The average asking FSG monthly asking lease rate lost $0.09 in the fourth quarter, ending the period at $2.74. The average quoted rental rate for Class A space was $3.10 per square foot, compared with the Class B asking rate of $2.47 per square foot. Transaction Activity Slow growth in the region’s labor force has resulted in hiring challenges for many firms, and that may be impacting transaction velocity. Orange County’s labor market remains historically tight, with the unemployment rate holding at 2.5%. The total square feet leased and sold in the fourth quarter was approximately 3.4M SF, a significant slowdown from the 5.0M SF of transactions in the fourth quarter of 2018. Downsizing into more open workspace to increase headcount and appeal to younger workers is also a factor. Employment The unemployment rate in the OC office market was 2.5% in November 2019, unchanged from a revised 2.5% in October, and below the year-ago estimate of 2.7%. This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 3.7% for California and 3.3% for the nation during the same period. Local job growth was evident across all subsectors but financial services (up 1,200 jobs) and Government (up 2,200 jobs) led the way as the year ended. Construction Total space under construction in the OC office market ended the year at 795,177 square feet. In Costa Mesa, construction is underway at The Press located at 1375 Sunflower Drive. This former L.A. Times printing facility is being converted into more than 300,000 square feet of creative office space to accommodate the shift in demand from businesses looking to recruit and retain a younger workforce. The Source, located in the Irvine Spectrum, offers a two-building concept with common atrium connectivity and more than 70,000 total square feet of rentable space. Irvine Company’s build-to-suit for Alteryx Inc. at Spectrum Terrace 2 is also in the works. The company will occupy the bulk of the project’s 340,000 square foot second phase. The first phase is fully leased. Absorption Co-working tenants like WeWork have leased millions of square over the past few years and the current slowdown in that sector is partly responsible for the recent decline in new transaction velocity. Orange County office occupancy grew by 167,588 square feet in the final quarter, bringing the year-to-date gain in occupied space up to 707,160 square feet. The Airport Area submarket accounted for 260,089 square feet of that total. By product type, Class A office led the way with a net gain of 314,790 square feet in just the fourth quarter. Notable transactions included: Avanir Pharmaceuticals (103,879 square feet in Aliso Viejo), County of Orange Assessor (69,151 square feet in Orange), and WeWork (71,076 square feet in Irvine). FORECAST: Lease Rates Rent growth may pick up again as the absorption of the remaining first generation space gets leased up. With fewer attractive alternatives in the market, rent growth should return to an annualized rate of 2–3% over the course of the year. Vacancy Rates We anticipate that the overall vacancy rate will remain in the 11–12% range over the next three quarters, but the Class A sector will run somewhat higher due to its higher concentration of first generation space. Overall Signs of a global economic slowdown, concerns over US-China trade relations and a decline in the US GDP growth rate motivated the Fed to cut its benchmark Federal Funds Rate 3 times in 2019. That effort to stimulate consumer spending and business investment seems to be working. Equity markets responded by rising to new highs and the spread between short- and long-term US Treasuries widened again after a dangerous inversion earlier in the year. The latest estimates for domestic GDP growth for 2020 are running in the low 2% range, which should be enough to keep the current economic recovery on track. Disastrous [pt.5]
Chapters: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8
Genre: fluff, comedy, romcom
Main Characters: Kim Namjoon; Gu Dasom (OC)
Setting: holiday AU; friends to lovers AU
I knew that this holiday will be difficult with Namjoon by my side but I never thought that it would be this difficult.
An arranged holiday with my best friend to a breath-taking island? What could actually go wrong? In my case, the question is, what didn’t go wrong?
Hoping for something that might happen but it never actually does is the worst feeling in the world. Believe me, I’ve experienced this feeling several times during our holiday. Let’s just say that I’m an expert at the field of disasters.
Our second day in Haikou was merely a waste of time. It was Namjoon’s fault and even though I could have expected that he would forget about something, I prayed that he wouldn’t be characteristically oblivious. I was dead wrong.
