The winter begonia nichu au I’ve been tossing around in my head:

It’s 2021 and I get to choose which former interest I’m thinking abt tonight

For y’all who don’t know, winter begonia is a cdrama about a Chinese opera performer and his businessman queerplatonic partner/boyfriend/whatever, set in the period before and during the Japanese occupation of Beijing

This au is set in shanghai instead of Beijing. It’s still the same problem all around with the republic trying to stay afloat in face of internal and external conflict

Yao is a performer of sheng (gentleman) roles. He specializes in xiaosheng (young gentlemen) but can take on whatever sheng role is needed. He is rather infamous for his refusal to back down and especially his honestly, which often results in him stirring up a lot of drama. As a result, he moves cities rather often once the other local opera tropes decide they hate his guts.

He leads an opera troupe that includes macau and Hong Kong, Taiwan, and north and South Korea. 2ps and/or nyos in there to pad the character count.

Hong Kong (mai liyang/mak lei yung)— Yao’s apprentice, also trained in sheng roles. He eventually wants to leave the troupe, and yao lets him go so he can become the assistant of Arthur, a businessman he meets in the Shanghai British concession

Macau (mai litong/mak lei tung)— focuses on guimen dan (young virtuous women) but can take on other dan roles in a fix. Siblings with Hong Kong, both joined the troupe early on when yao was performing in guangzhou

Taiwan (chen meifeng)— best at xiaodan (young women). Transferred in from a different troupe when they were in fuzhou.

S. Korea (im yongsoo)— chou (comedic/clown role). Ethnically Korean, parents immigrated to Manchuria.

N. Korea (im yonghan)— jing (rough/physically powerful male roles). Twins with S. Korea, both joined the troupe when yao was invited to perform up north. He eventually joins the army to fight the Japanese.

2p! China (Wang yu)— older sibling of yao, a former sheng performer who got hooked on opium after sustaining a bad injury. He is only able to perform for short periods of time

Nyo! China (Wang rong)— younger sibling of yao. A former sheng performer, she and yao fell out after she left the troupe and got married, something that yao opposed

Kiku is a resident of hongkew district in shanghai. A businessman or civil worker of some sort, and an estranged member of a high-profile Japanese military family. That’d be important later. He dabbles in kabuki and has a strong interest in all performing arts.

Part 1: kiku finds out that the opera industry is toxic as hell

Kiku and yao meet when an acquaintance invites kiku to watch one of Yao’s performances. After helping yao avoid some hecklers from a rival troupe, he and kiku become friendly

Kiku makes it his job to make sure yao gets some rest and self care. He takes him out for food pretty often, just because he likes talking to him.

Yao tries to keep his opera-related problems from kiku— he genuinely values him as a friend and doesn’t want him getting into the mess that is the opera social circle

It mostly works until it nearly drives yao into leaving the city for someplace else

At that point, kiku makes yao accept his assistance, and yao grudgingly relents. He becomes a manager of sorts from the troupe and they’re all doing great for a time

At some point they’re telling each other about kabuki/chinese opera. They both find each other’s passion for their interests endearing

Part 2: shit gets serious fast

When shanghai goes under Japanese power, several troupes decide to move south and/or west. Ironically, yao is not one of them. Kiku went through bullshit to keep him here, so yao feels like he owes it to him to stay.

Due to Being Important, kiku ends up being forced to work with the Japanese occupying forces. He uses this power to try and protect yao and his opera troupe, while struggling to come to terms with his duty

This is complicated by the fact that yao is staunchly anti-Japanese-occupation, and is again trying to distance himself from kiku lest they get each other killed. Despite kiku’s efforts to reach out and keep his friend/sort of boyfriend from trouble, yao keeps trying to stir shit up

Yao eventually makes the decision to leave shanghai and go south/west. Cue tearful moments and dramatic confessions of affection. Kiku almost begs him to stay, but both of them know how dangerous it would be to remain involved with each other

The next like fifty years of Chinese history is a mess. Maybe that’s the last time they’d meet, or maybe they might see each other again, somewhere. Or maybe kiku might seek yao out at some point after the war, only to find he’s dead and his troupe members scattered. Haven’t decided how terrible of an ending to have.

If you haven’t gathered, this entire time period isn’t very happy

Chocolate Brown and Olive Green Japan x Nyo!Greece (Part 11/Last Part)

Reminder: I don’t own Hetalia or Nyotalia. I’m also using Nyo!Greece instead of Canon!Greece but everyone else’s gender is the same as to what it is in canon. I’m sorry if characters are OOC. 

The Present, White Day

Greece walked up the hill. Her boyfriend, Japan, told her that it was something important and that she should get there quickly.

Greece was curious as to what was so important so she tried to get there as quickly as possible.

When she got to the top of the hill, what she saw astounded her. The cherry blossoms on the tree were falling in a romantic manner and there was a blanket and basket on the ground. There were even little candles around the area.

That's when Japan came from behind the tree. He greeted, "Hello Greece-Chan."

Greece asked, "Is this for me?"

Japan confirmed it, "Hai, it is."

He handed her a box of chocolates.

Greece smiled, "You're really going all out. Is there a special occasion I forgot about?"

Japan explained, a light blush dusting his cheeks, "Today is White Day."

Greece nodded and sat down. She was really touched by the gesture. She remembered celebrating White Day before but it was never this grand.

Greece and Japan began to eat and chat. Greece noticed that Japan was blushing as time went on.

