Ahh the r31, perhaps the least famous of the r series skylines, was born in 1986. The r31 was actually the skyline to feature the rb engine. The r31 had its rb engine variant, as well as a turbo diesel rd variant. Australia also had an r31 produced with a rb30. This car isnt very interesting. The r31 came in a wagon, coupe, and sedan.
Although, Nissan decided to make a race verson. The r31 gts-r. The gts used the same rb20, just with a bigger turbo and a performance tune. The race variant had a larger intercooler and a steel exhaust manifold.
With the gts having over 430hp, it was used for group a racing. She was fast, but not the fastest. The ford sierra, which was the lead of the group, had a whole 110hp more than the gts. Although the r31 is rather boring, next week we will talk about the r32 (possibly my favorite of the skylines) so stay tuned!

Series 3 Aussie R31 Nissan Skyline with the original RB30E replaced by an RB25DET. Australian produced R31′s were only available in sedan and wagon form with live rear axles using Borg Warner diffs. LSD was standard on Silhouette and GTS sports models. No IRS option. Engine options were limited to RB30E 6 cylinder or you could buy an R31 Pintara with a CA20 4 cylinder and weaker driveline. The RB30E was shared with the Holden VL Commodore as a stop gap to suit emissions targets until the release of the all new VN Commodore. The Commodore was also available with an RB30ET with 150kW(RB30E was only 110). If the skyline had had that option they may have sold better.
**EDIT** I have been informed that this is actually a South African R31 Skyline. They also produced them for a number of years with the RB30E motor.

Everybody knows the R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R, and that’s pretty much the only R32 that gets any press outside of the most hard-core JDM fanboys. But the GT-R was only one model in a range. The R32 was a huge change from the previous R31 for the entire lineup, but it was still a range of middle-class coupes and sedans that varied from mild to wild. Today we talk about the “other” R32s, like this GTS-t 4-door. The Skyline originated in 1957 with the Prince Motor Company, which had merged into Nissan in 1966. It was always a medium sized car incorporating a sporty coupe at the top, with two GT-R generations from 1969-73. Sporty coupes continued, but most 70s/80s Skylines were family cars. Slightly sporty family cars, maybe, but the Skyline also had a long tradition of slow-and-steady diesels. In the 1970s and 1980s, the family Skylines were very good sellers for a big-ish car in Japan, but by the time of the R31 generation (1985-86), sales began to flag with buyers moving to slightly smaller cars on the value-model end. Nissan also had a plethora of mid-sizes on offer at the time, which meant the next Skyline could be more specialized. The R32 was to be more of a kind of BMW 5-series like car, though it still had modest value leaders at the bottom of the line (a 1.8L GXi and 2.0L GTE, for low road tax). It came only as a sedan or coupe (no more wagons), and it featured sleek new styling, loads of tech, new suspensions aimed at providing a sharper driving experience (not that the R31 was a slouch in this department) and HICAS 4-wheel steering. Aside from the CA18 1.8, the R32 engines were all RB-series sixes (2.0 or 2.6) some with turbos. There were two sister cars - the C33 Laurel and A31 Cefiro, both sold in different channels in Nissan’s network. The R32 was developed under engineer Naganori Ito, who also created fast non-GT-R versions such as the GTS-t Type-M (212hp, rwd) and GTS-4 (a 4WD GTS-t) that you could get in the slick looking sedan. The fastest sedan of all was the rare Autech GTS-4, another Ito creation. These versions were mostly JDM-only, so few people heard about them elsewhere (aside from Aus./NZ), and are only now being globally appreciated. https://www.instagram.com/p/CBD0PTcAXae/?igshid=v3wx028czat3

What vehicles over 25 years old [other than Nissan Skylines] would you consider importing to the U.S. if you actually are considering importing a car? via /r/cars
What vehicles over 25 years old [other than Nissan Skylines] would you consider importing to the U.S. if you actually are considering importing a car?
I'm not in the U.S, but if I was importing a 25-year-old car, it'd be any of these:
Opel Kadett GSi 16V Superboss
Image
The styling may look familiar as the Pontiac LeMans hatchback, but this one had a 2.0-liter/156hp 4-cylinder engine and was a road version for homologation of a rally car. Made by Delta Motor Corporation in South Africa, this is highly rare, but pretty good.
Nissan Cedric Brougham VIP Turbo 3.0 (1991-1993): Luxo sedan with a 3.0-liter/255hp 6-cylinder quad-cam turbo engine, Nissan's VG30DET engine, this is both sport and luxo at the same time. It looks square and very generic sedan-like but it's fairly well-equipped.
Ford Laser 1.8 TX3 4WD Coupe 3-door (1991-1994): Image.
In the U.S. and Canada this was the Escort, but it never got the 1.8-liter/157hp 4-cylinder turbo or 4WD.
Could qualify for substantially similar, but it's old enough for the 25-year rule.
Mazda Familia GT-X (1989): Based on the European Mazda 323 rally car, and with a 1.8-liter/210hp 4-cylinder turbo engine, it's externally identical to the U.S-spec 323 two-door hatchback. Pretty rare for a homologation car.
Alpina B6 3,5 (1986-1987, November 1987-December 1990): Based on the BMW 325i sedan but with a 2.5-liter/6-cylinder 251hp engine instead of the 325i's 2.5-liter/168hp 6-cylinder petrol. It's the E30 3-Series and looks pretty good in red or blue.
Nissan Skyline R31 2000 GTS-R (1985-1990): No, not the Skyline that most of us think of, but the R31. It's very Eighties and angular, but still looks good. The 2.0-liter/210hp 6-cylinder is good, but the Autech model, maybe even more powerful.
Nissan Skyline stationwagon (1985-1990): Image
This has a 3.0-liter/157hp 6-cylinder engine, but imagine doing an engine swap and making a performance wagon out of a luxo GXE model. I know there's the Nissan Stagea, but the old Skyline stationwagon was one of those "Russian doll"-era Nissan stationwagons that looked pretty similar [Bluebird stationwagon in Europe, Skyline stationwagon in Australia] - image of Nissan Bluebird Wagon just for comparison.
This isn't quite a "what's your dream car?" thread but a discussion on the classics you'd consider, and what you think are good 25 years or older classics.
Interested to see what everyone thinks.

