Better late than never
So I only found out today that the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy - which was cancelled by Nickelodeon and Paramount Plus despite having its second season completed long ago, with Netflix buying the right to release the episodes - is being released on July 1.
Today is June 30.
I've seen no trailer, no publicity, when I asked people online when it was coming out people were saying "I don't know."
Considering it was arguably the best of the recent Trek spin-offs/sequels and also features Ella Parnell (currently pretty popular thanks to the Fallout series) as one of the lead voice actors, you'd think there'd be more promo. Unfortunately this has the feel of being a "burn-off" more than a serious revival. This will especially feel like it if they release all the episodes at the one time.
To be fair to Netflix, Paramount has itself yet to announce when the final season of Lower Decks (also cancelled) will be released - it's expected to be later this year - so the timing of Prodigy coming out is fine. Something for the summer that won't be competing against either Discovery (recently ended) or Lower Decks (yet come). I don't expect to see Strange New Worlds Season 3 till the new year.
Nonetheless, I'm critical of the BBC for things like not announcing air dates or releasing trailers until the eleventh hour (see Jenna Coleman's The Jetty which got its first trailer a staggering TWO WEEKS (give or take a day) before it is set to air), but this shows it's not exclusive to the BBC.
And I'm not playing the preemptive "Cancellation Excuse Game." The odds of Prodigy getting a Season 3 are nil unless Season 2 becomes the next Stranger Things and tops the Nielsen charts for streaming, so we should be thankful for any release at all. I'm hoping that since Season 1 got a DVD/Blu-ray release, there's enough interest for one to be released for Season 2 (some Netflix shows do get permanent media issue).

Title: Sengoku Astray Jason
Here's an upgrade from Jason's armored OG "Astray Red Frame" 🔴⚔️, which we'll to get that, very soon. American-Japanese lived Nils Yajima 🇯🇵🇺🇸🧑🏿🦱 (formerly known as Nils Nielsen) created his owned masterpiece of a "Samurai Spirit" decked on inspiration from an actual Japanese armor and all its J-cultural glory. ⛩️🏯👹 He calls it, the "Sengoku Astray" and Jason 🐶⭐ obliged to wear! 😁
IMPORTANT NOTE: The word "Sengoku" (in Romaji "戦国") means "fighting throughout the country".
Sengoku Astray Jason Based on: 侍ノ弐 (trans: "Samurai No. 2") Sengoku Astray Gundam [CLICK ME!]
Armament(s):
Samurai Sword • The Sengoku Astray's primary weapons, called Kiku-ichimonji and Kotetsu, they are stored on top of the shoulders when not in use. By swinging the swords, the Sengoku Astray can launch shock waves, giving it ranged attack capability. This attack is strong enough to split the beam blast fired from the opponent who uses energy-based range weapons. The blades of the Samurai Swords have a particle alteration coating, and can be used to block beam attacks as well as cut through particle-based attacks and barriers. The Samurai Swords can also be used as throwing weapons.
Oni No Tate • A shield in the form of a demon face, it is normally mounted on the Sengoku Astray's back to provide rear protection. It is dismounted when additional frontal protection is required, such as when the suit is faced with heavy frontal attacks. This rarely happens to use the Samurai Swords for both defense and offense. The "eyes" of the shield can function as thrusters.
Radome Yo-Yo • A weapon given to the Sengoku Astray at random during the Original Weapon Battle. The yo-yo's string was used to wrap around an enemy's neck, and then pluck to emit an electric shock that knock the enemy out.
Axe • A normal wielded weapon that can also be used as a throwing weapon.
Hammer • This special hammer has three thrusters located at the back of its head. When the thrusters are activated, they increase the hammer's power and allow it to easily disperse multiple enemies.
Special Equipment(s)/Feature(s):
Sengoku Yoroi • Sengoku Yoroi refers to the new armor parts on the shoulders (which can also be referred to separately as 'Kata Yoroi') and around the knees that Nils created for the Sengoku Astray. They remedy the lack of armor on the original armor Astray Red Frame. The armor placement takes into account battling style and are fitted in areas where the suit is likely to get hit. The side armors of the shoulder-mounted Kata Yoroi also function as hidden arms that can be deployed to wield the Samurai Swords, or be used to perform the 'Particle Fa Jin' attack.
Particle Alteration Coating • A special coating that Nils applied on the Samurai Swords' blades. This coating changes the swords' Plavsky Particle band based on the direction of the blades, allowing them to cut through beams. The coating also allows the sword's Plavsky Particle band to match the Battle Field's control particle band, granting the Sengoku Astray the ability to cut through particle-based barrier. However, this coating can be a double-edged sword the particle band was transformed by the acceleration and this caused the blades to break as they were not adjusted to the new particle band.
