Why Choose a Family Lawyer?
Family law is a complex area of legal practice that involves issues like divorce, property settlements, and child custody. It is a career that requires dedication to specialised education and understanding of the complexities of family relationships.
It is also important to be aware of the costs involved in a family law case. An affordable family lawyer will help you to understand the legal jargon and the related costs in the case.
Child custody and support
When choosing a Family Lawyer Sydney, look for someone with good communication skills and empathy. This is especially important if your case involves child custody. Also, make sure that the lawyer specialises in family law and has a comprehensive understanding of its nuances.
If one parent has a history of domestic violence, for example, the court may take that into account when determining custody. The court might doubt their ability to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the children.
CM Law is a family law firm in Sydney that provides legal advice on a variety of concerns. Its lawyers can handle matters related to property law, business law, divorce mediation proceedings, and estate planning. They can also defend traffic offences and criminal law cases at the Local, District, and Supreme courts.
Divorce
The breakdown of a marriage is emotionally devastating for both parties. You need to work with a family lawyer who is compassionate and understands your needs. They will listen to your concerns and explain the law to you in a way that you can understand it.
In Australia, you can dissolve your marriage legally by getting a divorce. However, you need to prove that your relationship has ceased permanently and that you have been living separately for at least 12 months. You must also demonstrate that there is no chance of reconciliation.
Although court involvement is necessary in some cases, Australian family law encourages alternative dispute resolution methods such as mediation and negotiation. These can help you resolve a variety of issues, including child custody and property settlement.
Adoption
Adoption is a legal process through which individuals or couples become the legal parents of children who are not biologically theirs. Family lawyers can help with this process by ensuring that birth parents are informed and that the adoption is in their best interests. They can also assist with intercountry adoptions and intrafamily adoptions.
Before choosing a family lawyer, it is important to know their background and credentials. You can check with your local law society or disciplinary body to find out more about their status and ethics.
Sexton Family Law is a boutique firm on the North Shore that specialises in family law. Their team includes Accredited Family Law Specialists and is highly regarded in the industry. They offer advice in simple language and keep the client’s best interest in mind at all times.
Prenuptial agreements
A prenuptial agreement is an option for anyone who wishes to keep their assets separate and avoid potentially costly litigation in the event of divorce. They also help individuals determine and clarify their expectations about spousal support.
A family lawyer can help couples discuss finances in a productive manner and develop a shared philosophy about wealth. This can be difficult, but it is essential to ensure a positive outcome in a divorce. It is important to find an attorney who can provide clear explanations and realistic expectations.
Located in Sydney, Australia, the firm offers affordable and flexible services. Its team of professionals is experienced in handling legal issues like domestic violence, urgent applications, child custody, property settlements and financial disputes, and spousal maintenance. They are available 24/7 and offer a free consultation.
Property settlement
When a relationship ends, a Legal advisor Hurstville settlement is needed to work out what each party will receive. The process can be complex and requires the expertise of a skilled family lawyer. We can help you reach an agreement with your partner through mediation and negotiations and draft a legally binding Financial Agreement.
The Family Court has a broad discretion to determine what is ‘fair’ in your circumstances when dividing property and assets. The first step is to identify all the assets, liabilities and financial resources you and your partner have. This includes everything from real estate and cars to bank accounts and shares.
This is referred to as the “asset pool.” We also take into account superannuation. It can be very complicated and time consuming to separate superannuation from other property, but it is important that this is done correctly.

This is a question that is often asked by parents when they have separated. The answer is different for every family. Examples of factors that will affect the Child Support that you pay or receive include the number of nights the children are in your care and each parties’ incomes

the ticking of the clock seems slower & slower
January 7, 2020; King’s Landing
Just after 4 o’clock in the morning, a shriek is heard from the portrait gallery, causing detectives and guests alike to scurry toward the commotion. No one is certain of what they will find, but they are surprised at what they do.
Set up on a pedestal, neatly arranged to look like an art installation, complete with fiberglass cube overtop of it, is Balon Greyjoy’s heart.
