Literally shivering me timbers as I type. I actually recently added to my personal pirate literature collection. I also already use all of these websites myself! My only qualm is with Wikipedia because quite a few of their sources are incorrectly linked but it's a pretty good overall source for basic info, just don't dive in too deep like me and spend 3 hours looking at the sources behind Black Bart... Also sorry for any misspellings it's quite late and I don't fell like running this through spell check.
Since Nopal so graciously already provided some great websites, I will instead recommend other forms of media to check out.o here are my favorite books/authors/youtubers.
Books:
Under the Black Flag: The Romance and the Reality of Life Among the Pirates by David Cordingly- Best entry-level pirate history book in my opinion, formatted well and sensationalized just a tad to keep your attention. Does a good job of discrediting pirate myths while at the same time educating you on the real history.
The Republic of Pirates: Being the True and Surprising Story of the Caribbean Pirates and the Man Who Brought Them Down by Colin Woodard- The same as the book above but focuses more on specific pirates/pirate hunters.
The Pirate Hunter by Richard Zacks- This book shows the true colors of the notorious pirate hunter Captain Kidd and is riddled with historical details/facts concerning the man and the environment he worked in.
The Sea Rovers Practice by Benerson Little- Details the particular methods behind the madness of seaman and their craft.
The Golden Age of Piracy: The Truth Behind Pirate Myths by Benerson Little- Much like Under The Black Flag, Little uses this book to disprove myths and restate the facts behind these men of the high seas. Though I much prefer this book for its credible information and glossary, it reads almost like a textbook and can be a little hard to get into for the casual reader.
The General History of the Pirates by Captain Charles Johnson- Published in 1724 by an unknown captain, this is the book that started it all. Robbers of the high seas, pillaging, plundering, rebellious ladies and gents fighting for their spot in the world. If you can get over the old-timey language, it's a super cool read. But, that being said, this book is seen by most pirate historians as an exaggeration of true facts to entertain readers and relies a lot on unreliable eyewitness accounts. Still, some do consider it credible, just not in its entirety.
Piracy: The Complete History by Angus Konstam- Overview of the history of piracy from ancient times to the present. Since it covers so much time, Konstam doesn't go very in-depth as I would prefer but for a historical lesson outside of just the golden age, this works quite well.
Authors:
Benerson Little- A former Navy SEAL and historical consultant on the hit STARZ network show Black Sails. Author of a few novels above, which are my personal favorites due to his in-depth bibliographies in the back. He has his own historical fiction novel called Fortunes Whelp that I haven't yet finished but so far is quite good. He also goes on a few podcasts and does interviews detailing his knowledge if you wanna check those out too.
Angus Konstam- With his plethora of military and naval knowledge from his time as a naval officer, Konstom has written hundreds of books, many concerning the history of pirates. I've mentioned one of his works above, but he has many many other books that might pique your interest
E.T. Fox- Fox is a historian with his M.A. in maritime history with numerous published works (also has a piratey earing so I trust every word he says). I didn't mention his work above because I haven't finished it, but he has two books called Pirates in Their Own Words that I've read bits and pieces of, so I would recommend checking them out. He also has a book on Henry Every which I am trying to get my hands on.
Nigel Cawthorne- While I have read 2 of his books (Pirates and A History of Pirates) and find most of the info to be passable, for the life of me I cannot tell if this dude is a serious author or not because he has so many bloody books on so many bloody things that have nothing to do with each other. I mean, at least he cites his sources...?
Youtube channels:
Gold and Gunpowder- Gold and Gunpowder covers European colonial sea roving between 1630 and 1730. The legal ramifications of piracy and the societal attitude towards it were unlike any other period of history. My personal favorite channel when it comes to longer in-depth videos and cited information, check his descriptions for his sources.
The Pirates Port- Another channel that focuses on the golden age of piracy and proving/disproving well-known facts. Shortform videos packed with information, and most of his sources are credible from what I can tell personally. He's also coming out with a book soon that I'm stoked to check out!
There's also this great podcast called The Pirate History Podcast that I've listened to a couple times if you prefer audio content.
Hi, I am @writeblr-of-my-own. I am having troubles with finding informations about piracy and you are probably the person most expert on the topic I know here on tumblr, so I was wondering if there were any books or other resources you would recommend/you used while writing.