After our breakfast, we headed to the city centre. First, we bought bus tickets because the public transportation was cheaper than renting a car and we had already used our money which we saved up for the car rental, so we decided to hop on a bus.
“So today, we will visit the Temple of Five Lords, Hairui’s Tomb and Qilou Old Street. Maybe we can have lunch there. They say there are plenty of shops and restaurants on that street,” I said while looking at the map and trying to find out at which stop should we hop off.
Namjoon and I, we sat down at a love-seat and chatted about our plans for today. He usually just nodded or asked basic questions because I was the one who organised everything, so I knew what was ahead of us. Yet, I have to admit that he was pretty helpful at times. He was more sensible and intelligent than me, so whenever I couldn’t read the map or read it upside-down, he was the one who managed to carry on navigating. I let my eyes wander at his solemn silhouette and blondish curls which were illuminated by the dusty-yellow sunlight. He was glowing like an angel and although he wasn’t the most handsome man on Earth, he was pretty attractive.
“Dasom!” he rose his voice higher when he noticed that I wasn’t listening to him. I immediately looked away, biting my lower lip in embarrassment because I didn’t think that he would pick up on my silence. Nonetheless, I caught sight of a smug grin forming on his rosy-coloured lips and felt a chill creeping up my neck.
“Yeah?”
“The next stop is where we should get off,” he tilted his head but the smirk was still evident on his face. He was surely amused by the situation and I didn’t know why but I wasn’t ashamed of what I’d done. Neither was he, I guess.
We hopped off at our stop and soon joined a busy crowd towards our first attraction - the Wugong Temple. I was quite sure how we should get there but I still held the map in my hand like it was our last chance to find the sight. The Wugong Temple - or the Temple of Five Lords as people called it - was a place known for its sense of peace, tranquillity and beauty. Inside the architectural complex, there was an ancestral hall, three memorial temples, a watching crop hall, a studying hall and a museum about the history of the Hainan Province. It might have sounded a bit boring for some people but we were both interested in history, especially the dynasties in China, so it was the first place which we agreed on visiting.
We were walking towards the entrance door but there was already a queue, so we had to wait for 15 minutes before we could purchase our tickets. To be precise, before we wanted to purchase our tickets.
“Give me my wallet!” I turned to Namjoon who brought his backpack with him, so I had already asked him on the bus to put my wallet in his bag. When I saw that he didn’t have his backpack, the realization made my heart leap.
“Where is it?” he turned around to look for it but he couldn’t have left it on the way here. “I still had it when we were on the bus, so it−“
“It’s on the bus,” I bawled in horror and couldn’t even imagine what could happen to us if we lost the backpack forever. Both our wallets and documents were in there! Right now, we didn’t have any money, nor our passports or anything like that. What if we wouldn’t get it on time? What if someone would steal it before we found it? Oh my god!
These were the dreary thoughts that nestled into my mind while we were running back to the bus stop but of course, the bus was already gone. My heart was beating like a drum and I suddenly felt so pathetic that I just wanted to sit on the ground and cry. This was the worst that could happen to us.
“What should we do now?” I flung my arms in the air, trying to recover from the shock. I saw a slight twinkle in Namjoon’s eyes, so I bet that he wasn’t as despondent as me but it made me even madder. He left the bag on the bus, he should have been the one who freaked out!
“Okay, first of all, we should try dialling the service support and then the Korean Embassy if they don’t know anything about our backpack,” he squinted at me, his eyes full of affection and worry. I didn’t let myself fall for his cute puppy eyes. I didn’t care if I hurt his feelings when I furiously ordered him to call them himself.
He phoned the service support first and luckily, they said that they found our stuff but the exact same bus wouldn’t come back – only during the night shift −, so we had two options. One: we would wait for the bus to come with our bag, which meant that we had to wait for 8 freaking hours! Two: we could walk back to the Hainan bus station where they would keep it until we got there. I almost cried out in annoyance when they mentioned that the bus station was 10 kilometres from there. Which meant that without money and food and water, we had to walk to the bus station on our own in this outrageous, humid weather.