A note accompanies the discovery, taped to marble pillar with shocking precision, the ink so red one of the detectives is overheard asking whether or not it is actually written in the man’s own blood. Though the contents of the note are not publicly released, the witness who found the heart repeats it to anyone who asks.
Your heart can rest in a morgue, dissected so much that it will never return to the salt from which it came.
The note displays a shocking knowledge of information regarding historical Ironborn funeral rituals, though it goes over the heads of most. [ In the War of the Dragons, many Ironborn had died on the seas and shores away from the Iron Islands. While the bodies were often given to the Drowned God of the Sea, their hearts were always sent home for burial on the island they had come from. This practice is woefully outdated and history books only mention this in the most obscure sense. It is a fact that only the most learned in the Drowned God would know. ]
Many attendees are filled with revulsion and some even faint. After this discovery, it is incredibly difficult for the staff and the detectives to keep order. Most guests are questioned a second time, the detectives wanting to be seen as doing something. After his second interrogation, GENDRY BARATHEON is arrested and brought into custody, though the exact charges are unclear as he was never seen anywhere near the family wing of the house. ROBERT BARATHEON, his father, in a shocking display of paternal care that he has never before displayed, argues with a detective until he is blue in the face and the detective is lying on the ground with a broken jaw. Father and son are handcuffed at the same time and led out of 14 Valyrian Way a little after 5 o’clock in the morning.
More interviews continue, with an emphasis placed on those closest to the BARATHEONS. At 5:30 in the morning, EDDARD STARK is arrested alongside JON ARRYN, both men looking resigned yet confused at this strange turn of events.
The final arrest comes just before anyone is allowed to leave, with VISERYS TARGARYEN being led out of the ballroom in handcuffs. Angry and thirsty for revenge, THEON GREYJOY punches him just once before the prince is led out into a waiting car.
For the remaining attendees, there is little left to do but speculate, since it is quite clear that there is little possibility that all of these men worked together to kill the Prime Minister.
No, some whisper, Military Intelligence is simply grasping at straws and hoping something will stick.
The remaining guests are finally allowed to leave around 6 o’clock in the morning, just as the first hints of dawn arrive, the red sky ominously reflecting on the snowfall that had accumulated on the cobblestones during the night. Though the detectives have no desire to allow anyone to leave, they cannot hold hundreds of guests without probable cause - especially not now that their lawyers are awake and already threatening legal action against Military Intelligence.
After the guests have left, detectives comb through the house once more looking for any clues they may have missed. It is during the sweep of the third floor that they find the body of GREATJON UMBER, a well-known proponent of Northern independence and a former professional boxer from the North. Further inspection shows that he fought off his attacker as best he could and the detectives are flummoxed that one person could overpower two strong men with none being any the wiser.
JON UMBER’S death is kept from the press at this point in time, though it does not take long for the rumors to circulate. It appears that anyone who was able to leave the Prime Minister’s Residence was, in fact, quite lucky.
the aftermath
Upon arrival at Military Intelligence Offices, EDDARD STARK confers with his attorney and is visited by the newly abdicated RHAEGAR TARGARYEN. He is released before ever being booked, though the papers question his honor at every turn, convinced that he has something to hide.
ROBERT BARATHEON is released from jail on JANUARY 8. His assault of the detective is swept under the rug thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous party. His son, GENDRY, is released on JANUARY 9, on a hefty bond and has his passport taken from him. Baratheon money, the papers note, can cleanse even the evilest person of all manner of sins.
VISERYS TARGARYEN, it turns out, remains a diplomat and as such has diplomatic immunity. He is held for the maximum period of time [ three days ] before being released into the custody of his elder brother.
JON ARRYN, however, remains in jail on trumped-up charges of murder that make sense to no one. The people of the VALE begin to riot in THE EYRIE and there are several demonstrations planned for KING’S LANDING in the coming weeks.

A Sydney man is seeking more than half a million dollars in damages from the NSW Government for maliciously prosecuting a false rape claim made against him by his North Shore paediatrician wife.
A jury acquitted the man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, of rape, domestic violence, assault and other charges in 2017 after Sydney District Court Judge Mark Williams issued a rare Prasad direction.
