This is really thought provoking. My only quibbles with it involve Sara. Sara has been a bullied outcast most of her life so far, and suddenly she’s been adopted by the popular girls. She’s popular, but it’s transitory. By 2.06 the other popular girls have closed ranks around Felice.

Something I don't think we talk about enough is the fact that Young Royals follows the popular kids. They are the Hillerska youth. They are Forest Ridge and Manor House. The houses that were home to royalty. So that, by itself, makes them the most popular kids at Hillerska.

But then deeper into that, we follow the most popular kids in Forest Ridge and Manor House. The most well-known and the richest.

This post got away from me and it's long as fuck so:

Starting with Forest Ridge, we obviously have Wilhelm. Crown Prince. He is obviously popular. But then we also have August, who was popular before Wilhelm got there. His title is enough to make him popular, but he was also their "fearless leader." He was Prefect and Captain of the rowing team by the time we meet him, and we know he's been on the team since his first year. Then there's Vincent and Nils, who are rich as fuck, but also August's friends and right hand. Vincent is nobility and has enough popularity (with Nils' help) to win over Forest Ridge so he can be prefect and team captain. Then There's Henry and Walter, who have quickly become friends with Wilhelm. Henry, again, is nobility, and Walter is rich as fuck. They might not be best friends with Wilhelm, but they are certainly the only boys he regularly talks to. It is popularity by proxy. And it's the same with Alexander, but then Alexander also has the added edge of being "friends" with August and those boys. Sure, they're just using him, but the fact of the matter is that others will see him as "in that crowd." And Wilhelm, whether he does it out of a guilty conscious or not, seeks Alexander out. That gives him popularity. "Street cred" if you will.

And he's not part of Forest Ridge, technically, but even Simon is somewhat well known, even if he's not popular. In season one, he's well known because he's the non-res. He's well known enough that August knows of him and chooses him to ask for booze when we know there are other non-residents that could have been asked. And then, just like with Alexander in season two, Wilhelm seeks him out. That gives him "street cred" even if people hate him for it. And then by season two, everyone knows. And that, once again, makes him well known, even if not explicitly popular.

And then we have Manor House. Which we know less about, but we still know enough. Starting with Felice, we know how popular she is. She's modern nobility and she has a significant social media following. Then, on top of all of that, in season one August goes after her. He wants to date her, sleep with her. And she goes for it. So she added onto her popularity by being with someone who had equal - if not more - popularity. Then, in season two, she's Wilhelm's right hand. Even before they were caught making out, everyone knew Wilhelm and Felice were getting close. Then we have Maddie, who is originally Felice's roommate. Being friends and roommates with Felice is already enough to make her popular by proxy, but then she hooks up with Nils (or at least we think she did?). So she has popular friends and she hooks up with influential and popular people. Not to mention that she only speaks English so that makes her kind of interesting. Then there's Stella and Fredrika. They're the gossips. They're friends with Felice and Maddie and are essentially the Henry and Walter of the girls. They are well known and rich as fuck and they are friends with people seemingly more popular than them. Sara joins Manor House in season two, and becomes Felice's roommate. Now she has that edge that Maddie had for popularity in season one. She's friends with Felice and roommates with Felice. It makes her popular by proxy. And on top of that, her brother is fucking the crown prince. And she is with August, like Felice was in season one. Of course she's well known through all of that. Of course she's popular.

We follow the Hillerska teens. These kids are already at the top. Even within the walls of their school, they are at the top. They don't need to fight their way up, they need to fight to keep their place.

I don't know, I feel like we don't mention that enough.

My only very minor tiny nitpick with @writingfarintothedark ‘s take is that Felice’s curly hair in Season 2 is not her natural hair (which would probably be MUCH curlier than that). It’s a weave, and we see the hairdresser putting in the detached pieces of curly hair at the start of episode 2.01. But for everything else, absolutely.

Ok, technically I saw this issue mentioned on twitter but I’ve seen it before on tumblr too, so I needed to make a tumblr post about it. Like, hate to break it to you for the (hopefully) few people people that truly think this, but I don’t know a country in the world where racism doesn’t exist- racism is not just an “American” issue, it very much exists in Europe as well INCLUDING Sweden, and in the world of Young Royals(AND to be clear, race issues and class issues are often related, it’s not just one or the other as I’ve seen some people imply).

