KP.3.1.1 is still the dominant COVID-19 variant in the United States as it accounts for nearly 60% of positive cases, but the XEC variant is not far behind, recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data shows.

"CDC is monitoring the XEC variant," Rosa Norman, a CDC spokesperson told USA TODAY. "XEC is the proposed name of a recombinant, or hybrid, of the closely related Omicron lineages KS.1.1 and KP.3.3."

The variant, which first appeared in Berlin in late June, has increasingly seen hundreds of cases in Germany, France, Denmark and Netherlands, according to a report by Australia-based data integration specialist Mike Honey.

The CDC's Nowcast data tracker, which displays COVID-19 estimates and projections for two-week periods, reflected that the KP.3.1.1 variant accounted for 57.2% of positive infections, followed by XEC at 10.7% in the two-week stretch starting on Sept. 29 and ending on Oct. 12.

KP.3.1.1 first became the leading variant between July 21 and Aug. 3.

The latest data shows a rise in each variant's percentage of total cases from Sept. 15-28, as KP.3.1.1 rose by 4.6%, and XEC rose by 5.4%. Previously, the KP.3.1.1 variant made up 52.6% of cases and XEC accounted for 5.3% from Sept. 15-28.

Changes in COVID-19 test positivity within a week Data collected by the CDC shows a drop in positivity rate across the board, while the four states in Region 10 had the biggest decrease (-2.7%) in positive COVID-19 cases from Sept. 29, 2024, to Oct. 5, 2024.

The data was posted on Oct. 11.

"CDC is not aware of new or unusual symptoms associated with XEC or any other co-circulating lineage of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19," Norman said.

The government agency outlines the basic symptoms of COVID-19 on its website. These symptoms can appear between two and 14 days after exposure to the virus and can range from mild to severe.

The Council on American Islamic relations (CAIR), an organization US Air Force Investigator and Investigative reporter David Gaubatz called the Muslim Mafia, is a proven front for the terrorist organization Hamas, and according to the Justice department an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land terrorist financing trial, CAIR Is listed by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt charity. 

CAIR’s connection with Hamas was most recently brought to CAIR national director Nihad Awad gave a speech referring to the horrific Hamas October 7, 2023 stating that he was “happy to see the event and that Palestinians in Gaza have a right to self defense but that Israel does not. The speech so shocked the White House that a spokesman for President Biden condemned the remarks by Nihad Awad, the national executive director of CAIR.  

Additionally, in 2014, the United Arab Emirates officially designated CAIR as a terrorist organization.  In 2006 the co-founder of CAIR's parent organization, the Islamic Association for Palestine was sentenced to 57 months in prison on terrorist financing Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a designated terrorist organization and ally of Hamas also involved in the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.  In 2004, CAIR's northern Virginia director Abdurahman Alamoudi pled guilty to terrorism and conspiracy charges and was sentenced to 23 years.  

Islamic convert Randall Todd Royer, CAIR communications specialist and civil rights coordinator trained withal Qaeda linked Kashmiri terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba and was charged with conspiring to aid al-Qaeda and Taliban battling US troops in Afghanistan and sentenced to 20 years on April 9, 2004. In September 2003 CAIR former Community Affairs Director Bassem Khafagi pled guilty to bank and visa fraud and agreed to be deported to Egypt after he had financed terrorism and published materials advocating suicide attacks against the US and other illegal activities that had taken place while he was employed by CAIR. 

CAIR Michigan fundraiser Rabih Kaddad was arrested on terrorism related charges and deported from the US due to his work as Executive Director of the Global Relief Foundation, which was accused by the Treasury Department of financing al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations.

As such in addition to enjoying tax advantages of their own, CAIR's 501 (c) (3) status makes it eligible to receive donations from foundations that are also.  Some of the foundations that have made donations to CAIR include American Online Giving Foundation, the California Endowment, the Weingart Foundation, Schwab Charitable Fund, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, East Bay Community Foundation and many others.  