A Prasad direction allows a jury to find a defendant not guilty any time after the close of the Crown in cases where there is insufficient evidence to justify a conviction.
On legal advice, the man had pleaded guilty to two counts of domestic violence — relating to an email and damage to his then-wife’s mobile phone (after discovering explicit text messages between her and another man) but the judge dismissed those charges without recording a conviction.
The man spent 32 days in jail on remand, an “extraordinarily difficult” experience given he had no criminal record and one that continues to haunt him to this day.
“I was never far from ending it all after my release from prison,” he told news.com.au yesterday. “The actions of police were so deliberate and savage that it made me doubt everything.”
The judge slammed the case against the man as “most unsatisfactory” and said prosecutors had failed to take into account “cogent and consistent objective evidence” that backed up the man’s claim that the sexual encounter at the heart of the rape charge was in fact consensual.
Defence lawyer Greg Walsh told the court the man and his legal team took photographic evidence that corroborated his story and discredited hers to the police, but it was ignored. “Was it ideological, was it wilful blindness? I don’t know,” Mr Walsh said. “All the evidence pointed to the fact that this was an innocent man who should not have been charged.”
“I REALLY NEED A PIC OF THAT P***Y PLEASE”
The couple’s marriage had been on the rocks for several months prior to the wife taking her fake rape, assault and domestic violence claims to police because of her long-term abuse of prescription pills.
During the man's 10-day trial, the court heard evidence his former wife was addicted to the opiate painkiller Tramadol and wrote scripts for herself in her husband’s name — a practice that continued for several years.
“She was self-prescribing for five years using my name so she could get Tramadol,” the man told news.com.au.
“Her fear of being reported when the marriage broke down was the genesis of the fake rape claims.”
The couple’s relationship took another knock on May 4, 2015 after the man discovered a series of sexually explicit text messages between her and a man in London.
“I really need a pic of that p***y please,” one of the messages to his wife read.
The pair got into a heated argument before the man threw the wife’s mobile phone out the front door of their Sydney home, smashing the screen. The damage to the device was the subject of one of the domestic violence counts.
The second count of domestic violence related to a sarcastic email the man sent to his wife, featuring an explicit photograph she had previously sent to him, in which he suggested it was the type of image the man in London had requested.
Prosecutors argued the email was an example of “revenge porn” but the judge dismissed both counts, noting the man had been forced to defend himself at trial at considerable expense against serious charges that should not have been brought against him.
“Cops worked on this case for two years,” the man told news.com.au.
“Judges, courts and jurors were used. It probably cost the tax payers over a million dollars in man hours alone. What a huge waste of time and money.”
The woman moved out shortly after. She told police that when she returned to the marital home six weeks later on June 15, 2015 to visit their dogs, her former husband raped her three times.
In her statement to police, obtained by news.com.au, the doctor alleged she was raped shortly after walking through the front door.
“The dogs came running toward me and (the husband) invited me in to see them,” she told police.
She alleged her former husband then “kissed her very forcefully” before shoving his hand down her skirt “to the point where it hurt me”.
She said he led her into the living room before pushing her up against a wall and having sex with her from behind.
“I tried to push him away with my hand,” she said in her statement. “He then forcefully had sexual intercourse with me so hard that my forehead was hitting the wall. I tried to turn around so I could see what he would do next. I didn’t want to be facing away from him. He was smiling.”
She claimed she was raped another two times shortly afterwards. But it was all an elaborate lie and the defence proved it by tendering photographic evidence from a security camera in the home which showed the sex to be consensual.
“I had installed cameras in the house a day earlier but she didn’t know that when she went to police,” the man told news.com.au.
A text message exchange between the pair the following night in which she wished her husband a “safe flight” hours before he flew to Europe on a work trip was produced in court.
Four days after he left the country, the former wife walked into Gordon Police Station on Sydney’s North Shore and made claims of rape, assault and domestic violence that would ultimately be dismissed by a judge.
When he returned, police were waiting for him at Sydney Airport, arresting him in a dramatic swoop in full view of fellow travellers.
