My bed smells like Tom Ford’s Black Orchid and every time I wear it I’m taken back to her bedroom in St. Kilda. I remember it was a late summer night and she was asleep. No top. Black lace underwear. It was 3:30 in the morning. The room was warm, almost stuffy, but I could see out the little gap in her curtain, through the window, out into the night sky, and I could see the Black Orchid she’d put on for me earlier that evening. I was happy and on those nights and during those days, she’s all that mattered to me. I was happy. She was too. Every time I smell it I’m reminded of her and every time I smell it I’m forced to feel the weight of what I did to her. I don’t feel much, I was blunted at birth, but for the briefest of moments, her and I had a future. She deserved better than what I did to her. She deserved a lot better, and for all I know she’s probably happy now, and that in turn makes me happy, because it’s right. The universe has a beautiful kind of magic to it because the very thing I did to her, happened to me. That is justice on a grand, unknowable scale and I learnt a valuable lesson. Don’t play with people’s hearts. Mean what you say and then live it. What I was able to keep from that chapter is the smell of Tom Ford’s Black Orchid. The lush darkness, the sweetness, a reminder of some of the most beautiful chapters in my life. Back when happiness was only a train ride away and all of Melbourne seemed tiny in comparison to that apartment in St. Kilda and the promise within.