Thank you very much in advance! :)
Hi Sam! Thank you for the sweet ask! don't mind me wiping the literal tears out of my eyes thank you for thinking of me! 😭
Here are some of the resources that I've used in the past/use now!
https://www.thepirateking.com/index.htm: A great little one-stop-shop type of website I came across some time ago when I was looking for pirate movies other than POTC! There are some pretty good resources regarding terminology, ship types, weapons, navigational devices, and more! This is still one of my fave little corners on the internet for pirate stuff!
https://goldenageofpiracy.org/ : This one is a little more narrow as compared to the one above, but it's still a good place to start your research journey as it hits on a lot of the ships and people that we typically think of when we think pirates!
https://guides.loc.gov/golden-age-of-piracy/print-resources: I really like the Primary Resources listed on this site. From what I can recall, they are available via electronic copy and free! Most of them aren't like what you'll find as far as Wikipedia article-type information that is easy and quick to digest. Most of them are journals that tell the story of travelers who came and went during the Golden Age of Piracy and who may have brushed with pirates at one point or another. They are very interesting to read and some of my faves to set the mood if I'm feeling a little uninspired!
National Geographic's Special Edition Magazine on Pirates: This one is an Amazon link to buy the hard copy of the magazine itself, but there are some really fantastic articles in here and lots of pictures of historical artifacts! Another great place to start your research and just a cool little item to flip through for inspiration or to have on your bookshelf. I happened across my copy of it at my local Target, but I've since spotted it in a few bookstores and magazine shops!
Wikipedia: This is perhaps my favorite resource of all, not just for the pages themselves but for the footnotes and works cited. Once I finish reading something, I always scroll down to the bottom to see the resources they used as reference material. Those have led me down some fascinating rabbit holes of research!
Of course, my pirates are in a fantasy setting, so I've taken liberties with historical accuracy, but it's still important to know the history itself to see what you can actually take believable liberties with!
I will also tag @thewardenofwinter, who I know is a bit of a pirate historian herself and pretty passionate on the subject!

Look, Kidd just reminds me of Vyvyan from "The Young Ones"
Kidd’s Mom: Well aren’t you going to introduce me to your friends?
Kidd: Oh yeah. Uh, this is a friend of mine called Killer… uh… this is a friend of mine called Hawkins…
Hawkins: Hello.
Kidd: And that’s a complete bastard I know called Apoo.
Apoo: [laughing] He’s just joshing, Mrs. Kidd, we’re actually terrific friends.
Kidd’s Mom: Ooh. He is a bastard, isn’t he?

Top 10 chubby actors in the 1940s
I’ve compiled a list of fat actors from the 1940’s, rated by the number of times and tier (lead or supporting player) their names appeared on the posters promoting their movies and number of credits.
I have excluded some actors which might be considered “Hollywood” fat or they got fat after the 1940s. Some of the actors I excluded are Thomas Mitchell, Orson Welles, Akim Tamiroff, Broderick Crawford, Alan Hale Sr., Cecil Kellaway.
The first list is of actors who got top billing or co-starred in many of their films.
1.       Short excitable chubby comedian Lou Costello. Bud Abbott and Lou Costello became the number one comedy duo in the 1940s, replacing Laurel and Hardy from the 1930s. There were 24 Abbott and Costello feature films in the 1940s.
2.       Raspy-voiced homespun comedian Andy Devine was popular with audiences in the 1930s. And the studio always found roles for him. In the late 30s and early 40s he co-starred with Richard Arlen in action/adventure B-movies. He started his career, big and athletic, often playing college football players. By the late 30s, he put on a lot of weight. After Arlen departed the studio, he was teamed with Leo Carrillo in the same movie genre. By the late 40s he was teamed with Roy Rogers as Roy’s sidekick Cookie Bullfincher.
3.       Charles Coburn was a respected Broadway actor when he started his film career at the age of 60 in the late 30s. He was in demand, gaining 15 starring or co-starring roles of 32 featured roles. He won an Oscar for The More the Merrier in 1943. He was also nominated for Oscars for The Devil and Miss Jones (1941) and The Green Years (1946).
4.       Charles Laughton was a well-respected actor and considered one of the best of his generation. Charles was often the lead actor in his films.  Among his best films in the 40s were Captain Kidd, The Canterville Ghost, The Big Clock and This Land Is Mine.