WRONGFUL ARREST AND FALSE IMPRISONMENT
The basis of the man’s legal claim is that police and the DPP went ahead with the charges against him despite having been alerted to evidence that proved the so-called victim was lying.
That included video footage of the sexual encounters on June 15, 2015 which proved they were consensual.
In issuing a Prasad direction and dismissing proceedings against the man, Judge Williams acknowledged the case should never have gone to trial.
The man’s statement of claim, obtained by news.com.au, lists the defendants as the State of NSW (Commissioner of Police), the NSW Director of Public Prosecutions and his ex-wife, who remains employed as a paediatrician at a Sydney hospital.
The man told news.com.au that his legal team have yet to put a final figure on the compensation he will be seeking but estimated it would be in excess of $500,000.
That included an estimated $200,000 in lost income, $110,000 in legal fees plus damages stemming from his horror month in jail.
While Judge Williams awarded the man court costs following his acquittal, he was only able to recoup just over half of his mammoth $270,000 legal bill.
“They accepted $260,000 of that and then they applied the government cap which meant I received $160,000, leaving a $110,000 shortfall,” the man told news.com.au.
The statement of claim describes the man’s dramatic arrest at Sydney Airport on August 20, 2015, which saw police seize his laptop, iPod and hard drive.
“The Plaintiff was refused bail at Mascot Police Station (and) remained in custody for thirty two days until he was granted conditional bail,” the document states.
Under his bail conditions, he was required to surrender his passport and report daily to police, making it impossible to travel overseas for work commitments, resulting in a significant loss of income.
“The arrest and imprisonment of the Plaintiff was wrongful, whereupon the Plaintiff has suffered loss and damages and is entitled to damages, aggravated damages and exemplary damages,” the document states.
“The arrest and imprisonment of the Plaintiff caused him severe mental anguish and distress.”

MAHARLIKA
DID YOU KNOW THAT?
"MAHARLIKA. Long before the Spaniards came to Philippines shores, the Philippine archipelago consisting of 7,169 islands with an area of 1,049,212,962 nautical square miles, including Guam and Hawaii was known as Maharlika. It was populated by Malays and ruled by the Tagean Tallano clans from the ninth to the fifteenth century. When the Spaniards started ruling the Philippines archipelago, they renamed it Hacienda Filipina. Of the many kingdoms in Asia, Maharlika was one of them under King Luisong Tagean Tallano, the father of Raja Lapu-Lapu and Raja Soliman, the successors of King Marikudo of the Sri Vishayan Empire. Its principal products at that time were peanuts (mani) exported to Mexico and European countries and Herbal plants known as "Nilad" with some medicinal qualities which were exported to Mainland China. With the passage of time, the Chinese traders changed the name Maharlika to Maynilad or Maynila.
As in olden days, the kings and their families own their kingdoms and distribute portions to their subjects, especially to the members of the royal clans. This is exactly what happened to the Philippine archipelago, it was owned by the Tagean Tallano clans.
THE SPANIARDS. When the Spaniards came, full control of the islands remained with the descendants of King Luisong, specifically Raja Lapu-Lapu and his successors for Visayas and Mindanao and Raja Soliman and his successors for Luzon. Like conquerors of all kinds, the Spaniards started grabbing lands and distributed them to favored members of the conquering group, thereafter named Haciendas. Because of the land grabbing activities of the Spanish conquistadores, the descendants of King Luisong brought these questionable activities of the conquering armies of Spain to the attention of the Spanish Queen leading to the setting aside of many royal land grants and the issuance of titulo possessorio to become titulo de compra embracing the whole Philippine archipelago in favor of the Tallano clans.
THE BRITISH. In 1762, the British Royal Armies came to Manila with the purpose of defeating the abusive Spanish armies. Finally, in 1764 the British won over the Spaniards. The British Royal Government then issued a Royal Decree, Protocol 01-4 based on the Laws of the West Indies, amending the property rights of King Philip of Spain over the Philippines and granting ownership of the Philippine archipelago to the Tagean Tallano clans. After the signing of the peace accord between the royal governments of Spain and Britain, the Queen of Spain recognized the property rights over the Philippine archipelago based on the Maura Law.
