the babbit masterpost
HELLO welcome to the Babbit's Blog masterpost!!! On this post you'll find some fun facts about yours allegedly (me <33), some ref's for my different 'sona's, and a couple links to my fics and whatnot! Are you ready? No?? Excellent neither am i let's do this
Meet the Babbits!: the self-inserts/personas
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the first ref is for my general/most commonly used persona, Babbit! They aren't really an anthro/furry as much as they are a humanoid with the head of a rabbit. I like to think of this one as the 'me' that's in my head- the purest form of my thoughts and feelings, but not the solid real-life me. The second ref is my self-insert persona, Rabbit, the one i picture using most often when i'm reading a fic or imagining a self-insert scenario lol. This one is like the me that people see and meet and speak to in real actual life, if that makes sense. It's the way I come across to people and all of the things I wish I could iron out of my crumpled up real-self <3 The third is a much more specific 'sona, Hazel, who started off as a FNaF:SB animatronic self-insert. She does have a backstory and lore now, which i think makes her more of an OC than a self-insert, but a lot of her is still me and a lot of what she experiences in her backstory is from my life/instills the same feelings that were taken away from things that happened to me, so I think she kinda counts enough to put a ref for her here sdkjfsdhfj (Why the different names?: makes things a little easier, and they hold meaning to me symbolically, I guess!)
Content!: Here's a short list of my various fics that will get updated as I create more! (it was, in reality, not fine.): FNaF Sun/Moon x Reader fanfic, gender neutral, for general audiences, fluff-fest, idiots to lovers "You're the new tech/repairman at the Fazbear Mega Pizzaplex, unfortunately. Your first task? To make the Daycare Attendant into two separate animatronics. It's an amazing opportunity, really, and there is nothing you love more than getting a chance to really work with such tech! The only bad part is that you don't know how to tell anyone that you just might be in over your head. (You are extremely in over your head.)" After Everything Was Fixed (but you were still broken): AU FNaF Sun/Moon x (Animatronic) Reader, gender neutral, read with caution, angst, harm to sentient robots, traumatized main character, hurt/comfort slow burn, romance slow burn "The virus was gone. Everyone was fixed. You had been put back together. It's a time for a new beginning, to do things right this time, to wash away the past and paint a better future. Their memories of the infection had- mercifully- been taken away from them. Yours had not. He doesn't understand why you try to avoid him. Even if you could tell him, you're not sure you would. You want to be his friend, but it's difficult; every time you see him, you remember the hundreds of times he killed you." A fic where you are a repairman-themed STAFFbot, taking place post-virus. In the past, Moon, infected by the virus, took delight in attacking and dismantling the reader during the night. Now, in the present, you find yourself burdened by the memories of the past while everyone around you has no recollection of the events. It gets more complicated as Sun and Moon, both now cleared of the virus, grow curious of you. This fic will follow a series of arcs, presently on arc one. For anyone curious, feel free to send an ask about the arcs in 'After Everything Was Fixed'! The Sun, the Moon, and the Blazing Comet (title subject to change): AU FNaF Sun/Moon/Eclipse x Reader, gender neutral, teen and up audiences, travel/journey, betrayal, hurt/comfort slowburn, reconciling, themes of breaking the mold, found family (TBA) Hold My Broken Hands (title subject to change): AU FNaF Sun/Moon x Reader, gender neutral, mature audiences, dark romance, dark comedy, severe bodily harm, mutilation, murder, obsessive behavior, possessive behavior, lovesick (TBA)
My AU's!: i'm going to make a Babbit-AUs-Masterpost and then put the link here i swear, i just have so many im sorry jdfhsjdfhs (like more than twenty)
Fandoms!: I enjoy, have been in, made or make content for: Pokemon Undertale FNaF Creepypasta (YEAH I KNOW LET ME LIVE OKAY) My Little Pony (I KNOW OKAY LEAVE ME ALONE) Steven Universe Star Trek Warrior Cats i'm sure theres more but i just forgot everything i have ever liked wheeeeeze
Whomst the hell?: HI I'm Rabbit! Or Bones! Or Babbit! Or Avarice/Ava, if you want to go for a more legitimate-sounding name. I'm 24 years old, prefer to use they/them pronouns, and so, so incredibly ace. I've been drawing as long as I've had the ability to hold a pen, writing since I was in grade school, and being a plague to the ones around me since the beginning of time! If you've seen my art, its probably from the absolute mountain of fluffy-wuffy love-dovey (y/n) x Sundrop/Moondrop/Eclipse doodles I've been sharing for several years now sdfjhsdj. If you've heard of my fics, it was probably the one I made just for fun that's now turned into an actual fanfiction that I enjoy writing, the silly-lovey-fluff incarnate (it was, in reality, not fine.) !
Likes n Dislikes!: I'm a sucker for sap, fluff, and lots and lots of love-dovey bullshit! I also like stories about finding oneself and monsters being befriended or loved. I like space, aliens, robots, the odd and strange, injecting humanity into things not human, monsters, creatures, animals, the fae, concepts of spirits and karma and the afterlife, and more! I dislike 'fanservice', most anime tbh LOL it's not personal I just don't enjoy it im srry, FLY BABIES i know they have an actual name but i hate that word too pls just dont i will scream, sexually aggressive/forceful content/characters, being made to feel small, dumb, or trapped,
Other!: I have a pretty high gross-out tolerance! I also have a pretty high 'wow that's messed up huh' tolerance, in that sometimes I will just say stuff that's super grim or dark or messed up and not realize it lmao. I am full of random facts and anecdotes, especially weird or gross ones! sometimes i get on tangents that can go for actual hours so pls forgive that lol
WARNINGS: THIS BLOG MAY FEATURE CONTENT BASED ON/RELATED TO THEMES OF GUILT, CHILDHOOD LOSS, GRIEF, SELF HATRED, DISCONNECTION FROM REALITY/SELF, TRAUMA, AND SEVERE DEPRESSION/ANXIETY. YES I AM GETTING HELP. YES I AM OKAY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND UNDERSTANDING.

What your headcanons on Garrett? Did he visit Carlisle and the cullens before the events of Breaking Dawn? What sort of shenanigans does he get up to? What led up to his and Carlisle's friendship in the first place?
The Guide is pretty vague, but the short film "Turncoats" from the Storytellers project put Garrett and Carlisle's meeting at the Battle of Yorktown (and maybe Breaking Dawn the movie does, too?) and that's fine with me. I didn't have anything specific in mind but I figured they did meet sometime during the war when Carlisle was working as a battlefield surgeon. Probably something where Garrett's hunting British soldiers and catches the scent of another vampire and there's a big misunderstanding where Garrett thinks Carlisle's posing as a doctor to hunt the American soldiers and Carlisle's like no no no I'm actually a doctor I'm helping!
Then a lot of teasing about him being English/British and Carlisle's like I was born before America was a thing what do you want from me? Garrett thinks Carlisle's Neat for the vegetarian and doctor stuff but has no interest in doing it himself when there are plenty of red coats to eat but Carlisle gives him vague plans "I might go to Philadelphia next" so the next time Garrett swings by Philly in his travels he tries to find Carlisle to catch up. I think he's probably met the rest of the Cullens by the time Breaking Dawn happens (and I still think name-dropping some of these people in Eclipse would have helped BD a LOT because then they wouldn't just be random characters we've never heard of--we'd have at least heard of them. Pretty sure there's a vague reference to Carlisle trying to get in touch with old friends in Eclipse after the Denali coven refuses to help against the newborns, and just NAMING some of them here could have made their appearance in BD feel a little more organic), but he's not the type to stick around in one place for long. Emmett totally loves when he visits though. They both love a challenge. They bro out. (I feel like Garrett TOTALLY would have helped in Eclipse if they could have gotten in touch with him. "Fighting to the death against a newborn army? Sounds like fun.")
Garrett seems like a friendly guy so I feel like, like Carlisle, he's got a lot of random friends. He probably already knew Mary and Randall, for example. He charms any vampires he comes across rather than fighting them, but could hold his own in a fight if it came to it.
Mostly sticks to the USA. MAYBE Canada. Hates the British and by extension is not interested in Europe in general. He's like Ron Swanson. "It is a garbage continent." MAYBE he went during the world wars to help on the American side--although it PAINED him to have the Brits as allies, he hunted Germans instead for a bit.
(INSTANTLY becomes BFFs with Liam of the Irish coven over their hatred of the English when he meets him in BD, though. Carlisle looks around nervously and wonders how he managed to have TWO friends who hate Englishmen.)
His relationship with Kate was cute but it seemed way too fast/out of the blue to me. Like the iconic line of "If we live through this, I'll follow you anywhere, woman" and Kate's "now he tells me" FEELS like it was a long time coming, but according to the timeline they've literally known each other for like maybe two weeks? But this is Twilight and we can't let anyone outside of E/B/J have like, an actual character arc and this is more than most people get so like, I'll take it I guess.

Hi! I’ve just found your blog and will you marry me?!? AANG CONTENT?!?? ! I saw the requests open and if you’re still open for them could I request a Zuko x reader? Zukos been awed by readers sheer power over and over cus he’s a sucker for strong women. And when he joins the gaang he is soo smitten with the reader and every one sees it but the oblivious reader. And he enventually asks for everyone’s help but during the ember island play she finds out cause they over dramatize his big crush?
Awww! We should probably meet before getting married lol  Sorry for taking so long with the request, life has been kicking my butt. Here you go! c:
As a former citizen of a small village in the Earth Kingdom, you always longed for adventure and there weren’t many ways to leave your family farm. Or at least not without having to take something from them, and you had refused to. You knew they had little enough already.
But it was different one day, after meeting the avatar himself and his friends. As an earthbender, you weren’t sure where you could go but you wanted to go everywhere. And if you could beat up some Fire Nation soldiers, then you would be having the time of your life.
You had gone into the market for some feed for the lone ostrich horse, and a few of the Fire Nation soldiers had caught wind of the avatar. You were sure that he could actually take them down himself, but you weren’t exactly going to test that theory, and you trapped them in pillars of earth before helping the group out of the market and towards your family farm.
That was how you had met them anyway, and you had asked to join them that day. You hadn’t exactly expected them to say yes either, but they had, and you were overjoyed. So were they, but you assumed that Katara was more or less just glad to not be the only girl there.
Shortly after you joined however, the adventure you always wanted seemed to be a bit much at times.
First, there was the general that actively tried to get Aang into the avatar state and had put all of you in danger for it. Then there were the nomads that you had wanted to leave in the tunnels, you couldn’t believe how carefree they could be in the middle of a war. Even after all that your group had done to get into Omashu, you all found out that the Fire Nation had overtaken it and that Aang had to find an earthbending teacher himself. You offered, but you still had much to learn for it yourself.
And your least favorite place happened to be the swamp. Everyone there had visions of some person they already met and lost or in Aang’s case, were going to meet. You however, had a vision of your family. You had left them, and who knows if you would see them again, but you kept reminding yourself that it was okay, and they understood why you did.
The next place was some odd avatar-hating village, and Aang got arrested. But it was okay, because the day had ended with him out of prison, you beating up some soldiers, and some weird dough-like thing that you immediately spat out after tasting.
 In another Earth Kingdom town, your group had gone to an underground earthbending tournament which you had a blast watching. You had wanted to participate as well, but ended up following the rest of them as they looked for the Blind Bandit. The day went well, considering Aang had managed to get an earthbending teacher and so had you, despite her parents originally saying no. You had assumed that her parents never changed her mind like she said, having done the same thing with your own.
After Toph had joined, there was a strange metal contraption constantly following them by way of Appa’s fur trail. It had turned out to be the Fire Nation princess herself, and her two nonbending but still dangerous friends. You had helped Sokka and Katara with the other two that you had yet to learn the names of, while Aang was dealing with the last one. There was a fight because of course there was, you were starting to wonder just how many more fights you would have to go through in this. That was not to say you didn’t like to fight. You excelled at it.
That had also been the first time you had actually met the Prince Zuko that had literally followed them around the nations, and the first thing you wanted to know was where his ponytail had gone. Sokka had made sure to tell you all about it, but had left out the fact that he could actually be considered attractive, not that you would say that part out loud, and especially not when he was your enemy as well.
You had definitely been thrown for a loop when Azula had shot Iroh with lightning, only for Zuko to refuse help from any of you, even though Katara would have been the only one able to actually help.
Your second least favorite place was the desert, even though you thought the library had been amazing, apart from Wan Shi Tong getting upset that you guys had actually only come to learn how to defeat the Fire Nation. But Appa had gone missing, and you were absolutely convinced none of that was Toph’s fault. Another part of the desert that you didn’t like much were the buzzard wasps, but at least you had begun learning how to bend sand, which was definitely odd.
On your way to Ba Sing Se, they ended up meeting a few old friends of theirs, the Kyoshi Warriors and you had been quick to introduce yourself as well. Mostly since you had grown up hearing about them, and how amazing they would be, you really aspired to be more like them.
Of course, the ticket lady wouldn’t let any of you get onto the ferry without passports, and Toph had managed to get all of you, only for the group to go the other route to Ba Sing Se when a pregnant lady and her husband had mentioned that their things were stolen. The Serpent’s Pass, you thought was aptly named when going through it. The serpent was terrifying, and you severely hoped that you wouldn’t have to go that way again.
But at least you had made it through before Ying had her baby, which you thought was surprising considering she was quite far along. She asked you if you wanted to hold her, and you declined, having held more babies in your life than you probably would have liked, not to mention you hadn’t particularly wanted to hold any more. At least for now.
The new family had separated from you and your own group when you finally reached Ba Sing Se, only to find out that the Fire Nation trio was back again and they were trying to take down the wall with another metal thing. You had been helping Toph and Katara bend the awful rock and water combination and successfully kept a few of them back that way.
Ba Sing Se was a horrible city in your opinion, the Dai Li only being a part of it, but you were having a big issue with how the poor had less opportunities and the like.
You were partially glad when you left with the group, but heavily concerned for the avatar you’d come to think of as a younger brother. He had been shot with lightning and actually died, it was a miracle when Katara had healed him.
The weeks passing seemed to grow longer and longer, and nobody said it but everyone could tell that there was a lot of concern and worry for Aang when he hadn’t woke up. You spent your days learning how to bend metal like Toph, and it had taken you a while to even start.
Once he was awake however, you had to leave the boats you’d grown somewhat accustomed to and wait for the solar eclipse to grow nearer.
Unfortunately where you had to wait happened to be in the Fire Nation itself, and you hadn’t exactly wanted for more red in your wardrobe but it couldn’t be helped.
The next month or so, you weren’t sure how long it actually had been and couldn’t be bothered to remember, Katara had helped a coast village with its sick by posing as a river spirit and had even blown up a Fire Nation factory with Aang and finally scared the soldiers away from the town by continuing the ruse. Sokka had acquired a master of his own and made his own sword out of a piece of rock that fell from the sky. Toph had been scamming people in town, occasionally with your help but you ended up stopping when you thought that it would be too obvious. Katara had ended up finding another Southern Water Tribe bender, but unfortunately due to decades of being in prison had gone mad and had been kidnapping innocent people and trapping them under a mountain.
Hama had actually terrified you more than anything else had, but you couldn’t help but pity her at first. Your empathy had been shut off when you saw how Katara had to bloodbend her that night, and how upset she was.
The day of the invasion had been off to a good start, but it had been cut short when everyone learned that the Fire Nation already knew of the solar eclipse and had planned for it.
All of you had regrouped, apart from the adults that had gotten arrested for being a part of the invasion, and had gone to the Western Air Temple. Having never gone to any of the air temples yourself, you had quite a bit of fun exploring this one.
When the prince himself appeared and offered to be Aang’s firebending teacher, you wanted to throw a rock in his face and probably would’ve, had anyone else started a fight. It had been his choice to join his sister in Ba Sing Se, and now he wanted to join the group that he’d been chasing this entire time? Needless to say, you held a grudge against him, and you wouldn’t hesitate to earthbend him to the edge of the cliff if he tried anything.
The next day however, Toph returned with burned feet and Zuko had come back yet again. After his apologies, Aang had accepted him as his firebending teacher shortly after that.
It seemed like everyone but the ones that could earthbend had gone on a field trip with him, oddly enough, when Aang and Zuko had gone to learn real firebending, then it was Sokka and Zuko apparently breaking Hakoda and Suki out of prison but they also brought back a prisoner named Chit Sang too. Then it was Katara’s turn, and she went with him to confront the man who killed her mother. Thankfully, she hadn’t killed him.
Instead of camping out, Zuko had offered up a new place to sleep at, and it was a house that apparently no one goes anymore. You were a little weirded out at the thought of it, and Katara thought so too.
“Doesn’t it seem weird that we’re living in the Fire Lord’s own house?
“I told you, my father hasn’t come here since our family was actually happy. And that was a long time ago. It’s the last place anyone would think to look for us.”
“True, but still weird.” You piped up, doing your own stretches as the two firebenders had finished with their training.
“You guys are not gonna believe this. There’s a play about us.” Sokka said, walking out onto the courtyard with Suki, holding a rolled up poster, looking awfully smug.
“We were just in town, and we found this poster.” Suki continued, while Sokka rolled out the poster and held it up so all of you could see it.
“What? How is that possible?”
“Listen to this.” Sokka started, before beginning to read off the poster itself. “The boy in the iceberg is a new production from acclaimed playwright Puan Tin who scoured the globe, gathering information on the avatar from the icy South Pole to the heart of Ba Sing Se. His sources include singing nomads, pirates, prisoners of war, and a surprisingly knowledgeable merchant of cabbage.”
“Brought to you by the critically acclaimed Ember Island players.” Suki finished, before Zuko began to groan.
“Ugh. My mother used to take us to see them. They butchered “Love Amongst the Dragons” every year.”
“Sokka, do you really think it’s a good idea for us to attend a play about ourselves?”
“Come on, a day at the theater? This is the kind of wacky, time-wasting nonsense I;ve been missing.” And with that answer, you all headed out to the theater to see whatever play this would end up being.
Upon arriving, you all settled down into the seats, Katara sitting next to Toph and you sitting next to her, much to Aang’s disappointment, you were sure. You expected Aang to just sit down next to you, but no, Zuko had.
“Why are we sitting in the nosebleed section? My feet can’t see a thing from up here.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll tell your feet what’s happening.” Katara answered to Toph, while your gaze was awaiting on the curtains.
They opened to show what was supposed to Katara and Sokka on a boat in the sea, back in the South Pole you assumed. You almost laughed at Sokka’s excitement to notice the two when he grabbed his sister’s shoulder and pointed from each other back and forth.
“Sokka, my only brother.” The fake Katara let out a sigh, dramatically gesturing to the painted “ice glaciers” on her side. “We constantly roam these icy south pole seas, and yet, never do we find anything fulfilling.”
“All I want is a full feeling in my stomach. I’m starving.” ‘Sokka’ responded, making the real Katara and Sokka give each other a look as the audience burst into laughter.
“Is food the only thing that’s on your mind?”
“Well, I’m trying to get it out of my mind and in my mouth. I’m starving.”
“Is that all that guy says?” You grimaced, starting to dread when your character showed up.
“This is pathetic. My jokes are way funnier than this.” Sokka exclaimed, while Toph laughed at him.
