ive yet to watch/play tlou but you said you hated him so id like to know why before i watch it and just assume "haha man is cool"

Just a disclaimer, TV show Joel is considerably less of a piece of shit than game Joel. I don't wanna ruin the experience for you or spoil it but. I'll just say that just because he's been through a lot of miserable shit doesn't excuse his behaviour. That's all I'll say
