Cyberchase Character Gallery (Artwork Submissions)
One of the areas that I have worked in as part of my efforts to archive the Cyberchase website was the "Character Gallery". This was a place to share drawings of the characters that had been submitted by fans. The entire gallery has been preserved via the FlashPoint Archive project.
Now, I cannot repost everything here. This gallery ran from 2003 through 2011. During that time, over 250 images were added. However, I want to share some of my favorites, with appropriate credit, of course. The works don't have titles applied by the site, however. For the record, I did not draw any of these.
Here is a picture of Icky the Cyberslug.
It was drawn by Sana, Age 10, from Streamwood
Here is a picture of The Hacker at his most terrifying.
It was drawn by Devon, Age 7, from Sparta.
Here is a group shot of the characters, with very different color schemes than we are used to. I don't want to go through everyone, but I kind of like the stylized Motherboard.
It was drawn by Christina, Age 14, from Hampton.
Here is an artist's impression of Hacker after he activates his Transformatron for the first time and becomes a god.
It was drawn by Devin, Age 9, from Cleveland
Unfortunately, the scan quality on this one isn't great. We have Slider, who is just impossibly ripped. We have Jackie and Inez crushing on him as usual. And we have Matt, who is not pleased with the situation. So, everyone is in-character.
This was drawn by WIlliam, Age 8, from New York City.
I don't know about you guys, but this is how I remember Matt.
This was drawn by Maggie, Age 5, out of Westport.
And here's a picture of Jackie. She may be going for a hug.
This was drawn by McKinley, Age 5, our of Haper Woods.
And here we have Inez holding a manila folder.
This was drawn by Adrian, Age 10, out of Greenbelt.
We finally get some representation for Dr. Marbles. We have the lightbulb, the glasses, and the mustache.
This was drawn by Brenna, Age 6, from Oswego.
And now we have Bianca from "Cyberchase for Real". I think this is the only representation from "Cyberchase for Real" that I saw in the gallery.
This was drawn by Samantha, Age 6, from Terrytown.
Here we have Matt and Inez married.
This was drawn by Sara, Age 14, out of Arnold.
"I like Inez because she save the puddle vile"
Whenever I look at this, I see Norma from Psychonauts 2.I know its not the case, since this was probably drawn 15 years before Psychonauts 2 came out.
This was drawn by Alexis, Age 10, out of the Bronx.
And here's Digit.
This was drawn by Alyssa, Age 11, out of Dracut.
And here we have Delete, the red nosed robot. This is oddly fitting for him.
This was drawn by Amber, Age 9, out of Wawaka.
And now we have Inez as some sort of angel.
This was drawn by Hannah, Age 7, out of Plainfield.
I think I'll finish off with this group shot of the children with Motherboard in the background.
This was drawn by Sara, Age 14, out of Arnold.
I'm glad that I was able to archive these so they won't be lost forever.

Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer in Romeo and Juliet (George Cukor, 1936)
Cast: Norma Shearer, Leslie Howard, John Barrymore, Edna May Oliver, Basil Rathbone, C. Aubrey Smith, Andy Devine, Conway Tearle, Ralph Forbes, Henry Kolker. Screenplay: Talbot Jennings, based on a play by William Shakespeare. Cinematography: William H. Daniels. Art direction: Cedric Gibbons, Frederic Hope, Oliver Messel, Edwin B. Willis. Film editing: Margaret Booth. Music: Herbert Stothart.
If Shakespeare's Juliet could be played, as it was in its first performances, by a boy, then why shouldn't she be played by 34-year-old Norma Shearer? Truth be told, I don't find Shearer's performance that bad: She lightens her voice effectively and her girlish manner never gets too coy. It also helps that William H. Daniels photographs her through filters that soften the signs of aging: She looks maybe five years younger than her actual age, if not the 20 years younger that the play's Juliet is supposed to be. I'm more bothered by the balding 43-year-old Leslie Howard as her Romeo, though he had the theatrical training that makes the verse sound convincing in his delivery. And then there's the 54-year-old John Barrymore as Mercutio, who could be Romeo's fey uncle but not his contemporary. In fact, Barrymore's over-the-top performance almost makes this version of the play a must-see -- we miss him more than we do most Mercutios after his death. Edna May Oliver's turn as Juliet's Nurse is enjoyable, if a bit of a surprise: She usually played eccentric spinsters like Aunt Betsy Trotwood in David Copperfield (George Cukor, 1935) or sour dowagers like Lady Catherine de Bourgh in Pride and Prejudice (Robert Z. Leonard, 1940). In the play, the Nurse rarely speaks without risqué double-entendres, but most of them have been cut in Talbot Jennings's adaptation, thus avoiding the ridiculous spectacle of Shakespeare being subjected to the Production Code censors. (Somehow the studio managed to slip in Mercutio's line, "the bawdy hand of the dial is now upon the prick of noon.") Some of the other pleasures of the film are camp ones, such as Agnes deMille's choreography for the ball, along with the costume designs by Oliver Messel and Adrian, which evoke early 20th-century illustrators like Walter Crane or Maxfield Parrish. No, this Romeo and Juliet won't do, except as a representation of how Shakespeare's play was seen at a particular time and place: a Hollywood film studio in the heyday of the star system. In that respect, it's invaluable.