“I think he’s got you pegged.” With that, the rest of you turned back to the play.
“Every day, the world awaits a beacon to guide us, yet none appears. Still, we cannot give up hope, for hope is all we have and we must never relinquish it, even. . . Even to our dying breath.” Fake Katara began to sob, and you drew in a breath through your teeth when Katara crossed her arms.
“Well, that’s just silly. I don’t sound like that.”
“You have your moments.” You admitted, but even you would agree that this was an exaggeration for sure.
“Oh man, this writer’s a genius.” At least Toph was having fun.
“It appears to be someone frozen in ice, perhaps for 100 years.” ‘Katara’ said, when a light shone down onto a floating iceberg.
“But who? Who is the boy in the iceberg?” Fake Sokka asked, the two climbing up the iceberg.
“Waterbend, hi-ya!” Fake Katara cried out, drawing her hand down as if to actually crack the ‘iceberg’ herself, only for it to break and reveal fake Aang, whose actor was a girl apparently.
“Who are you, frozen boy?
“I’m the avatar, silly, here to spread joy and fun.” ‘Aang’ giggled, and you looked to the avatar himself, only to see him frowning deeply.
“Wait, is that a woman playing me?” He asked, right as a fake Appa showed up and went around the iceberg in a circle while fake Katara gasped.
“An airbender. My heart is so full of hope that it’s making me tear-bend.” She began to fake sob, falling to her knees and grabbing onto fake Aang’s leg.
“My stomach is so empty that it’s making me tear-bend.” Fake Sokka cried out, falling to his knees as well and grabbing onto ‘Aang’s’ other leg. “I need meat.” With that, you really couldn’t help but laugh, even when both Katara and Sokka were beginning to glare at you.
“But wait! Is that a platter of meaty dumplings?” The actress for Aang mentioned, pointing up at nothing in particular.
“Ooh, where, where?” ‘Sokka’ quickly asked, only for ‘Aang’ to start laughing.
“Did I mention that I’m an incurable prankster?”
“I don’t do that. That’s not what i’m like. And I’m not a woman.”
“Oh they nailed you, Twinkletoes.” Toph joked, laughing at the play as she basically had been this entire time.
A new boat showed up on the stage, this time carrying Zuko and his uncle.
“Prince Zuko, you must try this cake.” ‘Iroh’ offered, while fake Zuko was looking out at sea with a telescope.
“I don’t have time to stuff my face. I must capture the avatar to regain my honor.”
“Well, while you do that, maybe I’ll capture another slice.” Fake Iroh said, before literally shoving the cake into his face and eating.
“You sicken me.” ‘Zuko’ said, with a disgusted look on his face, and you let out a laugh.
“They make me look totally stiff and humorless.”
“Actually, I think that actor’s pretty spot-on.” Katara joked, and Zuko had been quick to turn to her.
“How could you say that?
“Let’s forget about the avatar and get massages.”
“How could you say that?” Fake Zuko cried out at Iroh’s suggestion, only for you to laugh when you saw the look on Zuko’s face.
The scene panned out to show Aang the actress at the Southern Air Temple, with a tail sticking out of the fake bushes.
“Hey, look! I think I found something.” Fake Aang kept digging into the bushes, only to come back out with a fake puppet of Momo on his shoulder and a fake arm hanging from his side. “A flying rabbit-monkey! I think I’ll name him Momo.” He laughed, before moving the puppet so it would look like it was talking.
“Hi, everybody. I love you.” At the sight of it, both you and Aang let out a low groan. Momo did not deserve this slander.
With another scene, it showed a Kyoshi Warrior, which you assumed was supposed to be Suki before ‘Sokka’ came out, dressed in the same Kyoshi Warrior ensemble.
“Does this dress make my butt look fat?” He said, making the real Suki laugh, as you turned to look at the couple.
“So nobody told me you were a Kyoshi Warrior? I do have a question though. Did you look as good as Suki does?” You couldn’t help but tease him, although this was definitely bringing up some topics that you had missed out on.
The scene changed yet again, but this time was showing what was supposed to be King Bumi. Was he really that buff?
“Riddles and challenges must you face if you are ever to leave this place.” It showed fake Aang pushing a boulder, fake Sokka running from a gorilla rabbit, and fake Katara groaning as she was trapped in crystals.
It cut to a different part of the play, showing a pirate boat and pirates began to surround the trio. The pirates continued to fight each other as the trio actually got out quite safely.
“Why did you have to steal that waterbending scroll?” Fake Sokka asked as they crept away from the pirates.
“It just gave me so much hope.” Fake Katara answered, sobbing yet again.
“I really hope my character isn’t as bad.” You added, wearing a grimace, since you knew Katara didn’t cry nearly as many times as this one made her out to be like.
“The avatar is mine!” Fake Zuko cried out, while fake Aang was chained to a wall with soldiers surrounding him. “Wait, who’s coming?” He pointed to a different part of the stage where a person with a large blue demon-like mask held dao swords.
“I am the blue spirit, the scourge of the Fire Nation, here to save the avatar.” He exclaimed, before the soldiers began to drop to the ground dramatically and he somehow defeated fake Zuko as well as simultaneously untying fake Aang.
“My hero.” ‘Aang’ said, before leaving the stage with the blue spirit.
The scene changed, and it showed a sobbing ‘Katara’ with a fake Jet, hanging from a rope.
“Don’t cry, baby. Jet will wipe out that nasty town for you.”
“Oh, Jet. You’re so bad.” Toph laughed, while Katara tried to hide her face, and you just lightly patted her shoulder with a slight look of pity.
“Look! It’s the Great Divide. The biggest canyon in the Earth Kingdom.” Aang mentioned, standing atop fake Appa.
“Eh, let’s keep flying.” Fake Sokka shrugged, while you only leaned back into your seat.
“Don’t go, Yue. You’re the only woman who’s ever taken my mind off of food.” The two actors dramatically kiss, before fake Sokka turns away with a gag. “Wait, did you have pickled fish for dinner?”
“Goodbye, Sokka. I have important moon duties to take care of. And yes, I did have pickled fish.” Fake Yue said, going up into the sky with the moon.
“You never told me you made out with the moon spirit.” Suki chuckled, and you glanced at the couple to see tears in Sokka’s eyes as he shushed her.
“Shh, I’m trying to watch.” Turning back to look at the stage, you saw the actress for Aang in a fish spirit costume, crushing fake fire Nation ships.
“The avatar is back to save the day! Yay!” He said, kicking and stomping on the rest of the fake ships before falling onto the floor as the curtains closed.
“So far, this intermission is the best part of the play.” Zuko mentioned when all of you sat on the steps outside of the theater.
“Apparently, the playwright thinks I’m an idiot who tells bad jokes about meat all the time.” Sokka angrily shoved jerky into his mouth, as Suki teased him.
“Yeah, you tell bad jokes about plenty of other topics.”
“I know!”
“At least the Sokka actor kind of looks like you. That woman playing the avatar doesn’t resemble at all.” Aang lamented, putting his hands over his head, as Toph shrugged.
“I don’t know. You are more in touch with your feminine side than most guys.” With that, Aang groaned and Katara interrupted when he stood up.
“Relax, Aang. They’re not accurate portrayals. It’s not like I’m a preachy crybaby who can’t resist giving over-emotional speeches about hope all the time.” Everyone had clearly been looking at her but nobody said a word, until she asked. “What?”
“Yeah, that’s not you at all.” Aang backed her up, sitting back down and rubbing the back of his neck.
“Listen, friends. It’s obvious that the playwright did his research. I know it must hurt, but what you’re seeing up there on that stage is the truth.” Toph offered, and you tilted your head.
“Not quite I don’t think, this is definitely exaggerated.”
As the group went back into the theater, the scene was apparently when you had met the group, seeing as it looked like your hometown.
“Well, here we are in the Earth Kingdom.”
“I’d better have a look around to see if I can find an earthbending teacher.”
“Hey, is that the avatar? Get him!” A Fire Nation soldier exclaimed, pointing at fake Aang, when fake you appeared on the stage.
“No, don’t take him! I need to leave this town and abandon my family forever!” ‘You’ cried out, fake earthbending the soldiers out before running with the group. “I don’t want to live on this farm anymore! I want to beat up people!”
You grimaced at their portrayal of you, but at least the actress looked somewhat like you, even if the personality was quite a bit off.
“That’s not. . Quite true.” You added, seeing fake you leave with the rest of them.
The scene was changed into another Earth Kingdom town, and you assumed this was where Toph showed up.
“Well, here we are in the Earth Kingdom again. So we can find an actual earthbending teacher.” Fake Katara repeated, the four of them standing next to a suspiciously large rock.
“This must be where I come in.” Toph whispered as fake Aang ‘flew’ around the audience with a rope.
“I flew all over town, but I couldn’t find a single earthbending master.”
“Here it comes.” Toph said, leaning forward in her seat.
“You can’t find an earthbending master in the sky. You have to look underground.” Fake Toph was apparently a very large and buff man, throwing the fake rock off stage. Which only caused everyone but Toph to start laughing, yourself included.
“Who are you?” Fake Aang asked, as fake Toph spat away from him, before proudly pointing to himself before beginning to flex his arms.
“My name’s Toph, because it sounds like tough, and that’s just what I am.”
“Wait a minute. I sound like a guy. A really buff guy.” Toph said, already starting to smile when Katara turned to her.
“Well Toph, what you hear up there is the truth. It hurts, doesn’t it?”
“Are you kidding me? I wouldn’t have cast it any other way. At least it’s not a flying bald lady.” Toph answered, making Aang frown as you bit back a snicker.
“So you’re blind?” ‘Aang’ asked, waving his hand in front of ‘Toph’.
“I can see you doing that. I see everything that you see, except I don’t see like you do. I release a sonic wave from my mouth.” Fake Toph explained before beginning to scream, causing everyone in the audience to flinch, apart from the actual Toph of course, who only grinned. “There. I got a pretty good look at you.”
The scene changed to show Iroh and Zuko who apparently had long hair now.
“Zuko, it’s time we had a talk about your hair. It’s gone too far.”
“Maybe it’s best if we split up.” Fake Zuko dramatically flipped his long hair as the two actors walked off the stage, only for everyone to come back with fake Azula as well.
“Azula, my sister, what are you doing here?”
“You caught me. Wait, what’s that? I think it’s your honor.” She said, pointing up and everyone in the cast looked away from her as she slipped away.
“Where?”
“She escaped. But how?” Fake Katara asked, and it switched to show Azula and Aang at the wall of Ba Sing Se with the drill.
“If she continues drilling, this wall will come down for sure.” Fake Aang said, throwing a fake rock at her.
“Yes, continue drilling. The city of Ba Sing Se can hide no longer.” Fake Azula said as ‘Aang’ continued throwing rocks, but it never showed how it ended as the scene changed to show a mind-controlled Jet.
“No, Jet, what did they do to you? Fake Aang cried out, dodging as fake Jet swung out with his hooks.
“Must serve Earth King. Must destroy!” He exclaimed as a fake rock fell onto him, before curling up underneath it so his body wouldn’t be showing.
“Did Jet just die?” Zuko asked, as Sokka answered, gesturing with his hands.
“You know, it was really unclear.”
“I have to admit, Prince Zuko, I really find you attractive.” Fake Katara said, now seemingly in the crystal caves of Ba Sing Se as fake you was looking for a way out, hardly paying any attention to the two.
“You don’t have to make fun of me.” The actor said, turning away and then turning back when fake Katara sat down onto the same rock as him.
“But I mean it. I’ve had eyes for you since the day you first captured me.” With that, you noticed the real Zuko and Katara briefly glance at each other with mildly disgusted looks as Aang frowned at the stage.
“Wait. I thought you were the avatar’s girl. And besides I’m in love with someone else.” Fake Zuko then said, beginning to walk away and very obviously looked towards fake you. ‘Katara’ laughed, before starting to say.
“The avatar? Why, he’s like a little brother to me. I certainly don’t think of him in a romantic way. Besides, how could he ever find out about this?” She hugged him, and you looked at the stage in confusion.
“There’s no way you two would do that.” You said, knowing for a fact that Katara was crushing on Aang, and she had already divulged that he kissed her the day of the invasion. “But what I don’t get is why the actor looks at me when he says he’s in love with someone else. What’s up with that?” You questioned, only to get radio silence from everyone there. You shrugged, figuring that you would weasel the answer out of someone later.
“Oh, you’re getting up? Can you get me some fire flakes?” Sokka asked Aang when he walked out of the theater after that debacle. “Oh, and fire gummies.”
“Well, my brother, what’s it going to be? Your nation or a life of treachery?” Fake Azula said, only for fake Zuko to contemplate things.
“Choose treachery. It’s more fun.” Fake Iroh said, drinking some tea as ‘Zuko’ walked over to him and paused.
“No way!” ‘Azula’ yelled before he pushed ‘Iroh’ over onto the ground and headed towards his sister’s side.
“I hate you, Uncle. You smell, and I hate you for all time!” As he left the stage with ‘Azula’, the Earth Kingdom flag fell onto the actor for Iroh.
“You didn’t really say that, did you?” Katara asked, and you frowned when Zuko answered.
“I might as well have.”
The next scene was Ty Lee and Mai taking over Ba Sing Se, only for Aang to appear out from behind the throne.
“Avatar state, yip-yip!” Fake Aang proceeded to be brought up from the stage by a rope as fake Azula appeared.
“Not if my lightning can help it.” A ribbon was thrown at the fake avatar who pretended to be electrocuted and fell to the floor. “The avatar is no more.” At that, the whole audience seemed to cheer, apart from your group.
You stretched during the intermission, thankful to be out of the seat.
“It seems like every time there’s a big battle, you guys barely make it out alive. I mean, you guys lose a lot.” Suki mentioned, only for her boyfriend to quickly respond.
“You’re one to talk, Suki, didn’t Azula take you captive? That’s right, she did.”
“Are you trying to get on my bad side?”
“I’m just saying.”
“Does anyone know where Aang is?” Katara interrupted the couple, and you hoped that the two might finally talk about how they feel.
“He left to get me fire gummies like ten minutes ago, and I’m still waiting.” Sokka complained, only for his sister to turn away from him.
“I’m gonna check outside.” She said, walking out of the theater, as a child dressed up as Aang pretended to fly around.
“Suki, what are the chances you can get me backstage? I got some jokes I want to give to the actor me.”
“I’m an elite warrior who’s trained for many years in the art of stealth. I think I could get you backstage.” And the two walk off, leaving you with Zuko and Toph.
“Well, I think I’m going to go check out how bad Sokka’s jokes are. Maybe you can tell her now.” Toph suggested, before following Suki and Sokka.
“Wait-” But you had cut Zuko off before he could continue.
“Tell me what?” Would someone finally tell you about why fake Zuko looked at you when he said he was in love with someone else?
“I-uh.. The actor wasn’t entirely wrong.” He partially confessed, only leaving you with more questions.
“Wrong about which part?” You simply couldn’t understand any bit of it.
“I’ve kind of been in love with you for a while.” He quickly answered, glancing at you to see your reaction before looking away.
“Wait what-” You said, only momentarily confused before shaking your head. You didn’t exactly understand why, and that’s exactly what you said. “Why? I don’t get it. There’s nothing special or anything about me.”
“You are far from ordinary, Y/N. You’re so strong and-”
“So what you’re telling me, you’re attracted to strong women?” You teased, oddly satisfied upon seeing the light pink of his cheeks as he groaned before letting out a sigh.
“Yeah.” He admitted, before continuing. “I even asked everyone for help with this.”
“Wait, is that why you had told me I was pretty the other day? And why I found flowers in front of my door the next morning?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, I thought you were hot when we first met, so we’re even.” You shrugged, looking at him from the corner of your eye.
“Do you still think that?”
“What do you think?” You answered his question with a question, leaning closer to him until your faces were merely inches apart. “Y’know, I started training to get my mind off you.”
Just as your lips were almost touching, you had closed your eyes only to quickly open them and pull away when you heard a wolf-whistle.
“It’s about time!”

Laurel power of the 3?
Laurel: What changes to the books would you make if you could write the series?
I got two requests for this one! While I'm sort of following the same idea of "sticking closer to canon but making it functionally better", I think this series is really indicative of how poor planning made it functionally worse than its predecessors. So while I'll try to avoid diving too deep into AU territory, there will be some more significant changes to try and make it all work together better. Some of my thoughts on this have been influenced by @tennelleflowers‘s video on their Po3 changes - it’s a really great take on the series!
First, I would straight up butcher this series into three books. There’s a lot of filler here with the ancients and visits to the tribe and the mess that is the last book, and I would just boot all that to the curb. There could be some mentions of ancients, but the tribe visits feel less than necessary to the plot.
The Sight: Lionkit, Jaykit, Hollykit are just starting to grow up in ThunderClan. I would put greater emphasis on how they’re raised by the other queens in the nursery, especially Ferncloud but Daisy as well. They still love Squirrelflight and view her as her mother, but they’re very close to Ferncloud and Daisy. Squirrelflight has kept up with her warrior duties since Ferncloud has nursed the three when Squirrel’s milk didn’t come in. All around their kithood is just fuzzy and warm and they grow up encouraged by everyone - INCLUDING JAYKIT. None of that “everyone looks at him with pity :(((((” shenanigans. If anyone suggested Jaykit was unfit for anything, Mama Ferncloud had some stern words for them.
Things play out mostly the same across the book. Jaypaw starts out his training with Brightheart and Hollypaw with Leafpool, but they do end up switching. For Jaypaw its not because he’s bad at being a warrior or because Spottedleaf is harassing him into it, but because he has been aware of the strange dreams he has and more than once has woken up in the dreams of other cats. He feels like he’s been getting signs from StarClan but he can’t make sense of them, and he likes the allure of being able to communicate with StarClan and have that position of power and respect in the Clan (which is reinforced, because the watering-down of the influence of medicine cats later series is frustrating). Hollypaw conversely realizes that being a medicine cat is far more lonely than she expected, and notices how lonely Leafpool clearly is, even if she isn’t open about it. Hollypaw doesn’t want that for herself and sees the fun the other apprentices have, so she agrees to become a warrior apprentice instead. Brightheart takes over her training.
Lionpaw doesn’t have a huge arc here, he’s mostly kind of a doofus who comes off arrogant due to his skills but starts to learn throughout his apprenticeship that just being a meathead isn’t going to get the other apprentices to like him. Him and Berrypaw have a friendly rivalry. The Sight ends with Jaypaw receiving the prophecy from StarClan.
Dark Eclipse: Borrowing the title from my Wind!Po3 au... this is when Sol is introduced. He arrives to the Clans, showing himself to lone warriors or small patrols, making minor predictions and claiming to be able to preform miracles. He mostly predicts cats futures - if they’ll find love, how many kits they’ll have, silly things like that. Cats start eating it up despite being suspicious of the loner, because their medicine cats don’t do that kind of thing and honestly, it’s fun. Sol is mysterious but friendly, keeping cats at an arm’s length while dangling information in front of them. He also generally positions himself as being very all-knowing of the history of the lake, sun-drown place, and the “ancient cats” that used to live here.
