If you haven’t seen the other posts and aren’t aware what Subterranean AU is, again see the post before this one. Easy explanation, it’s a magical boy au with the ninjas as magical boys. In the AU the boys are all tied together to Lloyd in ribbons of fate. The AU takes place in an original setting I made for a group of ocs that I out the ninjas in.

Lloyd is only 10, his father went missing years ago and his mother disappeared soon after, leaving Lloyd alone. He became a bit of a street rat, he searched for his father every day, until he started feeling drawn to this one library. There’s where he meets the librarians assistant, Kai. He doesn’t know why he feels so attracted to this stranger, but he ends up coming to the library every day. Feeling pulled towards Kai. At first thinking it was the safe aura he gave, he soon found out it was much more. Lloyd was used to anti-magic propaganda, Lloyd had no real opinion on magic. As he started hanging out with Kai, three others ended up joining their little group. Each being very different, Lloyd had never really had friends, so it was nice being surrounded by them. It wasn’t until he found out he was magic, he will never forget their horrified expressions… it got even worse when their magic (which,, he didn’t even know they were magic!!) reacted to his, feeling stronger and glowing brighter, it was then they realized they had been fated to each other. Their fate ribbons joint together in a bow at Lloyd’s fingertips. Of course, at first none of them liked it. Even Zane, who Lloyd found out was the infamous Falcon, none of them wanted this. Mainly because they loved Lloyd, and him being magic meant he was in danger. It was that fact that pushed them into changing that. Even though Lloyds magic was still to underdeveloped for him to transform and use it properly, and he is terrified of the future, he loves the family it gave him along the way.

At this point in the plot, he doesn't have a magical transformation because his magic is too new, and he doesn't have enough to do a full body transformation. When your magic is weaker, only a few things change from form to form. The outfit itself is based on you, it is personal. It's based off your feelings and what you want it to look like, though his future outfit is based off a Chinese dragon. His magic gem is on his navel, as well as his fate bow. The green on his cheeks is supposed to look like dragon scales.

Little trivia for him

He's kinda homeless not gonna lie. He sleeps around, and used to live in a boarding school but he ran away to find his dad.

He's 10 years old

He doesn't go to school, but sometimes one of the guys, or Nya will teach him stuff. Especially because he usually stays at Kai's library, he learns often. Mainly from Zane or Nya though.

None of them ty understand his powers yet because they're so newly developed that he can't use any spells or anything. His magic has a lot to do with destiny, his team has the strongest destiny pull all thanks to Lloyd, once Lloyd's magic developed it was an immediate, the four others were instantly pulled to him or vise versa, no matter if they tried to fight it. Lloyds magic strengthens theirs, even someone as inexperienced as Jay.

He tries to help Kai when he’s at the library, but he doesn’t get payed or anything. He’s too young to work so he can’t get hired anyways. When he’s old enough he really wants to help Kai at the library.

When he first met Kai, it was before his magic fully developed, he was pulled to the library and decided to stick around. At first, him and Kai didn’t get along at all! Kai felt like he was babysitting cause Lloyd never went away and Lloyd kept coming ‘cause he kept getting pulled there. Soon the others started to show, when Lloyd’s magic finally surfaced.

He wants to help the others fight Ananthemas and join the revolution but the others won’t allow him to as he’s too young and inexperienced. Lloyd wants to help but is always told to stay back as they fight, with the more frequent attacks and Lloyd still looking for his father, Lloyd starts feeling pretty overwhelmed. Uh and plot happens

If you have any other questions or some things weren’t clear, you can ask, so far that’s all the important characters of the au, I might make something for Nya so if I do, I’d y’all have any questions for her you can ask lmao. She’s not magic tho. I’m still debating if Garmadon is going to appear in the story, we’ll see.

Here’s Zane!

In the AU the boys are all tied together to Lloyd in ribbons of fate. The AU takes place in an original setting I made for a group of ocs that I out the ninjas in.