When it was time for Greece to leave, she stood up and prepared to leave. Japan stopped her, "Greece-Chan, wait. I need to tell you something."

Greece turned around and saw Japan blushing a lot. She tilted her head in curiosity and motioned for him to continue.

Japan took a deep breath, "Greece-Chan, in all my long life, I have never thought that I would be able to get close to someone. Especially in a romantic way, but you changed that. You are my first love and one of my closest friends. We may have had our arguments, but I believe that we got through them. You helped me forgive myself and I thank you for that. I love you and as a thank you for helping me with my issues and showing me how to love,"

He got on one knee and pulled out a ring, "Will you marry me?"

Greece let out a small gasp. She felt her olive green eyes well up with tears of happiness, "Yes."

Japan stood up and gave her the ring, "I love you Greece-Chan."

She looked into his chocolate brown eyes and gave him a kiss, "I love you too Japan."

Thanks so much for reading my first fic! I've noticed that Japan x Nyo!Greece doesn't get a lot of love so write this fic to change that. I am so sorry for the length of this one-shot. I only intended for it to have 1,000 words or something similar. Anyways, I figure I should explain a couple of the events in the fic:

- In June 1889 Japan and Greece begin relations by signing the Treaty of Amity, Commerce and Navigation. I couldn't find any info on the treaty itself.

- From 1916 to 1917 Greece was split in between joining the Allies and staying neutral. The result was the country getting split in two.

- In 1919 Japan proposed a Racial Equality Proposal. Despite getting a lot of votes for adding it to the Treaty of Versailles, the U.S said that it needed to be a unanimous vote. Instead, they gave Japan Germany's stuff in China and some islands in the Pacific.

- In 1932, the Japanese military invades Manchuria without the permission of the government. They blow up their own railroad in the Mukden Incident and blame it on the Chinese to invade Manchuria. They set up the Japanese puppet state Manchukuo. The world is stunned by the war crimes the Japanese army committed there.

- Later that same year, the Lytton Report is released revealing that the Mukden Incident was staged and that Japan should give Manchuria back to China. In 1933, Japan leaves the League of Nations.

- In 1940, Japan joins the Axis. Greece and Japan cease all relations with each other during World War II.

- From 1940 to 1941 Italy attempts to invade Greece. The Italian ambassador tried to ask the king to let Axis troops through Greece but the king says no. The Greeks push back the invasion and the Italians need to call the Germans for help. The Germans and Italians together invade Greece. The Greeks fighting hard enough to make Italy need help from Germany delays Operation Barbarossa.

- From 1946 to 1949 Greece is thrown into Civil War. The Communist party of Greece attempts to take over the government. Britain gives Greece funds but eventually has to pull out because they ran out. America stepped in with the Truman Doctrine and supported Greece.

- In 2005 the Global Durex Sex Survey has revealed that Greece has the most sexual activity and Japan has the least. Yes, this was based off the strip where Greece and Japan sleep together in canon. And the survey was the basis for the strip where Greece and Japan sleep together in canon.

- On Valentines Day (February 14th) in Japan, women give men chocolate instead of it being the other way around. On White Day (March 14th), men return the favor by giving back roughly two or three times the amount of chocolate they received.

I did this thing of Ming dynasty China and Qing dynasty Manchuria like, 8 months ago? And at that point I'd already stopped drawing for a long time bc of life yk, and this was supposed to be my Big Comeback (tm) like I was gonna sit down and do a properly rendered painting like I used to do years ago, but it just... never happened 💀 and it probably never will, so here it is!

also I found these sketched designs I did for a calender project that ended up falling through. My characters were nyo china, nyo mongolia, mongolia, and america, and for a while I was like 'what am I gonna do with such different characters...' but I ended up settling on empire! Nyo Mongolia first outfit was too modern for 'empire' so I tried to do one based off of a Yuan dynasty empress painting with the big tall hat hehe

Chocolate Brown and Olive Green (Nyo!Greece x Japan) Part 4

February, 1932

Japan set his tea down carefully and asked Greece, "Please repeat that."

Greece asked, gritting her teeth, "What happened in Manchuria?"

Japan didn't know what she meant.

Maybe he did, but he couldn't let her know that.

Japan spoke, "I do not know what you mean."

Greece gazed at him with her olive green eyes, an unusually steely look in them, "Why did you attack China?"

Japan thought, 'Oh, that'.

Japan stared right back at her with his chocolate brown eyes, he was about to do something he might regret in the future.

He lied, "China attacked my railroad. I simply defended myself and my country."

Greece glared at him, "But what about the war crimes committed? The innocent civilians and the attacks."

Japan replied, "I didn't know about that, I was simply following the military's orders."

Greece took a breath of relief and Japan felt a knot appear in his stomach. He didn't let it show on his facial expressions of course but it was still there.

Greece apologized, "I'm sorry Japan but I thought you did something you might regret and I assumed you invaded them with no reason to. I apologize."

Japan accepted her apology.

Greece asked him, "Japan, can you promise something to me?"

Japan nodded and Greece continued, "Promise me that you won't invade anyone else. I don't care if they aggravate you, please don't. Please, if your empire grows any stronger you'll become a target and I don't want that for you."

Japan promised, "I promise to you that I won't."

Japan felt the knot in his stomach tighten.

China didn't attack him, Japan simply attacked China because his military did and he had a feeling that he would break his promise.

He pushed both of his feelings away and decided that he wouldn't break his promise to Greece, it would be dishonorable of him.