While Jaypaw is out collecting herbs on his own, he happens across a tunnel (by accident, from falling into it), where he meets a cat with no scent that leads him out. He finds the ancient stick, and wants to know more about what the tunnels are all about - so of course, he goes to Sol to learn from him. Sol is more than happy to teach Jaypaw about the history of the ancients in exchange for information about the clans today (under the guise that he is something of a historian and likes collecting information wherever he goes). Sol also has heard of Jaypaw’s prophecy, and he claims he wants to help Jaypaw understand it and grow into his power.
Lionpaw starts having dreams with Hawkfrost and Tigerstar, and while he doesn’t trust them, he DOES want to learn their fighting skill. They also seem to have some sense of his special abilities, and claim to want to help him better understand them. This is when Lionpaw’s power in the waking world starts to have more... uncomfortable tones. Lionpaw starts losing his temper easily, becomes more aggressive, and finally during a training session he unsheathes his claws to claw another apprentice. This lands him in trouble, and he’s told he has to spend a quarter-moon helping Leafpool and Jaypaw in the medicine cats’ den to learn how to take care of others. During this Jaypaw walks in a dream with him and catches him visiting Hawkfrost and Tigerstar. Afterwards, Jaypaw threatens to tell Firestar unless Lionpaw stops visiting them. Lionpaw doesn’t want to give up his training, but he doesn’t want to get in trouble with Firestar, either - so Jaypaw admits he has his own teacher who Lionpaw can visit.
Hollypaw, meanwhile, is adjusting to being a warrior apprentice. She’s unlike her brothers - she’s much friendlier than Jaypaw and more intelligent that Lionpaw, and she’s not bad at hunting or fighting but not particularly egotistical about it. She can be a stickler for the warrior code, but generally she gets along with the other apprentices and begins to become the ringleader of the group. She is notably distant from her brothers, though, which makes her upset but she isn’t sure how to fix it. Jaypaw is fixated on his medicine cat training and is inherently separated from her by his role, but Lionpaw has just been... tired and grouchy and mean. To make matters worse, he starts disappearing during the day, too! Hollypaw is fed up with this and stalks her brothers one day (feeling a bit hurt that they’ve been spending time together without her) and catches them meeting Sol. She finds this absolutely disgraceful - he’s a rogue, smart or not! Jaypaw tells her that he can help them understand the prophecy, which only infuriates her more - because why didn’t they tell her about it in the first place if that was the point of meeting him? Furious, she storms right off and reports them to Firestar. They are both in trouble now for leaving the territory and their training to talk to a rogue, and Firestar is especially concerned to hear they’ve been sharing information about the Clans with him. A ThunderClan patrol tries to track him down, but Sol seems to have vanished.
Sol later shows up at a Gathering (with mixed reviews from the audience - as it turns out, all four Clans have seen this mysterious loner, and some admire his knowledge while others are pissed off about this outsider frolicking across the territories distracting their warriors and NOW having the audacity to strut into the gathering). He says he’s going to make the sun go out. Cats are like “wtf????” and Sol repeats this and says he is more powerful than StarClan and will show the Clans that it is so. Cats grow angry and fearful, some even wanting to kill him for suggesting such a thing, and Sol just sort of smirks and says “If your StarClan is so powerful, then I suppose they’ll keep the sun lit tomorrow.” With that he takes off and cats are freaking out, clouds are covering the moon, and the Clans call off the Gathering.
Cut to the next day when things are progressing more or less normally (with some general nervousness). A WindClan patrol storms right through ThunderClan territory, claiming to have heard ThunderClan is harboring Sol. Of course, they’re not - and when WindClan is about to attack them, a ShadowClan patrol races to ThunderClan asking for help because RiverClan is attacking them for “harboring Sol”, which they claim not to be doing. WindClan turns on ShadowClan, ThunderClan is confused, fights are breaking out, its all around madness. A few hisses turns into all-out war, but no one knows whose side is fighting for whose. Someone cries out that Firestar is losing a life -
Then the sun goes out.
Outcast: This book picks right back up in the middle of the panic, with some cat shrieking that Firestar is dying. Thing is, no one is sure who killed him, because it’s chaotic and hard to see due to the, you know, black sun. Jaypaw is trying to get his way through the fray with Leafpool to make it to Firestar.
They don't make it in time. They get there and he's dead. Actually dead. Jaypaw is in shock, and Leafpool is shaking with grief—but Jaypaw catches a sense of rage in her.
"He had two lives left," she snarls. "He had two lives."
Jaypaw understands and is horrified. Firestar's wounds are fatal, but they're not horrific. Coming back from the loss of his eighth life should have healed him enough to survive through the ninth. Someone waited and killed him again.
The eclipse ends with Sol atop a tree, declaring he has proven himself to be stronger than StarClan. Cats are horrified by the aftermath of the short but bloody battle. All the Clans are calling for blood, until Blackstar admits that Sol clearly has knowledge that would benefit ShadowClan and brings him back to camp with him.
ThunderClan is feeling really low after everyone realizes Firestar was killed. Cats are willing to accept it was an accident until Leafpool reveals what she realized, and that just ramps them up to pissed. Cats pretty quickly jump to thinking it’s Sol, but Jaypaw isn’t sure. Sol was never aggressive, and he had seemed to be out of the fight. Jaypaw tries to say this with mixed effects. Lots of fingers are pointed, but Brambleclaw doesn’t want to start off his leadership attacking another Clan without being sure. There’s a bit of an early-to-mid book lag here, with cats trying to maintain normal Clan life but Very Stressed about the fact that their leader was murdered twice in battle. Aaaand cue the fire.
Fire scene plays out like canon. Ashfur traps the three and Squirrel reveals the truth to the horror of her kids. It’s a bit more emphasized here that he had some involvement with Firestar being trapped in the fox trap a while back - he specifically says “I just regret not staying to make sure the job was finished”. Lionblaze believes this means he killed Firestar in the battle.
A couple days pass. Ashfur’s body is discovered. Cats are FREAKING out thinking someone is trying to murder ThunderClan cats now. Bramblestar finally gets a patrol together to go to ShadowClan and demand they give up Sol—but ShadowClan won't have it. Things are just weird there, with Sol and other rogues just hanging out and Blackstar declaring ShadowClan is following Sol's wisdom now. Sol comes down and says he did not kill Ashfur or Firestar but is happy to help with their investigation. Hollyleaf and Lionblaze go along and Lionblaze INSISTS Sol must be lying. Hollyleaf is notably feeling eaten up inside from the reveal of not being Squirrel's kit, and starts to work out the whole truth. At the next Gathering, she jumps on the the tree and reveals everything—how Squirrelflight lies about being their mother, about Leafpool and Crowfeather. Chaos ensues. Hollyleaf runs away, and Lionblaze chases her.
"What's wrong with you?" he snarls. "You ruined everything! Do you have any idea what I did to protect us?"
Jayfeather catches up and sees his memory of Lionblaze killing Ashfur. (I think HE should be the one to kill Ashfur so Hollyleaf's breakdown/killing feels less contradictory and because it fits Lion's power + Ash was his mentor.) When he killed Ashfur, he basically beat him to a pulp until Ashfur admitted he was the one that killed Firestar and repeated he was just sorry he hadn’t done it when he last had the chance to hurt Squirrelflight. Jayfeather shares this with Hollyleaf, who is horrified by what her brother has done and is afraid of how angry he is. She runs off into a tunnel, which collapses, and Jay and Lion believe she’s dead. Lionblaze feels a tremendous amount of guilt, believing he just killed his sister. Jayfeather is shaken and asks how the prophecy can still come true without her, which makes Lionblaze angry - “Don’t you care that our sister just died?”
The book ends on a dark tone, with Lionblaze being eaten up by guilt from Hollyleaf’s death, and not speaking to Jayfeather. Jayfeather is upset that Hollyleaf is dead but is extremely concerned for the sake of the prophecy (to the point of being half in denial about her death - thinking she simply can’t be dead because the prophecy needs her). The story ends with him helping Whitewing birth her kits, Dovekit and Ivykit, and when Cloudtail comes to visit his daughter, he is struck by the recollection that Whitewing is Firestar’s kin as well, making her daughters “kin of his kin”. He feels more hopeful after this, thinking to himself that he will keep a close eye on the kits so that they aren’t lost like Hollyleaf. This also leaves some plot threads for OotS to resolve - Sol isn’t gone, ShadowClan is clearly starting to have issues, and the Clan still isn’t sure who killed Ashfur.

Tumblr media
The next day was very quiet. Kuroo had gone about his regular Sunday routine, all while waiting for a text from (Y/n) telling him if she and Bokuto had talked and how it went.
He had heard no yelling through the walls, so that was a good sign. He didn’t want them to fight, of course. Bokuto was his friend, and (Y/n) was obviously very special to him.
He continued waiting until the sun went down. He was sitting out on his balcony for the assignment he had mentioned to (Y/n) the night before.
The chilly autumn air sent him inside to retrieve a blanket. His phone outside finally gave the tone he had been waiting so long for. He almost crashed into the balcony railing when he went to retrieve it.
Can I come over?
Yes. Always.
Kuroo was at his front door before (Y/n) even knocked. He opened it to see (Y/n) standing there, eyes puffy and cheeks wet.
The two stood there silently, looking at one another. Neither knowing what to say.
Kuroo wordlessly opened his arms. (Y/n) wrapped her arms around his waist without hesitation and buried her face in his chest. He carefully pulled her into the apartment before closing the door behind them.
(Y/n) squirmed slightly, prompting Kuroo to loosen his grip. She wiped her eyes and sighed deeply, looking up at him.
“I take it you and Bokuto talked...?” He asked, watching her nod in response.
“Yeah... what was the assignment?”
Kuroo smiled slightly before ushering her to the balcony. “I just have to get a picture of the lunar eclipse for extra credit... so you can’t change the subject.”
A small smile tugged at (Y/n)’s lips as she sat in one of the lawn chairs Kuroo had set out. He draped the blanket over their laps and gave her a look prompting her to speak.
“I told him how I feel.” she said simply.
Kuroo raised an eyebrow at her. “And how do you feel?”
(Y/n) stared up at him, hoping he would budge and not make her talk about it. Eventually she gave a sigh and turned away from him to look at the sky.
“I told him that he’s a great friend... he loves hard... but it’s only when I’m hurting that he shows it.” (Y/n) explained, “It was kinda different back at Fukurodani... he was always close with me, so sweet... Then after I broke my ankle it all changed. Once I healed he just dropped off the face of the earth until graduation... when he heard my mom didn’t bother coming... Then every time I was miserable he was there, but never any other time... It kinda made me want to always be miserable, yknow?” she asked, quickly glancing at Kuroo.
“My mom has always been the same way... Two people who I thought loved me only do it when I’m suffering. That’s no way to live... sabotaging yourself so you can feel love.” (Y/n) began to tremble and her voice wavered.
Kuroo gently wrapped an arm around her, pulling her close as she fought her tears.
“I’m just so tired... I want to feel loved always, not just when I’m in pain.” She sniffled, wiping at her eyes with the sleeve of her jacket.
Kuroo nodded, “And that’s reasonable... you shouldn’t have to ask for affection from the people who claim to care for you. They should just give it to you...no strings attached.”
(Y/n) sighed softly and slightly leaned away from him, causing him to loosen his arm around her. “Yeah... and that’s what I told him...”
“How’d he take it?” He asked, watching her adjust herself in the chair.
“He was upset... he didn’t know he was doing it, so I can’t really blame him... but I told him I don’t want to see him for a while...” She said.
Kuroo could sense there was more she wanted to say, and she wasn’t saying what was on her mind. “(Y/n)?”
She fought the urge to bite her lip, instead she fiddled with the blanket. “I don’t think I should see you for a while either... at least, not the way you want to see me...”
Kuroo felt his stomach twist. “Oh...”
“I like you a lot, I really do,” (Y/n) hurriedly added, “I just... I think I loved Bokuto... I can’t just dive into something with you. Otherwise you’re just a rebound... I don’t want that...”
Kuroo frowned and looked down at his lap. “I understand... I won’t push you... as long as we can continue being friends...”
“Yeah... Of course...” She said, mimicking him and staring down at herself.
They both went quiet, neither one knowing what else there was to say. Kuroo opted to watch the sky for the eclipse, knowing if he looked at her he would probably do something stupid.
“Why am I here?” (Y/n) suddenly asked, looking up at Kuroo.
“Like...” He paused, “on this earth...?”
(Y/n) couldn’t help but chuckle, “No... on your balcony... Why do you want me here...”
Kuroo finally looked back at her, feeling like his heart was ready to lurch out of his chest. How was he supposed to reveal all these feelings without ruining their agreement?
“I want to know you... I think we all deserve to feel known by someone...” He said, staring deep into her eyes.
(Y/n) sniffled softly before forcing her eyes off him and to the eclipse. “It’s started... Want me to get the picture?”
Kuroo bit his lip, ignoring the prick of pain and grabbing his phone. “I was just going to get it myself...”
“Shouldn’t you be in it? So your professor knows you didn’t just get it off the internet?” She asked.
Kuroo smiled slightly before handing her the phone and posing with his back to the moon. He had a sad smile in the picture, he was hoping he wouldn’t have to look at it aside from showing it to his professor.
--------------------------------------
(Y/n) and Kuroo continued on as if their kiss had never happened. They passed notes in their classes, studied together, saw movies and ate meals together.
It was hard for Kuroo not to flirt every now and then, especially with how playful the two always were. But he minded his boundaries, knowing if he didn’t she would be hurt.
Before they knew it, the end of the semester had hit and it was time to leave for winter break. Kuroo’s family lived in the city, he would only have to take a cab to go home and visit.
(Y/n), however, would have to take a train home and would be gone the entire break.
Kuroo hoped that would be an adequate amount of time for her to sort things out. He had offered to take her out on a small ‘friend date,’ as she called it. Then he would take her to the train station the next morning to bid her farewell.
He opted to take her to the ramen shop by their apartments. He knew if he took her somewhere too nice it would come off as a date-date. Plus, the shop had enough special memories to compensate for the lack of mood-lighting or general romantic ambiance.
They agreed to go after their class’ Christmas party they convinced their professor to host. Their classroom was decorated with all sorts of Christmas decorations, one of the abandoned side-tables had been covered with all sorts of treats, and presents had been set in one of the corners of the room.
Kuroo wasn’t too comfortable leaving the gift he had gotten for (Y/n) there, especially since this was the class they had with Kaito. He figured it would be best to give it to her himself during the gift exchange.
They spent the majority of the party together, much to Kuroo’s relief given that Kaito was very much present. He hadn’t caused anymore trouble for Kuroo or (Y/n), but that didn’t mean Kuroo didn’t still have his guard up.
Kuroo’s shoulders had tensed, the feeling of daggers being glared at him sending a chill up his spine. The sensation was cut short once (Y/n) placed a gentle hand on Kuroo’s shoulder, bringing his attention to her.
“Hey, something got you distracted?” She asked, a look of concern on her face.
Kuroo relaxed at her touch, giving her a small, reassuring smile. “Just feels kind of awkward...”
(Y/n) smiled slightly, removing her hand from his shoulder and tapping her fingers against the paper cup of hot cocoa she had been given. “It’s only awkward if you make it awkward, Tetsu.”
Kuroo sighed softly, taking a sugar cookie from the table nearby and biting into it. “Well, most of the class knows I beat the shit out of Kaito. Sooo it’s kind of everyone’s fault it’s awkward, no?”
(Y/n) rolled her eyes playfully and lightly nudged him with her elbow. “It’s hard to forget when you keep reminding them.”
Kuroo chuckled and shrugged his shoulders. “Not my fault I’m such a badass.”
(Y/n) raised an eyebrow at him, smirking slightly as she reached forward and wiped a few crumbs from the corner of his lip with her thumb. “Oh yeah, such a badass.”
Kuroo blushed and chuckled slightly, finishing off the cookie and wiping his hand on his pants.
“Why don’t we get out of here...?” (Y/n) asked, stepping closer to Kuroo and lowering her voice. “This is fun and all but I’m getting really hungry...”
Kuroo smiled slightly, assuring her he’d come up with a good excuse to leave the party before the gift exchange. He told their professor he had planned an ‘extra special dinner’ for the two of them, and that he saw no gifts for them in the pile anyway. The professor sent them off with two small goodie bags and wished them a Merry Christmas.
Kuroo couldn’t help the rush of adrenaline he felt when he saw (Y/n) wearing the jacket he had lent her a couple months prior. The black material complimented the red sweater-dress and her black boots perfectly. It took him a minute to realize he had been staring at her, and it took him even longer to stop himself.
He finally looked away when (Y/n) held her hand out to him. The coy look she gave him told him she noticed his staring. He took her hand, hoping she would interpret the redness in his cheeks as a side effect from the cold rather than her touch.
At one point during the walk (Y/n) leaned in closer to him, whining about her choice of clothing that night. Kuroo sighed dramatically as he pulled her to a stop in the middle of the sidewalk.
He took off his scarf and wrapped it around her, smiling at her despite her protests. “You already took my jacket, it’s my official mission to keep you from becoming a (Y/n)-cicle.”
(Y/n) eventually caved, keeping on his scarf the rest of the walk to the ramen shop.
Once they arrived, they picked their usual secluded table. Kuroo ordered their food, already having memorized (Y/n)’s usual order. He joined her at their table, stopping in place when he noticed a wrapped gift in his seat.
“And what’s this?” He smirked, picking up the present and setting it on the table so he could sit.
“Just a little something I had in my bag...” (Y/n) smiled, looking between him and the box.
Kuroo hummed softly, zipping open his bag and pulling out (Y/n)’s gift. “What a coincidence! I just so happened to have this in my bag!” He set the box on the table, sliding it towards (Y/n).
“You open yours fiiiirst! I wanna see your reaction!” She said, bouncing in her chair excitedly.
Kuroo chuckled before taking the present and ripping the paper away. He opened the box, revealing a small, colorful voucher nestled in red tissue paper. He picked up the card, reading through it carefully before his jaw dropped.
“I didn’t think they even had one of these...” He mumbled.
(Y/n) smiled proudly, “They do now! A couple of cooking podcasters I follow had a discount code. You are now one of the first subscribers of the Mackin-on-Mackerel club! Now you get a box every month with ingredients for a new mackerel recipe!”
Kuroo swore he could feel a tear in his eye. It was too early to say he loved her. But damn. He felt it.
“Do you need a minute, Tetsu? Cuz I’d like to open my gift now.” (Y/n) teased, taking the small box and looking over the gold wrapping paper.
Kuroo wiped at his fake tears, earning a giggle from (Y/n). He composed himself and motioned towards her gift. “Have at it!”
(Y/n) smiled excitedly and tore at the paper. Kuroo noticed the look in her eyes shift when she read the logo on the small, black jewelry box. She slowly opened it, her eyes softening when she saw the small gold necklace inside.
The delicate gold chain sparkled under the Christmas lights adorning the walls of the shop. A small pendant of a jade crescent moon with gold accents was the centerpiece of the gift. Kuroo would never tell her how much it cost or that it was custom-made by a family friend.
Kuroo shifted slightly in his chair, trying and failing to hide his nervousness. “Do you like it...?”