The Tagean-Tallano clan claims ownership of the whole Philippine archipelago and boasts that this ownership was recognized by the Spanish, British, and American colonizers. The descendants of the royal family is in a possession of 720,000 metric tons of gold…a portion of which (about 400,000 metric tons) was deposited in the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, which rests there until now. This is for me, the most interesting part of the story."

FACTUAL COMMENTARY:
In her highly credible expository YouTube video clip entitled "Gold for the Welfare of the Filipino People Jose Rizal & Marcos Involvement Karen Hudes Marcos Go" published on September 12, 2016, KAREN HUDES.who is a graduate of Yale Law School and a lawyer in the World Bank's legal department for more than 20 years, revealed publicly that "JOSE RIZAL WAS THE SON OF PRINCE TALLANO WHO WAS A TWIN OF QUEEN VICTORIA (4:00 on the video).
According to an online article entitled "HISTORY REVISITED dated January 1, 2001 https://s3.amazonaws.com/…/A-100-030-Q-001%3DHISTORY+REVISI…
(accessed on November 1, 2017), the brother of QUEEN VICTORIA of England was known as
PRINCE JULIAN MCLEOD TALLANO
Based on the said article, as a Muslim, Prince Tallano who acquired seven wives,.had pursuit of another Princess, and their liaison, beyond marriage, produced a male child named JOSE PROTACIO RIZAL.
The article's summary based on "The hidden wealth of Marcos" (copied and pasted without editing and without inclusion of my personal opinion):
- Prince Julian McLeod Tallano (brother of Queen Victoria) is the father of the man later known as Jose Rizal.
- Jose Rizal is the father of two further important figures in world history, with those figures being the German Fuhrer Adolf Hitler, and the Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita.
- .The death of Rizal by firing squad is disclosed as a well orchestrated pantomine, equally as the Battle of Manila, and post that pseudo firing squad event, Jose Rizal became the Reverend Father Jose Antonio Diaz.
- As the son of Prince Julian McLeod Tallano, Rizal (now as Rev. Father.Jose Antonio Diaz), was entrusted wth the relocation and management of the massive wealth of the Tallano Clan, and perhaps the fused assets of his British relatives..
- Thus the movement of 600,000 metric tonnes of gold from the Vatican to Manila to facilitate establishment of the first Central Bank of the Philippines. (Recall that the Tallano Clan were the principal land-owners of the Philippines, as evidenced by the ORIGINAL land title OCT No. T-01-4).
- The Rev. Fr., Jose Antonio Diaz recognised the brilliance of Ferdinand Marcos, and appointed him as counsel to all activities of Diaz relative to storage, safe-keeping and employment of the wealth of his father’s Clan, that of the Clan Tallano.
- It is well known that Hitler had sent his treasure ships of looted gold and valuables to Egypt for safe storage, but when Field Marshall Montgomery defeated Field Marshall Irwin von Rommel in the North Africa campaign, he had no option other than to redirect those ships toward Japan, his last remaining ally.
- Fate again intervened, when the United States dropped atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, thus hastening the Japanese surrrender, and causing Hitler to redirect his treasure ships to the Philippines.
- With the end of World War II, and recognition that the Japanese under Prince Chichibu had stored massive looted wealth in the Philippines,Rizal, in his role as Rev. Fr. Jose Antonio Diaz, had little difficulty in identifying valuable burial sites, as he could elicit information directly from his son, General Tomoyuki Yamashita.
- Equally, he would have sound information from his first born son, Adolf Hitler, as to location of the Nazi loot. (Hitler did not commit suicide in the Berlin bunker as popularly accepted, but left Templehof Airport in Berlin via a 109 Messerschmitt, and flown to neutral Spain, where he came under protection of General Franco. Later, he returned to the Cebu of his
youth, and ended his life in the Philippines).
- Thus, the recovery from several sites which yielded massive quantities of gold bullion, precious stones and other valuables.