Fortunately there are remedies available to informed and concerned citizens.  Any citizen can complain that an undeserving organization is enjoying tax exempt status by one of these two processes the public can use to notify the IRS of perceived violations by tax-exempt organizations. Ghassan Elashi: One of CAIR’s founding directors, he was convicted in 2004 of illegally shipping high-tech goods to terror state Syria and is serving 80 months in prison. He was also convicted of providing material support to Hamas in the Holy Land Foundation terror-financing trial. He was chairman of the charity, which provided seed capital to CAIR. Elashi is related to Hamas leader Mousa Abu Marzook.

Muthanna al-Hanooti: The CAIR director’s home was raided in 2006 by FBI agents in connection with an active terrorism investigation. Agents also searched the offices of his advocacy group, Focus on Advocacy and Advancement of International Relations, which al-Hanooti operates out of Dearborn, Mich., and Washington, D.C.Al-Hanooti, who emigrated to the U.S. from Iraq, formerly helped run a suspected Hamas terror front called LIFE for Relief and Development. Its Michigan offices also were raided in September 2006. In 2004, LIFE’s Baghdad office was raided by U.S. troops, who seized files and computers. Al-Hanooti is related to Sheik Mohammed al-Hanooti, an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

Muthanna al-Hanooti, wearing traditional headgarb “Al-Hanooti collected over $6 million for support of Hamas,” according to a 2001 FBI report, and was present with CAIR and Holy Land officials at a secret Hamas fundraising summit held in 1993 at a Philadelphia hotel. Prosecutors added his name to the list of unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land case. Although Al-Hanooti denies supporting Hamas, he has praised Palestinian suicide bombers as “martyrs” who are “alive in the eyes of Allah.”

Abdurahman Alamoudi: Another CAIR director, he is serving 23 years in federal prison for plotting terrorism. Alamoudi, who was caught on tape complaining that bin Laden hadn’t killed enough Americans in the U.S. embassy bombings in Africa, was one of al-Qaida’s top fundraisers in America, according to the U.S. Treasury Department.

Siraj Wahhaj: A member of CAIR’s board of advisers, Wahhaj was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The radical Brooklyn imam was close to convicted terrorist Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman and defended him during his trial.

Imam Siraj Wahhaj “Muslim Mafia,” citing co-author’s Sperry’s previous book “Infiltration” as well as terror expert Steven Emerson’s research, reports that Wahhaj, a black convert to Islam, is converting gang members to Islam and holding “jihad camps” for them. With a combination of Islam and Uzis, he has said, the street thugs will be a powerful force for Islam the day America “will crumble.” Wahhaj was a key speaker at CAIR’s 15th annual fund-raising banquet in Arlington, Va., in 2009.

Randall “Ismail” Royer: The former CAIR communications specialist and civil-rights coordinator is serving 20 years in prison in connection with the Virginia Jihad Network, which he led while employed by CAIR at its Washington headquarters. The group trained to kill U.S. soldiers overseas, cased the FBI headquarters and cheered the space shuttle Columbia tragedy. Al-Qaida operative Ahmed Abu Ali, convicted of plotting to assassinate President George W. Bush, was among those who trained with Royer’s Northern Virginia cell.

Bassam Khafagi: Another CAIR official, Khafagi was arrested in 2003 while serving as CAIR’s director of community affairs. He pleaded guilty to charges of bank and visa fraud stemming from a federal counter-terror probe of his leadership role in the Islamic Assembly of North America, which has supported al-Qaida and advocated suicide attacks on America. He was sentenced to 10 months in prison and deported to his native Egypt.

Laura Jaghlit: A civil-rights coordinator for CAIR, her Washington-area home was raided by federal agents after 9/11 as part of an investigation into terrorist financing, money laundering and tax fraud. Her husband Mohammed Jaghlit, a key leader in the Saudi-backed SAAR network, is a target of the still-active probe.Jaghlit sent two letters accompanying donations – one for $10,000, the other for $5,000 – from the SAAR Foundation to Sami al-Arian, now a convicted terrorist. In each letter, according to a federal affidavit, “Jaghlit instructed al-Arian not to disclose the contribution publicly or to the media.”Investigators suspect the funds were intended for Palestinian terrorists via a U.S. front called WISE, which at the time employed an official who personally delivered a satellite phone battery to Osama bin Laden. The same official also worked for Jaghlit’s group.In addition, Jaghlit donated a total of $37,200 to the Holy Land Foundation, which prosecutors say is a Hamas front. Jaghlit subsequently was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the case.

