Day-Two 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona Still Wears 1970s Psychedelic Paint

Usually when we pay a call on Stefano Bimbi at Nickey Performance, we expect to see either the latest in Gen-Six Camaro performance vehicles or a unique and highly collectible muscle car from GM’s storied past. So you can imagine our surprise last summer when Stefano walked over to a far corner in his St. Charles, Illinois, shop and pulled the cover off this psychedelically painted 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona.

“I guarantee you will never see another one like it,” he said.

Historically, this Charger is one of 503 homologation specials produced by Chrysler Corporation that year. Stock Dodge Charger R/Ts were sent to longtime concept car builders Creative Industries in Detroit for conversion, which included smoothing out the flying buttresses in the rear roofline and making numerous other sheetmetal and structural changes prior to installing the Daytona’s signature nose and wing. Those modifications significantly increased downforce on the track, as witnessed by Buddy Baker’s two-way NASCAR average of 200.447 mph while testing car No. 88 at Talladega.

The original window sticker on this 17,000-mile aero Dodge tells us that this particular code V2 Hemi Orange Daytona was special-ordered through Rochester, New York’s McEvoy Dodge and came equipped with a single-four-barrel 440 Magnum V-8 backed by a code D34 TorqueFlite transmission and the somewhat rare A32/D58 4.10:1 Super Track Pack Dana 60 rear axle. The chassis was equipped with heavy-duty rear springs and front torsion bars, and heavy-duty four-wheel drum brakes covered by code W21 Spyder road wheels mounting F70-14 Goodyear Red Streak tires. Interior appointments included black vinyl bucket seats, a console, tinted glass, a left-side remote control mirror, a tachometer and clock, a Music Master AM radio, power steering, and a sport-type steering wheel. In 1969, this loaded Daytona went for $4,766.25, a significant bump over the Charger’s $3,000 base price and the $3,993 starting price for the Daytona model.

As of this writing, the identity of the Daytona’s first owner is unknown. What we do know is that shortly after purchase, the buyer had the Charger painted in these multicolor metalflake/fade hues by a painter named William Stearns, a fact substantiated by a plaque on the dash. Records indicate the winged warrior was parked in 1972 (it’s possible the owner may have been drafted into the service) and was registered until 1979. Then the car was placed in storage, where it remained for 26 years until it was acquired by a broker and then sold to second owner Jimmy Bodanis, who rebuilt the 440 and attended to all the mechanicals.

Since purchasing the car in 2016, Stefano and his crew at Nickey Performance have just cleaned and detailed the Daytona. They have also enjoyed driving it to local events, cruise-ins, and just for pleasure jaunts. It was also featured in the Day Two display at the 2016 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals, where it received lots of attention.

Sure, if you are a Dodge Daytona/Plymouth Superbird purist, this day-two Daytona may not be your cup of tea. So the question is, do you erase the psychedelic day-two identity and repaint/restore as stock, or leave it as is, a reminder of wilder times gone by?

The Daytona’s original owner was so proud of the multihued candy metalflake paint job that a brass plaque was affixed to the dash declaring “Custom Paint Work by William Stearns.”

We can only imagine how labor intensive it was for Stearns to lay out this paint job. Custom C-scallops accentuate the in-hood turn signal indicators.

Powering this museum piece is the numbers-matching 10.1:1 compression single-four-barrel–equipped Magnum 440 rated at 375 hp at 4,600 rpm and 480 lb-ft of torque at 3,200 rpm. Because the car sat in storage for more than half of its 58 years, second owner Jimmy Bodanis elected to go through the engine and the rest of the car’s mechanicals to ensure that everything was shipshape.

This particular Charger’s all-black vinyl interior with a high-back bucket seat came with a console, a sport-type steering wheel, a tachometer and clock, a Music Master AM radio, power steering and power brakes, the A01 light group, and seatbelts.

A closer look at the nose of the car reveals minor paint damage at the body seams, no doubt due to the front fascia “walking around” at high speed. Wheels are Motor Wheel Spyders, a Dodge dealer option, wrapped with F70-14 Goodyear Red Streak bias-ply rubber.

The key to the Daytona’s high-speed success was the aerodynamic body pieces. Chrysler generated tons of wind tunnel (using a quarter-scale model) and trackside data to achieve the wing’s 23-inch height. However, achieving the proper clearance for the trunk lid came into play as well, so the trunk would be functional for street car versions.

Nickey’s Stefano Bimbi is the third owner of this psychedelically painted, 17,000-mile Dodge Daytona, which was the hit of the Day Two display at 2016’s Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals.