(Y/n) carefully held the pendant in her hands, studying its beauty before a smile erupted on her face. She bit her lip and nodded quickly. “I love it... It’s perfect...”
Kuroo breathed a sigh of relief. His mind trailed off to the second gift in his bag, conflicted on whether or not he should give it to her.
“Will you help me put it on?”
Oh fuck. OH FUCK.
Kuroo quickly nodded and got out of his chair, moving behind (Y/n) and carefully taking the chain as she lifted her hair for him. The sight of her bare neck had him internally hollering for help. He clasped the chain and moved back to his seat, smiling softly as she admired it.
“It suits you...” He sighed, the moment cut short as their order number was called.
Kuroo could sense the aura shift between the two after he gave her that gift. Yes, they still talked and joked as usual, but there was a look in (Y/n)’s eyes that had him enveloped in a sweet fog every time he met her gaze.
The walk to their apartment was silent. (Y/n) had taken his hand the second they walked out into the cold, and she leaned into him slightly as they walked. As if the tension couldn’t get thicker, it began to snow.
This was all one big cliche but dammit, Kuroo liked cliches. He liked being cheesy and romantic. But if (Y/n) wasn’t ready, he wouldn’t push her.
They made it to their apartments without any romantic incidents. Kuroo could tell there was something (Y/n) wanted to say. Instead she wished him goodnight before going into her apartment.
--------------------------------------
“You’re sure you have everything? Keys? Wallet? Phone? Taser? Drugs?”
“Kuroo! Shh!” (Y/n) hissed, lightly smacking Kuroo’s arm as he snickered. “You’re gonna get me kicked out of the station.”
Kuroo snickered, “Relax, no one heard me. Everyone’s too busy getting to their trains.” He motioned towards all the people hurriedly passing by the bench they sat on.
(Y/n) sighed quietly before snuggling into him. Kuroo smiled softly, noticing the necklace he had given her placed over the black turtleneck she wore. At least she wasn’t hiding it.
“How are you feeling about seeing your dad?” he asked.
(Y/n) gave him a small smile before glancing down at her phone. “He called me twice this morning to make sure I had everything and was ready to come home... I’m really excited to see him. I think this is what I need.”
Kuroo smiled, “I’m sure you’re going to have a lot of fun with him...” Sure, Kuroo was sad (Y/n) would be leaving, but he knew how much she was looking forward to being home for the break.
Before he could say anything else, the train they had been waiting for finally pulled into the station and began boarding.
Kuroo helped carry (Y/n)’s bags to the train, stopping just short of the door and leaving enough room for the other passengers to board. (Y/n) gave him a questioning glance.
“Before you go, I wanted to give you one last gift.” Kuroo said, fishing around in his jacket pocket.
“Is it my hashbrowns that you stole this morning?” (Y/n) asked, raising an eyebrow at him.
Kuroo pulled an envelope out of his coat, holding it out to her silently. She slowly took it from him, looking over the plain red paper before looking back at him.
“I didn’t want to give it to you last night...” He admitted, staring down at the envelope. “Just... don’t read it until Christmas, okay?”
(Y/n) bit her lip before slowly nodding and putting the envelope in her jacket pocket. “Okay... I can get my bags from here, thank you so much for dropping me off.”
“No problem,” He smiled. “And just let me know when you’re coming back. I’ll pick you up.”
(Y/n) smiled and pulled him into a tight hug. He quickly returned the embrace, inhaling her scent one last time. “Merry Christmas, Tetsu...”
“Merry Christmas, (Y/n)...”
The two slowly parted. Kuroo thought he saw a tear slip down her cheek, but she quickly picked up her bags and got on the train.
Kuroo backed farther onto the platform, watching as the doors shut and the passengers all took their seats. He could see (Y/n) from her seat, her eyes never leaving him as the train slowly departed. She quickly raised her hand, giving him a small wave that he returned. Then the train took off, and (Y/n) was gone.
--------------------------------------
Kuroo would be lying if he said he wasn’t nervous when Christmas rolled around. He was thankfully distracted by his family, so the fact that (Y/n) hadn’t texted or called about the letter didn’t have him completely dying on the inside.
He wasn’t sure if he regretted giving her the letter or not. Surely she would have told him if she was upset, right?
One day went by. Then another. And another. Suddenly, there was only a week before classes resumed and Kuroo still hadn’t heard from (Y/n).
She had told him the day before Christmas when to pick her up from the train station, but that was all.
He was at the station about 30 minutes before she was due to arrive. He thought if he was alone in the cold for long enough, he would be able to calm himself down.
Once the train pulled into the station, he realized he was wrong. He felt like he was about to have a heart attack just at the sight of the train. He stood up, holding up the small sign he had made for (Y/n) in hopes she would see it amongst the crowd of people waiting for their loved ones.
He felt like his heart stopped when he saw her. She was wearing his jacket, her hair had been cut and styled differently, her pendent stood out over the sweater she was sporting. She was still wearing the necklace, that was a good sign.
She looked around the crowd, stopping when she finally caught sight of Kuroo. Her expression was unreadable at first. Kuroo gulped down his anxiety and forced a very nervous smile.
(Y/n)’s expression completely changed.
She smiled brightly and ran towards him, her boots clicking loudly against the floor as she approached. Kuroo’s heart began pounding in his chest, his smile turned genuine.
(Y/n) dropped her bags to the floor and practically leapt towards him, hugging his neck as he held her waist and spun her.
Kuroo wasn’t sure when he felt (Y/n) press her lips to his, he just suddenly felt her warmth enveloping him as she tightened her arms around him. He eagerly returned the kiss, lowering her onto her tip-toes before pulling back.
He rested his forehead against hers, breathing hard as (Y/n) smiled and pressed a small kiss to the corner of his lips.
“I take it you read my letter...?” He murmured, smiling wider as she giggled and leaned into him.
“Yes... Yes I did...” She sighed, brushing a strand of his hair out of his face.
“And...?”
(Y/n) smiled and pulled him into another kiss, but not before mumbling a line from the letter he had written. It was the one that stuck with her most, the one she read before bed every night after she first opened it Christmas morning.
胸がはち切れそうで. It’s something I heard a long time ago, whispered between two lovers dancing in the moonlight. When I look at you, you are all I see, and love fills my heart. All I hear is 胸がはち切れそうで - My chest is about to burst.
“胸がはち切れそうで...”
--------------------------------------
“I’m too rusty, I’ll be awful!” (Y/n) whined, reluctantly following Kuroo through their campus.
“(Y/n), I talked to the other players, they won’t mind!” Kuroo assured her, adjusting his gym-bag over his shoulder. “Besides, they think you’re something of a celebrity. They want autographs.”
(Y/n) gave him a look of horror before covering her face and groaning. “Nooooo! I’m going back home!”
Kuroo stopped at the doors of the gym, turning to look at (Y/n) who had opted to stare up at a blooming cherry tree rather than the intimidating building to her left.
He sighed softly, gently taking her hand and pulling her to face him. “You know I’d never force you into anything you wouldn’t want... but you said you wanted to practice, this is the only way.”
(Y/n) pouted, hoping Kuroo would change his mind, but he didn’t seem to be budging.
She sighed before leaning up and pecking his lips. “You’re lucky you’re cute... let’s do this.”
Kuroo smirked and opened the doors for (Y/n). He led her onto the court where the volleyball club usually practiced. The group wasn’t too large, some people weren’t back on campus yet and were still enjoying their spring.
It was just enough people to make (Y/n) nervous, though.
Numerous people greeted Kuroo, then quickly flocked to him to say hello to the girl they’d heard so much about.
To (Y/n)’s surprise, some of them really did ask for autographs and pictures. Thankfully, no one talked about the accident that blocked her from finals, rather they talked about her amazing career before that. She could feel herself becoming slightly overwhelmed until Kuroo pulled her to the side to stretch in peace.
A familiar face entered (Y/n)’s field of vision, causing her to stop mid-step. Kuroo straightened up, knowing he would be there, but not knowing how (Y/n) would handle the interaction.
Bokuto stopped a couple feet in front of (Y/n), looking between her and Kuroo. “Hey...”
“Hey...” (Y/n) mumbled, shifting slightly under Bokuto’s gaze.
“So... you’re going to be joining us?” He asked, noting her old volleyball shoes she was currently wearing.
(Y/n) nodded, “Yeah... if you think you can handle it, of course.”
Anyone who didn’t know (Y/n) would have thought she was challenging Bokuto, trying to be rude and intimidate him.
But Bokuto slowly smiled. He knew that tone. He crossed his arms over his chest, raising an eyebrow at her. “Oh yeah? Well you’ve been out of the game a while, I’ve learned some new tricks.”
“I’ve seen how you play, I think I’ll be fine.” (Y/n) smirked, placing her hands on her hips.
Kuroo laughed before getting between the two and lightly nudging them. “Hey now, don’t get so eager. I’m putting us on the same team first game. You’ll have plenty of time to one-up each other then.”
“Ughh, how lame. I guess I can still show you up even if we’re on the same team.” Bokuto groaned.
“You’re on.” (Y/n) smiled.
Kuroo and Bokuto were both in awe at how (Y/n) was playing. It was as if she never left the court. The chemistry between the trio was electric, Kuroo knew signing them on the same team was the right move. With his blocking AND Bokuto and (Y/n)’s spikes, their team was unstoppable.
Their setter tossed the ball to Bokuto, and he spiked it perfectly only for their libero to receive it at the last second. The ball flew high, so high Kuroo thought it would go unreceived.
Suddenly, (Y/n) emerged seemingly from out of nowhere, jumped as high as she could, and spiked the ball back over the net, getting the winning point for their team.
“HEY HEY HEY! THERE SHE IS!!!” Bokuto cheered, hugging (Y/n) tightly and lifting her off the ground. The rest of the team whooped for her and high-fived her, bringing a bright smile to her face, one Kuroo hadn’t seen since he saw her play all those years ago.
She was shining like the sun, so many people around her complimenting her play style and her skill. (Y/n) looked past all of them and towards Kuroo, who was smiling at her proudly, his adoration for her clear in his eyes.

Billboard #1s 1983
Under the cut.
Toto -- "Africa" -- February 5, 1983
This song becoming massively popular recently sort of mystifies me. But maybe it shouldn't; the music is very pretty, and we've been short on popular music that goes for "pretty" for a long time. The lyrics... I really don't know. The best explanation I've seen was someone joking on Tumblr that maybe the narrator's a werewolf. I'm sure that wasn't the intent, but it's what I'm going with. It is a good song, entirely because of the music.
Patti Austin and James Ingram -- "Baby, Come to Me" -- February 19, 1983
I'm not sure I've ever heard this song before. It's a romantic duet. It's not annoying or anything, it's fine, but now that I've heard it I think I'm probably about to forget it again immediately.
Michael Jackson -- "Billie Jean" -- March 5, 1983
This song, I've heard. A whole hell of a lot. Like everyone else, we had the Thriller album (or tape, rather.) Actually I had it -- for some reason, Thriller was seen as some kind of child's first pop album. Every kid I knew had it. (And since seeing Leaving Neverland, that has been very creepy to me.) As for me, I'd put it on and dance, especially to this song. I pretty much understood what the song was about, and even got the "His eyes looked like mine" line. I didn't have an opinion on whether or not the kid was his son. It didn't matter; it was entirely about the music. Which is truly great.
Dexys Midnight Runners -- "Come On Eileen" -- April 23, 1983
Until the last couple years, I didn't entirely know what this song was about, because I couldn't understand Kevin Rowland's weird singing outside the chorus. I got that he wanted Eileen, and that this was about the combination of arrogance and horniness of youth. I did not know about all the references to the previous generation's pop culture, with an obvious inference that they felt the same way at one time. Also about Margaret Thatcher's intentional destruction of her own country's society. You don't have to think about any of that to enjoy the song if you don't want to, though. It's a fun dance song as well as being complex lyrically.
Michael Jackson -- "Beat It" -- April 30, 1983
This is the Michael Jackson song I remember being played on the radio by far the most when I was a child. It's basically the main background song of a couple years of my childhood. It's a hard-driving song about how you should run away from a physical fight rather than die. "It doesn't matter/ Who's wrong or right." Yes. It's rock, and it's dance, and it's... probably really great? I don't know, some things are too formative.
David Bowie -- "Let's Dance" -- May 21, 1983
"Put on your red shoes and dance the blues" makes no sense. But this is David Bowie; he knew that. It's part of the point. While this song is perfectly feasable to dance to, it's not really a dance song. It's achingly romantic and not the tiniest bit soppy, with music that's both accessible and fascinating. And my god Bowie could sing. I love it so much.
Irene Cara -- "Flashdance... What A Feeling" -- May 28, 1983
I didn't see Flashdance until college, when my roommates decided we would watch a bunch of cheesy 80s movies because it seemed a brilliant thing to do. It was, actually. Some of them even turned out to be good. Not Flashdance. Flashdance is memorably stupid, at least -- it doesn't hold back. It's extremely entertaining because it's deeply unintentionally hilarious. This song, though, I've heard a lot since it came out. The song is much better than the movie. It's got a wide-eyed optimism that's appealing, and the music is fun.
The Police -- "Every Breath You Take" -- July 9, 1983
I remember people periodically insisting that many, many women don't understand this song and think it's just romantic. I have never met any of these women. I have a feeling it was only a few, and that got blown up into some kind of crisis, as things do. Especially when people can imagine angelic airheaded women being dumb and somehow inviting abuse from those scary scary men. That's a favorite hobby for many. Anyway. It's a really good song that gets into the mindset of a really bad man -- or of a man who's currently imagining being really bad but is going to wake up, deal with his hangover, and get on with life. It's not a comfortable song, and that is good. Also Sting's hot.
Eurythmics -- "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" -- September 3, 1983
Usually repetitive songs drive me nuts. This song is incredibly repetitive lyrically. I love the lyrics, though. And musically, it changes up just enough to keep my interest. It's almost hypnotic. Apparently, Annie Lennox can do whatever she likes with me. Speaking of "some of them want to be abused"...
Michael Sembello -- "Maniac" --  September 10, 1983
The original demo of this song was about a serial killer, and it sounds like it, with the Psycho-like musical parts. It's not a dance song at all. Michael Sembello worked with Stevie Wonder during his best years, but he's no Stevie Wonder. He has that 70s light rock white guy voice, and it doesn't fit this song. If he'd handed this to another singer, it would have been better. Though still goofy, because it's music about a serial killer wedded to a story about a dancer. Many of the lines don't seem to have been changed either: "On the ice-blue line of insanity/ Is a place most never see." And  okay, that's a good line; I wouldn't want to leave it out either.
Also my aunt is a professional dancer (mostly choreographer now), so I've seen quite a bit into the professional dance world, and it is seriously unhealthy. It seems to be getting better, at least in modern dance, but the reason my aunt didn't go farther as a ballerina and switched to modern dance is that she could not get skinny enough for the fashion in ballet, no matter what she did. We're a muscular family with solid bones, and she couldn't get rid of that. She's got an eating disorder still though. Professional dance is harsh and terrible, and probably kills more women than serial killers do.
That's what I think of when I hear this song.
Billy Joel -- "Tell Her About It" -- September 24, 1983
Billy Joel's best songs didn't make it to #1, but that's almost always the way. This bouncy throwback of a song is still fun. With most excellent advice: "Tell her about it/ Tell her everything you feel/ Give her every reason/ To accept that you're for real." (It occurs to me that my husband is the first guy I dated who did that actually while we were dating, as opposed to waiting until after we broke up. Most of the guys I dated did not take in "I will not get back together with you if we break up." Not my fault; I told them about it.) Anyway, this isn't as good as "Big Shot," or "You May Be Right," or "My Life," or a whole lot of other Billy Joel songs I like a lot better, but it's pretty good.
Bonnie Tyler -- "Total Eclipse of the Heart" -- October 1, 1983
Melodrama, I love it. This song is so Great -- big, fantastical, unembarrassed, and awesome in both meanings of the term. Bonnie Tyler knows her strengths and has no hesitation about using that huge voice, and yet she doesn't oversing, either. The lyrics? Hell if I know. To me, it sounds like that part of a relationship where you're losing yourself and can't think about anything but the other person, and especially about having sex with the other person. But whatever else it is, it's poetry. And big thunder crashes. Which is a lot like falling in love. It's not necessarily happy. It just is.
Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton -- "Islands In the Stream" -- October 29, 1983
Going from "Total Eclipse of the Heart" to this song induces emotional whiplash. The opening goes "Baby, when I met you/ There was peace unknown." That's the exact opposite of "Total Eclipse of the Heart." What is the same as "Total Eclipse of the Heart" is that the lyrics make no actual sense -- but of course they don't, this thing was written by the Bee Gees. Nonsensical lyrics can be poetic, but the Bee Gees didn't do poetry, at least not good poetry. Oh well, it's probably their most tolerable song. It's a sweet and light song, and I'm sure the narrators will be very happy together. They sound exceedingly "emotionally healthy." But as art, I prefer the "Total Eclipse of the Heart" take. Also I think this song might have been better with just Dolly Parton. Kenny Rogers was good, but he couldn't match Dolly.
Lionel Richie -- "All Night Long" -- November 12, 1983
Lionel Richie puts on a fake Jamaican accent for this thing. Also he makes up pseudo-African chants. I'm not going to go all "j'accuse!", at least not of problematicicity. No, I am accusing him instead of being annoying. Also dull. This is a party song, but an extremely boring one. Also Richie kind of tries to do an "ow" thing, obviously inspired by Michael Jackson, but of course it doesn't work. It's still not terrible. Unlike all the gloop Richie made, I can listen to the whole thing. The drums --  or drum machine, rather -- have a neat beat, and there are some good horns and other musical touches.
Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson -- "Say Say Say" -- December 10, 1983
Well this is weird. I can't remember ever having heard this song before. The song is about begging someone not to "play games with my affection." And it sounds like the two men are singing to each other, regardless of the lyric about getting through to a "girl." It's not bad -- Michael Jackson gives Paul McCartney the musical edge that he'd lost as soon as he left the Beatles. Strong beat, harmonica and all. But I'm not going to seek it out, either. I think the beat's too repetitive. Also it feels too busy.
BEST OF 1983 -- "Let's Dance" by David Bowie, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler, and "Sweet Dreams" by The Eurythmics. Great year for the pop charts. WORST OF 1983 -- There aren't any that I think are truly terrible this year, so I guess I'll go with "Baby, Come to Me," because as predicted, I have already forgotten it.

A/n: So this is what inspired my story “The Hybrid” so I had to do it. Also the pairing only refers to the certain part. The pairings crossed out are the ones that will come in another part. The majority of this series will take place during Eclipse. Please note that everything in italics is a flashback.
Important! I have made some changes to parts three and two, they are minor but important. So you do not have to re read them, unless you want too, I will briefly explain. After some thinking I decided that the twins are going to be equally as powerful. Which means that Jessica is also a shape shifter and Nik can us magic just as well as his sister. Demetri will also be playing a key role but I go into more detail in this imagine. You will also get to see just how powerful the twins are.