Read the full article

Hey everyone! For those who missed it, you can listen back to the sessions where Motzie and Reg joined Storytelling Podcast Week alongside other AMAZING creators, including people from Welcome to Night Vale, Rusty Quill, The Bright Sessions, etc!
Motzie Dapul got to tell short story “Hunger: A Hi Nay Short Story” alongside the amazing Meg Bashwiner from Night Vale Presents, Jennifer Mace of Be The Serpent, and Lavinia Spalding of There She Goes! .
.YOU CAN LISTEN TO THE SHORT STORY SALON HERE.
Some highlights: Meg was fantastic and cool, Lavinia was vibrant and sweet, and Jennifer was super rad, and had the kind of voice that you’d want to listen to for days on end.
Motzie Dapul and Reg Geli got to chat with other amazing women in the podcast space, Devin Shepherd of Cryptids and Octavia Bray of LIFE WITH LEO and Atypical Artists.

.YOU CAN LISTEN TO AUDIO DRAMA-RAMA HERE.
Some highlights: Helen Gould being fashionably late because she was cosplaying Heisenberg RE8, Briggon Snow squeeing over Reg’s chat love, chatting about the personal origins of fantastical podcasts, talking about diversity in media, and we all got to extend because it was the last panel of the event!
Not heard here, because the audio was cut off, was when we kept going after the end of it and starting cussing and talking shit about certain TV shows.
We also released a super special never-before-heard episode of Hi Nay for this event, “Remind Me To Tell You Later: Tiktik”
.YOU CAN LISTEN TO REMIND ME TO TELL YOU LATER: TIKTIK HERE.
After the events of episode 3, Oras, Mari and Laura wind down the day with a drink, a smoke, and a story. Mari talks about her cousin Nia and Nia's fiance Nigel, and their experiences with various Filipino supernatural creatures, including the dreaded Tiktik - which sounds louder when it's farther away, but quieter when it's closeby.
Remind Me To Tell You Later is a Patreon and Ko-fi exclusive miniseries available only to subscribers, with the exception of this episode.
Content Warning: Illusion and deception, infants, pregnancy, implied violence, home invasion, drugs and alcohol

"Book of Queer" How to watch: Premiered on Discovery+
The most appropriate way to kick off Pride Month is with a celebration of LGBTQ+ history, honouring the heroes who likely never imagined there would be a month-long explosion of rainbow merchandise and corporate statements.
With the help of queer historians and experts, "The Book of Queer" aims to shed light on historical figures whose contributions have been overlooked, or their queer identities erased, by mainstream society. Narrated by queer icons and featuring an entirely LGBTQ+ ensemble cast, the five-episode series will include stories about Abraham Lincoln, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bayard Rustin, Josephine Baker, Harvey Milk, Sylvia Rivera, Marsha P. Johnson and more.As conservative lawmakers across the US attempt to ban educators from even acknowledging the existence of queer and trans people in classrooms, this series, infusing facts with comedy and musical fun, is a vital reminder that LGBTQ+ people have existed throughout history.
"Dead End: Paranormal Park" How to watch: Premieres June 16 on Netflix in the US
Fans of queer cartoons should make sure to clear their schedules for the arrival of "Dead End: Paranormal Park." The animated horror-comedy, based on creator Hamish Steele's graphic novel series "DeadEndia," follows trans teen Barney (voiced by Zach Barack) who gets a job at the local haunted theme park where an encounter with a demon gives his dog Pugsley (Alex Brightman) the ability to talk.
The coming-of-age story will see Barney, along with his pal Norma (Kody Kavitha), encounter zombies, ghosts and other supernatural beings while also navigating family, identity and even crushes.
The current political climate is especially hostile toward queer and trans youth, so an LGBTQ+-inclusive kids and family series in which a young trans protagonist (voiced by a trans actor) finds a space and friends that let him embrace his true self and laugh along the way cannot premiere soon enough.
"First Kill" How to watch: Premieres June 10 on Netflix
If you’re dying for a dose of delicious supernatural queer teen angst, look no further than "First Kill." Based on a short story by V.E. Schwab, the series puts a young lesbian twist on the classic forbidden romance between a vampire and a slayer.
Teenage vampire Juliette Fairmont (Sarah Catherine Hook) has hit vamp adolescence and is finally expected to kill and feed on actual humans. Although she has been pushing back against this rite of passage for as long as possible, Jules can't help but be drawn to her crush, Calliope Burns (Imani Lewis). Cal, a recent transfer student, has a secret of her own: She's the youngest daughter of a family of monster hunters.
Cal is eager to prove that she can take down a demon by herself, but she quickly discovers that killing Juliette is as impossible as denying her feelings for her. The series should appeal to anyone who thought "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" or "Twilight" would have been better if it were gay.
"Queer as Folk" How to watch: Premieres June 9 on Peacock
The men, the sex and the city are hotter than Hades in Peacock’s multicultural, New Orleans-set remake of the pioneering soap, this time without the same over-reliance on white, cis men to propel the narrative. (Whether you see its depiction of a mass murder reminiscent of the Pulse nightclub shooting as a strained device or an apt reflection of current affairs and LGBTQ history is another matter.)
Still, carving out new terrain by moving Babylon to Frenchmen Street, and queer Southerners — especially queer people of color — to the foreground, this "Queer as Folk" conjures its share of carnal pleasures. As Brodie's (Devin Way) move home upends the lives of his ex (Johnny Sibilly) and a talented young drag artist (Fin Argus), you can have your bourbon ginger and drink it too. As for the rest, painfully earnest and more than a little pained do not read, in this particular political moment, as terribly far off the mark.
More at the link.
