Just read Shounen Shoujo
aka Kids These Days (spoken with sane and tired elderly voice)
An unremarkable boy gets a rare disease that makes him unable to recognize anyone’s identity and also vomitting black ink. He finally has a chance to be special by getting the disease named after him, if he dies first from it. Turns out, a charming girl has contracted the same disease and is set to die before him. The boy is getting desperate to kill her so that he will be the one to get his name on the disease.
Yep, it is exactly as insane as I just said, if not more.
Story by the famous Nishio Ishin, author of Monogatari series. That was instant bait for me.
It has everything I love in Monogatari without the ecchi parts. The wordplays, the hidden meanings, the twist and turns, the underlying mystery.
I love narratives that know how to confuse hatred and love. Like choices of words and framing that at first glance feel like a love story but in reality those are of murderous hatred. This series understands exactly how to play that game.
The characters are superb. They are basically polar opposites: she is as radiant as a main character; him as bland as an NPC. The boy acts innocent and caring, then as soon as nobody sees him his face becomes deranged, full of convoluted plans to kill the girl. While the girl is everything a star should be. Quirky, genius, friendly, cheerful. She is all that and yet just as unholy as the boy is.
How these two bond with each other through fun games and murder attempts is the biggest selling point of this manga.
The ending had me like O H. Like a giant lightbulb switching on. The exact same feeling I got from the end of Zokuowarimonogatari.
It’s only 15 chapters or so, perfect for one sitting or two.
The artstyle is really cute, courtesy from Akatsuki Akira. But coupled with the disturbing situation, it becomes pretty uncanny.
Tl;dr Monogatari but with kids, less horny, more crazy.
