Just two years ago, under our present Central government, Parliament had reported record-breaking productivity. The first Parliament session after the 2019 elections comprised 281 hours in all, in which 36 important bills were discussed and passed.
These included the repealing of Article 370, the triple talaq bill, the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir and the Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill, among others. This was a new record for the maximum number of bills passed in one session in 67 years. There were several days when Parliament functioned right up to midnight or beyond.
With this session, the government had clearly tried setting a dynamic parliamentary agenda; it was committed to optimising parliamentary efficacy.
Opposition’s obsessive 'Khela Hobe' mindset
If two years later, Parliament has faced endless disruptions over the last three weeks leading to one of the most unproductive sessions, the blame squarely lies upon the Opposition’s ‘khela hobe’ mindset.
There is no doubt anymore about ‘khela hobe’ being a veiled messaging for violence and anarchy. While the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has presided over the worst crimes against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters in Bengal, it seems that the TMC MPs were clearly asked to extend the mindset inside Parliament.
Hence, when TMC MP Santanu Sen snatched away papers from IT Minister Ashwini Vaishaw even as he was making a statement on the Pegasus row, the attack was clearly premeditated.
In fact, exuding anarchy and snatching papers has been an old TMC habit; Derek O Brien having demonstrated it at least twice before inside Parliament, including once under the UPA government when the bill for the creation of Telangana state was introduced.
The Congress itself has been pursuing a milder form of 'khela hobe'; the most glaring example being the Congress MPs led by Rahul Gandhi flying paper planes inside Parliament in January 2019, when the then Defence Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, was speaking. Rahul Gandhi was himself seen winking during the Minister’s response on the Rafale debate.
Hence, disrupting Parliament this time has been a pre-decided 'khela hobe’ strategy.
Pegasus Enquiry
In the Indian context, the information available on Pegasus is flimsy and inadequate to initiate a formal investigation. Moreover, the MoS Defence, Ajay Bhatt, has explicitly stated in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha that the Ministry of Defence has had no transaction with NSO Technologies.
This should firmly put the onus on individuals who suspect snooping to come forth and file an FIR. This, in fact, was also advised by the Supreme Court to the petitioner who had approached the court with the plea for a court-monitored enquiry.
What is it that stops the likes of Rahul Gandhi or MK Venu to file an FIR with the cybercrime cell?
No equivalence with Arun Jaitley’s past statement
The Opposition is gleefully quoting Arun Jaitley, out of context, in order to justify their anarchy inside Parliament. This is what Arun Jaitley had said on 26 August, 2012: “There are occasions when an obstruction in Parliament brings greater benefits to the country… Our strategy does not permit us to allow the government to use Parliament (for debate) without being held accountable… we do not want to give the government an escape route through debate.”
It is worth reminding at this point that Arun Jaitley’s comment was in the context of three of the biggest scams that India has witnessed — the CWG scam, coal scam and the 2G scam, on which the then government was repeatedly stonewalling discussion. As against that, Pegasus, at least based upon the information available so far, is largely a vague speculation. To use this issue to thwart discussion on all relevant issues affecting the common man is extremely irresponsible.
Today, the brazen hypocrisy of the Opposition stands exposed: during the peak of the COVID-19 wave, they were gunning for an emergency session of Parliament. Now when they had the opportunity to raise relevant issues, they squandered it away, inflicting a loss of nearly Rs 150 crore on the government.
The Way Ahead
The government would want all bills to be passed after adequate discussion and inputs. This is a government on the move that can’t be held hostage to the Opposition’s destructive antics. Hence important bills like Justice Juvenile Bill, Inland Vessels Bills and The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill, 2021, among others, had to be passed, notwithstanding the opposition drama.
It is sad that these bills were deprived of qualitative inputs that would have potentially emerged had the Opposition been better behaved. Now the onus is upon the Opposition to behave well in the next session of Parliament and press for amendments, if any, in the bills already passed.

