Color in The Nice House on the Lake

My last formal art education was Art 1 in high school so I'm sure other people have the language to make this point better than me. But even as a relative art novice I could tell the colors in The Nice House on the Lake were doing something really amazing. (Spoilers for all 12 issues below)

The best way I can put it is the more emotional weight a scene or panel has, the fewer colors it has.

Flashback scenes to college or high school tend to be fully colored. There's no overarching theme, and very contrasting colors can end up right next to one another (like Molly's red hair and blue shirt). This would look the most "normal", but because it's not the norm for the majority of the comic, it actually ended up feeling very sharp and distinct whenever this kind of scene came up.

The actual "norm" for the comic (regular day-to-day scenes at the house) tends to emphasize a handful of colors. Everything looks a bit more painted, and like there's a color wash or filter over it. There's still enough variance for there to be multiple colors (skin, clothes, hair) but there's an overarching theme. Everything is just a little bit purple-and-gold or a little pink or a little blue.

The more the intensity heightens (characters arguing, or solving the mystery of the house) the more that filter ramps up until everything is monochromatic. The apocalyptic scenes are all red, and the most variance you get is a lighter orange. The gun scene alternates between pure blue and pure pink. When Sarah confronts Walter the panels are only yellow. A lot of Walter and Norah scenes are either blue or outright pitch black.

I especially like how this is used for character emphasis. There's a scene in volume 2 where we get a birds-eye view of the party. The colors are in this radiant/halo shape- red on Ryan, fading to blue out toward the edges of the panel, where everyone else is, highlighting her isolation. There's a panel where Walter cries, and his tear is the same shade of the blue as the background, looking like a tear but also looking like his face is splitting, reminding the viewer of his (currently subdued) flesh-tornado visage. When Walter is with the others he gets the benefit of "normal" varied coloration. But as soon as the group wanders off or he's left alone, he becomes monochromatic blue.

And it's not just for scenes/pages it can be for just one panel. Walter arguing with Norah is all blues and greens until he snaps red for just one panel. The goofing-around-with-the-gun scene is primarily blue until the shot itself happens in red. And then the same happens later when the group makes their decision at the end and Ryan fires.

I'm sure this is not the only comic ever to do this it was just really clear to me and I found it very effective.

Les soleils jumeaux échangeaient leurs rayons verts et jaunes. Lorsqu’ils se croisaient, il en résultait une lumière bleue éblouissante qui pulsait dans l’air comme une déflagration lazurite.

Lazard se protégea les yeux à la seconde explosion. La première l’avait déjà aveuglée et il ne voulait risquer une seconde…

Explosion !

La pierre fondue par l’impact plasmide gicla vers le visage du spatioflix, son ubiarmure se rigidifia aussitôt, le prévenant des dégâts, et Lazard leva son arme !

« Arxklz ! Radashta ! »

Le rebelle, réplicant de troisième souche, était devant lui, à quelques dizaines de mètres ! Profitant des éruptions solaires croisées, il avait jaillit de sa cachette pour tirer sur Lazard ! Mais il avait omis la violence de l’éruption, qui lui brûlait maintenant les yeux et avait rendu son tir extrêmement imprécis !

« Rends-toi, Xllkrvs ! cria Lazard. Il y a encore moyen de s’arranger !

- Roudorak ! Lavrigarlsjh ! se moqua le réplicant en tirant au hasard vers le flix.

- C’est tout ce que je voulais entendre… » soupira Lazard en achevant d’une balle l’humanoïde.

Sous l’impact balistique, la cervelle bleutée du réplicant gicla dans les lumières primaires des soleils jumeaux, et son corps s’envola lentement, tel un pétale de fleur soufflé par le vent.

Lazard, double flix

« Comment ça, cinquante pour cent !? »

Prêt de la borne d’hyperquité, Lazard croisait les bras et tapait du pied. Accroché à ses hanches fines, le corps du réplicant était figé dans un champ de stase, et flottait à quelques mètres du sol comme un ballon morbide.

« Je te vois dans l’hypercam, Lazard, tu es redevenue une meuf, c’est ça ? lui parvint la voix robotique de l’assistant comptable.

- Oui ! Et alors ! répondit Lazard en levant les bras. Ca m’arrive tout le temps et…

- Tu connais les tarifs, Lazard : les femmes sont payés cinquante pour cent en moins que les hommes, c’est comme ça et pi c’est tout.

- C’est tout ?!

- Statistiquement vous avez cinquante pour cent de chance en plus de foirer la mission, alors c’est logique que…

- Logique ? Tu sais ce qui est logique, assistant comptable de merde ?

- Les chiffres ?

- Que je me barre de votre institution d’enculés ! »

Et Lazard rendit sa plaque, la jetant directement dans l’hypercycleur de la borne hyperquitée.

Lazard, nouvelle chômeuse

Lazard sifflait une limonade au seul bar de la petite planète.

« Alors, ma jolie, on vient s’envoyer quelques bulles pour oublier la froideur de l’espace ? l’alpaga le barman en lui lançant un clin d’œil.

- Oui, répondit Lazard en faisant la moue. Ça vous dérange pas de draguer quelqu’un alors que votre femme est juste là ? demanda-t’elle en désignant la tête féminine du galac bicéphale.