5.       Nigel Bruce, best known as the often befuddled Dr. Watson in the Sherlock Holmes films of the 40s. Nigel co-starred with Basil Rathbone in 14 Sherlock Holmes mysteries in the 40s after the first two in 1939. He was also featured in Hitchcock’s Rebecca (1940) and Suspicion (1941).
6.       Edward Arnold was a fine actor, often playing imposing figures, businessmen, politicians and corporate villains. He started his career in the teens, in the silents, but quit to do real acting in the theater. He came back to film heavier and accomplished. He had more lead roles in the 30s,  but gave up dieting and gained weight in the 40s and played more character roles.
7.       Jack Oakie often co-starred in light-hearted romcoms of the time. While in the 30s, he could play either the love interest or the smart aleck best friend, in the 40s he was either the smart aleck friend or anther role as he gained weight in the 40s. His most memorable role in the 40s was as Napolini in Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator.
8.       Sydney Greenstreet was an accomplished stage actor when he started his film career at the age of 61 in his most memorable debut as the sinister Kasper Gutman in The Maltese Falcon (1941). Greenstreet’s on-screen rapport with Bogart and Peter Lorre led to more matchups in Casablanca, Passage to Marseilles, Across the Pacific, Conflict, The Verdict, Three Strangers, Background to Danger, The Mask of Dimitrios. Greenstreet was also featured in Christmas in Connecticut and The Woman in White.
9.       Jerry ‘Curly’ Howard was the fat member of The Three Stooges comedy team and co-starred in 55 short films in the 40s with his brother Moe Howard and Larry Fine.  Columbia was the only film producer still making Short Comedy Films thoughout the 40s.
10.   Guy Kibbee. On the strength of six B movies, playing Scattergood Baines does Guy Kibbee make the list. Finishing with 10 starring or co-starring roles and 18 more featured roles in the 40s. He totaled 38 films altogether in the 1940s.

Quote
Few horror films have acquired the cult reputation of Herbert Wise’s TV production of The Woman in Black. Adapted by visionary British sci-fi screenwriter Nigel Kneale from Susan Hill’s 1983 novella, it stars a 31-year-old Adrian Rawlins as Edwardian solicitor Arthur Kidd, sent to settle the estate of an eccentric widow, Mrs Drablow, on the north-east coast of England. There, in a remote house at the end of a shingle causeway, he is tormented by terrifying noises and cries – and appearances from a tall woman dressed in black (Pauline Moran), who comes to exert a malevolent hold over his life. First broadcast on ITV, at 9pm Christmas Eve 1989, it haunted all who watched it, thanks in part to Wise’s tense, economical direction, and one of the greatest jump-scares in the history of horror. “[It created] a genuine physical reaction,” wrote Nancy Banks-Smith in the Guardian, “as if one layer of your skin had shifted over another.”

G1 Climax 30 Night 3 - 9/23/2020; RIP Road Warrior Animal (9/12/1960 - 9/23/2020); Finlay v. Romero in ROH Pure Tournament; Fredericks on Last Night’s Prime Time Live
Tumblr media
G1 Climax 30 resumed today, with A Block matches live from Hokkaido. You can see it now on NJPWWorld.
- 9/23/2020, Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center Hokkai Kitayell
Gabriel Kidd d. Yuya Uemura (Double-Arm Suplex, 7:21)
G1 Climax 30 A Block: Jeff Cobb [FREE] d. Shingo Takagi [Los Ingobernables] (Tour Of The Islands, 11:44)
G1 Climax 30 A Block: Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS] d. Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club] (Money Clip, 12:01)
G1 Climax 30 A Block: Taichi [SZKG] d. Minoru Suzuki [SZKG] (Black Mephisto, 12:11)
G1 Climax 30 A Block: Will Ospreay [CHAOS] d. Tomohiro Ishii [CHAOS] (Stormbreaker, 18:20)
G1 Climax 30 A Block: Jay White [Bullet Club] d. Kota Ibushi (Blade Runner, 20:28)
Switchblade is now 2-0 against Kota Ibushi since Ibushi bested him at the G1 Climax 29 Final last year. Naturally, he declared he will win G1. And he might! Ospreay will not win G1, but is on a streak anyway, because NJPW are high on him and don’t care if he got a woman blackballed from the industry.
Taichi had a very good homecoming to Hokkaido for once, getting the win over his Boss. NJPW are now calling Okada’s Cobra Clutch the “Money Clip.” And still trying to make it a Thing. Shingo is 0-2 so far, but that means he’ll be assured a good late run. Gabriel Kidd gets his first ever singles win in NJPW!
