The Umbrellas' self-titled 2021 debut album was a breakout moment in an otherwise grim year, winning critical praise and fueling tours with everyone from labelmates Papercuts to Fucked Up. Follow-up LP Fairweather Friend goes a step further – balancing the rambunctious sonic attack of their live shows with studio craft and finesse, allowing the San Francisco four-piece to become the band they’ve always aspired to be. It's a record overflowing with highlights. The addictive, upbeat melodies of introductory track ‘Three Cheers!’ are matched to an impactful percussive punch; ‘Say What You Mean’ finds The Umbrellas working with total confidence, letting the song ride out to its chiming conclusion, four voices working in precision. ‘When You Find Out’ offers rotating notes of guitar punctuated by a vocal that pushes past angst to accept a world full of hope. A lean 10 track affair, it grasps towards beatific pop while fuelled by a sense of risk-taking and the precision that comes from long months on the road. The Umbrellas coalesced in 2018 around a group of musicians with connections to the legendary San Francisco record emporium Amoeba Music. Singer and guitarist Matt Ferrera had previous links with bassist Nick Oka, as well as the powerhouse drummer Keith Frerichs. A chance encounter with Morgan Stanley singing karaoke at a Fourth of July party cemented the line-up around an avowed thirst for melody. “All of us love really earnest pop songs,” Nick points out. “I guess we got to a point in our lives where we wanted to be genuine.” Playing shows at San Francisco’s vital DIY redoubt Hit Gallery, The Umbrellas would share line-ups with local heroes such as April Magazine and Cindy. Recording their debut album across a two-day spell at Matt’s parents’ house, the results won a devoted cult following. The experience of frequent touring bonded them tightly and allowed the volume to tick up a little higher (and higher...) and and feeding a desire for their next record to more closely mirror the energy of their live shows. “I think we got tired of people saying, oh you’re so much louder than I thought you’d be!” laughs Matt. “Our early recordings are sweet and earnest… and we wanted it to be louder.” Kicking off sessions in November 2022, the band used an ad hoc space Matt created in his basement, which allowed the sessions to be a little more relaxed in terms of timescale than their debut. “We gave ourselves more space for this album,” says Keith. “We wanted time to sit on the songs, and really work on them.” Capturing their thrilling live dynamic on tape, The Umbrellas are at once more physical and yet also more controlled on their new album. Take opening track ‘Three Cheers!’ – the peppy, sun-soaked rush masks a barbed lyric, courtesy of Nick Oka. “It’s a pseudo-political song about power struggles that occur in a job situation, or a friend group. It’s an observational song.” ‘Toe The Line’ has an unkempt, rollicking sense of energy, the playful relationship analogy of the lyric pushed to the speed of light by Keith’s just-chaotic-enough punk drumming. ‘When You Find Out’ meanwhile epitomises their unified, egalitarian way of making music – with The Umbrellas, each voice counts. “It sounds different from any song we’ve ever written together,” says Morgan. “It shows how much we’ve grown. Trust helps us to build the songs. It’s definitely a team effort.” It's also a record of ambition. ‘Say What You Mean’ stretches past the four-minute mark, the viola performance informed by Estonian minimalist composer Arvo Pärt. ‘Gone’ was the first song attempted for the new album, and the last they actually finished, endless re-writes transforming it into a manifesto of control and release. Taken as a whole Fairweather Friend is a bold indiepop triumph, crafted with purpose and attention. Taking their time over each note, the four-piece have strengthened their songwriting, adding depth and assurance while unlocking their potential. Some bonds last a lifetime – The Umbrellas are ready to capture your heart. Read the full article