Chandramukhi is one of the pivotal characters in the 1917 Bengali novelDevdas by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Her character was inspired by the Hindumystical singer Meera, who devoted her life to Lord Krishna; similarly Chandramukhi devoted her life to Devdas.[1] Chandramukhi is portrayed as a hooker with a heart of gold in the novel and its film adaptations.[2] Chandramukhi means 'moon faced' or 'as beautiful as the moon' in Sanskrit.[3]
In the novel[edit]
Chandramukhi is a courtesan who lives in Calcutta also known as Kolkata. She is considered the most beautiful and richest prostitute in the area of Chitpur.[4] She is first introduced to Devdas by Chunnilal, who returns to Calcutta heartbroken after the marriage of Parvathi 'Paro'. Devdas, disgusted over Chandramukhi's profession insults her and leaves her kotha. Chandramukhi, impressed by Devdas's attitude, later falls in love with him after realizing his steadfast love for Paro. She leaves her profession for Devdas and convinces him to marry her; he, however, has to reluctantly reject her offer as he has devoted his life to Paro. In return, Chandramukhi does not force him to be with her but waits patiently for him. Subsequently, she also moves to Ashthajhari village, where she lives in a muddy house located at the bank of a river and helps the needy. After some struggle, she meets with Devdas again, who now accepts her love.
In the film[edit]
Chandrabati Devi as Chandramukhi and Pramathesh Barua as Devdas in the 1935 Bengali filmDevdas
In most of the film adaptations of Devdas, the story of Chandramukhi is similar to the novel. Ibm lotus notes mac. However, in most of the films her humanitarian work in helping the needy is not depicted. Unlike in the novel, a scene in which Chandramukhi and Parvathi meet was added in Bimal Roy's 1955 version when Paro, played by Suchitra Sen riding in a human rickshaw, comes across Chandramukhi, played by Vyjayanthimala, who just stares at Paro without a single word being exchanged between them.[5] The meeting scene of Paro and Chandramukhi in the 1955 version was still regarded as one of the memorable scene in Bollywood with the background music adding the impact to the scene.[6] In the 2002 version, the director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, extended the interaction between Paro and Chandramukhi, also showing them dancing together to the hit song 'Dola Re Dola'.[7]

Social impact[edit]
Chandramukhi is one of the first characters in an Indian novel to deal with prostitution.[9] She was often depicted as a prostitute with a heart of gold.[10] The character of Chandramukhi had paved the way for other portrayals of prostitutes in films like Sadhna, Pyaasa and Pakeezah.[11] Actresses such as Nargis, Suraiya and Bina Rai refused to enact the role of a prostitute in the 1955 film of Devdas, which later went to Vyjayanthimala.[12]
Tumblr media
Legacy[edit]
Chandramukhi was well-received in India by critics. In 2006, Rediff listed Chandramukhi in their list of 'Bollywood's Best Tawaif'.[13]Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India also ranked Chandramukhi at #5 in his list 'Tart with a heart', saying that 'The egotistical Paro may have given her boy friend the goby, but self-sacricficing Chandramukhi was willing to put everything on hold — her livelihood too — for her lover'.[14]

Awards[edit]
Riverbed nightmare pathfinder. There are many actresses who have portrayed Chandramukhi in film adaptations of Devdas. The first notable award was won by Vyjayanthimala in 1956 when she won the Filmfare Awards, known as Bollywood's Oscar,[15] in the Supporting Actress category. However, she was also the first person to decline the award, as she thought that her role was not a supporting one but was of equal importance and parallel to that of Parvathy in the 1955 version.[16] Other actresses who played Chandramukhi in Hindi versions of the novel have also won this award.[13]

Rishi Kapoor on reports of hospitalisation: ‘Had an infection, getting treated. Pollution got me I guess’ - bollywood
Tumblr media
Actor Rishi Kapoor on Sunday said he is suffering from an infection and is undergoing treatment for it. “I have had an infection which am getting treated. Nothing dramatic. Pollution got me I guess,” Kapoor told PTI.Multiple media reports claimed that the actor’s son, Ranbir Kapoor, rushed to Delhi from Mumbai along with girlfriend Alia Bhatt, to be with his father. Ranbir and Alia were spotted at the Mumbai airport on Saturday evening. None of them was seen at Ranbir’s cousin Armaan Jain’s mehendi function in Mumbai on Saturday. Armaan is engaged to Anissa Malhotra and the two are set to tie the knot soon. He is the son of Rishi’s sister Rima Jain and Manoj Jain.

