Noeline Hofmann - Purple Gas
When I was a “serious reviewer” about decade ago, one thing that always irked me from a lot of other creators was that they didn’t tend to talk about up and coming artists or bands. A few in particular only talked about the same few things over and over again, and they even said that newer artists didn’t get the same views or traction that talking about the same few bands over and over again did. Sure, I get that, but at the same time, all of your favorite bands started off as new and underground acts that no one heard of at one point. I always like talking about new stuff, because new stuff is always there, and you never know when you’ll find your next favorite band. I feel like it’s easier for newer artists to get exposure these days, especially through social media, and other artists talking about them and giving them a platform.
That’s kind of what happened with Noeline Hofmann and her debut album, Purple Gas, because before her debut project came out, the title track was a single released by Zach Bryan. Featuring her, of course, he released it as a single that appeared on his latest album from this past summer. Apparently, he really liked the song and wanted to cover it, but also have her on it, so it’s cool that she has a debut project out for people to hear. It’s no surprise that this project includes the version with Bryan, but it also has a solo version, and I can’t decide which one I like more.
No matter what, I still really like this record, as it’s a solid country record that doesn’t really do anything different or unique, but it has an organic sound that’s really effective. She has a great voice, and her lyrics are really well-written and feel lived in, versus being about the same few ideas and not adding anything to it. That was my biggest issue with Jelly Roll’s latest, but this record is the antithesis of that. It’s also a hell of a lot shorter, only 27 minutes instead of over an hour. There isn’t much to really dive into with this thing, but there are some great hooks on this album, such as the title track, but if you enjoy country music that’s on the more old school and folksier side, I think you’ll enjoy this.

Purple Gas
I’ve got plates for purple gas ‘Bout the only break I catch But I am not the kind of man To blame the dealer on a losing hand Have a lone star in my eye The darker the sky, the brighter it shines Pumpjack checks and baler twine A ton of grit or maybe it’s spite And if I weren’t a flatland boy, I’d say I have a hill A hill that I will die upon if the climb don’t get me killed If there were such…

I love country songs that make your heart hurt or give you whimsical nostalgia.
Bonus points if they do both.

Day 16: Tuesday January 16, 2024 - "Dubs Wings"
William was really well behaved and said it was because he loves this place - Bdubs for Dubs on a Tuesday night with Dad. Getting his french fries and celery and double-dippa. I tell him every time about how Daddy is a champion chicken wing eater and some day he will be too. We watched basketball and hockey and he made me proud saying he wanted them to put on baseball as we sit side by side appreciating this garbage time while Mama is at work.

Wyatt Flores Drops New EP 'Half Life' — A Milestone in Country Music's New Era
Country music's rising star Wyatt Flores has released his new EP, "Half Life," today through Island Records. You can stream or purchase it here. Check out “Running Out Of Time” above. Wyatt Flores has been garnering critical acclaim recently. He was the subject of an in-depth profile by journalist Josh Crutchmer in The New York Times, which highlighted Flores' unique ability to evoke deep emotional responses with his music. The article titled, “Wyatt Flores…Has a Superpower: Tapping Emotions,” notes that the 22-year-old singer-songwriter’s music profoundly impacts its listeners. The EP "Half Life" consists of eight tracks, including the previously released "Milwaukee" and "Wish I Could Stay." The latter song was featured by Rolling Stone in their "Songs You Need To Know" list, and Billboard has praised Flores' blend of slide guitars and piano paired with his natural, conversational singing style that seamlessly transitions from rock-infused urgency to classic country twang. This release marks a monumental year for Flores, identified by Rolling Stone as one of their 25 "Future of Music" artists. His achievements this year have significantly boosted his career trajectory. Moreover, Flores has been named Amazon’s Breakthrough Artist of the Year, featured in Spotify’s Hot Country Class of 2024 and CMT’s Listen Up roster, and made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry. To celebrate his new music, Flores is set to lead his "Here There & Gone" tour this summer. He will perform at notable venues including The Intersection in Grand Rapids, The Windjammer on Isle of Palms, Denver's Ogden Theatre, The Knitting Factory in Boise, Ace of Spades in Sacramento for two nights, and the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. Additionally, Flores will appear at several major festivals this year such as Stagecoach, Hangout, CMA Fest, Windy City Smokeout, and others. See below for the complete list of tour dates.