I really disagree with anyone that erases racial issues from the story in Young Royals(in fairness, many people in the fandom don’t do this). The issues in the show are not all racial, and I certainly don’t think racism is the driving force of the problems in the show, but you CANNOT ignore that race is an aspect. We often praise yr for its realism in many aspects, and racial bias is unfortunately very much a part of the real world. Yes, the story could have still been executed even if race was taken out of the equation, but the fact of the matter is there ARE nonwhite characters(as there should be, because white it not the default), which adds depth, and you can’t just remove that people will analyze how that impacts the story. Young Royals is not written to be some utopian world where prejudice doesn’t exist- in fact, it’s quite literally the opposite. Hillerska is a traditional place where social divides are shown pretty explicitly and subtly, so it doesn’t make sense to see some people analyze all these other realistic social issues in the show but deny the racism. Yes, we have poc that are a part of the “elite” class like Felice, Nils, and Alexander(and I really appreciate how the show is inclusive with its casting), but that doesn’t mean they are free from microaggressions/race divides. For instance, Felice’s journey with her natural hair; the Society needing to be first sons of noble blood, which will inevitably be white boys(and also these white boys are considered of the highest status because they have the most history,) and not accepting people like Nils; etc, ALL have roots in racism to an extent. (also the Society is so messed up and creepy as a concept but that’s a different post)  

Additionally, Simon being a poc is by no means the only issue with the video scandal, but it’s a bit reductive and naive imo to think that there are no extra struggles, even if indirect/subconcious, that come from the prince being with a latin boy.

I mostly believe that if people completely think that none of the issues in the show have anything to with race, there’s a likely chance they don’t understand what it’s like to be a poc in western country and they’re overlooking how traditional Hillerska is. I’m not saying we should attack people for every small mistake, because I don’t think that’s productive or right, but come on guys, there is a bare minimum, which includes not gaslighting people who bring up the racial aspects and refusing to consider that race is a factor in analysis.

I appreciate that the creators said they wanted to cast in an inclusive way that was reflective of reality, because I truly do think it made a great end product. To be clear, the characters are more than just their race, they are people and fully fleshed out characters, and they are more than just stereotypes. Analyzing race in the show in no ways strips them of their well-roundedness and individuality.

August for the character breakdown game!

August you asked for, and August you shall receive! I was hoping someone would ask me about him, and I’m really glad you did.

How I feel about this character: Good lord. The absolute perfect storm of what this character did to my psyche. I am not going to lie that I spent a lot of first season (and significant parts of second and third) screaming at him. And sometimes he makes me really mad at him even now! At the same time, he’s well-written and well-acted and terribly interesting, and I have wanted him to be able to figure stuff out and fix his life from the moment I learned that his father died by suicide and he’s dealing with traumatic grief. I have wanted to climb through the TV screen and pluck him out of an environment like Hillerska. August is such a fascinating example of the way the system fails even those it’s supposed to protect. I just want to break him out of the system, and write him into new situations. In conclusion, what a tragic blorbo I seem to have acquired. (Totally valid if he isn’t other people’s but I see why he’s mine.)