Remembering #Indurani, Actress & Singer of 1930's & 40's on her 95th birth anniversary. Ishrat Jehan Imamuddin aka Indurani was born in a middle class family of Delhi, on the 22nd of June, 1922. Her mother Munawar Jehan was one of the first female students of the then newly opened Hakim Ajmal Khan school of Jamia Millia University of Delhi. After graduating from the school as a Lady Doctor and Hakim, she had worked in the princely states of Zanzira and Tonk. Her father Shaikh Imamuddin was the owner of a fleet of 17 horse carriages (Victorias and tongas) and one of his contracts was for transporting female students to the Mission Girls Urdu School in Delhi. Therefore, Ishrat and her sisters Afroz and Roshan got a good education in that school. They were 7 children in all. Ishrat was the third child. Naseem Bano (whose real name was also Roshan)–the actress and the mother of Saira Bano–also studied in the same school for a short period. Ishrat’s sister Roshan was adventurous and she corresponded with a film studio and sent her photo. They wrote back offering her a job of Rs.300 per month. When their father came to know this, he first admonished and bashed her. At that time, due to his gambling habit, he was in debts and financial difficulties, so he thought that his daughters could earn money for him as film stars. sarojiniWhen Ishrat was about 12-13 years old and was studying in Eighth Standard, her father brought her and her elder sister Roshan Jehan to Poona to find work in films. Talkie films had just started and film makers were on the look out for good looking boys and girls who could speak Urdu/Hindi fluently. The sisters got work in Dadasaheb Torne’s Saraswati Cinetone. They both were renamed as Indurani (Ishrat Jehan) and Sarojini (Roshan Jehan). In those days, most Muslim artistes took Hindu names for obvious reasons. While in Poona, the sisters were getting Rs 300/- per month as salary. Their father took three months’ advance payments and left for Delhi, leaving the sisters in the care of their Nani (maternal grandmother). In Poona, they became quite friendly with a co-actor Vasantrao Pehelwan (who later did villain’s roles in Master Bhagwan’s stunt films). They called him ‘uncle’ ji. In Poona, Indurani first worked in a Marathi film called Savitri in a minor uncredited role of a younger sister. Unfortunately the Marathi film of Dadasaheb Torne flopped and his studio closed down. The sisters decided to shift to Bombay to seek work prospects. Vasantrao Pehelwan got them a flat on rent in Dadar’s Hindu Colony in Bombay. While in Bombay, Indurani got work in films of Daryani Productions like Fida E Watan (1936), Pratima (1936), Bulldog (1937) and Insaaf (1937). While doing films Pratima and Insaaf, she fell in love with her handsome co-star Prem Adeeb. However, when it became clear that he could not muster enough courage to marry her in opposition to his family (he was a Hindu Kashmiri Pandit and she was a Muslim), she refused to continue relations. She was a very strong woman indeed. Soon the word spread around that two sisters were available for work. The sisters did not know much of anything in Bombay and could not go anywhere. So producers came to them. First was V. Shantaram who offered Indurani a job at Rs.300 per month. She insisted that her sister and “Uncleji” should also get work. Shantaram agreed for Sarojini but refused Vasantrao Pehelwan, so the job did not materialize. “Uncleji” went away soon after that. One day Sohrab Modi and Keki Modi came looking for them. Sohrab Modi offered them contracts for Rs. 450 per month and invited them to the studio. When they reached Minerva Movietone, they saw Leela Chitnis smoking with a long holder. Young Indurani was impressed and also tried to copy her; but Sohrab Modi, who treated her like his daughter, told her that it did not suit her and she gave up. One day Ramniklal Shah of Mohan Pictures and his friend Nanabhai Bhatt (father of Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt) came calling. By that time Nanabhai Bhatt had already got involved with his star Shirin Bano. Ramniklal offered them a salary of Rs. 500 per month. This was more than Minerva, so the offer was accepted but in the process