MUSE: Leah Kunkel (born Leah Cohen)

The Monkee girl profiles keep on comin’! Leah was born on June 15th, 1948 in Baltimore, MD to Philip and Bess Cohen. She and older sister, folk-pop singer Cass Elliot, were raised back-and-forth between Baltimore and Alexandria, VA. Leah and Cass come from Jewish lineage on both sides of their families. Some magazine issues from the mid-1960s mistakenly label Leah as ‘Lea/Leah Elliot’ even though ‘Cass Elliot’ is just a stage name the singer made up (her real name is Ellen Cohen). When Leah was 16 in 1965, she followed Cass out to California, when the latter’s new group, the Mamas & the Papas were signed for a record deal with Dunhill Records. During this time, Cass gained the reputation for hosting the most popular house parties in Los Angeles, where musicians and even some movie stars were present on weekends. It was at one of these parties where Leah first met multi-instrumentalist Peter Tork during the summer of ‘65, right around the time Leah turned 17 and Peter was 23 (oh). Even though Leah was barely out of school, the two hit off right away and began going steady. Five months later in November, Peter was cast as the bassist on the sitcom “The Monkees” (1966-68), where he was an actor as well as musician on the associated records and tours.

So the story goes that Peter and Leah were together seriously before he was a Monkee, then broke up sometime in mid-1966, then got back together and casually dated while the first season of the show was shot late ’66 to early 1967. During the second half of their relationship, Leah sometimes visited the TV set and photos of her with Peter during the series shoots were published in magazines like Tiger Beat and ‘16.’ In a July ’67 issue of Monkee Spectacular, Ann Moses states that Peter and Leah aren’t an item anymore. It’s never been officially reported why the couple broke up, but if it was by the time the Summer of Love was starting, which was also the same time Peter began traveling on tour with his ‘harem of hippie ladies,’ then umm…that kind of speaks for itself, lmao. What’s funny is there’s a sensationalized tabloid piece from a ’67 issue of Teen World claiming Peter and Leah got into a fight over him spending so much time with his fangirls (code for groupies, lbr). Even though the whole article was written for the sake of gossip, like…this totally sounds like something that might have actually happened? Them being on-again/off-again was probably Peter’s idea so he could be off the hook, lol.

After her time with Peter, Leah tried to follow in Cass’ footsteps and start her own music career. Her first record was a single called ‘Billy’ under the pseudonym ‘Cotton Candy’ in 1969; and a decade later she released two albums, ‘Leah Kunkel’ (1979) and ‘I Run with Trouble’ (1980). She also spent most of the 1970s as a back-up vocalist for artists like Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Art Garfunkel and David Crosby. Only a few months after leaving Peter, Leah began seeing session drummer and record producer Russ Kunkel, whom she quickly married in 1968. Their son Nathaniel was born on October 14th, 1970, and is now an award winning TV sound engineer. When Cass suddenly died in 1974 of a heart attack, the couple became the legal guardians of her daughter Owen. Russ also played drums on Leah’s first album, as well as most of the records where she provided harmony.

The history of Leah’s and Russ’ relationship is even hazier than hers and Peter’s. They were apparently together for the whole ‘70s, but must’ve separated some time in the 1980s, because in 1990 Russ married singer Nicolette Larson. After attempting to form an all-girl band called the Coyote Sisters in the mid-‘80s, Leah eventually switched jobs and became a showbiz lawyer in the late ‘90s. She now resides in both California and Massachusetts, and can occasionally be seen as a commentator in documentaries and specials on Cass. In a 2007 Rolling Stone interview Peter says that he lives near Leah in Massachusetts, and is still good friends with her. Normally I’d question this claim since he literally said this about every ex…but there’s actually backstage footage of them hanging out at one of his Shoe Suede Blues concerts in 2008. So, this one was probably true, heh.

The Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards will take place on Sunday, 18 March at 17:30 at the Baxter Theatre Centre in Cape Town.

Winners are chosen from productions performed at professional theatre venues in and around Cape Town. Theatre practitioners are recognised for acting, directing, staging and technical ability. These nominations reflect the excellent theatre talent seen on stages throughout the Western Cape last year. For the first time, awards will be made in the categories of Best Performance in an Opera (Male), Best Performance in an Opera (Female), Best Performance by an Ensemble, Best Theatre Production for Children and Young People and Best Production. This year awards will not be made in the category Best Puppetry Design.

The awards are considered in 26 different categories, including for Lifetime Achievement and Innovation in Theatre. The latter will be announced at the ceremony next month. The judges for the 2017 productions were Africa Melane, Dr Beverley Brommert, Eugene Yiga, Johan van Lill, Marina Griebenow, Maurice Carpede, Niel Roux, Tracey Saunders and Wayne Muller.

A total of 80 diverse productions from the year under review were eligible for consideration. They are, in alphabetical order:

The student panel adjudicated another 35 student productions, bringing the total number of productions that were considered in 2017 to an astounding 115.

“The increased number of nominees in the category for Best New South African Script is extremely exciting as it means that local theatre-makers are becoming bolder in telling the stories that are at the heart of our collective lived experience. To see life imitating art in this way is truly exhilarating. We thank Fleur du Cap wine brand, the hardworking panel of judges, theatre-makers and all the creatives behind the scenes who made this possible,” says Melanie Burke, chairman of the judging panel.

Each award carries a cash prize of R15 000 and a silver medallion. All voting processes are audited and overseen by Distell Internal Audit and the legal firm Cluver Markotter Inc.
