It didn’t seem much but the way they landed stuck instead of washing away within seconds. “Loved,” he scoffed. “Past tense.” Everything had blown up in his face after the election defeat. It was still so fresh, knowing that he gave up everything for that only for it to be for nothing. “You’re still around but I don’t think its wanting to be around me or the other thing. Watching the trainwreck?”

When Ben's phone buzzed with a notification coming from the newest number he'd entered into it, he didn't have any expectation of what Vera might've sent him, though he was hoping it'd prove complimentary.

If it wasn't a token of appreciation, then the picture she'd sent him must've been an enticement instead.

She certainly looked comfortable in the bath, bubbles obscuring much of her body, save for her breasts cresting the surface of the bathwater. Ben could see a glass of wine in the background, half-full or half-empty depending on one's perspective, but what he didn't see was the location of Vera's free hand, hidden somewhere under the bubbles.

As an enticement, it worked wonders.

“Like a puppy?” his head tilts lightly, doing little to dissuade the idea that Caleb is, in fact, like a puppy. Before anything else can be said about it, he pushes the topic aside in favor of expressing gratitude. “Oh- Well, thank you... for letting me off like that. I owe you big, so if there's anything you need, you just let me know. Sound like a good deal?”

James wouldn't have been offended if she didn't trust him. Given the circumstances, it would've been completely understandable. She was going along with him for the moment. If she didn't want to, he wouldn't fight her. He was surprised when she said she was going to be sticking with him.

"Alright. We're in for a bit of a drive. Apartment in a small town about 30 minutes away, maybe a bit farther. Kind of a safehouse. You can stay there a few days. I'm guessing you ain't never done something like this before."

James could see her doing something on her phone, but he didn't put any thought into it. He focused on his driving.

"Yeah, this is probably not the best way to meet new people" he said in a deadpan tone. He wished he could say it was the first time he'd done something like this. "Nobody sent me. It's...a bit hard to explain. I found out they were coming after you." He wasn't quite sure how to explain to a woman he'd just met--in this manner, no less-- that he was actively trying to shut down some criminals and this was why he was helping her. Well, he did think she needed to be protected.

"You got somewhere you can lay low a few days, Vera? Not in town, it needs to be somewhere outside of town. I know someplace if you don't, if...you'd trust me."

"I don't know if I've done enough feeling to form an opinion." Despite his smirk and his snark, when he thought about it critically, it was clear that Ben was exclusively into older women, given that he was technically created less than ten years ago. He wasn't going to get into the semantics of it with Vera, however.

"If this is your way of subtly implying that you just caught me looking, though, then I guess I'd have to wonder how you feel about younger guys."

He couldn't pay the bartender fast enough, a generous tip included both in a show of generosity and out of hurried math. He had no reason to think he would blow it within the space of an elevator ride, but he was still moving as though the window could close at any moment.

"Well, if you're sleeping somewhere unfamiliar, then it would be the least I can do to walk you to your door and ensure you get there safely." He grinned playfully, stepping into place beside Vera to escort her to a more suitable locale for the topic at hand.

Vera's brow quirked, interest more piqued than before. He had a point there, about the stamina of a younger man. And she liked that.

"You don't stop until the job's done, huh?" A smirk and Vera reached for her wallet, pulling some bills out to toss on the bar to cover her tab. "How selfless of you. Very rare for the men of your age." His presumed age, anyway.

Once her bill was settled, she slipped from her seat, smoothed out her skirt, and glanced up toward the blonde. "You want to continue this conversation elsewhere? I have a room. Had to stay here because my apartment's being renovated." She grinned crookedly. "It's just up on the second floor."