     “Again!” Claire squealed, clapping her tiny hands together in childhood glee as I turned the multi coloured stars that were raining around us into snowflakes. From the kitchen Sam sighed, rolling his eyes at the sight of the perfectly formed snowflakes that were covering his living room carpet but said nothing. Even Sam fell victim to Claire’s smile and endless giggles. I was so caught up in the young girl, that I didn’t notice when a young boy and girl, who were clearly related, enter the small home. I only noticed that they were there when I felt a sudden powerful blast of magic coming from behind me. Instinctively I passed a confused Claire to Quil before jumping up and turning around, trying to pinpoint the source of the magic. Almost at once I noticed Nik, who was staring with wide eyes at the girl who was still in the doorway.
    “Uh Leah?” The boy, who I am assuming was Seth since he and Leah were the only members of the pack I had yet to meet, asked the young girl, poking the girl in the shoulder. “Are you okay?”
   “If I am right, I believe she has imprinted on my brother.” The moment I said it, I knew it was true. The powerful burst of magic I had felt only seconds before, was warm and glowing, the kind I felt twice times before. One when mama met Papa, who was her true love. Then again when the bond between Niklaus and I strengthened due to the magic. It was the feeling of two souls coming together, the feeling of a soul bond coming together. Now that I was aware of it, I began to worry. I hadn’t felt the bond that linked Jake and I form, which suddenly scared me. Was this all wrong, was it just a mistake and I wasn’t actually Jake’s imprint.
  “Jake, Y/n is worrying about something.” Nik sighed, not once breaking his eye contact with Leah. “Like she is on the verge of a full blown breakdown.”
   “Y/n, honey what’s wrong?” Jake whispered as he crossed the room towards me, pulling me tight against him the moment he reached me.
  “The bond. Jake I didn’t feel the bond. This, all of this could be a mistake. I could..”
   “Honey calm down. It’s okay. Think about it darling, Leah and Nik are both shapeshifters, before all this happened Nik was just like us and that magnified right? So what happened is that you felt the magic of two shifters imprinting. You were a witch before you were turned. I’m not nor have I ever been soo.”
   “Sooo I may not have felt the bond because we are two different types of Supernatural creatures?”
   “Exactly baby girl. It’s okay.” He answered, kissing my forehead softly. “It doesn’t mean a thing baby. It doesn’t mean it’s a mistake, just that you didn’t feel it because it’s a different type of magic.” I sighed, leaning against his chest in relief. Just the idea that I could one day lose what Jake and I have was enough to make me hysterical.
   “Also, your a witch. You don’t create a bond between two souls by looking at someone, but when you open your soul to them physically. Remember it wasn’t until papa first kissed mama that they discovered the truth?” Nik explained, surprising me by reaching my side. “Your sudden distress broke me from my daze. Leave it to you to be the only thing that matters more than my imprint.”
    “So what your saying is to prove this to her, I have to kiss her?” Jake asked, smiling widely when I pulled back enough to look up at him.
   “Yes.. I mean no.. I mean..”
   “He means why don’t you two go somewhere to be alone for a bit while I get to know my imprint huh?” Leah asked, winking at me as she came to a stop beside Nik.
   “No! I mean yes I want to know you, but no to them going off on their own!” Nik protested, his cries of protest only growing louder as Jake and I hurried from Sam’s house. A quick glance behind me assured me that it was Leah, who was holding him back by the arm, that kept Nik from rushing out after us.
    “Your brother needs to relax.” Jake chuckled as he opened the passenger door of the rabbit for me.
   “Yeah but the chances of that happening are slim.” I chuckled, smiling as I slipped into the rabbit. I could hear Jake laughing as he quickly ran to the drivers side door, slipping in beside me with a smile wide enough that seemed to stop my heart. In the short amount of time that I had known Jake, that smile had became the most important thing in the world.
    “So to the beach?” Jake offered, smiling brilliantly at me when I nodded eagerly.
   “So wanna hear something that my brother doesn’t know about me?” I asked, giggling when Jake instantly nodded.
    “That my sweetest love is an understatement. Tell me.”
    “Well it’s why I fell in love with wolves. It was before we moved to Salem. We use to live in this cabin in the middle of the woods, it was right on the bank of this little creek. It was the most breathtaking sight. Anyway I use to sit there at night, just watching as the animals came to drink from the creek. One night my parents and grandmother were fighting. I can’t remember what it was about but I can remember how badly the screams upset me. So I did what I usually did. I slipped outside and sat by the creek. I didn’t move until the screaming stopped. It was then that I noticed him. He was this patchy ratty little man that I had never seen before.’
   ‘He was watching me and that’s when I realized that I was wearing only the shift that I wore to bed. Before I could do anything though this man attacked me, he threw me to the ground with his hand wrapped tightly around my neck and tried to rip my shift up. Before he could start doing anything though, this large black wolf jumped out of the woods besides me and attacked him. My parents found me then and had me wrapped in a blanket between them, when I noticed that the wolf didn’t break the skin. There was no blood, still my father was about to shot him when my grandmother came running out and told him to stop, that this wolf was my spirit animal and that he had came to protect me. The wolf never left, he stayed with me until he died a few months before we had to run out of Salem.”
    “Why did you never tell Nik this?” Jake asked, though I noticed that his knuckles were white from where they were gripping the steering wheel.
   “Are you kidding me? If Nik knew he would go berserk!” I laughed, imaging all to clearly just how well my brother would take to this news, even after all this time. “He would rip me a new one, not to mention the never ending lecture I would get about going out in the middle night by myself.”
   “Yeah well, he has a point.” Before I could answer him my phone went off, the sharp ringing ran through the rabbit. I knew at once that it was Emmett, I had been expecting this call ever since he left the house with Rose.
   “Hello Emmett.” I sang into the phone, giggling at his overly cheerful greeting.
   “Hello my little hybrid princess, Rose and I are here to take you and Niklaus home.”
   “We aren’t going home Em, at least not right now. Nik’s imprinted on a member of Jake’s pack, you remember Leah? Anyway, while he is getting to know Leah, Jake and I are off to the beach.”
    “Alone? As in no one else is going with you?” Emmett demanded, growling when I began to laugh. I can picture all to easily how he looked right now, panicked at the very idea of my being alone with a boy he still deemed as dangerous. Despite the assurance that he would not hurt me, Emmett and the rest of the family didn’t like me spending time alone with someone who could turn into a wolf when angry.
   “Yes Emmett.” I sighed, rolling my eyes playfully at Jake. “I have too many over protective brothers.” I sighed, earning a laugh from Jake and a growl from Emmett.
   “Why is Nik... ROSE GIVE ME BACK THE PHONE!”
     “Hey sweetie, you and Jake have fun, remember if he starts shaking back away or cast a spell to protective yourself. I’ll deal with Emmett and the others on one condition.” Rose said softly, ignoring Emmett’s cries of disbelief.
    “Is it that I promise to come home?”
   “Yes. We love you both, even if you can turn us into small animals and want you home. Whatever is coming, whatever danger you think your in, we can keep you safe along with the wolves.”
    “I promise to come Rose. I’ll even drag Nik back. Also we think we know how to keep Demetri away, I’ll explain everything when we get home.” I had to promise I would give her the rundown as soon as I get home, as well as give her a brief explanation of what I meant, before she hung up the phone. Not until I could hear Emmett explaining everything to Jasper one Rose’s phone. I knew that the moment I reached the boarder I would come face to face with my entire vampire family.
    “I swear they are all over protective weirdos.” I sighed, rolling my eyes at the man beside me.
   “Get use to honey because you just gained a whole new pack of over protective weirdos, literally.” Jake laughed, reaching his free arm across so it could drape across my shoulders. I rolled my eyes but let my head fall back against his arm, enjoying the warmth and comfort that came with it.
  “Just my luck.” I sighed, shaking my head at the very idea. “You people do realize that Nik and I are the most powerful beings in the world right? Like combine the speed and strength of the vampire, the shapeshifting and the ability to wield magic there aren’t a whole lot of people that can stand up against me and live.”
    “Yeah not that it matters. We will still protect you regardless. You have that cute, innocent little vibe to you.”
   “Wonderful.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Unsurprisingly Jake and I were the only ones at the beach. Not knowing what else to do, we began to walk along the shore, Jake was eager to show me the little tide pools, which I had to admit were amazing. While I have always been deadly afraid of the ocean, the fact that we have no idea what is down there terrifies me and if it is half as creepy as what's above the water than it can stay there for all I care, but found pleasure in them anyway. When I said so, he beamed proudly at me, clearly thrilled that I was having a good time.
   “So.” I sighed as I sat down on a old tangled tree, turned so I could still face Jake. “What now?”
    “Well, I was thinking we should probably ease that fear you have, you know the one where I misunderstood the imprint.” He said softly, brushing a strand of my hair behind my ear. I grinned up at him and stood up from my spot, moving so that I was standing directly in front of him.
    “I think that would be a good idea.” I hummed, smiling as he pulled me so I was standing between his legs. He moved hand to cup my cheek, the other staying on the small of back. Before he could do anything else, I leaned in and pressed my lips against his. At once everything around us vanished. All that mattered was him. The way he felt pressed against me, his woodsy scent wrapping all around me. The way his hand felt on the small of my back, flat against the exposed skin. As his tongue slipped between my lips, I felt it. The surge of magic that linked us together. I could feel our souls tangling together, fitting together like a puzzle piece.
    “Wow.” I breathed as I pulled away for air, keeping my forehead pressed against his.
   “Did it work?” He muttered, leaning in quickly to press his lips against mine again. When he pulled back I nodded, smiling widely at him. “Your eyes changed colour. I know I should probably be freaked out but honestly I like it. They are a crystal ice blue, which may just have became my new favorite colour.”
   “It worked then. My new colour is the colour our souls make when linked. It’s sign to other witches and supernatural creatures that I have found my soulmate.”
   “Good, though I think we should keep trying, just in case.”
   “I agree, though one thing first. I love you Jacob Black.”
  “Not nearly as much as I love you.” He muttered, grinning widely at me before pulling me in for another searing kiss.
NEW UPLOAD!
SHOW MORE
i. mina’s graduation
many people would say that she would be ending a chapter of her life today. everyone always considered high school to be something so vital to their life. they told her that she would learn how to grow up in that timespan.  she would become more mature and more responsible. by the end of these three years, she would learn something from the experience. she would be able to become someone different by the end of this so-called journey and become an adult.
but as mina stands in line, waiting for her name to be called to finally get her diploma, she doesn’t feel like she’s grown up. here she stands, two months after turning nineteen (eighteen) and she wonders if she ever did change at all in high school. even if she tried to take more responsibility during senior year, it was only temporary until college placement exams were over. sure, she became more social last year in order to get by the year, but she still felt like this chapter of “growing up” was incomplete.
“kang mina.” the voice rings out in the auditorium loudly, applause and a few shouts that make her smile out of embarrassment because she recognized each of the voice all too well. as she is walking to the middle of the stage, shaking the principal’s hand, and walking off to go back to her seat, all she could think was “is this it?” she’s grateful that she has only three years. her western internet friends had to go through four years of high school and the thought of that made her groan in real life, but she was sure even they were able to have a fulfilling senior year. she was practically seen as an outcast when she first came to the school. she managed to join a club and gain some friends from there the year after, but she was lacking in studies. and when she stopped doing extracurriculars in order to focus more on her schoolwork, she spent more time stressing out than she did having fun.
western high school movies are so inaccurate, now that she thinks about it. she wishes she could have fun and good grades. it didn’t help that all her friends weren’t as adventurous as she was. she loved them, of course, but they weren’t her “coming-of-age film” group of friends. the reckless ones who were only carefree to hide a broken secret. people who were complex by nature, and maybe weren’t the best people to hang around with, but at least they knew how to have a good time.
now that she thought about it, she doesn’t think she ever had a moment like those films. she never had her heartbroken from a relationship. the only form of heartbreak she’s had was from convex members who had left the group, but even then it didn’t significantly impact her enough for even her own mother to be concerned about. never did she fuck up in a friendship and learnt that she was in the wrong for it. she’s dealt with some toxic people, but she’s learned well enough from her mom to just cut them out of her life since she couldn’t do that with the woman she lived with. but other than that… she was a teenager who really didn’t live her life to the fullest like she thought she would.
as she sits in her seat, she thinks about the things she wouldn’t miss from this place. she’s glad she doesn’t have to deal with the kids who talked shit about her anymore. the frequent stares that looked away as soon as she looked towards their direction. she’s glad gym class isn’t a concern of hers anymore. she also didn’t have to worry about her counselor who kept on nagging at her to make the right decision, even if she knew the woman meant no harm.
but she was going to miss her friends who were going to make it far in life. of course, some were going to snu with her, but she knew they had their own friend groups at that school already and she didn’t want to cling onto them. there was also the junior girls who already talked about how much they missed seeing her at dance and now they won’t be able to see her in the school building. and she obviously knows she doesn’t have to worry about soobin, but she was going to miss his company. there’s hope that she would be able to see him over the break, but he’s not like most of her friends who she could bother without even thinking about it.
and just like that, the entire ceremony comes to an end. as the students are released outside to meet with their relatives, mina immediately gets pulled into a hug by a person who she couldn’t be more fond of the moment she steps one foot out of the building. as soon as she recognizes who it was, she couldn’t help the big smile on her face as she hugs the other girl back.
they pull away and she’s automatically greeted with chungha’s warm smile. “look at you!” she says excitedly. “you look like a future scholar!”
mina couldn’t help but blush. “please!” she giggles.
“did you hear me?” she asks all of a sudden. “when they called your name, i practically screamed. i think some of the people next to me thought i was crazy or something.”
“oh my god!” she laughs. “nooo! i can’t believe you did that.”
“hey! my baby’s graduating! of course i’m gonna make a big deal out of it.” she then hands mina a bouquet of flowers that mina didn’t even notice was there until now. “this is for you! if you want to later, i can treat you out to dinner as a better congratulation present.”
mina hisses. “maybe another night? my parents are already doing that for me tonight,” she says with a pout. she then looks around the crowd as soon as she’s reminded of them. “have you seen them by any chance?” she asks. “if i don’t find them soon, i think my mom’s gonna-”
“KANG MINA!” a voice calls out, immediately grabbing mina’s attention as she turns around to see her mother, father, and brother in the distance. she gives them a wave and a smile before she turns back to face chungha.
“i’ll talk to you later,” she replies. “but we will meet up soon.”
“we better,” chungha says seriously before smiling at the girl again. “tell your brother i said hi, by the way.”
“i will!” she says, giving the girl one last hug before she ran over to her family.
                                                       ____________________
ii. church
“mina, grandma wants to talk to you.”
it happens once every month and it’s probably the one sunday she looks forward to the most. not only does she not have to deal with her mother’s draining presence, but she also doesn’t have to feel dread for an hour as she hears the priest preach about his, in her personal opinion, flawed words. of course, she never does pay attention in mass. she’s always dozing off the moment mass starts and it returns to her as soon as it’s over. and if she’s not talking to jinsoul who sits next to her, she’s most likely bothering her brother. of course, she always makes time to give a short hello to her grandma and give her a short rundown on how she’s doing.
this time, however, she has to prepare more. even if her grandma’s not pressuring her, it’s basically common knowledge in the family that mina’s no longer in high school anymore. so she’s not surprised when daniel comes up to her as she’s happily talking to jinsoul. woong’s there, too. of course he is.
“congrats,” woong says. “you’re not significantly more stupid than your brother yet.”
though she’s supposed to take that as a compliment, she couldn’t but feel irritated by that comment. however, she stays shut from saying something smart in return. in the end, she’d rather be in a good mood when she’s talking to her grandma. “thank you. you’re very kind,” she says with a forced smile, sarcasm practically drenching her voice. she looks back at jinsoul and the genuine happiness returns. “i gotta go. let’s talk later!”
as she walks away from the group, she approaches her grandma with a smile as the old lady gives her a warm hug. “mina!” she says warmly, later pulling back from her and mina just feels good from seeing her smile. had it not been for her mother, she would’ve probably seen it more often. “i’ve heard you graduated from high school. congratulations!”
“thank you,” mina grins at her. “yeah. last monday. i’m officially an adult now.”
“how do you feel?” her grandma asks all of a sudden and mina hesitates a little for an answer. she doesn’t want to lie to her and tell her that she’s happy, like many other high school graduates would be. but saying she feels dissatisfied would definitely be a mood crusher and mina’s not going to do that to her dad’s mom. maybe if this was someone on her mother’s side, she might. but her grandma is probably kindest person in the kang family and she did not want to make her upset.
“i’m… just glad that it’s over,” she answers with a little laugh, getting her grandma to laugh along with her. it’s an expected reaction from a teenager anyway. to be done with school, even if mina technically had four more years of it.
“so, what’s next?” mina predicted she’d ask that. “you’re going to the same school as daniel, right?” she nods. “what are you going to study?”
“nursing.”
mina also predicts the little head tilt and the slightly surprised expression on her face. “nursing? i didn’t know you took an interest in that.”
“yeah!” she didn’t. she picked that major up so that her mother would stop pestering her about trying to get a good career. plus, it seemed more interesting than law and economics. just the thought of majoring in either of those two made her gag. taking care of people in the hospital was something she could work with in the future. “i kinda want to help people in the future. not to mention, it pays well.”
her grandma’s eyes narrow at the girl and though mina knows she means no harm, she does feel a little scared. it was practically common sense for everyone who knew mina that she wasn’t the best with lying as in contrast to her brother. “well, as long as you’re doing something you like,” she says. “you deserve to be happy with what you’re doing, you know. god would want you to do the same, too.”
she’s good at keeping her expression, but she couldn’t help but internally frown at that. she wonders if it’s obvious that she’s not happy with her life. with all that she’s gone through since she had moved here. the past few years have been unpleasant, she’s dissatisfied with how her life was going so far, and she’s going to a school that she personally didn’t even think about in the first place. to hear people say she deserved to be happy and do what she should do when she’s already had a plan of how her life will become not by her choice? it felt… disheartening.
“i know,” she says with a nod. “i know what i’m doing.” unfortunately, she wants to add in. “thank you.”
“good.” mina feels like she only says that because it was the only thing she could say in this situation. “enough talk about school, though. since you’ve graduated and you’re eighteen, are you excited to learn how to drive?”
the question definitely throws her off guard to the point she lets out a loud “HA!”, immediately getting other people’s attention. when she realizes how loud she was and she looks around to see her brother’s group of friends show an amused reaction from the noise with, she couldn’t help but feel embarrassed and she’s sure daniel was feeling it second-hand. she looks back at her grandma and laughs bashfully, more quietly this time. “ah… i don’t know. i don’t think i’d be a good driver.”
“you won’t know if you don’t try!” the woman grins. “it’d be very convenient for you, too. you can go to places more easily with the car.”
“ah, but we have the subway here, grandma,” she laughs with a small chuckle. “and i can always bike my way to places. it’s just as convenient!”
“ah, you’re right,” she sighs, making mina smile. “well, whatever you do, i know that you won’t hurt people by doing it.”
“as long as i’m not behind the wheel,” she adds, gaining laughter from her grandma.