Namjoon was still on the phone but asked for some time to decide which option we would prefer more.
“I don’t prefer either of them!” I yelled at him, not caring about the passer-by who jumped in surprise by my sudden outbreak. “If you hadn’t left it on the bus, we wouldn’t have gotten ourselves into a situation like this! I thought that nothing can go wrong after all the calamity until now but it’s the worst of all. We have no food, no water, no money and you want me to stay here for 8 hours or walk to the station in this boiling hot weather! Oh no, Namjoon!” I shook my head vigorously. “Ask them to bring the backpack with the next bus!” I practically screamed at him by then while gloom was consuming my whole body. I was never so frustrated in my whole life because I wasn’t the one who made a mistake but I still had to bear the consequences. It wasn’t fair and his pleading expression didn’t help at all.
“They say that they can’t,” he countered with a bitter smile creeping onto his face. His eyes were like rainy clouds; so grievous and silver-like. “There are hundreds of lost properties every day and they can’t send them all back.”
“Why not? It’s a bus service we are talking about!”
“They can’t, Dasom,” he repeated patiently. “We have to choose!”
Honestly, I would have chosen to stay and wait but that would be more nerve-wrecking and 8 hours with my best friend seemed unbearable after this little incident. For that reason, I decided to walk and Namjoon didn’t go against my will, so after he ended his phone call, we started walking back to the bus station.
I was fuming inside. I felt like a giant volcano; it was just a matter of time before I erupted and destroyed everything around me. I was so wrathful and the worst of all was the fact that I was angry at my best friend! The person who I was the closest to and who meant the world to me. I knew that he didn’t mean to hurt me by leaving the bag on the bus but he still dug a hole for the two of us.
Namjoon must have sensed my sudden hostility because he didn’t say a single word for an hour. I was holding the map sternly, trying to find the shortest way to reach our destination and went so confidently that he didn’t even dare to doubt my steps. I found solace in the silence that fell between us but I soon realised that it was more terrifying than reassuring, so I felt a need to say something. I wanted to talk to him but I also wanted be alone. I wanted to argue with him and be in his arms again. Gosh, it’s so difficult when you’re mad at your best friend!
Out of the blue, he was the first to break the uncomfortable silence.
“I’m sorry, Dasom.”
His voice was laced with anguish and eyes full of fragile remorse. I knew that he meant it. He followed me for the past hour, not asking a single question, not correcting me when I walked in the wrong direction, so I knew that he meant it. My heart sunk right away.
“I know,” I nodded to make sure that he was also aware of it but Namjoon continued on like I didn’t say anything.
“And I know that you’ve put a lot of effort into organising this holiday because you wanted it to be perfect. You’ve done it on your own and still asked my opinion about literally everything that you have arranged. I know how much you sought after that so-called holiday of a lifetime and I’m really sorry that not everything went as planned. It’s my fault that I’ve lost the backpack and I get why you are mad. I deserve your rage but I just want you to know that I didn’t do it to make you angry,” he shared his sorrowful monodrama with me and there was a glint of dismay in his silver-grey orbs while he was talking. It was like the storm; that sorrowful, heart-broken storm that came with weeping clouds, struggling wind and pearl-like raindrops. Anyone that saw him could easily pick up on his regret.
“I’m mad, Namjoon, but not because of you. I’m mad because this holiday is such a disaster,” I shook my head in disbelief. “As you said, I’ve planned everything and what did I get for my work? They messed up our tickets at the airport, the accommodation is far from convenient, my stomach couldn’t bear banana boat trips after having lunch, giant spiders are slowly inhabiting our room and now we have to walk to the bus station to get your backpack. Oh gosh, what did I do wrong?” I rubbed the back of my neck and hid my face in embarrassment. My inability to avoid occurring problems was seriously my greatest weakness.
“You didn’t do anything wrong,” he patted my back gently but it didn’t seem to help, so he made me come to a halt. He cupped my chin, forcing me to face him.