All the people I ship romantically with this character: First and foremost, Sara. I have a weakness for them as two weirdos who see a similar sort of loneliness and want in one another, who get drawn together even though there are plenty of reasons that that’s a bad idea. There are so many stories that can be written about them still. I think Sara breaking up with August was where their relationship needed to be at the end of season three, but I’m not ruling out futures-with-growth-and-therapy or alternate universes. They have the potential to be just as epic as any other pairing on the show! Outside of Sara… well, in my Nils post I talked about how much I ship August/Nils, and how there’s so much there that is currently untapped by fandom. And then Simon/August and Alexander/August are ideas that intrigue me, even though those are more in the realm of deliberate disaster fics.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: I came out of season 3 really enjoying the terrible preppy boy friendship trio so August and Nils and Vincent’s friendship dynamic fascinates me. As someone who went to an odd little college with a lot of traditions, I could relate to it a lot. The people who’ve been in close quarters with you, who you’ve had fun with, but who you’ve also been jealous of and you’re constantly on one another’s nerves… man. I really felt seen by that kind of complexity! I also have to admit I have a soft spot for August and Wille’s relationship, since Malte and Edvin have a lot of chemistry together, and because it seems like August and Wille’s healing is so interdependent. I could talk about that for ages, really.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I cannot even pick one to share because I’m fairly sure most of my opinions about August are unpopular. Liking August itself, in a way a fan does where you want to write fanfic focused on him or ship him with other characters or envision a more healed future for him—even if you repeatedly write multiple paragraph disclaimers about the harm that he did—kind of feels unpopular. And I wish it was a little less unpopular. And maybe my unpopular opinion is that the unpopularity of this opinion (August is indeed worthy of our fannishness) is not wholly by accident. I have no beef with the portion of fandom that just doesn’t particularly like him and doesn’t care to explore him in fanworks. Sometimes you don’t like the dark-haired Byronic asshole and that’s a valid personal preference! And for some people, engaging with August as a character isn’t something they can do with full emotional safety, and I would never want people to have to engage with him if that’s the case for them. He does do legitimate harm. At the same time, there is also a second current in fandom that is actively hostile to fans engaging with August in a fannish way, that uses language in a way that reduces him to his absolute worst deeds and does bad faith readings of any post that dares to explore him beyond the harm he does. I’ve heard stories of sargust edits on TikTok getting endless hate comments, and talked to writers who’ve wanted to write August-centric fic but figured it wouldn’t be worth not getting many hits. I’ve watched an adorable video where Edvin and Malte get interviewed together, only to see that the comments section was full of fans demanding Omar be in the video and not Malte. And I’m just thinking… why are people tearing stuff like this down? Why get angry about there being the bare minimum of nuanced August content out there? It’s not erasing any of the tens of thousands of Wilmon fics and edits. It’s not giving August more screentime in the show or having him take over as main character because the show is already finished. The way that Sara (and by extension Frida) gets caught in the crossfire is doubly upsetting. The lack of August and sargust and nilgust fanworks may be partially due to lack of interest on the part of some fans, but I can’t ignore that active hostility on the part of other fans has also played a role in who sticks around fandom and what they create. And that makes me terribly terribly sad. Because I look at other fandoms and it looks like they have more room for nuanced approaches. Like Interview with the Vampire fandom is having so much fun with Devil’s Minion and I don’t think we have anything like that.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish August and Simon had more of a chance to interact in season 3 without Wille there. I’ve talked before about how Wille and Simon have fundamentally different issues with August, and that they aren’t actually as united against him as Wille seems to think when he gets all hypermasculine and protective. I don’t actually think Simon and August could have resolved all their issues in one season, and they might not be able to period. But they might benefit from some kind of restorative conversations, even if those end in a place of non-closure. And there’s a lot that’s similar in their experiences that they don’t even know about. The worst thing is, it feels like the show is aware of this, and maybe had some moments in mind, but then cut them. Like why have that scene in 2.3 where August tells Vincent to shut up when Vincent’s being awful to Simon? Why have Simon be the one who names August’s eating disorder? I feel like they were meant to have more, and maybe it got cut because it didn’t involve Wilhelm. And honestly that makes me so sad, too.

This got horrendously long-winded and I apologize. But hopefully my answers were worth reading!

There are a tiny handful of August. I saw one one time that was Ayub and Rosh. One time I saw one I was *positive* was Alexander but no, somehow it was Wille. For that matter where the heck are Nils and Vincent and why don't I have the skills to make any of this myself? 99% of fanart is Wille and Simon and I *loooooooooooove* it. Everyone is so darn talented 😮‍💨 I scroll the fanart blog to look at all the pretty pictures and other kinds of art like how are you people *this* good??? There was this one where it was an oil (acrylic? I can't remember) painting of the scene (the scene) in episode 4 and I'm like???? Foaming at the mouth with rabies it's so good.