                                                        ____________________
iii. navillera cover
with not having to worry about any more placement tests, mina had a lot of free time to do whatever she wanted. however, as a teenager, she’s predictable. rather than doing something productive, like uploading videos on her youtube channel, all she did was watch a bunch of movies, read a bunch of fanfiction, and tweet. but after she tweeted on her main account that she was going to post more covers as a response to the sudden increase of attention on her channel, she felt obligated to do it now that she’s on break.
the outfit eclipse for navillera was ... unfortunately, not part of her daily wardrobe. but it’s why being an employee at h&m comes in handy because she could use her employee discount to be able to get a cute enough outfit that kinda matched the aesthetic. she personally doesn’t think she pulls off the tennis skirt look, but it’s good enough. she’d rather look decent-at-best in one of her videos than do the cover dirty by recording it in jeans. she’d rather lose her dignity if it meant doing her girls at least a little justice!
navillera was probably her favorite comeback song since “chase me”. of course, she’d cover that song if given the opportunity, but kang mina did not have a pretty goth outfit. not to mention, her style is too… preppy casual to even try to attempt that look. navillera was their most recent release anyway, so mina wouldn’t have to worry about anything if she had covered a past song.
the choreography takes a lot of energy, but it’s not something she’s not used to. her first cover was from convex who are known for having challenging choreography (see: aju nice). her favorite part of the choreo would most probably be the dance break, though. she’s always been a fan of footwork so seeing the girls “go off” (in he words), it was practically impossible for her to be disappointed. of course, it was the part she’s most likely to mess up out of the whole thing, but when she does her final take, she was 100% satisfied.
with the money she got from family members as a graduation gift, she uses it on a new editor: final cut pro! compared to imovie, it was much better and it was easy for her to understand since it was basically imovie’s big beefy brother. she’s able to add a cute filter over her video to make it look more pretty, as well as do some “fancy-schmancy” adjustments with the lighting. as soon as she finishes editing the video, she plays it over again to make sure everything was perfect before she exports it, titling “if u dont fucking save ill kikiki kick your ass bitch”... then “macbook u r nothing but a stupdi btch”... and finally, with the exhaustion of deleting so many files from her downloads, “kim anna wouldnt do this 2 me”.
after making a good thumbnail with photoshop (no, she won’t reveal how she got it), she uploads the video and quickly makes a title and description with the appropriate tags and checking that the video was not intended for children so that she could get comments on her video. she thinks coppa is stupid, but it’s not like she can complain to them. she’s not as influential as mrbeast yet… but soon…
when the video uploads, she leaves a little comment in the comment section, hoping that her subscribers would see it and interact with it.
“hi everyone! if you know me personally, you would know that i really like girl groups! one of them is eclipse. so when they released this bop, i knew i had to cover it!
i recently graduated high school, so i will have a lot more free time to record covers before i go to college! please anticipate! i can’t wait to show you more content. thank you so much for the support <3”
and she hits “post”.
Werewolf Boyfriend (Kai) - pt 2
Part 1
Part 3
Part 4
word count: 2,128
Come Wednesday morning, you entered the lecture hall your psychology class was in, a good portion of people already seated below concentrated around the front few rows and a smattering in the middle. You immediately noticed a familiar mop of curly hair sitting alone a few rows away from everyone else.
Grinning, you hopped down the steps as you went towards Kai, plopping down in the seat next to him and making him jump.
“Uh, [Y/N], are you okay?” He asked nervously, making you tilt your head in confusion.
“What do you mean?”
“Ah, I mean…” Kai looked somewhat guilty as he stammered trying to come up with an explanation.
“Oh, you mean leaving the bus without saying anything?” You let out with a small gasp of realization, feeling bad that Kai was probably hurt by it, “My roommate was already there to pick me up, and I figured we’d see each other in class.”
“Yeah, you’re right,” Kai let out a relieved laugh, and the two of you talked about what the two of you had been up to since seeing each other last.
The two of you exchanged numbers just as the professor cleared her throat and began the first lecture, making some announcements about the schedule for the rest of the semester and then getting into the material.
Once class was over, you and Kai walked out of the building together, laughing and talking.
“Hey, did you want to go get something to eat?” You asked Kai, “I have a couple hours before my next class and they finally reopened that cafe on the south side of campus.”
“The one on University Avenue?” Kai asked excitedly, practically vibrating with joy, “Oh man, we gotta go! I’ve been craving their bacon bagel for a month!”
This became your and Kai’s routine, hanging out after psychology until you had to go to your next respective classes, soon forgetting about the monster on Monday night altogether as you and Kai became closer.
You even began tagging along whenever your friends went to go watch the school’s baseball games, even though you had no interest in the sport before listening to Kai explain why he loved playing so much. Before now, you thought it was a boring game where you also had to be outside exposed to the elements, but as you learned enough to at least understand what was happening, you started to get into it, which made your roommate smug about your “conversion”.
While he still wasn’t a starter technically, you soon noticed the coach putting Kai in the games more often whenever one of the seniors had to sit out. Kai had mentioned he was a center fielder, though you weren’t entirely sure what exactly that all entailed.
This also became something of a ritual for the two of you. You would text Kai if you were going to one of his baseball games, and he’d always seek you out in the stands, meeting only your eyes and flashing you a wide smile whenever he was playing and caught the ball or made it safely to a base.
One Saturday morning, after studying for an upcoming psychology exam with Mordecai at the library, your roommate texted you, inviting you to hang out at the university food court only a couple minutes away from the library.
You and Kai were done reviewing anyways, and you hadn’t actually introduced him to any of your friends yet, so you invited him to come along. He’d happily accepted your offer, admitting he hadn’t really made many friends outside the baseball team besides you.
So, the two of you put away your things and began walking towards the food court, joking around with each other the whole way.
When you finally found your friends in their usual booth, you were quick to make introductions. Your roommate already knew of Kai, the guy on the baseball team you had become fast friends with on the greyhound, but she had always complained that you never introduced him to her.
Kai hit it off with everyone, even your roommate, though you weren’t surprised considering they both loved baseball. But even as he spoke to everyone else, Kai kept turning back to talk to you , a fact your roommate caught on to and began texting you paragraphs about from across the table.
Just as you were laughing at a dumb joke Kai whispered to you under his breath, you heard one of your friends across the table mention your name.
“To be honest, I haven’t been back to the park since [Y/N] said she saw something there during the lunar eclipse…” you were frozen, and barely registered Kai stiffening next to you as he also listened, “I mean, fuck any other person saying they saw a something in a park at night, but [Y/N] [Y/L/N], the world’s largest skeptic, saying she saw a goddamn monster? I’m staying my ass at home, I don’t give a fuck.”
Fortunately, your roommate also heard, and quickly struck a conversation with you and Kai about teaching you the basics of baseball so you wouldn’t be asking her questions every couple of seconds during the game. You shot her a grateful look and finally relaxed again into the conversation, not noticing Kai shooting nervous glances at you every so often.
Once everyone finished their food, one by one everyone said goodbye and left. Soon, it was just you, Kai, and your roommate, who quickly excused herself to go to a shift at work you knew for a fact she didn’t have.
“I have to go, too,” Kai said apologetically and stood up, “we’re having a meeting for the baseball team.”
“It’s all good, it was just nice being able to study,” you assured him, standing up behind him and getting ready to head out yourself.
“Actually, I was wondering…” Kai stopped short once you turned to look up at him expectantly, “I wasn’t sure if you had any plans this Spring break, but it’s coming up and if you were planning on going back to Newport… we should hang out? I mean, like, I can actually plan something out it doesn’t have to be just hanging out like we always do-”
“I’d love to, Kai,” you mercifully cut off Mordecai’s nervous rambling, beaming up at him, “And you don’t have to feel pressured to do anything special. We can just have fun.”
“Thanks,” Kai let out a sigh of relief, and you could see the tension release from his shoulders, “to be honest, I was worried you’d think the whole thing was weird.”
“Of course not,” you reassured Mordecai, the two of you deciding to continue talking about the specifics of the break after Kai’s meeting later before finally going your separate ways from the entrance of the food court.
Once you made it back to your apartment, your roommate began her interrogation that you had already anticipated. She was something of a romantic, always trying to match you up with someone. The fact that Kai was a baseball player and handsome was probably the deciding factor for her.
While you usually humored her fawning over your love life, Kai was one subject you would not budge on. Not because you weren’t attracted to him — hell, you weren’t blind— but because you were one hundred percent certain he did not think of you in that way.
Not to mention, your roommate wasn’t from Newport, and probably didn’t understand that Kai coming from the east side of town meant his family was loaded, and he definitely knew yours wasn’t since you’d told him you were from the north side the very first time you’d met him. And you knew it was one thing to be friends with someone so radically different from you versus actually dating them — not even in some sort of forbidden romance kind of way, but just in a compatibility way — and no amount of insistence from your roommate that Kai actually “obviously” liked you would change that fact.
You continued to hang out with Kai in between classes, ignoring your roommate always trying to convince you to make the first move. Most of the time, the two of you just wander around campus or even the few blocks of downtown Greenview just talking.
It was on one of these walks that you suddenly found yourself walking with Kai on the very same path as your encounter with the monster what felt like so long ago. You barely heard what Kai was saying about liking to jog in the park in the morning as you felt your heart leap into your throat as the repressed memories flooded back out.
You didn’t even realize you were completely frozen until you felt Kai shaking you and finally realized Kai’s face was only a couple inches from your own, worry etched across his face. As you focused on his freckles scattered across his face, you slowly began to calm down, your hand shakily grabbing Kai’s arm.
You were so out of it, you didn’t even notice Kai’s face reddening as you leaned against him. Kai quickly led you out of the wooded area of the park to the picnic area near the road, the same area where your friends had been to watch the lunar eclipse.
“What’s wrong, [Y/N]?” Kai asked, his hand never leaving your shoulder as he gave you time to calm down.
“I never told you this, but… a couple of days after we met, I was walking alone in the park at night, and I saw something,” you explained, closely examining Kai’s expression in case he started to think you were insane for what you were about to say, “at first I thought it was a dog until it stood up, and…”
You couldn’t finish, and Kai began to fidget next to you, “Well, if it was at night it was probably dark, it could have been your imagination, [Y/N]…”
“I keep telling myself that, but I know what I saw, Kai,” you said, feeling more than a little defensive.
“You’re right, I know you wouldn’t lie about that,” Kai tried to placate you, which only served to make you more upset.
“But you don’t know, Kai!” You snapped at Mordecai, making him flinch at your tone, “We just met. I could be going crazy for all you’d know. I mean, I’d have to be to see something like that!”
Kai looked as though he wanted to say something, you could tell he was thinking about what and how to say to you to calm you down, but something about him trying to smooth the whole situation over without even seeming fazed by it all rubbed you the wrong way, though you weren’t exactly sure why.
“I have to go, Mordecai,” you muttered, standing up and walking away and leaving Kai to scramble after you, saying nothing as he insisted on at least walking with you back to your car parked on campus.
The further you got from the park, the more relaxed you felt, and the worse you felt for yelling at Kai. Once there were a few blocks in between you and the proverbial scene of the crime, you turned to apologize to Kai for spiraling, but something in his expression stopped you.
Mordecai was worrying his bottom lip, a sign of him agonizing over something you first noticed during one of the harder exams for psychology. Once he noticed you looking at him, he shot you a weak smile and looked away.
“Mordecai?” You asked quietly, tugging on the sleeve of Kai’s shirt to get him to look at you, “I’m sorry for getting… crazy back there. It’s just- I don’t even know. But I definitely shouldn’t have snapped at you like that it wasn’t fair and you were just trying to help.”
“No, I get it, you were just scared,” Kai assured you, though something in the half-hearted smile he gave you seemed sad, and you weren’t sure if he was still upset or if there was something else going on.
Your goodbye was the most awkward the two of you had ever exchanged, and when you saw Kai standing in the corner of your mirror as you backed out of your parking space, you were struck once again by how miserable he looked and you had no idea why.
Pushing Kai from your mind, you instead decided to focus on driving back to your apartment, maybe even studying for some of your other classes’ quizzes before Spring break. But the issue still nagged at you from the back of your mind, which you quieted as you turned up the volume of your car radio.
Hello, how are you? I think your blog is amazing and the dedication you put in each ask is lovely. Could I ask baka trio headcanons when their crush flirt with them in joke? I hope you've a nice day!
Oh wow thank you!! I’m great, how are you anon? This prompt is so adorable omg 😭 I’m getting back into writing fics after a long hiatus and honestly having requests to answer is very helpful because I need a lot of practice writing the Hakuouki crew. So thank you for sending this!
With these I’m assuming it’s a reciprocated crush, or that there’s at least some level of interest on both sides. (These also turned into another set of f/m headcanons–I’ll try to keep things more inclusive in the future!) Get ready for a text wall let’s gooooo
Shinpachi
You would totally knock him off his game!
Shin is definitely no stranger to women thanks to the red-light district. In front of you he always insists that he just goes to have a few drinks and let off some steam after a long day, but he’s also spent a good amount of time flirting with and being flirted at by geisha and oiran. It’s the sort of female attention he’s comfortable with, because there’s this mutual understanding on both sides that it’s all a pleasant business interaction.
But you’re a different story. Flirting coming from you just feels…weird. You’re his friend.
Well…
If he’s honest with himself, he’s started having some feelings for you that go deeper than friendship. But that’s not a reality he’s not remotely ready to confront, because he’s not sure you feel the same way about him.
Because shit, what if you’re not even trying to flirt with him at all? As far as he knows you haven’t had a really serious relationship before. Maybe you don’t realize what you’re doing. Maybe you don’t know how a guy takes it when a girl teases him for showing off his (albeit very nice) muscles, or accidentally brushes arms with him too often, or laughs at even his dumbest jokes. Maybe it’s all just your way of kidding around with a guy you only see as a friend. It sends his mind traveling around in circles. Shin has trouble thinking straight with you.
In the beginning it all started as good fun between two friends. From day one Shinpachi was someone you just felt comfortable around. He was honest, he spoke his mind, and he didn’t really have a filter with you. It was refreshing; the other men seemed to watch what they said around you a bit because you were a girl. Not Shin.
This did cause some awkward moments at first. You’d notice him double-taking at a pretty face walking past, then he’d realize you caught him and feel compelled to apologize to you for some reason, and you couldn’t help laughing at the sheepish way he scrubbed at his hair when he got embarrassed.
After a couple repetitions of this he finally started loosening up–it even became a type of I-Spy game you’d play together during walks through the city.
‘Ooh…cute maiko coming up on the right…’ You tip him off. Watching the sly way he glanced the girl over was like witnessing a master practice his finest craft. He shrugged a shoulder. ‘Eh, bit thin.’
The first time you responded in kind about a handsome young samurai, you’d think you shattered his entire world to pieces. ‘What? What’s with the face? Girls notice too, you know.’
He’s still staring at the man warily, as if he was a sudden threat. ‘I guess.’
‘Though he is a bit thin…’ You repeat his words without thinking. For a second you both catch each other’s eye, then break away in awkward laughter, the mood between you suddenly shy.
Day by day something shifts in the way he acts around you. Where at first he had no qualms giving back a brash retort when you teased him about his taste in women, now he seems especially chagrined by it. There’s something so gratifying about seeing him ruffle at your playful prodding, this big lug of a guy who used to share all kinds of details about his preferences for everything from women’s hair color to their shoe size.
It’s a little bit…no, it’s very adorable. You find yourself drawn to him more and more because of those moments, and for some unknown reason it makes you want to find small excuses to touch him. You prod him with an elbow, or give him little knocks with your shoulder, trying to let him know that it’s all in good fun.
Eventually Shinpachi will reach a breaking point with you. He’ll realize his fear of misunderstanding your relationship has been eclipsed by the need to know just what the hell is going on between you two, and why you keep picking on him in a way he doesn’t feel equipped to deal with anymore.
‘Come on, Shin…you can tell me! Who’s your type, anyway? I know you how much you love Kyoto women, but there’s so many kinds to choose from. Is it short girls? Tall girls? Blonde girls? What type do you really–’
He wheels around on you. ‘You, okay?!’
You blink up at him, suddenly feeling very small faced with his broad frame. ‘…Me what?’
‘My type is someone like you, all right? It’s you. You’re my type.’
There’s a tinge of pink across his cheeks, but he’s looking down at you with a pure and serious determination that makes your insides feel very warm.
‘Oh…’
Sanosuke:
To be honest Sano never thought he could have a thing for such a spirited woman. He tends to go for the sweet type, so realizing he has feelings for a woman who acts so playful around him would be kind of a new experience.
The truth is he’s very direct and open about his emotions. If he’s crushing on you, you’re going to know, and he’s not going to feel an ounce of embarrassment about something so natural as caring for someone. The fact that you’re actually flirting back without hesitation will be unexpected, even if for you it’s a bit of a smokescreen. It flips the script on him.
Inside? He makes you very nervous. Maybe even terrified. He’s just so full of confidence all the time, about everything. He says and does things that knock the wind straight out of you–like telling you that you look pretty when you laugh, or reaching over to calmly brush a stray leaf out of your hair with that warm smile. You realize you can either melt into an incoherent puddle every time he’s around, or you can find a defense mechanism, fast.
So you start evading the intensity of his attention with humor. It’s supposed to lighten things up between you, maybe keep him at a bit of a distance, but it soon becomes clear your plan is rapidly backfiring on both of you.
When you deflect his serious attempts to get to know you better with a coy joke, instead of putting distance between you, it only seems to draw him closer. His tawny eyes linger on your face, seeking to read your true feelings there.
‘You sure you’re okay?’ He’s looking down at you with that expression of kind concern, you can hear it in his voice, but you know better than to meet his eye.
‘Oh of course, Captain Harada! You know me–’ You make a big production of shifting the stacks of papers in your arms, trying to distract from the loud thump of your heartbeat. What if he’s close enough to hear it too… ‘The chief’s busy applying for new headquarters, and I’m his right-hand girl, so I can’t take it easy can I? But how sweet of you to worry.’ You cast him your brightest, most impish smile, still not quite looking him in the eye.
‘Hmm.’ His response is thoroughly unconvinced. ‘I do worry. You can’t keep working so hard all the time, you know? You’re going to get sick if you overwork yourself.’ And before you can do anything to stop it, he’s placed his cool palm against the skin of your forehead.
‘Ah, thought so. You’re warm. Probably got a fever…your face is all pink.’
‘N-no!’ It comes out more of a yelp than you intended. ‘No, I’m sure it’s just the weather–Kyoto summers are much hotter than I’m used to–’ You manage to twist away from his contact. ‘Besides, you shouldn’t go around putting your hands all over a girl’s face. You’ll give her the wrong idea.’
He’s thoroughly amused by you. ‘Oh? Like what?’
‘Come on, you know what I mean…’ Somehow you manage a breezy laugh. And then you high-tail it away from him with a string of excuses about your work, feeling his gaze on your back all the way, clinging to your crumbling facade until you’re at least out of his sight.
His persistence only makes it harder to keep putting him off. You can’t help being attracted by everything you learn about him; from his kindness toward women and children, to his bravery as a captain, to the look on his face when he’s listening to you talk about your day. It makes a sharp ache rise in your chest. You’re starting to panic.
Because you’re not supposed to fall for this guy–he’s a soldier, a man who stakes his life every day on his honor and his duty to his chief and the shogunate. Falling for someone like him could be disastrous. You have to stay aloof. And whatever you do, he cannot know that you’re starting to fall for him in spite of yourself.