Nihad Awad

Nihad Awad: Wiretap evidence from the Holy Land case puts CAIR’s executive director at the Philadelphia meeting of Hamas leaders and activists in 1993 that was secretly recorded by the FBI. Participants hatched a plot to disguise payments to Hamas terrorists as charitable giving.During the meeting, according to FBI transcripts, Awad was recorded discussing the propaganda effort. He mentions Ghassan Dahduli, whom he worked with at the time at the Islamic Association for Palestine, another Hamas front. Both were IAP officers. Dahduli’s name also was listed in the address book of bin Laden’s personal secretary, Wadi al-Hage, who is serving a life sentence in prison for his role in the U.S. embassy bombings. Dahduli, an ethnic-Palestinian like Awad, was deported to Jordan after 9/11 for refusing to cooperate in the terror investigation. (An April 28, 2009, letter from FBI assistant director Richard C. Powers to Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz. – which singles out CAIR chief Awad for suspicion – explains how the group’s many Hamas connections caused the FBI to sever ties with CAIR.)Awad’s and Dahduli’s phone numbers are listed in a Muslim Brotherhood document seized by federal investigators revealing “important phone numbers” for the “Palestine Section” of the Brotherhood in America. The court exhibit showed Hamas fugitive Mousa Abu Marzook listed on the same page with Awad.

Omar Ahmad: U.S. prosecutors also named CAIR’s founder and chairman emeritus as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land case. Ahmad, too, was placed at the Philadelphia meeting, FBI special agent Lara Burns testified at the trial. Prosecutors also designated him as a member of the Muslim Brotherhood’s “Palestine Committee” in America. Ahmad, like his CAIR partner Awad, is ethnic-Palestinian.(Though both Ahmad and Awad were senior leaders of IAP, the Hamas front, neither of their biographical sketches posted on CAIR’s website mentions their IAP past.)

Nabil Sadoun: A CAIR board member, Sadoun has served on the board of the United Association for Studies and Research, which investigators believe to be a key Hamas front in America. In fact, Sadoun co-founded UASR with Hamas leader Marzook. The Justice Department added UASR to the list of unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land case. UPDATE: In 2010, Sadoun was ordered deported to his native Jordan. An immigration judge referenced Sadoun’s relationship with Hamas and the Holy Land Foundation during a deportation hearing.

Wheeling Reads Festival at Library on September 9

The Ohio County Public Library will host its 2023 Wheeling Reads: One Book, One Community Finale Festival, on September 9tyh as the culmination of a season of programming and events based on author Jennifer Haigh’s novel, “Heat and Light.” Wheeling Reads, in partnership with the Writers Association of Northern Appalachia (WANA) and West Virginia Writers, Inc., and with funding from the City of Wheeling Arts and Cultural Commission, encourages Ohio Valley residents to read Haigh’s book, which tells the story of a western Pennsylvania coal town that finds new life and hardship when a fracking company begins operations. Over the summer, the library has hosted and continues to host events, lectures and discussions on issues surrounding the book, including climate change, environmental justice and hope for the future. The season’s programming will culminate at the Wheeling Reads Festival on September 9, at which Haigh will be the guest speaker at 4 PM in the library's auditorium. All events are free and open to the public. A group of Wheeling writers will read from their work at 11 AM, followed by an art workshop at noon led by Cheryl Ryan Harshman, a poetry workshop at 1 PM led by Allison Puitinii Davis, and a writing for young adults workshop at 2 PM, led by Nora Shalaway Carpenter. Heels Down Magazine: One Blow To The Head Can Last A Lifetime

Imagine holding a half-dozen coins in the palm of your hand. Quarters, dimes, pennies. You know what they are but when you try to add them up, your mind goes blank. A dull ache kicks in at the back of your head.

Now you’re staring at the clock, clearly and squarely. You can see the numbers staring back, but your brain can’t register the time no matter how hard you try.

For five months of Chelan Kozak’s life, she couldn’t count numbers. For 152 excruciating days after a traumatic head injury, she didn’t know if she ever would again.

Heels Down Magazine is exploring the stories of equestrian athletes who’ve suffered from concussions, and the short and long term effects of the injury on their health and performance. This is the first story in an ongoing series.