"Pumpkin Joe" Greenstein
"There's something about this particular vegetable. They are like humans. No two of them are alike. They make you smile." - Joe Greenstein speaking to the Halloween Committee, 1964
If you were a child in north Minneapolis from the 1940s to 1960s, odds are you knew "Pumpkin Joe." Every October, Joe Greenstein, a neighborhood grocer, gave away thousands of free pumpkins to children from elementary and nursery schools on the northside. Greenstein invited students to his store (327 Plymouth Ave. N) at a special day and time to receive their pumpkins and celebrate the Halloween season.
In 1961, Pumpkin Joe became Alderman Greenstein, when he was elected to the Minneapolis city council. Despite his new position, Greenstein continued his traditional pumpkin giveaway. In 1962 alone, Pumpkin Joe distributed roughly 14,000 pumpkins. As chairman of the Minneapolis Halloween Committee in 1964, Greenstein even suggested a free pumpkin day for children citywide. In news coverage and election materials, the alderman was often still referred to as "Pumpkin Joe."
Joe Greenstein's store was demolished for the construction of I-94 in the mid-1960s. He hosted his last pumpkin giveaway in 1965. Following in Greenstein's footsteps, the Northside Roaring Lions will be holding a Pumpkin Giveaway and celebration for the north Minneapolis community at Cub Foods (701 W. Broadway Ave.) on Saturday, October 23, 2021, 10 a.m - 3 p.m.

For the Get Messy Season of More. No More (inspired by @jennpaints ). Collage, Permapaque marker, Posca paint pen. # "In north Minneapolis, residents have banded together to protect the area from bad actors after several businesses along W. Broadway burned down the other night under mysterious circumstances... Eli Darris of the ACLU said the effort came about out of a need to take care of critical infrastructures while standing up for justice. 'At the end of us making sure that we're standing up against the senseless, reckless and inhumane taking of our brother's life, we still want to make sure that our grandmas, our aunties, our uncles, our nephews are gonna have banks to go to, grocery stores to go inside of and shop, and what we've noticed is a very well orchestrated, well coordinated intentional attack against black businesses and we made a determination that we will no longer allow these insidious rubes to come into our community,' he said.....Longfellow Market, now boarded with plywood, is one of the few remaining grocery stores [on East Lake Street] - after Target, Aldi, and Cub Foods fell - thanks to dozens of neighbors who guard the store each night." -Minneapolis Star Tribune, 2020-05-31. Every year since 2015, we at Twin Cities Geek have organized our Holiday Toy & Book Drive to support the families served by the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center and the individuals served by the Women’s Prison Book Project.
The Twin Cities geek community came together once again to make the holidays brighter for so many Twin Cities families. The 2019 Twin Cities Geek Holiday Toy & Book Drive drive collected 1,497 toys and gifts and 2,805 books, graphic novels, manga, and comics for a combined grand total of:
4,302 donations!
All of these items were supplemented by generous cash donations of $500 from Nelson Cosplay’s Holiday Market and $135 through community donations on Facebook for a total of $635!
This effort was made possible by a team of over 20 volunteers who made deliveries, sorted donations, and helped with content creation over a period of almost two months. This massive project would not be possible without geeks in our community going the extra mile.
Each and every one of you who volunteered, donated, or helped spread the word about this year’s Holiday Toy & Book Drive helped make a difference in someone’s life this holiday season. You all are amazing!
Donated books await new readers
Just one pile of donated toys
Alisha poses in front of donations while volunteering

Donations for Families in Need
The donated toys, gifts, and children’s and young-adult books were distributed to children and their families in the Summit-University neighborhood in St. Paul through Hallie Q. Brown Community Center. As in past years, we especially asked you to donate items that would make good gifts for teens, and you came through again, giving all manner of tabletop games, video games, graphic novels, collectibles, YA books, DVDs, and more. This is important, as toy-drive initiatives like Toys for Tots so often focus on gifts for younger children—tots—but we geeks are well aware how much it can mean as a teenager to receive a great gift that reflects our interests, and the income level of our family does not change that simple fact.
So, on behalf of all the young adults whose lives you have touched, Twin Cities Geek would like to extend another extra thank-you for being awesome!
Books for the Women’s Prison Book Project
Of the total donations, we also collected 483 paperback books to donate to the Women’s Prison Book Project in Minneapolis! We delivered these to Boneshaker Books, who will distribute them to women and gender-diverse people currently serving time in prison.
Donations delivered to the Women’s Prison Book Project.
Again, thank you to everyone who donated paperbacks. You have helped people you will probably never meet but for whom something as simple as a book can mean so much. And that is a feeling a lot of us geeks can relate to, regardless of our circumstances.
Special Thanks to Local Business and Organizations
Of course, the 2019 Twin Cities Geek Holiday Toy & Book Drive would not have been possible without the generous support of local geek-friendly businesses and organizations throughout the metro who agreed to host donation boxes for us. Many of them have been participating for multiple years, and we were so happy to have them back again—and we were also thrilled to have even more new locations joining us this year for the first time! Many stores also donated to the drive themselves in addition to hosting boxes.
This is a special thank-you to all of them, and we would like to encourage the community to check out these wonderful businesses and organizations throughout the year.

