thinking about how the motto of paul mccartney and george harrison’s school was non nobis solum sed toti mundo nati which translates to ‘not for ourselves but for the whole world were we born’

Non nobis solum nati sumus*
- Cicero
We are not born for ourselves alone*
On International Women’s Day, Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales made her first visit to the Irish Guards since becoming their Royal Colonel in December last year. The Irish Guards are under the command of  Lieutenant Colonel James Aldridge who introduced the new royal regimental Colonel to the men and women of the Irish Guards in the snow swept fields of Salisbury Plain.
Despite sub-zero conditions and heavy snow on Salisbury Plain, the Irish Guards were chuffed to show their Royal Colonel some of their recent activities and operational duties across the world. These included counter poaching in East Africa to providing basic infantry training to Ukrainian recruits in the UK.

Sedulo, inquam, faciam.
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Hanc ergo intuens debet institutum illud quasi signum absolvere. Murenam te accusante defenderem. Sed utrum hortandus es nobis, Luci, inquit, an etiam tua sponte propensus es? Duo Reges: constructio interrete.
An hoc usque quaque, aliter in vita?
Idem adhuc;
Est autem etiam actio quaedam corporis, quae motus et status naturae congruentis tenet;
Primum divisit ineleganter;
Bork
At enim sequor utilitatem.
Teneo, inquit, finem illi videri nihil dolere.
Praeteritis, inquit, gaudeo.
Ergo in gubernando nihil, in officio plurimum interest, quo in genere peccetur.
Quis istud possit, inquit, negare?

Non solum pro nobis nati sumus… we are not born only for ourselves. A part of us belongs to others, to our nation. This wisdom is more than 2000 years old. Today she holds more truth than ever

For John's Birthday: some of my favorite John POV fics
Drop Chute (bookofapril). "The last stall on the end had an “out of service” sign on it: he darted in, locked the door, and sat down on the lid of the toilet. Thank god it was clean. He put his glasses in his pocket. Then he drew up his legs and rested his head on his knees, the cool embroidered satin of his trousers a balm on his forehead, safely hidden from sight." (1967, John vs. Robert F.)
I Think of Things We Did (J_Deandra_j). "He sucked Paul’s dumb, lovely fat lips, licked his teeth, tasted the drumbeat of Paul’s heart in the stubble threatening to erupt beneath his jaw, and his soul awoke like a sad bitch at the shudder of Paul’s skin under his tongue." (Obertauern)
at midnight (anonymous). "The first time John lets another man press against him, it feels like dying." (Long brilliant character study)
Sunday Driver (@boshemians). "Tara Browne is the kind of pretty boy who wouldn’t bat an eye at being called one. Proud of it, even, and not shy of an excuse to do just that—bat his eyes, or eyelashes really, at anyone. Men, women, dogs. It annoys John when Paul does it but it annoys him even more in Tara because of the money thing, the always having had it, so that he is not so much coy as simpering." (65/66, John v. Tara B.)
February in New Orleans (@eveepe). “Kiss it,” said May, from where she was tucked in beside Linda. “Go on, he likes that.”—“Do what she says, baby.” Linda leaned over to slide her hand into Paul’s hair and guide his head gently towards John. (John and May visit Paul and Linda in 1975)
deeper than oceans you run (@orphanbeat). "Rich kisses him slowly, purposefully, as he does them all. John thinks he probably likes Rich’s kisses the best, then realizes that they all must do." (Beatles OT4, Greek Island AU)
Our Version of Events (@javelinbk). "There are also some stories that have just tilted the world’s axis slightly, asking questions like if Brian hadn’t found them, would they still be famous? The answer, according to that writer, was no, which John felt gave Brian far too much credit and Paul’s bullheadedness too little." (John discovers fan fiction in 1971)
non nobis solum (downtothelastdrop). “I think it’s cute,” Helen says again. “The way he looks at you. He likes to push back, doesn’t he, but I bet when you get down to it he’d do anything you asked.” (John's fascination with Paul in school uniform)
Bermuda (@scurator). "Today he felt that life really might begin at forty, if a bloke could just admit certain predilections to himself." (1980 as it should have been)
The McCartney Issue (@pauls1967moustache). "It’s only because it’s Perfect Beatle Paul with a dildo up his ass that anyone cares at all." (John Lennon's purely artistic appreciation of Linda McCartney's Playboy spread of her husband)
dreaming of the past (@revollver). "Meanwhile, the real Paul, sweet boyish features and Beatle-cut grown a touch too long, can be seen on the coffee table, inspecting the cupcake wrappers on George’s plate. All John gets is a brief look: soft curve of a furred thigh as Paul darts behind the paper cups. Graceful calf and perfect, miniature foot. Tantalising glimpse of one arse cheek." (1969 John imagines Tiny Paul to distract himelf from the present–with delightful consequences)
ageless children, animal sweat (eyeball2eyeball): "Looks like Pete’s got his night lined up, eh?” He looks back to John and rests his chin on his palm and smiles, this small secretive thing, and John can’t help but be convinced that Paul knows what he’s thinking somehow — dangerous, that. “What about you?” (Hamburg)