Zane is proud of his magic, he’s the most experienced with it and has been using it the longest, like his show counterpart he believes in saving people who cannot save themselves. Being kind and protecting those who need it. While he is not a robot in this au, he still holds those values close to his heart and doesn’t shy away from them. He uses his magic to save people, even when people don’t want his help because he’s magic. He’s constantly on the run due to the government not liking him for being so expressive with his magic. While in civilian form, he’s a model student. Perfectly in uniform, straight shoulders, quiet, respectful you name it. When he’s transformed, using his magic to help people? It’s when he’s the happiest. he’s not reckless, he’s very careful, and thoughtful in his outward use of magic. Never being caught, other than Lloyd fating them together, Zane is the one who really gets the others on board, they all look up to him. While helping people was always his motivation, Lloyd became one as well. Lloyd became his new purpose.

His magical boy design originally was supposed to be visually based off his more robotic falcon from like, I don’t remember which season specifically it’s from but when his falcon looks more metallic and more obviously robotic. Originally he was going to look more robotic, ‘cause in the AU he’s actually human, but that was quickly lost and he ended up looking more royal and regal? I think it looks nice, he might also go through a bit of a redesign but I’m not sure yet. I love the design, but I don’t think it reads well enough? I’m not sure yet. His fate bow is around his neck, tying in the back and the fallout from the bow looks like falcon wings. Or is supposed to look like falcon wings, I hope,, his gloves and boots have claws on them and his boots are supposed to look like snow boots. The blue in his face is supposed to resemble the metal plates from his titanium form. His magic gem is over his heart, to mimic and pay homage to his power source from the show.

Little Trivia for him,

He lives alone in a fairly nice apartment complex down down. He doesn't have any pets, but he does feed this bird that comes to his window sometimes.

Again, he’s somewhere between age 16-18 depending on how old you think the ninjas are, I’m indifferent

He also goes to the same public highschool, he is the oldest in the group.

His powers are still ice related, but much stronger than the show (think the way Katara used ice or todoroki) his weapon is a bow. I know in the classic his weapon is shurikens but in later seasons he's show to use a bow and that's just more interesting to me. I imagine the bow words like opal from Steven universe or Madoka from Madoka Magica. Where it's not exactly a physical object, but more on the magical side.

He has multiple jobs, but he's seen most often as a waiter at a diner near his apartment. He's also a vigilante, but he doesn't make money from that.

He has seen the others around campus a few times but usually kept to himself. He's often called 'robotic' or 'heartless' because he sometimes is more literal and doesn't show emotion as often as people are used too. (I personally like autistic headcanon for human Zane,, probably cause I'm autistic and love him) but he really met the others when he ran into Kai at the Library and met Lloyd.

He's been using his magic for the longest, so he's easily the strongest member on the team at the beginning. He uses his powers to help civilians, other magixs and he tries to defeat as many Ananthemas before they can hurt either. He's not very well liked by their government though.

here’s Subterranean Kai, he’s first!

Kai uses his magic every once in a while, using their magic in public is dangerous and Kai knows that. He usually goes in the tunnels and speaks to other magics, having fun and being a bit reckless. While on the surface he’d never use his magic and actively used to ignore Ananthemas, once underground he liked to mess around with it. Letting his anger out with it, he fights to keep Nya safe, Nya who isn’t magic, which Kai thinks is a blessing, he’s always worried she’ll be the next victim of an Ananthema or she’ll be hurt by a selfish Magic, so he takes it upon himself to fight for her. He had only ever fought for himself and Nya. It wasn’t until he met Lloyd did he realize that he didn’t have to be alone, he didn’t have to fight mindlessly and anxiously for one person. He realized Lloyd became just as important, and it was heartbreaking to find out Lloyd was cursed with magic as well. When he found out he was fated with Lloyd, and there was nothing he could do to change it. He found a new purpose it life, of course he would still fight for Nya, but now he also had to fight for Lloyd. He was the most reluctant to join the team, he did so because of his love for Lloyd. He eventually finds happiness with the others as well.