But Sano is Sano, and he’s rapidly figuring out what’s going on here. It’s a strange kind of summer weather indeed that only seems to affect your face when you’re near him…
Very gently at first, he starts to test the waters. In a way he can’t help being impressed with your dedication. Even in moments when he turns up the charm in an attempt to catch you off-guard, to levels that have won over many women in his past, you somehow manage to respond with your own slew of defenses. It becomes a kind of sparring match between you two; each one equally determined to emerge from the fray on top. He’s only more attracted to you because of it.
And you–you start to realize that you never stood a chance against him in the first place, not under the full weight of the Harada charisma. He’s rapidly disarming you.
‘Hey, did you hear what I said?’ His voice calls you out of your daze. With a jolt, you realize you’d been staring at his mouth as his words went in one ear and out the other.
‘Oh! I’m sorry, Harada. I think I must be…tired or something.’ Had he been standing this close to you the whole time? He’s so tall that you have to angle your head back to meet his eyes. Something in his face is very serious tonight; it makes you feel like you’re rooted to the floor in front of him.
He feels it, too. His body bends slightly in your direction. ‘Listen. There’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while…but I’d like to know it’s something you want, too.’
Oh? Oh. Oh no. A string of disconnected retorts pass through your brain, none of them gaining traction. You can feel the warmth from his body as he leans dangerously closer.
There’s a pause, like a question hanging between you both. His eyes are soft as they read your expression. Unbidden, you feel your chin tip upward toward him. He meets you in the middle…and then his lips are on yours and his arms draw you in to press against his chest and you find your hands seeking his shoulders.
It all only lasts for a moment. He’s first to break away, and you could swear now that his eyes are laughing at you. ‘No comeback?’
‘Give me a minute.’ You’re already rising on tip-toe, ready to wipe away that smile. ‘I’ll think of something…’
Heisuke:
You are laughing at him and honestly he is offended!
Not really, truly offended. You two have been friends since day one, because after all, this is Heisuke we’re talking about. The guy could make friends with a houseplant.
He’s offended in the way he gets pissed at Nagakura and Harada for their good-natured teasing–lots of ‘hey, quit!’s and rambunctious play-fighting–only now it’s with you, this young woman his age who still teases and openly pokes fun at him. He’s never met a girl like you before. He doesn’t know how he’s allowed to respond. It’s alarming, quite frankly.
For a long time he’s torn back and forth between annoyance and attraction toward you. You do little things that get under his skin, especially ragging on him about his size. Heisuke’s taller than you, but not by much; a fact that you’ve innocently brought to his attention more than once. He reminds you at one point that he could still beat you up with both hands behind his back, a remark that’s unfortunately overheard by Nagakura and earns him a slap to the back of the head for being such a ‘fucking idiot talking that way to a lady.’ You only laugh a little bit.
But it’s not always a catfight between you two. He almost wishes it was; that would make this all much easier to figure out. It only makes him more confused when your mood suddenly turns softer or sweeter toward him. There are moments when he catches you watching him at dinner, though you quickly look down when he catches your eye, your expression almost shy. You can be surprisingly easy to talk to, on the nights when it’s just the two of you sitting out on the porch in the breeze.
Heisuke finds himself looking forward to those moments with you, particularly after the memorable night when you dozed off against his shoulder. You’d grown very quiet beside him, when out of nowhere he felt a light pressure and looked down to find your head pressed on his arm, your lashes two dark crescents across your cheeks, breathing through slightly parted lips. He sat frozen still until long after the feeling left his legs.
Pretty soon Heisuke’s frustration about it all will boil over and he’ll need to pay a visit to Harada-Sensei for lady advice. Harada will listen in bemused silence as Heisuke rambles out his thoughts, pacing circles around the floor.
‘…and sometimes she’s just…she’s so cute, it’s stupid! How do I tell her that when she treats me like her brother? Maybe I should just give up, I don’t think she even sees me as a man sometimes. And she always knows just what to say to make me embarrassed! Damn it–’
‘Sit down,’ Harada will sigh, ‘You’ve got this all wrong…’
Dejected, Heisuke will slump down in a sad pile of boy and wait for Harada’s words of wisdom.
‘Didn’t you ever throw rocks at a girl when you were little, because you thought she was pretty and you didn’t know how to tell her? She’s doing the same thing to you, kid.’
‘What are you saying? You mean she…likes me? But you guys see how she always makes fun of me–plus she calls me short all the time and you said–!”
‘So what? She’s short too, dummy! How about that! Why don’t you stop whining and grow a pair and go get her if you like her so much?’
Heisuke will leave thoroughly chastised, but full of new energy at this startling idea that maybe…maybe he’s been a gigantic blind idiot this whole time…maybe all those moments he thought you were making fun of him, you were just as stiff and clueless as he felt inside. He finds you out in the courtyard, thankfully alone. Best if no one else is here to see this.
His expression catches you by surprise. ‘Heisuke, what’s wro–’ Two hands come down on both your shoulders, gripping you firmly in place. He’s stronger than he looks!
‘Look.’ His eyes are clear and determined. ‘I like you, okay? And I think you like me too, because you keep throwing rocks at me and stuff–’
‘Rocks? What are you–’ So much is happening at once; your chest is pounding.
‘Forget it, doesn’t matter now, just listen. I think I figured out why you give me so much crap and tease me all the time. You don’t have to say it out loud if you’re not ready, but I still want to tell you all the same. You’re the prettiest girl I’ve ever met, and I think you’re cute even when you’re being annoying and trying to pick fights with me, and I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time actually. Oh!’ he remembers something. ‘And you’re really short.’
‘You–!’ Your protest is cut short by his lips on yours, an awkward and sudden kiss that somehow leaves you short of breath all the same. When he pulls away, he’s glowing with a pure happiness that you just don’t have the heart to resist. You melt closer into him. ‘I think…I think you’re cute too, Heisuke.’
His beaming face falls a bit. ‘You shouldn’t really call a guy cu–’
‘Oh shut up, I like you back, just kiss me again–’
An Introduction
When I was in High School, a friend forced me to read Twilight. I’d seen the books before, even had another friend who had been a fan since the first book had been released, but something about it never appealed to me. I was the girl who owned all the Buffy and Angel seasons, my Mother loved Interview with the Vampire, and I picked up almost every book with a supernatural love interest I could find.  In theory, these books were made for me but the descriptions had felt somewhat...lacking. Normal girl falls for broody vampire, I’d seen it all before, it was the the plot of The Silver Kiss, and Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Darkside, and every other book in the teen fantasy category. I wasn’t into it. But, it was fall break and I had nothing to do, and a friend had swore to me i would love the book, so it wasn’t as if i had anything to lose, so i took the leap. And I LOVED it. The main character was a brunette(like me) and clumsy (also like me) she even liked to read (again, like your’s truly) and here was this sexy vampire who was incredibly into her, and he was rich and had superpowers. Plus, his family was amazing. What wasn’t there to love? New Moon was already out at this point and I devoured it as well, being angry at Edward for leaving, and exasperated at Bella for letting his stupidity bring her down. I devoured the lore of the werewolves, and moaned when it seemed Bella was falling for Jacob. And, of course, I cheered when Bella and Edward were reunited.Of course I rolled my eyes at the thought of a love triangle, since we all KNEW she couldn’t be with anyone but Edward. It wasn’t long after that that Eclipse came out, and it was at that Point that Twilight mania seemed to take over my school. I admit, it wasn’t my favorite of the books for a variety of reasons, and it was around this point I started to see more of the appeal of Jacob. Edward struck me as a bit too controlling and annoying. I jumped ship, even though I knew it was fruitless, but still, nothing detoured me from my love of the series. When Breaking Dawn came out, I remember giving my mother the money I had gotten in tips from my waitressing job and having her pick up a copy as she got off work that morning. (she worked nights, my job was evenings on the weekends)I devoured half of the book before work that night and the rest when i got home. And, unpopular opinion, I LOVED it. It was unexpected, it was strange, some of it was downright weird. and it was my favorite book of the series, problematic and all. The movie came out my final year of high school, inspiring seventeen year old me to get the “Alice” haircut (it was not my best look, I assure you, but it taught me to NEVER go that short again)and the movies, oh lord, the movies got my mom into the series. Does she still regularly rewatch them? Yes, yes she does. Of course, when the movies made things more mainstream, it meant the detractors came out of the woodwork. “This is anti-feminist” “problematic” “abusive” “Pro-life propaganda” “Subtle Mormon indoctrination” and so forth. And, yea, there were some things i could see their points on but it was still my series...until suddenly, it wasn’t. The more I read the more I was concerned that some of the messages I had shrugged off as being simply a product of this one fictional relationship might actually influence people to accept this behavior in real life. Yes, most readers would understand that interactions that were seen as loving and protective by a centuries old vampire or a werewolf weren’t the norm but “THINK OF THE CHILDREN” (ignoring the fact that i had also been a child when reading, of course) So I became and Anti, I trash talked the writing style, read sporkings, even wrote an essay for a a literature class on women lacking agency in popular literature using Twilight as one of my two main examples. I rolled my eyes at my aunt naming her dog Bella and made fun of my mother trying to rename my dog “Jacob”  I was full on the hate train and there was no backing down. So what changed? Well, for one “Life and Death” came out and I was...curious. of course I didn’t buy it right away, but a bit later I found it on sell during Black Friday and I snatched it up. I thought it would be ridiculous and something I could make fun of, but instead, I genuinely enjoyed it. Several of my friends had the same reaction.But maybe, maybe her writing style had just improved, or maybe it had major changes, but ...no. it was 90% the same story, but I loved it it a way i hadn’t anything that that verse in years. Then, I watched the movies with a friend. Of course there were corny moments and things that made me roll my eyes (but these days, most shows with teenagers cause the same reaction in me) But on the whole, the movies were fun. Not masterpieces of cinema, but fun. And i wondered....was I a bit too harsh before? I wasn’t the only one. Tumblr began its “Twilight Renaissance.” Lindsay Ellis- once such a critic of Stephanie that she helped write a book parodying her- did a video apologizing to Stephanie Meyer and commenting on how it is often books and other media enjoyed by teenage girls that is subject to the harshest criticism, even by other woman. Buzzfeed was having articles and quizzes and memes about it. Twilight was back in my face again, just it was ten years ago. So, here I am, taking another look. Admitting that time changes viewpoints and that maybe i was too harsh, that an opinion  doesn’t have to be all or nothing. that I can say “Hey, there are some choices I don’t like and things I have issues with”  and yet admit “it’s enjoyable, it’s fun”,And -while it might not be “serious literature” it got  a lot of people reading and influenced an entire  generation. So I’m going back, I’m reading the main books first and, if I have time, taking in other things (the illustrated guide, Bree Tanner, Midnight Sun) that i skipped over before. I want to see where I come in at the end of things. Will I like the same characters? Will my favorite book and movies still be the same? Can this girl finally make up her mind if she’s Team Jacob or Team Edward? I hope to find out. And I hope to have some fun along the way. I’m going to have my ask box  and submissions open,because I really hope to engage with people while doing this, both to keep me motivated and to see where my thoughts and opinions go with this. i haven’t exactly worked out a reading schedule yet, and i will warn that updates may occasionally get sporadic as my personal life can be...a challenge. But,I  really hope this doesn’t turn anyone off of things as this si something I’m super excited about. Till then, Be Safe AJ
send me a ship // @motherfucking-username (I’m doing both but I’m gonna do ‘em in separate posts)
Tumblr media
1- Who is the most affectionate?
Connor.
2- Big spoon/Little spoon?
Kisama prefers being the big spoon, but I know Connor likes being able to look at/hold Kisama. Honestly I’m not sure they’re big on spooning when they could just hold each other face-to-face instead. When they do though, they probably trade off.
3- Most common argument?
Probably something about Kisama working too much or not telling Connor things. Kisama keeps a lot of secrets and that’s a main source of friction between them. They don’t ‘argue’ about that much exactly but it does come up a lot.
4- Favorite non-sexual activity?
Cuddling. Although Kisama loves taking Connor just about anywhere outside of work, showing him anything is super cute.
5- Who is most likely to carry the other?
Hmmmm... It’s close, but I think I’m gonna say Kisama. Which is funny because Kisama tries not to-- Connor weighs over 300 lbs and casually picking him up requires his super-strength. At the same time though, I can totally imagine Kisama carrying Connor to bed bridal-style, or lifting him up and spinning him around when they get home from work. (These two are disgusting ifya haven’t noticed.)
6- What is their favorite feature of their partner’s?
Kisama’s favorite is either his eyes or his hair. He really loves that tuft Connor has that never stays up.
7- What’s the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for the other?
... Everything? They realize it when Kisama is still in Detroit, and has to reconcile that they have about 2 weeks before Kisama heads back to Naobi, basically for good. I’m sure their entire work dynamic changes for a start, though. A lot of looks and pining, Kisama wishing he could just stop working and make every second count before time runs out.
8- Nicknames? & if so, how did they originate?
'Darling’ would be Kisama’s favorite for Connor, which is something he heard his parents (his dad, specifically) call each other a lot. But Kisama’s fond of other pet names too, like ‘sweetie’ or ‘honey.’ He’ll also call Connor ‘Officer’ at work, and jokingly outside of it.
9- Who worries the most?
God, that’s a tough one. They both worry way too much, can I just say both? Maybe Kisama just barely edges it out because he’s always worrying about Connor leaving if he finds out his secrets, or if he’s protecting Connor too much/not enough at work. Wouldn’t be surprised to see @motherfucking-username disagree though.
10- Who remembers what the other one always orders at a restaurant?
Connor. Seems like the sort of thing he’d memorize.
11- Who tops?
Kisama because that’s what he prefers, but if Connor wanted to give it a go, Kisama would (eventually) try to bottom instead.
12- Who initiates kisses?
They both do, although I think Connor does a bit more often once he gets more comfortable with it.
13- Who reaches for the other’s hand first?
Connor.
14- Who kisses the hardest?
Connor, probably? I think they both get pretty into it though.
15- Who wakes up first?
Connor, because he doesn’t sleep--
16- Who wants to stay in bed just a little longer?
Funnily enough, I think Connor again. Kisama is used to getting up early and going straight to work, and I could see Connor saying they have a few minutes to spare to cuddle before getting dressed. (And like backing it up with an exact time of how long it takes for them to get ready, just to sound super convincing.)
17- Who says I love you first?
I think Connor did, in a roundabout way. He admitted feelings first, at least. Kisama might’ve been the one to actually say ‘I love you’, although now I’m not sure.
18- Who leaves little notes in the other’s one lunch? (Bonus: what does it usually say?)
God, Connor would pack lunches for Kisama, wouldn’t he? Maybe gross, sappy, cute things (hearts, short quotes/poems about love, random things about Kisama that he likes, etc.) because these two are disgusting trash--
19- Who tells their family/friends about their relationship first?
Connor tells Hank everything-- Hank actually knew about Connor’s feelings before Kisama did. Kisama tells no one anything ever, although his bodyguards/Axa inevitably find out.
20- What do their family/friends think of their relationship?
Kisama’s bodyguards (Andrew and Yuuto) are initially in disbelief, and Yuuto is pretty disgusted with it, but they ultimately come to support Kisama because of how happy Connor makes him. (Having spent so much time with Kisama, and seen a few of his bad moments, they know he really needs more people in his life to support him.) Axa Pfertun, Kisama’s secretary/second-in-command, also starts out as extremely against the relationship, and believes Kisama can’t afford to be anything less than 100% professional at all times, or it will be used against him. She also comes around at some point during the time Kisama and Connor are separated.
21- Who is more likely to start dancing with the other?
Connor.
22- Who cooks more/who is better at cooking?
Connor on both counts, although I could see cooking together becoming something they do for fun at home.
23- Who comes up with cheesy pick up lines?
Both of them. They’re losers.
24- Who whispers inappropriate things in the other’s ear during inappropriate times?
Kisama likes to compartmentalize his life as a way to cope with stress, so he has a ‘work life’ and a ‘home life.’ Things at work stay at work, and only work things are allowed at work. So I could see Connor whispering things to him at work to try and get him riled up, since he wants to bone in Kisama’s office so bad--
Real answer: They both do, Kisama’s not innocent of this either.
25- Who needs more assurance?
God, both of them again, they suck. Maybe Connor?
26- What would be their theme song?
My ship tag for them is Style by Taylor Swift, although I don’t think that’s a great one aside from a couple lines. First ones that come to mind that I like (as in, first ones I saw after looking through my Youtube likes) are This Feeling by The Chainsmokers, and Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler.
27- Who would sing to their child back to sleep?
Kisama. Unless Connor wants to sing Tequila. Or just like open his mouth and make Baby Shark play, like a speaker.
28- What do they do when they’re away from each other?
Work, mostly. That’s the main thing that keeps them apart, and these two both love diving headfirst into work to try and distract from The Gay Thoughts.
29- one headcanon about this OTP that breaks your heart.
The fact that Connor will outlive Kisama even in the best case scenario is pretty heartbreaking, along with the fact that Kisama doesn’t think he’s going to make it there. He’ll probably die young, just because of who he is and what his job is. It’s also heartbreaking that Kisama knows there is, technically, a way to bring him back indefinitely via Devil Contracts, and Loqero would be 100% down to help Connor with it. He just doesn’t want this to happen because it basically requires killing someone each time, and Kisama hates the idea that Connor would consider sacrificing innocent people if it meant bringing his boyfriend back. It’s something he never wants to confront, and will probably never bring up as a result.
30- one headcanon about this OTP that mends it.
Kisama having to take a meeting over the phone while they’re home and it’s running long and Kisama’s pissed about it. Connor walking over and touching his phone to make it shut off, then taking Kisama’s hand and going “Oh no your battery died :) What a shame :)” And then they smooch bc screw running a country when you can be gay instead
Also Kisama at work with Connor sitting in his lap, “””making sure Kisama gets work done””” when they’re actually just snuggling.
Player Profile: Hang
Tumblr media
avid modder, occasional TO and montage video producer from Germany top 12 in the Jawbreakers Stunfest Qualifier (artwork of Drop by Kagu)
What names do you go by?
I used to go by Troke for the entirety of April. Which was based on a dumb coincidence where I talked to Neer and had one of my usual mobile spelling errors and I wrote "I'm having ha troke" instead of "having a stroke".
I wanted to go away from "Hang Boy" since quite some time as I specifically wanted to get rid of the "Boy" and just "Hang" felt wrong and was still associated to Hang Boy anyway. But I guess I'm back to that now.
Reason to why I wanted to rid myself of "Boy" was as simple as me linking my online persona to my OC (By choosing her for profile pictures on basically any platform) which then of course lead people to believe she is a male based on the thought "Hey this is Hang Boy. So the profile picture must also be Hang Boy".
The name Hang Boy btw occurred just as I started my first step into the internet, when I was a big fan of the Binding of Isaac. So i needed an online name and I ventured through Isaac related things. Which was when I came across the Tarot card "Hanged Man". So I just took that and adjusted a bit.
How do you feel about your performance in this tournament?
Was pretty okay. I didn't expect to get far into it. Although I'm a bit sad I didn't make the Top 8 picture. Only needed one win more as well.
However I would have been disappointed in everyone else, if they allowed for me to reach Top 3. So good that didn't happen.