Metaphysica Christiana
nonne Deus?
AGOSTINO Malum sane originem debet habere.

Pro Caelio 31
Tumblr media
Beverly Chichester Judge Hand Puppet, c. 1936
Horum duorum criminum video auctorem, video fontem, I see the accusor of the two charges of this man, I see the head, video certum nomen et caput. Auro opus fuit; I see a certain name and head. He needed gold; sumpsit a Clodia, sumpsit sine teste, habuit quamdiu voluit. he got it from Clodia, he got it without a witness, he had it for as long as he liked. Maximum video signum cuiusdam egregiae familiaritatis. I see great evidence for a certain remarkable intimacy. Necare eandem voluit; quaesivit venenum, sollicitavit servos, he wanted to kill that same woman; he sought poison, he gathered slaves, potionem paravit, locum constituit, clam attulit. Magnum he prepared the potion, he established the place, he brought it in secret. A great rursus odium video cum crudelissimo discidio exstitisse. rising hatred I see again since the cruelest seperation. Res est omnis in hac causa nobis, iudices, cum Clodia, It is all other things in this we care for, Judges, with Codia, muliere non solum nobili verum etiam nota; de qua ego a women not alone a noble, she is also truly known; from this i nihil dicam nisi depellendi criminis causa. will say nothing unless it is for dispelling the charges.

Non nobis solum nati sumus ortusque nostri partem patria vindicat, partem amici.
- Cicero, De Officiis (On Duties)
We are not born for ourselves alone; a part of us is claimed by our nation, another part by our friends.

BLACK & BLUE, FIND OUT WHO | Selectively accepting       ( @prettytm )
Tumblr media
’Free Time’ has never been a thing that Lou’s used constructively. If she’s not working, she tends to find herself in some sort of trouble, PARTICULARLY when there’s a battle inside her mind. It’s always just better to occupy herself with something.
When she found herself with the night off and a brain full of things she didn’t want to confront, the only logical thing to do was go drown herself in liquor until the thoughts left her or she passed out somewhere. Booze, though, brought out the worst in her and brought her back to times when she couldn’t control the numbness she felt and the only thing that helped was trouble. The more, the better. That’s how she ended up looking like that. Words just hadn’t been enough to get her to feel again…
Lou snorts into her mug of coffee, putting it down in front of her. “I’m going to have to get my money back… They said this concealer could cover anything.” She doesn’t manage even a glance in Billy’s way as she decides what she wants to say to him. He doesn’t know her that well, doesn’t know her self-destructive tendencies or how they manifest out of nowhere every now and again, especially when she finally settles into the idea that she might be safe from them. “It doesn’t really matter who did it, does it? A fella who hates to lose a conquest to a woman who’s out-charmed him doesn’t seem like much of an issue in the grand scheme of things.” If only that were the truth… If only the bruises had been from some idiot who didn’t like giving up his lady friend to another woman.
The truth of the matter was… Lou had an amazingly perfectly bad taste in men when she needed to.

Did Tumblrinilla and Catullus write anything about each other? I mean, we know they were sort of rivals for Clodia
WHEN will the excavations at the villa of the papyri uncover the lost iambic invective poetry of aemilia tumblrinilla. i know they’re out there
until then may i offer you the text of one of tumblrinilla’s surviving elegiac poems:
nos dulcis vero non ignoramus amoris:
lexisti leges quas ego quoque lego.
cupiditatem habeo me solum te modo nosse,
errabo numquam, proxima semper eris.
tu numquam lacrimes, numquamve valere iubebo,
nec umquam mendax voce tibi noceam.
nos notos, non ignotos iam - scisne quot annos?
corde volutas hoc, ferre pudet tamen hoc.
pectore neque nega quid nobis volveret imo:
ludo cognito, nunc Venus aleam habet!