His Magical boy outfit is visually based off a ninja cause I thought it fit him, this is not the case for the others so don’t be surprised if they don’t have a ninja theme, only he does. At first I based him off his Prime Empire design, with blonde hair but I thought the white hair suited the design better- his magic gem is located on his hand and his fate ribbon, the ribbon that ties the ninjas together, is wrapped around his waist. Not to be confused with the tiny ribbons on his wrists, his fate specific bow is around his waist.

Little Trivia I have thought up:

He and Nya live alone in an apartment in a lower class part of the city

He’s at least somewhere between 16-18 depending on how old you think the ninjas are, I’m indifferent

He goes to a city wide public school, but the school does have uniforms cause their city is wack.

His power isn’t just fire. It’s heat control, he can control heat similar to fire bending from atla. As long as he has body heat, or heat around him, he can control it. He can even suck the heat OUT of things with enough control. He usually fights with fire powered punches and kicks, not just shooting fire as he does in the show.

He works at a public library as an assistant for cash since their world doesn’t really need blacksmiths. His parents own a welding shop instead

He got his scar when he was little, a piece of metal flew at his face and cut his eye, he can still see out of the eye, it’s just a teeny bit fuzzy.

Cole is very big in his disdain for magic. He doesn’t like other magics and he hates his own magic. For plot reasons, he almost never uses his magic unless he feels it would be the right thing to do. He wants to help people and he isn’t completely hopeless but he still hates magic. He was raised with the hating magic beliefs and it was hard to lose them even when he found out he himself was magic. Really it was Lloyd who got him to move on from his past. Let go of the anger that was rotting him and let him feel light again. Because he was fated with Lloyd, he felt more responsibility to protect him, and not let another situation like that ever happen again. He learned young to ignore the pains from an Ananthema attack, so being on the team actually fighting them? It was hard for him to adjust too. Cole is an easy guy, he didn’t like holding grudges, he didn’t like feeling so hateful all the time and he appreciates the others for helping him out if it. Especially Zane, who helped the most in getting him out of his self loathing. While he does end of trusting the others he still has little liking for other magic users, though he hates their government more.

His magical boy design is visually based off boxing and kick boxing. I wanted him to have this more hands on fighting look and style, cause I thought it fit both his personality and element, I wanted him to be similar to Toph from AtLA. I tied his hair back like the movie and colored it grey cause I’m really fond of changing the hair colors of my magical designs, and I thought the grey looked nice. I kept his color pallet to mainly black,b browns greys and gold. Or well, a deep yellow more like. I admit it comes off a bit more metal than earthy cause I always associate green with earth but green is kind of taken by Lloyd. I’ll be honest when I say I mainly used this gold-ish brown cause it was in my kickboxing reference imagine and thought it looked nice in him. I made his eyes green as a reference to him being green when turned into a ghost. His fate bows are around his wrists, and his magic gem is on his back.

Little trivia on him.

He lives alone in an apartment with a cat named Redbean. Named after the fact that when he found her, she had her paw dipped in red paint and he thought it was funny. She was a stray.

He goes to the same public school as the others.

His powers aren’t just earth and controlling rocks. While he can use geokinesis. he can also use instanginility that he uses to phase through things like a ghost. he does this by passing his atoms between the spaces of other particles in the surface he is "going through". He can still control earth, to a much stronger degree than the show. But I thought giving him a power to pay homage to his time as a ghost would be fun!! While every subterranean character does get a significant strength boost when transformed, Cole's is by a larger degree.

He works at a movie theatre, cause all the places he actually wanted to work at didn't allow him. He's still salty about it.

He usually kept to himself at school, always wearing his headphones and not talking to many people. Not gonna lie he was kinda emo (/j) but one day he feels himself drawn to this one library. He doesn't know why, cause he isn't really into reading but he goes in anyways. He meets the others there, He is the last to join the group.

When he does join, he's kind of an asshole honestly. He kinda has a drastic personality difference from the show, except the asshole personality is really more of a front? Like he does have his goofy, tough but sweet personality but it's hidden behind walls because he isn't very trusting. He's got some serious Trauma (which everyone does in this au, Subterranean isn't a fun environment to be in) and he can come off as cold and uncaring, more than Zane sometimes. But he does warm up to the others and becomes the cake loving himbo we all know and love.

