Join the bone marrow donor registry! It's easy, free, and could save a life!
NMDP, formerly the National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match, is a nonprofit that holds a registry of potential donors of healthy bone marrow and blood stem cells, matches donors to patients, and organizes and facilitates the donation.
Why is this important?
Every year thousands of people are diagnosed with blood cancers, and often the only hope is a donation of healthy bone marrow or blood stem cells. This requires a much closer match than a blood transfusion. 70% of patients will not have a match for donation in their family, and will need to find one on the registry. Depending on the patient's ethnic background they may have as little as a 29% chance of finding a donor who is a good enough match on the registry. The only way to improve these odds is for more people to sign up and increase the number of potential donors on the registry.
Tumblr media
How do I sign up?
Signing up is easy! If you are between 18 and 40 years old, you can visit their website and sign up. They will send you a cheek swab kit in the mail, you swab your cheeks, send it back, and that's it! You're now on the registry, and if they ever find you're a potential match for any patients, they'll contact you. If you need to travel for your donation, they'll cover any related expenses, meals, and your time off work.
Making this post because I completed a donation last year, and started volunteering with them in my area. So if any of you have any questions about the donation process or anything else, feel free to reply or DM me! If you're interested in helping in other ways, you can find information about donating money or volunteering your time on their website.

Hello everyone!
Very recently a good friend of mine, my dungeon master, has become very sick and will likely need a bone marrow transplant. Please join me in joining the NMDP's registry to donate either peripheral blood stem cells or bone marrow!
It's super easy to fill out an online form and they'll send you cheek swabs to mail back and test to see what genetic markers you have! Optimal donors are between the ages of 18-35. There is no cost to donate!
If you're not able to join the registry, please help me spread the word! Let's help someone have a second chance at life!
Thank you!!!!

I love being able to see what the process of donating stem cells looks like but this is also very triggering for me. My mom suffered from leukemia and it progressed to the point where her only hope was a stem cell transplant. My brother and I were tested to see which of us would be best suited to donate. They ended up choosing me because he was only a 5/10 match while I was a 6/10 match. I was ready to take By medicine, test, or procedure I had to do if it meant I could save my mother. Unfortunately, we never made it to the point in the process that is being shown in this video. She was just too sick to survive the transplant. I hope for this donor's sake that she is able to give the donee a fighting chance at survival. My heart breaks daily because I'll never know if there was anything that could have been done differently for a different outcome for my mother.

I know I mentioned a few months ago that I was contacted by Be the Match (NMDP) telling me I'd matched with someone who has a type of blood cancer. Well, I'm doing the donation at the end of this month! It's a blood stem cell donation (PBSC). I'll have to take some injections for a few days prior to the donation to make my body make more stem cells, and then I'll fly somewhere so they can take them out of my body. Not sure which city yet, but I should find out soon.
Idk if excited is the right word for how I feel, but it is a Thing that is happening in my otherwise routine existence, and also a good reason to stay hydrated for the next month.

I'm Back with a thought for these dark times. In 2018, on a whim, I tossed a cheek swab into the Be The Match bone marrow registry. I'm adopted and know nothing about my birth family, but I thought if they're out there and one of them needed help it would be nice to be able to be that person. After five years, a couple of days ago, my phone rang.
I am a possible match for a kid who's fighting leukemia. I just went in this morning for blood testing to confirm. If the match is confirmed, I'll be donating marrow within the next few months. I don't know anything about them yet, much less if we're related, but to be honest - I don't care. I am forty-three years old and I have no children. If I can give this kid a chance at life, that'll be something I can be proud of forever.
TW: TALKING ABOUT MEDICAL STUFF INCLUDING NEEDLES
----YOU WERE WARNED FRIENDS---- Donation isn't as scary as people think. Turns out there are two methods, and the one you're likely thinking about (with the big needle) isn't nearly as bad as the way people make it sound.
If the recipient is an adult or bigger kid, you can donate through IV. They give you a drug to make your bone twinkies make extra delicious filling, plug you into a machine on both arms kinda like dialysis, and they just filter out the extra stem cells through that machine and circulate your blood back into you. This is now the method used most commonly. It's outpatient and requires NO sedation. If the recipient is a little kid or there are other factors, the older method is still used. That's about a 90-minute procedure under general anaesthesia (yes, they'll knock me out), they slurp the extra marrow from your pelvis, and off you go. It's OUTPATIENT. There'll be a lifting restriction / light duty at work for like A WEEK.
That's IT. Easy peasy. The marrow registry covers all my costs and makes sure my job is protected while I get this done, and a kid gets to live.
The odds of finding a match are kinda like being hit by lightning, especially when the donor is a stranger. This kid, whoever she is, might be related to me - or she might not. Either way, it's free nibling. In sum, there are all kinds of reasons to become a donor or not. It's a very personal thing. But I encourage anyone and everyone to sign up if you're able, because you never know. There might be someone out there who could live a full life on the strength of your kindness.

i was helping out with a drive for NMDP (formerly be the match) trying to get people to sign up to potentially donate blood stem cells to save the lives of people with blood diseases and i kept saying "take 5 minutes to save the life of someone with leukemia" and then i asked what other diseases it can help and the leader said sickle cell and then i spent the next two hours thinking about how fucked up sickle cell is as a disease. anyways see if there's a drive in your area so you can save lives

Every time I get a message from the NMDP (what used to be Be the Match) I get excited I can do something and then it's like "hey tell people about us!" and it's like wow guys I already tell people about you a lot* so like is my marrow not good enough for you? >:[
*shockingly, I do it in a very not-awkward and rather natural-to-the-convo way

I got a call from the NMDP (aka Be The Match) today, and I'm a possible match for someone with a rare blood disease! So in a few months I might be traveling to donate stem cells.
Monday was an awful day, and today is like....okay, maybe there is hope after all. Maybe.