Indurani lost her chance to work in a prestigious company like Minerva. Their old schoolmate Naseem Bano was at Minerva and came to prominence with the film Pukar (1939) made by Minerva. The sisters did not have anyone to advise them, so they lost their chances at Prabhat and Minerva. Thus from 1938 onwards, Ramniklal Shah took them under his wings. At the age of 17 in 1939 Indurani married Ramniklal Shah, secretly. Her elder sister Sarojini also married Nanubhai Vakil, the lead director of Mohan Pictures (Azra is their daughter). Indurani had six children. One of them died at birth. The shock was too much for her and after 1943, her career started slowing down. By 1949, her last film was released. In my opinion, Indurani was a “one of a kind” woman. In those days and for her age, she showed exemplary planning, foresight and had the right priorities for her future. Being from an educated family, she knew and understood the importance of education. She ensured that all her children got the best possible education to enable them to lead comfortable lives. Her children went to the prestigious missionary school in Santa Cruz, The Sacred Boys’ High School. Saira Bano’s brother Sultan, Shashadhar Mukherjee’s sons Rono, Joy, Debu and Shomu Mukherjee, as well as Milan Roy Choudhary (Geeta Dutt’s younger brother) also studied in the same school. All her children settled successfully in the United States. She understood the three basics of life: food, shelter and clothing. She did work in double shifts and saved enough money to build her own bungalow in Santa Cruz (a western suburb of Bombay) in 1940–at the age of about 18 years! In a front page story, The Times of India called her the youngest house owner in Bombay in those days. The house was designed by the famous architect Noorani. She also saved enough to spend her twilight years happily. She spent her last 35 years in the US, enjoying life with her entire family. This, when we have hundreds of stories of artistes who died in penury and neglect! Salim ji has many stories, anecdotes and interesting tidbits from the Bombay film world of those days. Indurani’s brother Naseem Siddiqui was a producer and a director of films made by Mohan Pictures. His friend Hasan Sehrai was a dialogue writer and editor of a film magazine called “Kahkashan”. Lyricist Shevan Rizvi was also his friend. Naseem Siddiqi’s younger sister Shirin got married to Hasan Sehrai. Indurani’s sister Sarojini (Roshan Jehan) worked in films at the same time. She worked in about 17 films according to the Hindi Film Geet Kosh (HFGK) and sang a few songs. Sarojini and Indurani worked together in three films, namely Jadui Kangan (1940), Hatimtai Ki Beti (1940) and Tajmahal (1941). Indurani acted in 21 (including 1 Marathi) films according to HFGK and as researched by both Salim ji and Harish ji. Her Filmography is given at the end; please note that she was credited variously as Indu, Indurani and also as Indubala. There was another Indubala also, but she worked in films made in Calcutta and by Calcutta producers. Those films are excluded from this list, based on Salim ji’s information. Indurani worked with several well known heroes of her times, like Prem Adeeb, Jayant, Jeevan, Yaqub, Mubarak, Sushil Kumar, Yusuf Efendi, Nazir, Navin Yagnik, Yashwant Dave etc. She had good directors for her films, like G.R. Sethi, Ram Daryani, Dwarka Khosla, J.P. Advani, K. Amarnath, Mohan Sinha, and Nanubhai Vakil. She had training in classical music while she worked in Daryani productions and with this background, she sang two songs each in three films. She sang four songs under the baton of Anil Biswas and two under Madholal Master. Both Ramniklal Shah and Indurani were very generous and helpful in nature. When child artist Meena Kumari was in financial distress and her father approached Ramnikbhai, without thinking he gave Rs. 5000 and never asked for its return. Meena Kumari never forgot this kind gesture and always respected Ramnikbhai. inger-actress Nirmala Devi was Indurani’s friend and her husband (actor Govinda’s father) Arun Ahuja was her “Rakhi Brother”. When the Ahuja family lost everything, it was Indurani who paid for their monthly expenses for two months. Later