When I finally looked him in the eyes, I wasn’t afraid to show that I was devastated. He was my best friend, he could read me well. There was no point in lying to him.
“Life can change anytime but that’s the beauty of it. You can’t control it, you can’t stop the unstoppable. I believe that everything that had happened today actually happened for a reason, for example, to show that you can rely on your best friend, no matter. I’m always here for you, and even though I sometimes get both of us in trouble, at least I won’t go to jail alone,” he boasted one of his boyish smile and that was when he got me. I couldn’t suppress the urge to emulate his reaction.
“I wouldn’t let that happen,” I nudged his shoulder, a hopeful half-smile evident on my face. I felt the tenseness draining from my body and I have to admit that it was a pretty wonderful feeling.
“That’s my girl,” he winked at me playfully and suddenly those hours that we had to spend together didn’t seem so uncomfortable anymore.

Alan & Twila True request $60 million on Newport’s Harbor Island
It was a beautiful sunny Friday here in Southern California — a perfect time to embark on a weekend getaway. Wouldn’t a peaceful island destination be just the thing?
Unfortunately, Hawaii and the Caribbean are much too far for a quick trip, but Yolanda’s got the perfect remedy — right here in SoCal! Down behind the Orange Curtain, just off the coast of Newport Beach, lies one of the most expensive (and exclusive) islands on the whole dang globe. Welcome to Harbor Island.
The small and semi-artificial island was formed about 100 years ago and is connected to the mainland by a 24/7 guard-gated bridge. This high-security land mass has some of the most exclusive and desirable residential real estate in the OC — there are fewer than 30 homes on the island, many of which sport killer views over Newport Harbor. Thus, this wee slice of paradise has attracted many of the OC’s wealthiest peeps. Residents have included billionaires like Bill Gross, Donald Bren and George Argyros.
Today we shall discuss the largest, most lavish and by far most (in)famous home there — a hulking beast at the island’s tip. Astute real estate watchers may know the property is currently listed with a fat $60 million pricetag. ($59,995,000, to be precise.) Should the house sell for anywhere close to that number, it will rank as the most ever paid for an Orange County home — besting the $55 million that auto dealership magnate Larry Van Tuyl paid for his historic Newport compound back in 2017.
But despite the sunny skies, crisp sea air and sparkling aquamarine water that surround it, the landmark manor has a dark past littered with sordid financial troubles, marital problems and even death.
Palace with a past
Originally completed in 1990, the house currently features 6 beds and 10 baths in approximately 16,000-square-feet of living space. (That’s huge.) The manse was built by a prominent real estate developer named Leroy Carver III, a guy who owned his own bank — Carver Savings & Loan — and loaned himself $7.9 million to build the behemoth.
Just before the house was completed, however, Mr. Carver fell into deep financial doo-doo. His bank was seized by federal regulators and declared insolvent, so he sold the brand-new estate in 1991 for $13,600,000. Archived news stories from back then suggest it was the most ever paid for an OC home.
The buyer was Taiwanese businessman George Yao. But like Mr. Carver, our Mr. Yao had some serious financial problems. Within two years, the property was in default and folks were chasing him for money.
In 1995, Mr. Yao officially lost the property to the hungry maw of foreclosure. An investment group then flipped the house in April ’96 for just $8 million — or about 60% of what it fetched five years prior — to the next owner, former FBI exec William G. Simon. But our Mr. Simon didn’t have much chance to enjoy his big new home, either — he died only one year later at the ripe old age of 84.
Big Bertha
In mid-’99, Mr. Simon’s estate sold the home for $14,000,000 to a New Jersey couple named Arnold & Debbie Simon. The Simons (no relation to the prior owner) had made a lot of money in the apparel industry and were craving some California sunshine, or so it would seem.
Though the Simons were already been having marital problems, things reportedly worsened soon after their move to Newport Beach. Not long after their big real estate splurge, they began exceptionally hostile divorce proceedings that would drag on unresolved for the better part of a decade.
