Sotheby's is proud to present The Louis Vuitton and Nike “Air Force 1” by Virgil Abloh, a special global online auction of the highly coveted Nike x Louis Vuitton “Air Force 1" sold to benefit The Virgil Abloh™ “Post-Modern” Scholarship Fund, an organization that aims to foster equity and inclusion within the fashion industry by providing scholarships to academically promising students of Black, African American, or African descent.

The auction marks the first-ever release of the Louis Vuitton and Nike “Air Force 1” by Virgil Abloh created for the Louis Vuitton Spring-Summer 2022 Collection. Prior to his passing on 28 November 2021, the Louis Vuitton Men’s Artistic Director was involved in the early organization of the auction and its surrounding events. The auction will take place in association with his family.

Each pair will be sold with a Louis Vuitton pilot case in orange Taurillon Monogram Leather (exclusive to this auction), which was likewise featured in the collection.

Starting from the launch of the auction, the shoes and the pilot case will be exhibited at Sotheby’s New York. Visitors are welcome to view the exhibit free of charge, and can make an appointment to do so through our reservation page.

The Nike Air Force 1 was designed in 1982 and is one of the most successful shoes ever created. On the album It Takes Two from 1988, DJ E-Z Rock was immortalized wearing a Nike Air Force 1 basketball trainer altered by Dapper Dan with a swoosh adorned in the Louis Vuitton monogram. The cover embodied the hip-hop community’s early practice of hacking together high fashion and sportswear, side-lining diverging brands with equal reverence. A cultural symbol in its own right, today the Nike Air Force 1 serves as an objet d’art emblematic of self-generated subcultural provenance. For Spring-Summer 2022, Virgil Abloh collaborated with Nike on bespoke Air Force 1s, fusing the trainer’s classic codes with the insignia and materials of Louis Vuitton in homage to the hip-hop culture that shaped him.

In total, Virgil Abloh designed 47 pairs of the Nike “Air Force 1” for the Louis Vuitton show in collaboration with Nike. To distinguish them from the original Nike “Air Force 1", the sneakers were made with materials employed in Abloh’s Louis Vuitton men’s collections, and were styled with his signature quotation marks, echoing the written graphics Abloh used to adorn the shoes. The individual style designed for the show were made by Louis Vuitton in its shoe manufacture in Fiesso d’Artico.

The limited Louis Vuitton x Nike Air Force 1 Low will release Jan. 26 at 9 a.m. ET and conclude on Feb. 8. The starting price is $2,000. good luck!

This strategy is particularly prevalent when it comes to retro-inspired trainers, which enjoyed a style renaissance over the course of 2020. Beloved by those in the know for some time, old school kicks have now crossed the threshold from streetwear staple to Gen Z wardrobe must-have, leading to many brands gatekeeping the classic silhouettes and leaving consumers empty-handed.

In the same vein as the North Face’s 1996 Nuptse puffer jacket revival, celebrities such as Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid have been crucial players in solidifying the mass desire for old school sneakers throughout the last year. Sporting colourful iterations of Nike Dunk Lows and Air Jordan 1s with everything from leather trousers to overcoats, the hype around chunky, logo-heavy sneakers seems to have been replaced with a pining for comfortable, effortless cool. But with vintage pairs costing a pretty penny, the latest releases are in serious demand, meaning the reasonably priced footwear has become almost impossible to cop.

Thankfully, a series of apps and sites are offering another way to enter the footwear fold, with a select number of retailers holding ‘sneaker raffles’ for savvy shoppers. These raffles invite customers to enter a ‘prize draw’ via email sign-up; if they win, customers are guaranteed a chance to purchase the shoes. Sound complicated? It might do at first but the process is actually pretty simple, allowing the average shopper a fair shot at securing popular styles through a randomly allocated ticketed draw. Most importantly, it stops affordable styles from being upsold at astronomical prices on resale apps (because who seriously wants to buy £89 Dunks for £300 on Depop?).

Although secondhand shopping platforms offer a solution to the fashion industry’s mounting sustainability issues, they often end up locking normal people out of the shopping experience altogether, becoming a playground for those with large disposable incomes. Raffles aim to eliminate this problem by offering customers a level playing field for purchasing at the market rate. Luxury retail giant Selfridges saw this as a major component in launching The Yellow Draw in 2018, a raffle service operating through Instagram and the Selfridges app.

“The Yellow Draw is our way of giving everyone a fair shot at getting their hands on product,” says Bosse Myhr, Selfridges’ director of menswear and womenswear. “When stores are open we can sometimes see queues beginning the night before a launch and we wanted to create an experience that felt more considered and in the end more enjoyable for our customers.” The online space also means that launches are no longer confined to flagship stores, which is great news for those who live outside the capital. “Due to the limited numbers, often stock is only allocated to our Oxford Street store,” says Bosse, “so we were keen to give those customers living outside of London more opportunity.”