the Ahujas sold their house in Juhu and shifted to Virar, but they paid back all the money to Indurani. Exactly opposite was was the case of director-producer-actor Nazir and his wife, actress Swarnalata (a Siyal Jat Sikh from Rawalpindi). They visited Indurani in their Rolls Royce, borrowed some money from her and then, within few days, quietly migrated to Pakistan, without repaying the amount. In the early 1960s, Salim ji and other siblings one by one left for America for studies, and then all settled in the US. Ramnikbhai Shah died in 1973. Later Indurani also shifted to the US and stayed with her sons by turns. She spent her time happily with twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Indurani died in the US on February 17, 2012 at the ripe age of 90 years, after a fruitful and contented life. Her grave is in the Ventura County, California town of Camarillo. Can 100 top universities expand e-learning opportunities for 3.7 crore students - Times of India

Can 100 top universities expand e-learning opportunities for 3.7 crore students - Times of India
With Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s push for promotion of digital-education in India, 100 top universities can now impart online courses by May 30. The announcement is part of the ‘PM eVIDYA’ programme for multi-mode access to e-education under which the top 100 universities would be permitted to start online courses.
“The recent move will provide greater autonomy to the country’s premier institutions and ensure access, equity and quality education,” says Ravikesh Mishra, chairperson, Special Centre for E-learning, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) that is in the process of developing online degree courses in classical disciplines such as Vedic Mathematics, Persian Language and Culture, Arabic and Pali along with foreign language courses in Russian, Indonesian, Korean and Japanese.
“In a post-covid world, online courses will co-exist with offline courses and offer students a dual option,” Mishra adds.
On the announcement’s long term impact, H Vinod Bhatt, vice chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) says, “If we want to grow in terms of gross enrolment ratio (GER), the answer lies in online education. Hence, it is a matter of time before internet connectivity and speed improves for more students to leverage its benefits.”
MAHE is all set to start online MBA classes from July, “We have put a robust system in place for effective curriculum delivery and quality content. Once the processes are stable, we plan to diversify with more course offerings in pharmacy, allied health and humanities subjects,” Bhatt says.
“The online degree courses maybe developed on the basis of four quadrants: e-tutorials comprising video, audio, animations and virtual labs; e-content where the emphasis will be on online resource materials that can be easily downloaded; discussion forum involving teacher-student interaction and doubt clarification; and assessment via online or proctored mode,” Mishra says.
In order to ensure wider reach in the remote interiors, the institutions are more likely to use SWAYAM PRABHA channels to make education more inclusive.
Since time is short, the universities need not seek any fresh approval from the education regulators and can automatically offer the courses online.
“The recent announcement is perhaps based on the earlier UGC regulation in 2018. Under the norms, the universities had to be in the top 100 in the NIRF rankings consistently for three years and have a NAAC score of 3.26 out of 4 to impart online education. Of the top 100, only 27 universities had fulfilled the NAAC score criteria, and even then around 24 universities had gone ahead with the process of applying for approval. The universities were subjected to a thorough check of their learning management system and teaching content,” says Atul Chauhan, chancellor, Amity University which along with six other varsities fulfilled the UGC criteria.
“In the current scenario, however, the top 100 universities may perhaps be permitted to conduct the online degree courses without the rigorous checks and start the courses from September as per the new academic session,” Chauhan says.