What was your strategy preparing for and competing in the tournament?
I haven't played Blaze in weeks. The only times I played recently was to get some recordings for a Toxic montage. Right before the tournament I was more worried to finish my Isaac run. Which I did win!
And during the tournament was pretty much just "Turn some nice music on, jam to it, play some Nitro, do some silly cuff shenanigans, do dumb parry grab down throws so the viewers can laugh over something".
I did "fly" with Nitro in one match but sadly it wasn't streamed so only Hellraiser was able to see the glory of Flying Cuff™.
youtube
Which was your hardest match of the tournament?
Hellraiser I suppose. He did kick me out of it. I never really played him or saw him play and he didn't fall for my aggressive playstyle, so it was a tough time.
What surprised you most about the tournament?
Cherry's second place finish. I know he's good, I think he's underrated even.
But second place is a really good finish. Even more so beating JawDrop since, in my opinion, he has some of the craziest tech and can be really really confusing to play against.
(Yea he also has weird lag even tho he lives in France but whatever :p)
Is there anyone you didn’t face that you wish you did?
I would have wanted to play Defur if possible. To some degree I see his entrance as a sort of meme entry. But jokes aside and game aside, I can only take my hat off to this man and his effort for the tournament scene.
Sadly didn't get to play Daio. It feels like a tradition to face off against him in FellowsTV hosted tournaments. Which always goes the same way tbf. He counters my playstyle hard, I'm annoyed to play against him, don't bother changing my playstyle in order to win, get demolished. But the tradition counts!
I'd put Neer in the same boat. Hate playing against him but it just kinda has to be.
How did you get into Lethal League?
A friend bought it for me. We played a couple of games, he had to leave. I went into QM, found Garu, got absolutely demolished, he friended me and pulled me into it.
I specifically remember seeing his Latch corpse juggles and thinking "Man this is so cool, I want to be able to do this too". So right of the bat I started to play for the style, which is what I still go by.
Style > Efficiency
It feels bad not having paid for LL nor Blaze but I bought LL for a bunch of friends so guess that checks out.
What's your current Lethal League experience?
450+ hours in LL 340 hours in Blaze (As of now. 26.4.2019) And a giant bunch of hours of community interaction and modding.
I was very excited when asked to be beta testing and it fulfilled a childhood dream of being in video game credits.
Despite only getting into Beta a month before release, I stacked up 90 hours before the game came out. Lots of 9 hour playtime days. It was massive fun.
I bought almost all of the merch...got most signed by Tim & Dion too. I went to the Netherlands twice to meet TR. It was fun, they are cool people. Watching Dion doing a live dance off was pretty rad ngl.
I brought self made cheesecake the second time, but Tim had to get it into the building since they check your bags for normal visitors and it wasn't allowed to bring food.
I'll never forget the sight of Tim with his big bag looking like he's smuggling a bomb into a convention.
Who are your main/side/counter character picks?
Everything. So yes random, it's random.
However I most enjoy playing Nitro because of all the dumb things he can do. Especially flying, cuff storage (specifically for down angle on the ground, to just pull a little bit forward) and half pull.
Doombox is also very fun. Special>bunt>smash>parry>special>repeat can chain pretty often on some opponents and is hilarious.
The only characters I "despise" playing are Toxic and Sonata. But only because I'm really bad with them.
What are your favourite character outfits?
Dust and Ashes. Just their whole design.
For real tho. There's not really skins that stick out to me since I use my own modded ones.
Can you share your favourite/most used custom outfit?
Hm I missed that that's not "outfits"...well take a load of skins! In order
Mothyman Jeviman Spacetor Golden Switch Drop Palette Sonata Supercharged Latch PaDice-a the Rapper Skull Grunt Supercharged Grid Supercharged Doombox Dropbox FYouBox Nitro with a blue, white and mint color scheme I made for every character and lastly my Toxic skin with that same color scheme
Tumblr media
What are your stage preferences?
Idc. I play random so who really cares. I guess insert the usual "Paradise field eclipse succs!!!"
What input method do you use?
PS4 Controller Dpad for movement L1 Bunt R1 Swing R2 Grab
I used to play LL on a cheap SNES controller using only face buttons. When I was over at Dutch Comic Con with Serchiot I played a couple games of Blaze with his PS4 controller and really liked his layout and the feel of the controller. So I just sneakily stole his layout and got myself a PS4 controller.
Coming from all face buttons, I needed some time to get used to it. But in my opinion it's just superior this way.
How do you make your character montage videos?
I have two ways of recording clips. Just consciously recording with OBS or putting Shadowplay on and saving every time something cool happens. I usually just boot up Blaze and jump into ranked to get some games in. With the Toxic montage it was a bit different since I now have a 4K monitor but 4K can hardly be recorded at 60fps and setting the output resolution in OBS to 1080p got me weird screen effects. So every time I went to record, I put the resolution of my monitor to 1080p in order to at least get that in good quality. Then I just cut all the good clips out of the recordings and mix ‘n’ match ‘em. What's usually the hardest decision is what music to use. There's been a couple of songs that I'd like to use, but they either don't fit over Blaze gameplay, don't fit my playstyle or were just the wrong length.
My two favourite Montages are definitely for Candyman and Nitro. Candyman took a long way to develop, because I just wanted to show off so much. It's one of the few montages where I actually asked higher skill players for games instead of jumping into ranked. Picking the song was really hard, I was only sure I wanted a Klaus Veen track, but OD V2 was too mainstream and most others were too short. So in the end I opted for two songs with a break in between the montage. Splitting the clips into two sets, each song one. With the second part containing what I considered the more hype bursts.
And for Nitro I actually had the montage pretty much done, but I wasn't too happy with it. Still planned to just upload it like that tho. However when I saw the Nitro voice actor interact with a community member in a way that could only be described as "incredibly wholesome", I was inspired to redo most, if not all, of the clips and do the best I could. For the first time actually going into training mode to lab some combos (mostly corpse juggles tbf) and eventually learning Flying Cuff™ too. Watching JawDrops Blazin' Combo video and taking a slice off the Nitro plays there. Which resulted in a montage I am very happy with.
youtube
What other games do you play?
It differs from time to time.
The only games I always come back to are retro games like SMW, CTR or something like Mario Kart 8D. Which I always enjoy playing at local tournaments and pretty successfully so even. People just can't handle it when someone plays with one hand.
Atm I also like playing TBoI Rebirth.
Will you come to Stunfest?
Probably not. Driving/Flying over to France is just very expensive. I would love to meet all my Baguettes (Lusked, Jawdrop, Aru and Lalou, who stated he can't make it due to exams, yes I know). But exams and the neer-ing end of my apprenticeship is leaving a lot of work to be done.
So it probably won't fit into my schedule. However never say no! Trips to Blaze events aren't uncommon for me.
Is there anything else you’d like to say to the community?
Play the game for fun, not for glory.
Stop rubbing yourself for an imaginary title that doesn't mean anything as there's not even any competition for it.
I can't stress enough how great Soda City Funk by Tim Legend is. Go listen to it right now.
And for my last words. Be more like Kota. And remember, We love Ramkat <3
Aftermath - A Sonic Forces AU Fanfiction: Chapter 4, Part 2
If you are seeing this first, I strongly advise you read from the beginning to make sure you’re not confused on the main plot.
Reposting this because Tumblr’s being a little bitch again.
Fast forwarding seven hours later, the quintet was awake and as rested as they possibly could have been. While Amy, Knuckles, Gadget, and Silver drowsily congregated on the couches surrounding the coffee table, Sonic was perched on a stool in the kitchen, taking a sip of his coffee. Last night’s dream left the blue racer in an almost vegetative state; he was still aware of what was going on, but his body gave off a completely different impression; his ultramarine quills dulled to a lackluster blue-gray, his emerald green irides had jaundiced considerably, his peach skin became anemic, and his expression mimicked that of a thousand-yard stare.
As Gadget stood up to refill his own cup, he noticed the dejected warrior with his head down as his eyes anxiously scanned the hardwood floor beneath him.
“Sonic…?” the canine asked. “Are you okay?”
Gadget received an incoherent grunt in response.
“...Would you mind telling us about what freaked you out during the night?” he queried.
Sonic looked at him, slowly set down his cup on the counter nearby, and turned his back clearly agitated.
“Sonic?” Gadget began walking towards the hedgehog.
“Hold on,” Sonic grumbled.
After a couple moments, Sonic asked if he could talk about it with Gadget in private. He agreed, and the two headed upstairs to the wolf’s bedroom. Gadget locked the door behind them and Sonic sat down on a chair while Gadget sat on the bed.
Sonic then proceeded to tell Gadget every detail about the dream he could remember. He recalled seeing his friends in the same dire predicament; he recalled the pain of the branding iron pressed against his exposed flesh; he claimed he could still hear the screaming as they were all tortured in different ways.
“I also wanted to thank you,” Sonic admitted.
The auburn-furred wolf was baffled. “Thank me? For what?”
“For giving me a what-for a few minutes ago,” he answered. “To tell the truth, particularly bad night terrors have me go completely ballistic the morning immediately after. Every single one of them is exhausting and not fun to experience. Thank you for bringing me to my senses before things could get worse.”
Gadget could hardly reply. He was stunned.
“...You’re welcome, Sonic.”
As the two opened the door to go back downstairs, they were greeted by Amy, Knuckles, and Silver right there in front of them. They had been eavesdropping on the conversation the entire time.
Sonic gave a chuckle and sighed. “Yeah, okay, I should’ve shared this with the rest of you too.”
Three hours later, the quintet decided to take a stroll throughout Station Square to distract their minds from the events of the previous night. They stumbled upon a plot of non-urbanized land within the city. Thinking this would be the perfect place to relax, the five eagerly sprinted across the open field as they effortlessly scaled the numerous rolling hills it had to offer.
Reaching the other side of the field, the grass beneath their feet soon became sand as they trekked onto the Emerald Coast beach and reached the hotel. As they took a poolside seat, they noticed an ebony creature sitting alone in one of the deck chairs. His top quill faced down while the rest of his quills faced up, he had a patch of chest fur, and what appeared to be rings around his wrists and ankles.
“Shadow?” Sonic blurted out, not meaning to say out loud.
As the unknown visitor turned his head in their direction, it was instantly clear that Shadow had also come here. He had flinched at the sound of his name, and was even more surprised to discover it was his comrades. He sighed and shook his head.
“You never cease to surprise me, blue hedgehog,” he muttered.
“I tend to do that well, don’t I?” Sonic bantered with a cheeky grin across his face.
“Don’t get too self-confident, faker,” Shadow retorted. “Perhaps you should stick to aimlessly running around like a dolt.”
The blue speedster simply chuckled at the other hedgehog’s comment. “What are you doing here anyway?”
“Well, right now, I’m just taking a break,” the Ultimate Lifeform replied.
“Just right now? Well, what’s the reason you’re in Station Square to begin with?” Knuckles asked.
“Well, I was coming here so I wasn’t just having night terrors in a familiar setting every night,” Shadow admitted. “But since that hasn’t worked, now I’m just having night terrors in an unfamiliar setting. So now, instead of just having a hard time trusting anybody, I’m now having a hard time trusting anybody and anything.”
Sonic simply looked down into the water, picking up the sound of the tiny splashes of water that reached the pool’s edge.
“Yeah, I definitely feel you,” Knuckles chirped. “I always found it easy to trust people, but all that changed after the war.”
As the echidna finished his sentence, the roar of a jet engine overhead startled the six anthropomorphic animals. As they looked up, it was traveling tremendously fast and dangerously close to the ground. Thankfully, the plane zoomed off with no harm done.
Sonic instantly felt anxiety beginning to settle in; this time, however, he didn’t feel that a meltdown was imminent. He excused himself as he entered the hotel lobby and sat on one of the benches nearest to the door in order to regroup.
As he stepped back out, he assured everyone that he was fine and that it was simply “butterflies in his stomach.” The other five took his word for it and Shadow soon parted ways with the group as they moved away from the beach in search of other activities to do in the city.
After twelve hours of touring Station Square’s lesser-well-known places, the quintet headed back to the apartment. That night, Sonic’s memory of the plane speeding overhead began to give him anxiety again but, just like last time, he didn’t feel an attack was about to happen. Sure enough, none happened and he fell asleep without incident.
A week later, Sonic was back at his old stomping grounds in the city. They had left Station Square not too long prior and Sonic informed his friends that he would prefer to spend some time alone for a short while immediately upon returning home. They obliged, and Sonic was on his own. As he glanced out the back window to gaze at the early morning sun, he began to wonder if the support he had received from his friends throughout the weeks and months following the war was either actually genuine or worth it.
For the last year, he had, for the most part, shied away from interacting with others no matter how hard he tried and the bland lifestyle he was leading as a result was beginning to isolate him from others even further. Sonic sat down on the couch and pondered. He had never realized it until now, but he was beginning to lose it as the months went by; his once-carefree demeanor had almost completely erased itself from existence, his depression got exponentially worse, and he barely found any joy in the activities that had once given him such a great time.
The blue hedgehog was asking himself so many questions. Did he truly want to keep pushing forward the way he has been over the past fourteen months? Was there really a reason to do things anymore? Would anyone care if he was gone?
He quickly concluded his answers to the first two questions, but struggled on the third. On one hand, his friends have repeatedly expressed how important that Sonic had been in their lives and how they were grateful for him. But on the other hand, he kept thinking about how his actions would cause more harm than good on occasion.
“It’s my own dumb decisions that gets everybody else into trouble. Not putting the fake Chaos Emerald into the Eclipse Cannon before going to save Amy so we could have avoided the entire thing with the giant lizard. Being careless in my super state and getting captured because of it, subsequently tearing the planet into pieces. Nearly losing my closest friend because of my dimwitted ways back on the Lost Hex.”
“No,” Sonic said. “I think things would be better for them if I weren’t in their way. I’ve become so toxic and unlikable, my friends merely tolerate me rather than like me.”
After a long while of thinking to himself, he made his decision.
“I’m taking the easy way out.”
teachers!au: chaperoning
based on this post of head canons i made, for #3
rating: G
song pairing: the smell of chlorine
don’t miss the first two in the series:
teachers!au: subject matter
teachers!au: rainy day lunch
Scully huffed as she entered the dimly-lit gym. She and Mulder were somehow always nominated to chaperone the school dance. They were notorious for drawing the short end of the stick when it came to school events and chaperoning. People probably assumed that because they were younger that they wouldn’t be annoyed or bothered to come. Quite the contrary. Scully had never liked school dances. As a high schooler, she had skipped them as much as possible. One time she did attend with the school jock. It had turned out that it was a cruel prank, and she was left high and dry by herself, after having been ridiculed for her nerdiness and affinity for science. And her dress of choice. And her looks. She didn’t wear her glasses much after that incident. Her mother had even gotten pictures beforehand, capturing those awful memories for years to come. Yep. She hated school dances.
She spotted Mulder standing awkwardly at the punch table, his eyes patrolling to make sure no miscreant was around to spike the punch. She walked around the perimeter of the gym, avoiding the mass group of teenagers on the outskirts, save for a few girls sitting on the bleachers crying and the goth kids sneering at her from a dark corner. Mulder caught sight of her and smiled goofily, dipping the ladle into the punch bowl and pouring it into a see-through plastic cup for her.
“Punch?” He handed her the cup. She took a sip, swallowing the frothy substance. They served the same Seven-Up and ice cream punch every year, no matter what the theme. “You like the decor? You know, the dance committee came to me asking for ideas because they couldn’t think of any.” Mulder said proudly, nodding toward the huge banner posted over the doors. It read: ALIEN INVASION!
“I can’t believe they asked you,” Scully set the punch down on the table, unable to stifle a laugh. “It’s so dorky.” “What? Dorky? Aliens are cool, Scully. Not just the sci-fi geeks think so,” Mulder pointed at his shirt, which had a flying saucer on it and underneath inscribed: I WANT TO BELIEVE.
“Looks like you are a sci-fi geek then, Mulder. Because not only do I think aliens aren’t cool, I also think aliens don’t exist.”
“Why do you hurt me like this, Scully? Of course aliens exist! Just as the Loch Ness Monster exists, just as Bigfoot, just as the Jersey Devil—I could go on.” Mulder listed the crypts on his fingers as examples, which just seemed to deter Scully even more.
“Please don’t.” Scully chuckled as Mulder clutched his chest, over his heart.
“Right in the heart, Scully, your words cut deep.”
A few kids clamored around the punch table, breaking up their conversation. Scully and Mulder handed them their drinks and let a quietness settle between them, the music humming at a moderate level in the background.
“You said the last time we had to chaperone one of these things that you didn’t like school dances, right?” Mulder broke the silence as the last of the kids finally drifted away from the table.
“Correct.” Scully felt sort of an anxiousness sweep through her, as the bad memories surfaced for the second time that night.
“Why? I always imagined you’d be the popular girl. You’re so beautiful and charismatic.” Mulder tried to catch her eyes, but she focused them on her shoes, biting her lip uneasily. He clasped her hand in his, sensing her affliction.
“You’re kind, Mulder, but uh... many people didn’t think those things about me in high school. I got made fun of a lot during high school.” Scully still refused to meet his warm eyes, knowing she might melt into a puddle of embarrassment or sorrow if she looked into them. She settled to squeeze his hand instead.
“Did you ever end up dancing at any of the dances you went to?” Mulder slid his thumb across the top of her hand, an idea suddenly coming to him.
“No. I left pretty early on.”
Scully felt her arm being pulled. She looked up, and she instantly knew it was a mistake. Those hazel eyes bore into her with tender sensitivity as he drew her away from the punch table. She really was going to collapse into a puddle on the floor. His arm wrapped around her waist and pulled her close into him Their fingers were still interlocked as they swayed to the slow beat of the music. After a few moments, Scully allowed her head to rest on his chest.
“I used to have glasses. Well, I do still have glasses, I just elect not to wear them in public.” Scully murmured. She could hear the steady pulse of Mulder’s heart beat.
“You should wear them sometime. I’d love to see a glimpse of ‘high school Scully’.” His chin was situated on top of her head, and Scully felt the low rumble of his words vibrate in his throat.
“I know I just made fun of you for being a sci-fi geek, but that’s exactly what I was in high school. I loved science, I still do. The only difference now is that people actually recognize the importance of my passion instead of laughing at it. And before I started straightening it, my hair was so puffy. Even for the eighties. I’m not sure you would even like ‘high school Scully’.” She gripped him tighter, insecurity washing over her in waves. She hadn’t really spoken to anyone about this before. And, God, it was Mulder she was talking to.
“Of course I would like ‘high school Scully’. I bet we’d have bonded over the intricacies of balancing chemical equations or what exactly caused a solar eclipse. And I bet any version of me would have thought that any version of you was the best thing he’d ever laid eyes on.”
Scully shifted back to look up at Mulder. Her heart felt like it was rocketing, soaring through her chest. She stood on her tiptoes and kissed his cheek, remaining for as long as she could. When she pulled back, her heart was still fluttering wildly in her chest. Two songs had passed since they had been dancing.
“Come on, we gotta make sure that no one’s spiked the punch since we’ve been gone,” Scully led Mulder back to the table by the hand.