Arson, looting, and violence in Minneapolis-St. Paul: I call that a riot
Derek Chauvin, A Minneapolis police officer, killed George Floyd, an unarmed black man, on Memorial Day. Floyd was handcuffed and posed no harm to anyone. Nevertheless, Chauvin pressed his knee against Floyd's throat for about 8 minutes, causing Floyd's death. Yesterday, Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. Without a doubt, Chauvin will ultimately go to prison for killing George Floyd. George Floyd's death is tragic. What Officer Chauvin did is outrageous. But does Floyd's violent end justify three days of arson, looting, and mayhem? I don't think so. Over the past four nights, protesters in Minneapolis and St. Paul set fire to dozens of buildings, looted businesses, and burned down a police station and a post office. These violent events were riots, but the left-wing media want to call them something else. Ali Velshi, an MSNBC news correspondent, was at the scene of the chaos a couple of nights ago, and he reported that the crowd was "not generally speaking unruly." Yet Velshi was standing in front of a building engulfed in flames as he said that. Craig Melvin, a morning news host for NBC, tweeted that his station's reporting would not refer to unrestrained violence and arson as riots. "While the situation on the ground in Minneapolis is fluid, and there has been violence, it is most accurate at this time to describe what is happening there as 'protests'--not riots'." And a commentator speaking on a podcast posted by Slate also refused to call the demonstrations triggered by George Floyd's death by their right name--riots. "[W]e can't call these things riots, one podcast participant argued." They are rebellions." Adam Urin, writing for bringmethenews.com, compiled a list of buildings that were damaged or destroyed in Minneapolis-St. Paul over the past week. As of May 30, when Urin's inventory was updated, 213 buildings were damaged or destroyed by rioters. I reformatted this list and posted it below. Eight of these buildings were in the suburbs, 49 were in St. Paul, and 156 were in Minneapolis. Some of the buildings were corporately owned: two Wells Fargo Banks, for example, a Target store, and several chain-pharmacy stores. But many were small businesses run and owned by racial minorities. And these businesses employed hundreds of people. All right-thinking people abhor the death of George Floyd, but his violent end doesn't justify arson and looting. And it doesn't justify criminal assaults on police officers, several of whom were injured in last week's melees. It does nothing to reduce racial tensions for media commentators to call what happened last week in Minneapolis mere protests and demonstrations. These were riots, and to say otherwise is to engage in Orwellian deception. ________________________________________________________________________

Christina Castle, your new favorite pop star, drops 'American Hustle' and the rest of her Chapter 1 EP [405 Premiere]
Christina Castle might just be your new favorite pop star.
At just 22 years of age, Castle sounds wise beyond her years on her new EP, Chapter 1. Full of poignant reflection and intelligent storytelling, not to mention the sensational melodies and singing, the collection is a powerful statement for this ambitious pop star. Of particular note is 'American Hustle,' Castle's arena-ready dissection of the trappings of fame and the music industry.
"One week after arriving in Los Angeles from Sydney, 'American Hustle' came to me in a dream," says Castle. "It sums up everything I was feeling at the time. America has a hustle to it like no other place I have been. Anything can happen here..."
That sentiment is captured tremendously on the track. Castle's voice is just a thing of beauty. Full of emotion, power and grace, she lays out the story of 'American Hustle' with sincere gravitas. The song rises and falls at her command, offering some of the most powerful pop music this writer has heard in quite some time. And readers will be pleased to know that the rest of her EP is equally as compelling.
The release of Chapter 1 is just the beginning for Castle's big 2019. She has planned two more EPs and a full-length entitled The Story of Christina Castle. She'll also be embarking on tours throughout the U.S. and Europe. In other words, get used to hearing her name quite a bit.
Check out Christina Castle's 'American Hustle' up above and her other two singles, 'Penny Lane' and 'Hey Dad,' down below. Further down, North American readers can find her upcoming U.S. tour dates.