NINJAGO SUBTERRANEAN AU (p7)

What now??

I’ve shown all the designs, their role and their world. Now I kind of want to write a fanfic for them! I’m still not sure where to go next but I ADORE this au, and I want to continue it, I think about it all the time, I want to animate for it make comics about it write about it!

I want to explore how the ninjas would interact with canon characters, how their setting affects them on a narrative scale, god I love this au more than the original source material it came from! This concept comes form a group of ocs and the ninjas have passed it,, man.

Honestly if you have any ideas I’m all ears I just love this au and I want to do something with it. Especially with Cole and Zane’s character. I’ve thought a lot about them and their role in the story.

Jay is the least thought up about, so I should probably go into more detail about him soon and further develop them- BTW IM NOT TAKING OWNERSHIP OF THE NINJAS (Obviously ) the ONLY thing I own is the AU, Subterranean.

Jay had an odd relationship with his magic, he doesn’t hate it like cole but he isn’t carefree about it like Kai. Before being fated, he almost never used it. He was a late bloomer, most people find out their magic at ages 10 (like Lloyd) where Jays magic manifested at age 12. He’s had his magic for the least amount of time, Lloyd being the most inexperienced due to him having the youngest magic. Jay can’t fully control his transformation or magic as well as Cole, Kai and Zane can. He wants to help people, but is too scared of death and so he often doesn’t do much until he’s paired up with the others. Once he’s fated with the others, he starts to come out of his shell. He feels more at peace, and while he’s upset that Lloyd is magic, he feels a new purpose in life. He becomes more broad in his attempts to help, taking after Zane because he is one of his biggest inspirations in his self acceptance and journey of heroics. He wants to help people, he wants to take down their shitty ass government.

His magical boy design is based off a show host, or a “rock star”. I also used his prime empire design as inspiration. I’ll probably redesign or at least tweak it soon ‘cause it’s the weakest design out of the four. I like the bottom half but I think the top half still needs work. I gave him a long tailed jacket to feel like a showman’s, and high waisted pants. His fate bows are around his ankles, and his gem is on his collar. (I know I drew it on his chest a couple of times, but it is on his collar lmao). I wanted his hair in his transformation to be more like his hair in the movie, big and curly. While his civilian form looks more like his actual design from seasons 1-7.

Little trivia

He still lives in a Junk yard, but it’s just in the city. It’s more of a scrap yard for old cars and stuff though

His powers are more to do with technology now than just electronics, but he can still control electrical currents. I know his signature weapon are nunchucks but I think the visual of his weapon being a stage microphone might look cool and play into his show host theming, I still needs work on the visuals and logistics if that though.

He is currently unemployed and still living with his parents, poor boy

He met Nya when he and his dad visited their parents welding shop. Nya being in charge at the moment cause Kai was at work.

NINJAGO SUBTERRANEAN AU (p8)

Canon Subterranean characters.

In the au, The ninjas do interact with OCS in the au, as they drive the plot forward and keep stakes high. A recurring character that will show up frequently in the au is an OC named Huxley, a jester themed magical boy.

The reason he is an important character to the AU is because of the way he uses magic, and the way that compliments and contradicts the way the ninjas do. Him and Zane are close as they're two of the only vigilantes in their city, and Cole hates him because he uses his magic to get away with petty crimes.

Huxley's morality and flexibility is a big theme in the actual subterranean story but I think it really fits the AU as well, he matches what Kai looks up to in a magix while he kinda intimidates Jay and Lloyd.

He and Zane where partners sometimes before the events of the AU, sometimes fighting Ananthemas together. They don't know each other's identities but are fairly close anyways. He isn't a member of the group and while he plays a role and shows up every once in a while he isn't a main recurring character outside of my sketchbook.

I'm sure the Ninjas will interact with other subterranean characters later but Huxley is the only one that's recurring (that I know of so far)

Uh yeah he's the closes to Zane but he does meet the others, planning a prequel comic with him and Zane right now so stay tuned lmao

Just a short prequel comic to explain a bit about the magic system and Subterranean au Zanes back story just a bit.