- The recovered valuables were of course under embargo due to the Statute of Limitations, but Marcos, with Presidential powers and authorities, was able to influence world banks and significant authorities to aid and abet him in ”placing” those assets so that the inherent value was preserved in favour of those agreed by Marcos and Diaz to be the ultimate beneficiaries.
- The ultimate beneficiary was kept concealed via use of a coded identification, TVM-LSM-666, and all critical documents referred to the beneficiary exclusively under that code-name.
- In terms of infrastructure, the beneficiary known by the Code TVM-LSM-666 is equally enthusiastic to share the vision of President Marcos and Rev. Fr. Diaz to assure that the Philippines becomes the most stable and progressive state in the Asian community.

Record High Fatal Boston Workplace Accidents
According to a recent news article from WCVB 5 News Boston, fatal Boston work accidents are at the highest levels they have been since 2000, and this is justifiably causing serious concern. This not only includes the City of Boston, but also fatal work accidents in the Greater Boston metro area, including cities such as Cambridge, Newton, Natick, and the north and south shores.
Number of Work-Related Deaths in Boston Metro Area at Near Record Highs
As discussed in this news article, 75 lives have been lost by workers in the Boston metropolitan area in 2016 alone. In actual numbers, this was an increase in 27 worker fatalities, but in terms of percentages, we are looking at an approximately 56 percent increase from the previous year. Our Boston workers’ compensation lawyers fight for the rights of injured workers and their families.  Each one of these cases is tragic. Each one of these numbers represents a real person with a real family whose lives will never be the same as a result of this tragic and untimely death while on the job in Boston. For this reason, the best thing a family member of a deceased worker can do is to make sure they hire an experienced Boston workers’ compensation attorney who not only knows the ins and outs of the workers’ compensation system, but also a wrongful death attorney who will look at all available means of recovery. You want an attorney who will take the time to explain what is going on and to listen to the needs and concerns of the family members while fighting for the highest possible financial compensation the law and the facts will allow.
Workers’ Compensation involving Fatal Boston Workplace Accident
In a fatal Boston workplace accident, or work-related illness, which results in a loss of life, damages are typically going to include any medical bills associated with the fatal injury or illness, reasonable funeral and burial expenses pursuant to Section 33 of Chapter 152 of Massachusetts General Laws (M.G.L.), and lost wages in the case of a worker with dependents who were relying on his or her wages prior to the worker’s death.  This is often paid in the form of a lump sum payment or as a long-term benefits award.  It is often possible to accept a one-time payment at a lower amount if the family is unable to wait for years to receive the greater amount of benefits in monthly payments. But this is something about which you should speak with an experienced Boston workplace injury lawyer because every case is different, depending on the needs and relationships of dependent family members.
The key here is these cases operate very differently than a personal injury action. In a fatal workers’ compensation case in Boston, only dependent children who are living at home in the custody of the deceased worker and a surviving spouse who was dependent on the deceased worker’s salary will be entitled to benefits in most cases. As a matter of law, adult children whether they are living at home or not will not typically be able to apply for workers’ compensation lost wages death benefits unless they suffer from a physical or mental disability and were living at home because they were unable to support themselves on their own.  This goes beyond just not having a job and living at home.  In the case of a surviving spouse, his or her income from other sources will be considered as part of the calculations as to whether he or she is considered a dependent of the deceased workers for the purpose of workers’ compensation death benefits in Massachusetts.
Boston Metro Area Worker Death Data Compared to Other Areas in U.S.
In the U.S., the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) recorded a total of 5,190 fatal on the job injuries in the nation in the same year we are looking at with respect to Boston fatal workplace accidents.  In the previous year, there were roughly 4,830 worker deaths so there was an overall increase nationally as well.  This is the highest federal numbers have been since 2008, illustrating a national problem as well as a local problem. On the other hand, in 2012, numbers in the Greater Boston area were at a near record low in recent years so the increase is seen as a relatively recent trend.