Current A Block standings:
Ospreay: 4pts (2W 0D 0L) Taichi: 4pts (2W 0D 0L) White: 4pts (2W 0D 0L) Cobb: 2pts (1W 0D 1L) Ibushi: 2pts (1W 0D 1L) Okada: 2pts (1W 0D 1L) Suzuki: 2pts (1W 0D 1L) Ishii: 0pts (0W 0D 2L) Takagi: 0pts (0W 0D 2L) Yujiro: 0pts (0W 0D 2L)

(L-R: Road Warrior Hawk [Michael Hegstrand], Road Warrior Animal [Joseph Laurinaitis], Power Warrior [Kensuke Sasaki])
Just as I was getting ready to start writing this post, it was reported that Road Warrior Animal (Joseph Laurinaitis) had passed away at the age of 60. The Road Warriors are, of course, one of the most famous and well-regarded tag teams of all time in the wrestling business, and Japan were a huge part of their stomping grounds, although in terms of number of matches, they were more known in All Japan Pro Wrestling than NJPW. The majority of Animal’s matches in NJPW came in 1996, when the Road Warriors were still with WCW, and some of those were in tandem with Kensuke Sasaki in his Power Warrior persona (long story). Nevertheless, the Road Warriors were huge in Japan, working in AJPW, NJPW, Tenryu’s WAR promotion, and even Riki Choshu’s ill-fated Fighting of World Japan Pro Wrestling company in 2003. (Road Warrior Hawk, Michael Hegstrand, would die later in 2003.) Animal even wrestled a select number of matches in Battlarts in 1998 and 2000.
Animal’s brother John is pretty well-known in the wrestling biz, having not only been an executive, both on-screen and off-, for WWE, but also as Johnny Ace, most notably in AJPW, where at one time he had a very well-regarded tag team with Kenta Kobashi, among others. His son James played college football at Ohio State University, as well as an 8-year NFL career, mostly at the then-St. Louis Rams, before retiring after a season at the New Orleans Saints in 2017.
Regardless, there’s nothing I can write that will adequately say what Animal, and the Road Warriors, meant to pro wrestling. Our thoughts and condolences to his loved ones and close friends.

While left out of G1 Climax selection yet again, David Finlay Jr. is keeping himself busy, competing in Ring of Honor’s Pure Tournament. This is the revival of ROH’s former Pure Championship, which was unified and abandoned with the ROH World Title back in 2008 in a classic (but ultimately costly, for the competitors involved) match between Brian Danielson v. Nigel McGuinness.
Finlay’s opponent for this round was Rocky Romero, who he would defeat. This match is on the current episode of ROH TV, but I’m not even sure which Sinclair Broadcasting sub-network it’s on nowadays (Comet? Charge!? It’s not on YouTube in full). We’ll see how far he gets in this. I can’t imagine he’s happy working ROH again tho.
In other news, the LA Dojo’s Karl Fredericks appeared last night on the United Wrestling Network’s iPPV event Prime Time Live #2, shown on FITE TV for $7.99. This concept is through United Wrestling Network, Billy Corgan’s National Wrestling Alliance and Thunder Studios, being run out of Championship Wrestling from Hollywood, a weekly PPV concept. I hesitate to remind that this is how TNA/Impact started.
Fredericks defeated Slice Boogie in the semi-main event of the show. Danny Limelight, late of NJPW Strong, was also on this show, losing to Kevin Martenson. The main event saw Thunder Rosa retain the NWA Women’s Championship against Priscilla Kelly, which is good as it maintains the storyline Rosa is having in AEW right now.
Tomorrow’s show also comes from Hokkaido, and features the second group of B Block matches, including one that may have some implications down the line depending on how the results go.
- 9/24/2020, Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center Hokkai Kitayell
Yota Tsuji v. Yuya Uemura
G1 Climax 30 B Block: Hirooki Goto [CHAOS] v. SANADA [Los Ingobernables]
G1 Climax 30 B Block: Hiroshi Tanahashi v. Toru Yano [CHAOS]
G1 Climax 30 B Block: Juice Robinson v. KENTA [Bullet Club]
G1 Climax 30 B Block: YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] v. EVIL [Bullet Club]
G1 Climax 30 B Block: Tetsuya Naito [Los Ingobernables] v. Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG]
