Metal Album of the Week: Nightwish - Yesterwynde
Tumblr media
Release: 2024
Length: 1h11
Thoughts: Nightwish was one of the first bands I listened to when going into metal, inspired by Evanescence, and I never really stopped. Nightwish is the peak of the symphonic genre for a reason. To be honest I hadn't been actively listening to them for about a year but I gave the album a try on my commute and it blew me away.
The album cover has the retro feel of the earlier albums (absolutely gorgeous), while the sound is definitely modern Nightwish. It's more symphonic than metal but the arrangements are just as powerful as any metal band.
I genuinely think Floor is one of the best voices in metal right now, not just in the subgenre. This is my bias but I don't really listen to instrumental versions, because the voice is just as much an instrument in my eyes and it's just not as complete an experience imo. Easy to say when you have a vocalist like Floor at hand of course, her variability is an immense plus for a modern, interesting sound while still adhering to Nightwish's 'brand' (the string arrangements come to mind.) The songs work solo but I think the entire album should be listened to as one piece at least once in a while, since they're so in sync it gets hard to hear the boundaries sometimes.
Favorite songs: An Ocean of Strange Islands, The Weave, Spider Silk, Lanternlight

My favourite thing about the band of the year category is scrolling through the nomination descriptions, being like oh, these could all win and then scrolling past Nightwish with their list of the 12 other awards and the three honoraries they've gotten this year. All for an album that then didn't get nominated for album of the year.

So, the new Nightwish album is out and...
I have mixed feelings.
At first I was disappointed. No big surprises, no moments that Floored (heh) me—after the first listen I went right back to something else.
However, after listening to it for the fifth time now, it's growing on me. There are many seeds of ideas on it that just weren't realised fully, like the oldschool keyboards in Spider Silk or the 80s influence in The Day Of...
The album definitely lacks variety and the mixing, especially of the singles, is subpar. However, the songs flow well and are, for the most part, distinct enough to stand on their own. I also like the darker atmosphere of the album and the overall "Theme park ride" feel to it.
So, all in all, could be better and I expected better from Nightwish, but it's still a solid album that needs a few listens to shine.
Also, I hear the absence of Marko. Troy is doing a decent job but the shoes he has to fill are just too big. I wanna hear a Floor & Marko version of Sway...

Eurovision Fact #513:
Tumblr media
In 2000, the band Nightwish entered the Finnish pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. The band's song "Sleepwalker" scored remarkably well with the public, but the jury was not a fan of the symphonic metal style, leading to the band earning third place overall.
However, the album that the song was first featured on, Wishmaster, went on to be the first of the band's many number one albums. Interestingly, "Sleepwalker" was only included as a bonus track.