Compounding the Simons’ issues was the economic recession of 2008, which strained their finances considerably. The following year, the property fell into foreclosure. And Mrs. Simon — who remained in the home while her hubby relocated elsewhere — found herself flat broke. In fact, things became so desperate that she left the home’s air conditioning off during even the hottest summer days — she couldn’t afford the electric bill.
On a scorching afternoon in September 2009, Mrs. Simon tied a heavy-duty extension cord to the grand staircase’s balustrade and hung herself above the mansion’s foyer. Her death made big waves in Orange County society — not just because of her wealth, but because she was a major social figure in the area, throwing numerous charity fundraisers at the property.
But we digress. Despite its dark past, Mr. Simon managed to unload the property in June 2010, less than a year after his estranged wife’s demise. Records show the buyers paid a whopping $27,000,000 for the house, one of the highest prices ever paid in the OC. And this was in the midst of a recession, y’all.
Though technically owned by a blind trust, the property’s current owners are Alan and Twila True.
Mr. and Mrs. Trues are both lifelong entrepreneurs who didn’t grow up in glamorous circumstances. Our Mr. True originally hails from Colorado, but moved to Chicago to work on the Mercantile Exchange after college. By the late 1980s, he was living and working in Asia.
As for Mrs. True, she was raised in the remote Badlands region of South Dakota — on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, otherwise known as the USA’s poorest community . (Mrs. True is Sioux by blood.)
The couple have four children: three biological and one young daughter adopted from the same Sioux tribe where Mrs. True was raised.
Before moving to their impressive Newport Beach digs, the couple long resided in China and Hong Kong, where they made their first fortune in the furniture business. The couple founded office furniture manufacturer True Innovations, a company that was acquired for an undisclosed (but undoubtedly massive) sum by Chinese conglomerate Li & Fong.
Since moving back to the US, the Trues have dumped loads of money into the residential real estate market. By Mrs. True’s own admission, the couple preside over a portfolio of 1,000+ rental properties, most of them small Midwest homes priced in the $70,000-$80,000 range. That means the couple have dropped more than $70 million on real estate alone — not counting their $27 million OC house.
And speaking of the OC, the Trues have become tremendously involved with the local community since they moved into the neighborhood — they regularly host charity luncheons and galas at their home, and it appears they also throw an annual holiday party for their employees on the premises.
Our gurl Mrs. True recently invited the folks at Modern Luxury into her Newport home, where she chatted about her new line of high-end nail salons (and more).
Now, about the real estate and that $60 million asking price. Some of y’all may be inclined to scoff. But before you judge, keep in mind that the Trues completely renovated the home. And after all, this is one of the OC’s premier estates. So take a peek at the photos — whatever you think of the home’s style, the spread is certainly somethin’.
The limestone-clad neoclassical mansion is completely walled and gated for privacy and security. There’s a nine-car underground garage, which is pretty cool, but the real star of the show are those spectacular views. The house sits on more than a half-acre of land and features formal lawns, rows of trees and a large swimming pool. There is more than 300 feet of water frontage plus a boat dock large enough to accommodate a 120-foot yacht.
Mr. and Mrs. True poured a great deal of money into home renovations, so the newly contemporary interiors look totally different from when the Simons owned the place.
The elegantly curved staircase is topped by a large skylight. The master suite features a mega-bedroom (it’s big enough to be a damn ballroom, seriously) and a marble-soaked bathroom.
How serious are the Trues about selling? Yolanda does not know — but the property has been listed since last May (2018) with an unchanged asking price. Maybe they’re just testing the waters — so to speak — or perhaps they’re holding out until the right record-breakin’ buyer saunters on over.
This future buyer — whoever he or she may be — isn’t just buying the most impressive house on SoCal’s most coveted island. They’re buying a very — ahem — “colorful” legacy, too. A mostly tragic legacy, but one with an upbeat ending. After all those distressed previous owners, the Trues have lived here for eight years and are happier — and richer — than ever. Or so it would seem.