HELLO NINJAGO TUMBLR! I come with au! The AU is called Subterranean AU!! I’ll show their designs soon but first I wanted to give an explication on the AU and actually talk about it before showing any of their designs. So— yeah!! This is an original idea based off an original story, therefore I’d appreciate if people wouldn’t make copies or heavily reference my au, especially without credit!!

What is subterranean au??

Well the easiest explanation is it’s a magical boy au where all the ninja are magical boys- the complex explication?? Well…

A little information in Subterranean as a whole. Subterranean is an original magical girl story I am developing where part of the population is born with magic, the magic stays dormant up until puberty where it finally begins to show. Magic is not hereditary, it’s completely random on who does and doesn’t get magic, anyone can have it. The thing is, the use of magic is completely outlawed and illegal. If someone is found out to be magic, they could get arrested or more likely killed by their government.

In the Story, the government is heavily tyrannical and like to threaten and do unspeakable things to magic people. At first, it was out of fear of the magic people. Scared that magic people might be dangerous, but it became a reason for massacre, a reason to kill innocent kids who find out their magic, a reason to use fear to gain total control.

The plot of subterranean follows a group of my ocs, magical girls, underground in secret tunnels underneath their city, where people who decide to use their magic go for shelter and to use magic freely. The main characters decide they want to start a rebellion to overthrow their tyrannical government and take down the horrific monsters called Ananthemas that plague their world.

I’ve been using different fandoms I’ve been in to help me explore different themes I want to have in the show, basically using my hyperfixations as an outlet to further the plot since sometimes it’s hard for me to work on personal story’s when I’m so hyperfixated on a fandom or group of characters. So far I’ve used two other fandoms to help, and now since I’ve gotten so into Ninjago I’m using them to further work on a HUGE plot point for the story.

How do the Ninjas fit in?

In the AU, all the characters are put into the city Subterranean is set in. All the characters go to their Highschool (except for Lloyd) and experience things similar to the main characters of subterranean. All of them except for Nya are magic, all the ninjas are drawn to this little 10 year old kid, they become friends with him and soon come to the horrifying realization that Lloyd is magic as well. What’s even worse, is that all the ninjas, are tied to Lloyd by fate. Think of it as platonic soulmates, their magic was destined to work together, they where destined to be with each other even before meeting. The issue is none if the ninjas want to be tied to Lloyd, they never wanted Lloyd to be magic in the first place.

Lloyd is only 10, his father went missing years ago and his mother went to find him, leaving Lloyd alone. He became a bit of a street rat, seeing himself as a lowly brat. He searched for his father every day, until he started feeling drawn to this one library. There’s where he meets the librarians assistant, Kai. He doesn’t know why he feels so attracted to this stranger, but he ends up coming to the library every day. Feeling pulled towards Kai. At first thinking it was the safe aura he gave, he soon found out it was much more. Lloyd was used to anti-magic propaganda, Lloyd had no real opinion on magic. As he started hanging out with Kai, three others ended up joining their little group. Each being very different, Lloyd had never really had friends, so it was nice being surrounded by them. It wasn’t until he found out he was magic, he will never forget their horrified expressions… it got even worse when their magic (which,, he didn’t even know they were magic!!) reacted to his, feeling stronger and glowing brighter, it was then they realized they had been fated to each other. Their fate ribbons joint together in a bow at Lloyd’s fingertips. Of course, at first none of them liked it. Even Zane, who Lloyd found out was the infamous Falcon, none of them wanted this. Mainly because they loved Lloyd, and him being magic meant he was in danger. It was that fact that pushed them into changing that. Even though Lloyds magic was still to underdeveloped for him to transform and use it properly, and he is terrified of the future, he loves the family it gave him along the way.

Basically the whole au is just really self indulgent, and working on the fate aspects of the show. Like yeah it’s definitely a bit half baked right now cause I’m still working on the AU specific plot, yeah 😅 hope you guys like it cause I’ve had it for less than a day but if anything where to happen to it I’d kill everyone and then myself.