Special Attack(s):
Particle Fa Jin • A melee attack derived from Chinese martial arts, it allows the Sengoku Astray to send its own Plavsky Particles into the opponent’s and destroy it from within. However, the Particle Fa Jin can be stopped if the Plavsky Particles cannot flow through. This attack can be performed using the main arms or the hidden arms.

Buckle in buttercups, this is going to be a long one.
There are sometimes differences between audiobooks and reading, but I'm going to eventually get around to arguing they don't really matter, and the discourse around this feels weird if not abelist.
There are situations where there is a difference between the way a written langauge (such as written English or Norwegian or Mandarin) works as a langauge, distinct from the corresponding spoken language. Spelling-based puns, as an example. Artistic typography, like some of Nils Aslak Valkeapää's work, where the words - words for reindeer, in North Sámi (God's own language) - migrate across the page in streams, like the reindeer they describe, as another example. Etc. If a given book has a lot of those sorts of plays on the particularities of the written language, then it can maybe be a different experience to listen to it vs to read it, either visually or tactically (yes, Braille is reading!). But those books are very few and far between. The vast majority of books out there don't do that, and of those that do, they typically have other qualities that are in fact heightened when they are read aloud. Written languages, after all, are subordinate to their spoken languages. Some written langauges, like written English, have taken on a life of it's own, but they're still at the end, imperfect representations of their spoken counterparts. At least that's what my phonology professor Jon Heandarat said.
And here there might be an argument that, perhaps, those poems of Valkeapää where typesetting is such a part of the aesthetic quality of the work, falls more inline with his multimedia work (which he was famous for) rather than with the rest of his poetry collections - here is an article in Norwegian on this part of his work, and a translation into English. The author of this essay, Harald Gaski, brings up an interesting point, which is the problem of translation. While technically, I could crack out Konrad Nielsen's dictionary from the 1950's, with all the old reindeer herding words, and tell you what the words on the page mean (see below), and that would be a translation, Gaski argues that since the typography - the literal letters on the page - is such an integral part of the poem, there would be something very much missing from any attempt at translation. (And perhaps also in a version that was read aloud) The best I could really do, in that view, would be to gloss the poem.
Picture of reindeer migration for luck and reference.
In the context of this discussion, a question that could be raised is does reading any work in translation, count as having actually read it? The issue of translation seems to me to be a far bigger impediment in the overwhelming majority of cases that could be raised, than the simple and usually small shift in medium. Can you say that you have read Henrik Ibsen if you've not read him in the original Norwegian? (I think he's more interesting in Norwegian but that is neither here nor there) Can you say that you have read All Quiet on the Western Front if it wasn't in German? Has anyone who's read something originally written in one language, as a translation into another langauge, actually read that work? Has the world actually read The Little Prince - or the Bible? Or have they only read an imitation of these works? Is reading those translations as good as reading them in their original language?
The answer does not lie with me. I suspect though, that in most cases, a skilful translator can again, heighten certain parts of the work (just as a skilful audiobook narrator can), as the Norwegian Nynorsk translator of Lord of the Rings did, leveraging the internal diversity both of Nynorsk as a written Norwegian language, and that of the dialects of the spoken Norwegian langauge. I'm not saying here that translation doesn't change the work, but rather that it's not automatically inferior, and can in fact, give it new dimensions.
If the "translation" of popular culture from a written medium to a spoken medium introduces any amount of deviation from the intended qualities of the original, that still does not make audiobooks of lesser quality, and the instance that we need to carve out a differentiation between print and spoken word, particularly when we're talking about consuming popular media for enjoyment, seems suspect to me. Perhaps if we were talking about an academic exploration of something like the House of Leaves, or rare instances like Valkeapää's typographical poems (and honestly who is reading that casually), then we'd maybe have a point, but the places where these arguments are happening are not in contexts where it actually matters.
In fact, it strikes me as accidental ableism and perhaps a touch of classism. Who is more likely to use audiobooks? People with vision impairment, ADHD, conditions that cause chronic fatigue, chronically busy people who don't have time to sit in one place with a book, people who have boring jobs that require their eyes and hands to be occupied but not their brains. Reading has always been leisure activity. You can't do it when you're supposed to be doing something else. So trying to say "reading is different than audiobooks" seems to me like an attempt to structure cultural power, that says "you who use audio books as an accessibility tool, have not consumed real culture, unlike like myself, who doesn't need those tools."
So let's all chill a bit about if listing to Colleen Hoover audiobooks counts as reading Collen Hoover, and for that mater, if reading an English translation of one of Henrik Ibsen's counts as reading Ibsen. For our purposes, as cultural creatures, it does.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Settle a debate with me and my partner
I define reading as taking in a story, that means visualizing the story and using imagination just like you would if you had a book in front of you
Also plz reblog to spread this around
#Gods I love Valkeapää#Admittedly I only skimmed the English article so I don't know if it has the section on translation I'm talking about#Frankly audiobooks are generally useful in academic contexts too