As a 20-something advanced event rider, Chelan felt invincible.

She climbed the ranks of the sport quickly, being short-listed for the Canadian Eventing team for the first time at 23. She’d go on to ride many CCI3* and CCI4* courses, with a fearlessness that’s reserved solely for the spirit of eventers. She’d eventually represent Canada at the Olympics and the World Equestrian Games.

“The good ole’ days,” Chelan, now 49, jokes.

But she wasn’t invincible.

In the spring of ‘95, Chelan was piloting a horse around an advanced cross country course in Northern Virginia. The pair galloped toward a fence in the middle of course that required them to jump a solid vertical from a downhill spot.

“This is the type of jump that would absolutely be illegal now,” Chelan recalls.

Her horse seemed a little off in the weeks leading up to this event, but a veterinarian cleared them to compete. Still, Chelan wishes she would have trusted her intuition.

“He clearly didn’t have it in him to get over it,” Chelan said.

The pair flipped over the fence and rolled down the hill.

Cue a sudden and silent darkness, followed by a loud ringing in the ears and a brightness that stings through the eyes. Chelan felt fuzzy when she came around. She had a broken tooth and nose. A pounding ache cut at the back of head.

She’d learn later that she had a hairline fracture in her skull.

“I didn’t get checked out right away because that’s just how it was back then,” Chelan said. In fact, she would go on to compete another horse just two weeks later. “Head injuries weren’t regarded in the same way that they are now.”

But soon, the ill effects of a serious concussion would begin to set in. And it would change her life forever.

“My memory was severely affected,” she explained. “I had no short term memory after that. Still to this day, I don’t.”

She says she’ll run into past clients or colleagues and recognize their faces. But their names remain elusive until they introduce themselves. Five months after the accident, Chelan could finally count numbers again.

Perhaps the most impactful part of her injury is how it changed her personality and the lense through which she views life.

“It’s hard to explain, but I guess I’ve become more detached. I feel like I look at things sideways now instead of more emotionally,” she said. “People dismiss it as me being a bitch. It’s a label I’m used to now. Instead of understanding that this is just how it is, and it’s the result of a traumatic injury.”

Chelan was treated by doctors, but the lasting effects of concussions still largely remain a mystery. An estimated 1.7 million Americans sustain traumatic brain injuries every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of those, 52,000 people die. Nearly 80 percent of people with concussions are treated and released from an emergency department with no follow up from a brain or trauma specialist.

And even with the high-profile, mainstream headlines and conversations last year about concussions in major league sports like the NFL (there was even a blockbuster movie called Concussion released last year), doctors still can’t agree on how to diagnose it.

They can agree, however, that a proper diagnosis is critical immediately after a fall or traumatic event to protect the brain from a potential second one, which can exacerbate symptoms and prolong the recovery process.

Following her concussion, Chelan’s routine changed permanently to accommodate her new inabilities. Post-it notes remind herself of daily chores and errands. Her clients that she trains out of her Footnote Farms in South Langley, British Columbia, have learned to deal with it too.

“Clients know to remind me over and over again. They have to follow up. That’s the only way I survive,” she said.

Chelan still rides and trains horses. She’s developing a two-star eventing prospect now. But after spending decades learning to live with the lasting effects of a concussion, her personal safety is of utmost importance now.

“I’m just so much more aware now,” she said about her safety.

She’s smart about choosing when and which horse to ride, and does her best to never put herself in a dangerous position. Most importantly, she said she isn’t in so much of a rush anymore.

“When I was in my 20s, it was hard to slow down because you didn’t want to lose your nerve. You don’t want to miss an opportunity,” she described.

Chelan is adamant about replacing her helmet every couple of years or immediately after a fall. She said she leads by example for her students. She also thinks the introduction of air vests during cross country has helped reduce the risk of whiplash-related concussions.

“It’s scary as hell to go against our natural instinct, which is to protect ourselves, and instead gallop and jump a horse,” Chelan said.

But we do it anyway.

“I remember people telling me not to ride after that bad fall, but I was back in the saddle in just a few days,” Chelan says now, with some regret. “It’s crazy when you think about it now, and everything we know about head injuries. I have friends who are worse off than me from falls and head injuries. I consider myself lucky.”