When people talk about classic Nissan Skylines, it’s usually R32/33 GT-Rs that dominate the conversation; or possibly the 1968-72 C10 “Hakosuka” or 1972/73 “Kenmeri” GT-Rs. But Nissan built millions of Skylines over the years, and many of them don’t get much attention. The R30 Skyline went on sale in the late summer of 1981, but the most special R30 was the DR30 RS - launched that October. Skylines, always family cars first and sporty cars second, were a little more sedate during the emissions-and-oil crises era, but the new RS was aimed at performance buyers. - Most of the classic performance skylines are six-cylinder cars, but the DR30 Skyline RS/RS-X were fours. The original 1981 RS was powered by an engine informed by the OPEC experience - Nissan’s four-cylinder FJ20E - the first four-valve-per-cylinder production engine in Japan. 4V layouts weren’t new became common in the #1980s, but Nissan was on the vanguard in 1981. The 150-hp 1,990-cc FJ20E, in naturally aspirated form, delivered slightly more power than the Skyline 2000 GT Turbo’s ~140-hp L20ET Six. The RS was also lightened and stripped of some creature comforts. - In February, 1983, the FJ20ET was born - now with over 190hp - making the #Skyline RS/RS-X turbos seriously hot machines for the time. Because of the car’s increased performance and profile, Nissan decided a few months later to give the DR30 a visual update that would match the increased punch and further differentiate the car from the other Skylines which, again, included diesel six hatchbacks for families. More than 400,000 R30s were made of all types, but the RS Turbo was a halo car. The visual update consisted of revised front styling that moved the air intake down low - the clean front earned it the name #Tekkamen (“Iron Mask”). There were also side skirts and graphics. - In 1984, an intercooler was added, which pushed the RS Turbo C to 205 hp. Sedans and coupes were available, RS-Xs had higher equipment levels than RS or RS Turbo Cs. In 1986, the R30 (which shared much with the C31 laurel) was replaced by the R31. The FJ20ET’s high manufacturing cost meant it was retired, to be replaced by RB20-series sixes in the hotter R31s. It’s nearly 30 years since the world met #Infiniti and Lexus, both of which were created to give Nissan and Toyota luxury brands in the U.S. - where, they felt, customers might not spend premium $$ on a Nissan badge. In Japan, this was not the case, and it would be many years before Japan got these labels. Both brands attacked Mercedes with big sedans - the LS400 and the Q45. - To avoid having only one car in the showroom, Lexus also had the companion ES250 (based on the Camry), and Infiniti had the #M30 - a reworked JDM F31 #NissanLeopard. Both were stopgaps until other models arrived. As a personal/luxury car, then a segment in decline, the M30/Leopard was actually very good - a sharp handler with decent power that could eat up mileage in quiet comfort. It used Nissan’s DUET-SS sonar suspension, a forerunner of later electronically adjustable systems. It compared well with the Lincoln MKVII and might also have fared well against the departed BMW E24, but those were the car’s contemporaries when it was launched - in 1986. - The #Leopard name dated back to the 1980, offered as a four-door hardtop or a luxury coupe - but it’s successor was a coupe only; aimed squarely at Honda’s (Acura) Legend coupe and Toyota’s Soarer (the future Lexus SC). It was a close relative of the R31 Skyline, but it had its own styling and shared it’s VG30DE with the 300ZX (for #JDM tax purposes, smaller VG20s were also offered). 300ZX connection or no, the Leopard was meant as a Luxury GT, not a sports car, which fit Infiniti fairly well in theory. - By the time the Leopard became the M30, it was almost four years old and its styling was clearly rooted in the mid-80s (and rather similar to the then-new U12 Stanza). It was often overshadowed by the Q45 and undercut by the newer and $5,000 cheaper J30 Maxima (they shared the VG30E V6). An ASC-built convertible added much for 1991, but M30 sales were always slow. - M30s are rare now and preserve of a dedicated few - similarly in Japan the F31 Leopard has a strong cult following (and this car belongs to F31club leader @f31roger). This particular car has been updated with a few Leopard items (and some JDM F31s have made it stateside). https://www.instagram.com/oldmotors/p/BvMjSvVlwTV/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1at8bj0vaum65