- Chut, répliqua-t’il moins fort. Bibiche dort, j’ai vraiment pas envie qu’elle se réveille ! Et puis, on voit passer si peu de monde par ici… Enfin bref, mauvaise journée ?

- On peut voir ça comme ça… dit Lazard en croisant les bottes. J’ai quitté mon boulot.

- Z’êtiez quoi ?

- Flix.

- Alors c’est une bonne journée !

- Fermez-là…

Lazard siffla sa limonade et eut soudain le hoquet. Aussitôt, elle changea de sexe.

- Ha, vous êtes une bisexo… remarqua le barman.

- Bien vu l’aveugle, répondit Lazard en changeant machinalement sa raie de côté.

- Ça explique beaucoup de chose…

- Et quoi donc, que vous allez me faire payer la limo’ deux fois moins chère maintenant que j’ai des burnes ?

- J’ai entendu dire que c’est l’hypergouvernement qui a décidé de créer votre espèce quand la Guerre des Sexes atteint son paroxysme et qu’il fallait des agents infiltrés, c’est vrai ?

- J’en sais rien, j’étais pas née… Et vous, quand l’un d’entre vous se détend, qui c’est qu’a pété ?

- Et bien techniquement…

- C’est pas bientôt fini ce bordel ! vociféra l’autre tête. J’essaie de dormir moi !

- Pardon bibiche…

- Madame…, répliqua Lazard en faisant son plus beau sourire.

- Oh, un client ! Par la queue de la comète, ça fait bien cinq clics que nous n’avions pas eu de visiteur ! Deux en plus ! dit-elle en jetant un coup d’oeil dehors, par-dessus l’épaule de Lazard.

- Deux, pas vraiment, répondit Lazard en haussant les épaules. Le type dans le champ de stase est mort. C’est un criminel que j’avais pris en chasse quand j’étais flix, y’a genre, deux clics… Là il est canné, je l’ai dégommé sur votre planète, entre deux explosions de soleil…

- Mort ? Pas vraiment... Enfin il se porte bien, pour un mort, dit la barman. Il est en train de s’enfuir là, sur ses petites racines…

- Hips ! Pet de trou noir ! » hurla Lazard en se relevant, changeant machinalement de côté à la raie de ses longs cheveux roses.

Lazard toujours dans la course

« Reviens ici, tas d’carbone !

- Tu m’attraperas jamais, sale flix ! »

Lazard se pencha au sol et releva par la tige la petite plante qui s’enfuyait à toutes racines.

« Lâche-moi ! Lâche-moi !

- Qu’est-ce-que t’es ? demanda Lazard en faisant la moue. Un genre de pâquerette ?

- Un pâqueroi, je te prie !

- Je croyais que t’étais un réplicant ?

- Perdue, idiote ! On t’apprend quoi dans vos ‘comme-y-sait-rien’, flic ! A bouffer des donux ?!

- Ex-flix ! Non, on nous apprend à coffrer les ordures. Et que même si la police ne veut plus de ta tête, tu peux encore valoir un paquet au marché vert…

- De quoi ? Attends, qu’est-ce-que tu dis ? Non, noooon ! »

Et Lazard plongea le pâqueroi dans son décolleté dont elle remonta aussitôt la fermeture éclair.

Lazard, nouvelle indépendante

« Norah ? On est bientôt arrivés ?

- Tout à fait, Lazard, encore quelques petits clics et nous quittons l’hypercouloir pour rejoindre les Bassins Avenins. » répondit la Conscience Superficielle de son vaisseau.

Aux commandes du Nautilu, Lazard avait son beau visage au menton viril éclairé par les lumières pulsantes et multicolores de l’hypercouloir. Quelques titans-vaisseaux, des clergés-mondes et des persobulles le dépassaient de toutes parts à cet instant bondé de la circulation.

« Hmmpff ! Hmmpff ! »

Quelque chose se tortilla contre sa poitrine. Il grogna et ouvrit sa combinaison. La tête du pâqueroi en jaillit.

« Kof kof kof ! Mais qu’est-ce-que c’est que ce bordel ? Y a cinq minutes on me colle entre les formes généreuses d’une belle poitrine, et voici maintenant que je me réveille entouré de muscles dégueulasses, suant et, chiure de galaxies, pleins de bon sang de poils !

- Viril, hein, pâqueroi ?

- T’es qui, toi, ragea le pâqueroi, sautant sur le tableau de bord du vaisseau et se retournant. Où est la belle pépé qui m’avait coincée ? Elle je l’aimais bien, toi, t’es qu’un bellâtre de picomarché ! Et tu m’emmènes où, d’ailleurs, flix ?

- Ex-flix, je t’ai dit tout à l’heure !

- Alors pourquoi tu me retiens contre mon gré ! C’est illégal ! Je vais appeler les flixs ! Non, attend…

- C’est pas parce que je suis plus flix que je compte pas me faire me payer ! Bellâtre de picomarché, hein ? Tu ne croyais pas si bien dire…

- Lazard, les interrompit Norah. Nous arrivons en vue de l’hyperpéage. Destination atteinte.

- Prochaine sortie, dit Lazard au pâqueroi dans un sourire cruel, le marché aux esclaves des Bassins Avenins ! »