Both locally and nationally, construction accidents contributed the highest number of fatal workplace accidents, but this should come as no big surprise. The most common causes of worker deaths are falls, being hit by falling objects, being electrocuted, and being hit by large equipment, all of which are present on a regular basis on construction sites in Boston and elsewhere. These four causes are often referred to as the Fatal Four causes of worker deaths in the United States, and specifically in construction accidents.
Aside from construction accidents, the next largest type of workplace death involves exposure to toxic substances or harsh and toxic environments. This can include chemical spills and out gassing at various factories.
Fatal Work-Related Illness
One of the more common causes of work-related illness that can result in death is exposure to asbestos.  When these deadly fibers are inhaled, there is no way for the body to expel them. Over the course of 20 to 50 years, with 40 years being the national average, these fibers can cause the body to form deadly mesothelioma tumors. Since asbestos illness is often due to occupational exposure, it is best to speak with an attorney who handles both workers’ compensation cases and mesothelioma litigation if you or a family member has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestosis, or one of the other asbestos-related illnesses.

Robbers in Pakistan stole so much booze from a North Korea diplomat police think he might have been bootlegging
Robbers broke into a North Korean diplomats home and removed $150,000 in high quality liquor, wine, and beer. The huge volume of alcohol lead police to suspect the diplomat had been bootlegging. Pakistan forbids its Muslim majority from drinking alcohol, leaving an underserved minority of other religions that may be served by a black market. ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Neighbors say when three men kicked down the doors and burgled the home of a North Korean diplomat in Islamabad last month, it took them more than three hours to lug out their booty: thousands of bottles of Scotch whisky, beer and French wine.
The robbers came prepared. Police and witnesses said they brought three cars and a small truck to plunder Hyon Ki Yong's trove of alcoholic drinks, which is worth more than $150,000 on the black market in a country where it is illegal for Muslims to consume alcohol.
The police, who recovered much of the stash soon after the Oct. 3 burglary, say that the three robbers were police officers and have issued arrest warrants for them and for a member of a well-known bootlegging family. They have also arrested Hyon's housekeeper.
Senior police and customs officials say the discovery of such a large amount of liquor has led them to conclude that some North Korean diplomats are involved in selling alcohol either to make money for themselves or to provide funds for the cash-starved regime in Pyongyang.
The North Korean government is facing increasingly tough United Nations-backed economic sanctions because of its nuclear weapons and missile development programs.
"This North Korean was involved in liquor selling," said a senior police official in Islamabad who is familiar with the investigation, in reference to Hyon.
The officer said North Korean diplomats in Pakistan had been doing this for years, though he didn’t provide direct evidence of such sales.
Reuters could not independently verify that Hyon had been selling alcohol.
A diplomat from the North Korean embassy declined to comment on Hyon's case, or the wider allegations about alcohol sales.
"It has been discussed between the embassy and MOFA (Pakistan’s ministry of foreign affairs)," said the diplomat, who put the phone down before identifying himself. He did not respond to subsequent calls.
Reuters was unable to reach Hyon for comment.
The investigating police officer, Ishtiaq Hussain, said that the housekeeper, Boota Masih, had "confessed" to his role in the crime and had provided all the details.
Masih is in custody and he could not be reached for comment. Reuters couldn't determine if he has a lawyer.
One of the officers being sought by police, Malik Asif, told Reuters when contacted by phone that he denies being involved in the burglary. He said he is currently in hiding.
He said he had no doubt that North Koreans were involved in the alcohol smuggling business.
"They have been doing this business for a long time," he added.
Pressure from embassies
Reuters/Lai Seng Sin
Some foreign diplomats in Islamabad have long-held suspicions that North Korean diplomats in Pakistan are involved in bootlegging.
They say they believe Pakistan has turned a blind eye to bootlegging by North Koreans, perhaps out of courtesy to the historic ties between the two countries. Abdul Qadeer Khan, the Pakistani scientist lionized as the father of Pakistan’s atomic bomb, in 2004 said he had sold nuclear secrets to North Korea.
Pakistan denies being lax in policing such behavior by North Korean diplomats. “No such activity has ever been, or shall ever be tolerated,” foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad Faisal told Reuters.
