The Indian Music Industry and the Ongoing Trend of Remakes

In 2018 the Indian Music Industry got decent songs from films that weren’t song-driven, which shows that filmmakers still actively look for solid tunes in the era of the remix. Unsurprisingly, films with a strong romantic core like Laila Majnu and Manmarziyaan gained quiet popularity because of the songs which they incorporated in the movie. The multi-composer soundtrack for Jalebi had some lovely old-fashioned music which was again a trump card for the film.

A recent trend which can be observed in the Indian Bollywood Music Industry is Remakes. The past few years has seen a considerate number of remake versions of song starting from ‘Kyun Aage Picche Dolte Ho’ from movie Golmal to songs like ‘Ek Do Teen’, ‘Dilbar’, ‘Laila Mai Laila’, ‘Har Kisi Ko’ to name a few. Although, there has been a lot of debate in the music industry on how good or bad this trend is questioning upon the originality of art, most of the people who love to listen to music are responding quiet positively towards these remakes as through this they are getting a chance to relive the beauty and medley of Old Hindi Songs.

The top Bollywood remakes of 2018 which set the audience grooving on the floor were:

·       Aankh Marey: The original song featuring Arshad Warsi from his debut film Tere Mere Sapne was remade in film Simmba starring Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan. The track had electrifying performances from the stars and cameo appearances of Golmaal cast and Karan Johar.

·       Dilbar: While Sushmita Sen made people crazy with her dance moves from the original Dilbar song, Nora Fatehi featured in the remake and sizzled on screen. With scintillating dance moves and Arabic twists, Nora just aced her belly dancing skills in this song.

·       Ek Do Teen: Madhuri Dixit's Ek Do Teen from the film Tezaab, was remade in Baaghi 2 starring Tiger Shroff and Disha Patani. The song was picturised on Jacqueline Fernandez and was loved by the audience.

·       Zingaat: The original Marathi Hit number Zingaat by music composers Ajay-Atul from the film Sairat was remade in Hindi film remake Dhadak. The song which was picturised on Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor was loved for the peppy music and groovy tunes.

·       Sanu Ek Pal Chain Na Aave: The song is a recreated version of the classic Sanu Ek Pal Chain Na Aave originally sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Picturised on Ajay Devgn and Ileana D'Cruz from the movie Raid.

Other than these, the song which was the second most searched songs on google in 2017 was ‘Mere Rashke Qamar’.

Mere Rashke Qamar, originally a Ghazal-Qawwali  is a masterpiece of an Urdu poet ‘ Fana Buland Shehri’. This song is great gift to the Indian Bollywood Industry as it has brought fortunes not only to the artists who composed it but also to the films which got popularised riding on the success of this song.

For the very first time, this song was composed by a well-known composer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan under the genre of Ghazal and Qawaali in 1988. This song then got into the popular culture of concerts with the help of artists like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. As a result of which this song got popular not only in India but also in Pakistan and also got adopted as cover versions by many local artists.

Bollywood’s love for remaking old classics is growing. This has happened because old songs not only appeal to the older generations but also the new and upcoming generations. This could be a reason why Raske Qamar was remade twice; first by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan himself under the genre of Ghazal- Qawwali in 2013 and later by lyricist Manoj Muntashir and composer Tanishk Bagchi for Milan Luthria's 2017 Hindi film Baadshaho. The new version featured original version of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's voice with new version of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's voice. The song also has a female version to it sung by Tulsi Kumar.The remix version of 2013 and 2017 were leading the Asian Music Chart by BBC for 14 days. The song was also on the top list of online music platforms like iTunes, Saavn, Gaana and Bollywood Hungama. It was also ranked as top 5 trending music video in India by Youtube Rewind.

The above trends related to a particular song in the Indian Music Industry can be fairly attributed to the digital music streaming platforms which are helping listeners a smooth access to all genres and types of music which they want to listen to. As per the data given by ‘thenewsminute.com’ The revenues from music streaming grew at a rate of 37.26 per cent and revenues from digital music amount to over 91% of the Indian recorded music industry revenue. The factors that helped in achieving these aspirational figures is cheaper availability of data and increased smart phone penetration. The remakes which are now identified as a growing trend was present a decade before too but the only reason for it not getting aspired popularity was a limited consumption of digital music which has now got a spunk because of the various initiatives taken by the present government like Digital India and Bharat Net Programmes.

While the 2017 and 2018 figures present a flowery picture of the Indian Music Industry, the Industry is still impacted to a greater extent by the digital piracy and value gap and hence to attain the full potential of the industry it is necessary to curb piracy which can be done with the help of freemium services by online streaming platforms like Saavn.

Prassthanam: Title track Sanjay Dutt and Manisha Koirala's movie has been released

The title track of Farhad Samji's far-awaited film Prassthanam was lastly released. Dev Negi's song will certainly be a delight for those individuals who are the die – tough Bollywood fans of the 90s age.