When asked about this particular case, Faisal said: "Pakistan is actively investigating the case and any indiscretion, if proven, will be punished as per national and international laws.”
Pakistan has also always denied helping North Korea with its nuclear program.
This summer, the U.S. embassy in Islamabad along with South Korean and Japanese counterparts lodged a complaint with Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the size of the North Korean mission in Pakistan, because they wanted to reduce its ability to raise funds for Pyongyang by reselling imported alcohol, according to diplomatic sources in Islamabad and Seoul.
The Japanese and South Koreans had been making such requests for more than a year, according to a source in Seoul. A Japanese foreign ministry source has denied knowledge of the demarche.
The source in Seoul estimates North Korea has 12-14 diplomats in Pakistan, split between Islamabad and Karachi, prompting some diplomats to wonder why Pyongyang needs so many representatives when – according to Pakistan central bank data - its official trade with Pakistan has ceased since August 2016.
Washington has been tightening the diplomatic and economic noose around North Korea, seeking to cut its foreign sources of funding amid fears the world's most isolated regime is on the cusp of developing intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads to American shores.
The U.S. Embassy in Pakistan declined to comment.
Japan's foreign ministry declined to comment.
The South Korean foreign ministry said: "Our government is closely monitoring any movement concerning illegal activities of North Korea but we cannot officially confirm this case."
Pakistan's foreign ministry didn't respond to questions about the pressure it faced from other nations over the size of North Korea's mission.
"Angry and upset"
Wong Maye-E (Associated Press)
When Hyon discovered the robbery on Oct. 4 after returning to Islamabad from a trip to China,  the diplomat rushed to the nearby police station to report the crime.
"He was angry and upset," said Hussain, the police officer who interviewed Hyon in Islamabad's Kohsar police station. "And very worried."
Hyon told the police the robbers had fled with 1,200 bottles of Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky, 200 cases of wine, 60 cartons of beer, dozens of bottles of tequila, two diamonds and $3,000 in cash, according to a police document reviewed by Reuters. On the black market, the whisky alone is worth $80 per bottle, or a total $96,000.
Hyon and the North Korean embassy told police the alcohol was imported legally and presented documents to back up its case. Police declined to make the documents available.
A week after the robbery, North Korea's ambassador to Pakistan met the foreign ministry's chief of protocol and requested Hyon's missing items be returned, according to a Pakistani foreign ministry document seen by Reuters.
It is unclear whether Hyon, who would have diplomatic immunity, is himself under investigation.
Documents reviewed by Reuters showing four separate alcohol import orders by North Korea's embassy between March-December 2016 paint a picture of a mission importing alcoholic drinks that would be far above any reasonable personal needs of its diplomats.
During the nine-month period, the embassy imported 10,542 bottles of French Bordeaux wine through Truebell, a United Arab Emirates-based company. The four orders, billed by Truebell at $72,867, also included a total of 17,322 cans of Heineken and Carlsberg beer, as well as 646 bottles of champagne.
A person who answered the phone on Truebell's Sharjah, UAE number told Reuters that the company no longer has any dealing with North Korea, but did not elaborate, and would not answer any more questions.
Akhtar Soomro/ReutersAlcohol quotas
Alcohol is a sensitive issue in Pakistan.
Muslims, by law, are not allowed to consume alcohol but many among the Westernized elite drink.
Non-Muslims such as Christians, Hindus and Sikhs, accounting for about 3 percent of the population between them, are allowed to drink alcohol but obtaining high-quality imported liquor and wine is almost impossible through legal means.
This has spawned a lucrative black market. Alcohol is smuggled across borders and through sea ports, while several diplomats from poorer countries told Reuters they had been offered thousands of dollars by bootleggers to buy their quarterly "alcohol quotas.”
"I've been approached five times, usually at diplomatic receptions," said one non-Western diplomat.
Under Pakistan's rules, Hyon, who has the first secretary rank at the North Korean embassy, would every three months be allowed to import a consignment of alcohol. Under one of the allowed formulas that would mean 120 liters of various spirits, 18 liters of wine and 240 liters of beer – only a fraction of the amount he reported missing.
